My favorite neighborhood treat! I'm there with my guy at least twice a month. Here's what I like about it: Smooth vodka martini and killer cosmo -- this woman likes a real cocktail, no sweet-drink-sugar-highs for me Excellent food (soft bread w-tomato puree is delicious dipped in a little oil and parmesan, fresh calamari steak appetizer, mozarello & tomato, Friday fried calamari, and incredible surprises every time I go). Sure, I've had a "just ok" meal there but that's rare; usually the food serves this finicky person just fine Friendly staff -- I've never ever had an unpleasant moment with anyone in there Nice atmosphere -- bright air and windows all over make it a cheery place even on a rainy day. I was on a business trip and I walked by this restaurant. I was surprise by the genuine Italian meal. I enjoyed this pleasant surprise.

Came here last Friday night and sat right down without a reservation! The patio is a great place to people watch over pasta. I had the lemon mojito and a fusilli special. There were 2 couples for dinner. Two ladies had cosmopolitans which tasted really strange in a not good way. Couldn't drink them. Salads were fine. Entrees were average. My cacio e pepe was dripping in oil, however, which I found very unappetizing. Patrons at bar were so loud we did not stay for dessert. Not impressed. read more

My girlfriend and I had lunch here on a sunny Sunday afternoon. It was a pleasant surprise! The menu was poorly designed and difficult to navigate, but everything that come out to the surrounding tables and ours looked delicious, colorful and fresh. We just left. The hostess was wonderful and placed into great seats on the patio. Then, it went downhill. We never had a server ask us for drinks, give us recommendations, ask of we had questions or say "hello, I'll be with you momentarily." Several servers eyed us sitting there patiently with the restaurant at less than half capacity. We even heard a kind lady at the table next to us tell the server "they've been waiting for sometime." His response, "that's not my table." At that moment, I have it 10 more minutes. Then, we got up, went to the hostess stand and politely told her we were leaving and she apologized and asked if we were sure. I said yes and we left. We were looking for a good Italian restaurant and stumbled upon La Tomate. The service was good, and the food was more than decent, but not exactly an enthusiastic recommendation. My boyfriend and I decide to pop in and check this place out on our walk home from house hunting. We get seated immediately and the server pops down a yummy basket of bread with some olive tapenade. Nice. They're busy and the service is a tad slow to get our orders in, but our appetizers come out shortly thereafter and are pretty decent. The entrees arrive looking tasty. I bite into my veal scallopini and its kind of blah, served with what I can only assume is supposed to be risotto, but it tasted more like ground up sawdust. How you can overcook risotto so much that it loses its form, yet its still dry and semi-crunchy is way beyond me. My bf and I immediately swap bites of our meals. I am almost done swallowing a mouthful of his goat cheese stuffed chicken breast with red pepper sauce when I see him cut into his next bite absentmindedly. I notice bloody veins and translucent raw flesh... immediately I yack what I hadn't already swallowed into my napkin and see the same lovely clear shade of raw meat marbled thru the chewed meat. OMG I AM GOING TO DIE OF SALMONELLA POISONING!!!! We call the waiter over who scoffs at us, insisting that it is just the color of the red pepper sauce, we insist right back that he needs to return it to the kitchen. A few minutes later he comes back with a new plate of the same entree that has clearly been zapped in a microwave, with a side of barely cooked risotto that's as crunchy as par boiled rice. At this point I am ready to vom all over my plate. As nicely as possible, I track down the manager of the joint, who was actually quite gracious and apologetic. He cleared our tab and gave us his card, insisting that if we were to want to give the place another try he would take good care of us. Highly unlikely, but a kind gesture anyway. Maybe we just had a freak experience, and I would love to be proven wrong, but chicken sashimi is not my bag. If I get sick, come visit me in the hospital!! read more

I must have passed by this restaurant a dozen times and not noticed it. Walking in I thought the restaurant is well lit probably from it's location in the corner of dupont and the high ceiling white interior. There was a pianist playing relaxing background music. I was seated in the corner near this plant and half way through there was a fly buzzing around me. The waiter was very pushy and he kept trying to recommend additional items. He mentioned it was the Puglia regional cuisine week so I tried the baked sardines he kept pushing. I was surprised by this entree - 6 fillets of sardines wedged between slices of tomatoes and three halved asparagus that's it. The presentation was not appealing and seemed kinda incomplete for an entree i.e no carbs. It was quite bizzarre I should have gone with pasta instead. The fish was fresh and tasty but a bit on the boney side I had to be careful not to swallow some of the bigger pieces. The dish was very light so if you are on a diet it'll be perfect plus it has no carb component! The recommended red wine was ok not impressed. read more

When I first moved to DC, I would go to La Tomate with a friend on some weekends for, what I look back now to be, two reasons: its proximity to the hub-bub of Dupont Circle and a wonderful molten chocolate dessert they have on the menu. I have since learned how to make this particular chocolate dessert and the inflated prices of being ignored by the wait staff really takes the shine off the pristine white table clothes...so I have moved on to greener grass. I think the food is overpriced for what you get. But if you do crave such a dessert in such a hub-bub-y location in DC, then I recommend you go. read more

This used to be a reliable moderately priced place. Totally unreliable tonight. Avoid this place. I arrived and placed a drink order with the host. He spent fifteen minutes talking to the bartender about another guest's drink. At dinner we split the Aranchini. Dry and not enough sauce. My guest's pasta with frutti di mare was fine. My veal was atrocious. Too over cooked and too many peppercorns. I complained and was not charged for my entree. Am at home and sick to my stomach. The food here is amazing! I came across this gem of a restaurant after 2 years of getting my nails done across the street! My best friend and I (the first time) were "thirsty" so we stopped in... thirst turned to hunger... hunger turned to food! Sergio, our server, was awesome! I went back yesterday, and had the privilege of meeting the owner, Natalie! Very passionate and knowledgeable individual... makes sense the restaurant has been open. 30 years! Everything is delicious ... my fave app is the prosciutto and mozzarella ... which after being there for 3 hours I ordered 3 plates of! So Good! We visited this place after reading yelp, trip adviser and google reviews. It is Itlaian, and being vegetarians Italian restaurants are very friendly. But to my surprise this one is not so friendly. We ordered two Appetizers, Two Entrees and three sides. We discovered it pretty soon that their portion size is for a young girl on a diet. For sides they asked for a up-charge for even adding Garlic!! It took too long to get food, we had to constantly ask the server to refill our water. Wine served to my husband was not the greatest, even though my husband asked for the server's recommendations. Right away we knew this is not going to go well. We payed extra for adding Onion, peppers, etc, etc. to our Pasta!!! We cancelled one entree, two sides. Please let Vegetarians know when they ask about your menu and your up-charge on small little stuff. And a bit of mushrooms or artichokes hidden in Ravioli is not vegetarian friendly. I am proud of my girls who love to eat vegetables, can restaurants entertain people once in a blue moon who ask for vegetables in their food? Food tasted very well, I felt I was training a cook from my table. Portion size of the entree was good enough. Best part is their location and their seating. Desserts are tempting. We had planned to order their pastries and cookies after the dinner but due to all the up-charge this , up-charge that we never got around to ordering any of that much to dismay of our girls. The location of this restaurant is one of it's best qualities. The building points South on Connecticut avenue between a few streets meaning that almost every view from any window is great. There is a second floor that is almost loft-like in that you can look over the restaurant entrance and bar. I was extremely hungry sitting down to this meal and was very thankful when a retro basket of bread and a side of marinara appeared on our table. While I would normally definitely prefer the traditional olive oil and parmesan, the marinara went fantastically with their soft, warm bread with a hint of tomato crusted on top. For my meal, I got the bowtie pasta with mushrooms and prosciutto. Given they had a prosciutto bar, I figured the pasta would have pieces of sliced prosciutto, but it came in chunks. Although this was slightly disheartening, it was still delicious. My mother especially enjoyed her lamb entree, and as a lamb lover and connoisseur, this is a very good compliment to the restaurant. She also enjoyed her peach gelato served in a frozen peach. I, on the other hand, had a ricotta cheesecake, which should not be a thing. It was dry and flavorless. I got it because I was hoping they had cannoli, and this was the next best thing. The waiter forgot one of the three dishes we ordered (there were only two other tables seated) and he had absolutely no wine recommendations. In fact, he acted as though it was the first time he'd been troubled for one. He didn't seem to appreciate that the preparation of the meal might contribute to the choice of wine. After he insisted that a WHITE wine would do, he finally "picked" a couple different grapes. I went with my own selection. I will say that the manager was concerned that I didn't eat my meal, but there was no way to improve upon it, but to remove it from the table, so we left it at that. Ate at the bar here last night with a friend I hadn't seen for years and was kinda embarrassed I suggested this place. The bartender was horribly inattentive even though it was not busy at all: I actually had to say "excuse me" every time I wanted something. The highlight of my meal was the little basket of bread and olive spread we got to munch on while waiting for our real food. The Caprese salad, which is usually one of my favorite things to get, was pretty sorry: mozzarella was dry, there was barely any basil on it and there was no dressing. Snow time in Washington DC this saturday evening. Living near Dupont Tomate was the closest restaurant. We were not expecting great food - it was our 2nd time in a year in that restaurant and had a not-so-good souvernir - but just wanted some good food in a nice atmostphere. Total deception: the food was very bad. My wife could not eat her plate: the trout was not fresh and the mashed potatoes got pieces of rot inside!! The service was not good: i asked 3 times for more bread, which never arrived. They did not serve glass of water. I asked ,for a San Pelegrino: the bottle was frozen and we could only drink half of it! Last: the bill ($100 for 2) included a mandatory tip 15% for the service. Very frustrating. We will never come again to that restaurant. Our only hope is not to be sick tonight. First time i wrote a review, hope it will be usefull to you. read more

My husband and I celebrated our anniversary here and it was delightful! The restaurant is quaint and intimate amid a busy corner in DuPont Circle with a nice ambiance. We were there on a quiet weekday night in January and received lots of attention from the staff, but I suspect it is similar on more busy nights, as well. I'm a little unsure why this place has gotten decent, even rave reviews, as I feel it can be summed up in two words: overpriced pasta. My friends and I were pleased to be seated outside on a recent warm spring evening (although watching the rats run between the outdoor patio and the street sewer was a tad disconcerting), and the waiter was friendly enough. What an awful experience. Sat at a table in the bar last night and greeted by a curt, abrasive waiter that acted like nothing more than a diner server. Nothing nice to say, no description of the specials, just wanted our order. Then, never saw him again. No one asked about how our food was. Another man then cleared our plates and asked for a desert and coffee order which we declined because we just wanted to leave. Throughout the experience, every service person reached inbetween us, one of them almost hitting my head, to fill water and clear. Doesn't anyone get serving training anymore? The food was adequate. The dirty martini boring and small for the price. The upper level where the bathrooms are smell like sewer. Avoid this place, the only thing I think it has going for it is location. read more

The management of La Tomate reached out to us with profuse and sincere apologies for our experience there last weekend. They clearly felt awful about what happened and were anxious to make amends. Because of their response I am convinced our experience was an exception and am certainly open to returning and giving them another chance. As I said in my initial review, the food was fine and hopefully our waiter received appropriate feedback about his lack of customer service This restaurant left a bad taste. We were "upsold" and not given good service. There were 6 of us and when we ordered a bottle of wine we were brought 2 bottles. "Because we needed 2 for 6 people. " We said we weren't yet ready for a second bottle . Our server then disappeared and after waiting for quite some time we had to find someone to take our order. We were also given multiple bottles of Pellegrino & when we asked for tap water there was quite a delay before it appeared. The food was fine but I don't recall anyone asking how we were doing or interacting with us in any genuine way. And the final huge problem: we were charged for 5 antipastos instead of the one we had. When we pointed this out we were told there were problems with the "computer system "??? Overall not a good experience and considering the amount we were paying (we did end up ordering 3 bottles of wine) this was a HUGELY disappointing experience. read more

We visited this restaurant hopping to have our previous experience just two years ago which was excellent. This time not so much. When ordering beets salad the norm is for it to be warm. Not at La Tomate and to make it worst the goat cheese was replaced by some white shaved something. My partner ordered the tagliatelle but was served fettuccine the box kind. I know this restaurant is not a trattoria but tagliatelle usually is fresh made. For our next visit to DC this restaurant will be out of our list. read more
