People who love La Val's love it because they've been coming here since they were little kids and they have good memories attached to it. I have that, plus my brother and co. all ended up working here at some point during high school which always equaled free pizza and as anyone knows, free pizza is the best tasting pizza. Another case in point: I was home in Alameda over the summer, drunk with a large group of friends and suddenly we were all starving (drinking does that to you, kids). And where did everyone scream out that they wanted to go? That's right: La Val's. Granted, yes, it was around midnight and the place was closed and we were all too old to have any "connections" who might be inside cleaning up, but still, the fact that we drove all the way out to Bay Farm for pizza should say something. The kitchen mixed up our (complicated) pizza topping order on a busy Friday night, but instead of making us sit there with a hungry four year old, they left us with the incorrect but still delicious pizza while they remade ours. I don't particularly like pizza, but in hopes to hide upstairs in the corner and read magazines unnoticed by the world. Crap! I forgot this place is the mecca of birthday parties. But since pizza had already been decided on I grabbed a corner booth and wished I had remembered my head phones. It took me two tries before I found a clean fork to accompany the free salad bar which held me over for the 20 minutes it took my pizza to arrive hot and steaming at my table. Went there with family a week ago and won't be going back. We had the bbq chicken pizza which was disgusting - soggy crust, too much bbq sauce, too sweet, raw onions, too much bacon... couldn't actually taste any chicken. It was a sweaty mess. The salad bar offered less variety than what you'd find at a typical round table, and the tortellini salad looked a bit dried-out. I took one bite of that and immediately spat it out and spent the rest of the meal wondering if I'd just dosed myself with salmonella - it was definitely bad. Gone-off. Stale. Nasty. I didn't get sick but i did feel weird for the next 24 hours. I took the container out of the salad bar so nobody else would make the same mistake, and brought it back to the kitchen. Owners: it's one thing to rotate your stock, it's a bad thing to "marry" stock where you place old pasta salad atop the new salad and pile it so high the fridge underneath can't keep it cold on a a hot day. My boyfriend doesn't even tend to like pizza and he loves La Val's! Been going here since HS .... good variety of pizza (all the usual suspects) and cool place to watch a game upstairs while you eat.They have some decent micro brews on tap here as well. There is also a salad bar that is surprisingly good I hear ...I don't go near them in joints like this....too many potentially nasty kids running around! When you're done just a short walk away is a nice path that leads along the lagoon where you can check out some of the nice homes on BF Island. read more

I grew up eating La Val's and recently moved back to the Bay Area after 10 years away. When I first had this pizza again I wasn't sure if I was going to like it as much as 15-year-old Cynthia did... but I do. This is a really solid, basic, thinner-crust pizza. No overpowering flavors in the cheese or sauce. The interior of this restaurant looks like you stepped into the late 70s or early 80s and most of the workers are high school students, but if you can get past these things you will really enjoy your pizza. read more

My husband and I stopped for dinner here before temple on Friday and I was pleasantly surprised. We got a BBQ chicken pizza, wings, and two fountain drinks for a little under thirty bucks- which I think is a steal, to be honest. I've ordered a single pizza from Roundtable that cost more. The service was forgettable but I wasn't actually expecting much. It's a pizza place! The extent of their involvement is taking your order and then placing the pie on your table. Boom- service done. The woman whom brought our pizza out grabbed our table letter before all our food had come so my husband just went back, let them know, and returned with the letter. Simple as that. Five minutes later we got wings! The food is incredible: simple, hearty, and with great flavor. I had pizza for breakfast and dinner the following day as well because the pizza was just so good. Out of the countless times I have ordered from here I only remember eating here twice for a postseason soccer celebrations when I was much younger. I have been a loyal supporter of La Val's since middle school when my mom utilized the La Val's coupons on the back of Safeway receipts. I feel like the taste did decline slightly over the years (maybe everything tastes better when you are a kid). but overall it still tastes fresh and homemade. I recommend La Val's to friends who want pizza and who are not from the east bay - my girlfriend whose from San Francisco loves La Val's. Wow get the BLT pizza!! It's amazing!! I work close by and whenever the office craves for something quick and satisfyingly unhealthy, we MUST get the BLT pizza from La Val's. It's thin crusted, with a good amount of bacon bits, lettuce, and tomatoes, drenched in delicious mayo sauce. The BBQ Chicken pizza is also a great option! The great thing about this place is they also let you order a pizza that's half, and even quarter, another flavor! I really like that this place is so accommodating to people with a variety of preferences. Oh and they also offer coupons! The interior can be improved. Food was okay. I haven't found much fondness for any food I've tasted thus far in the Bay Area. Oakland seasons the food but overcooks it. San Francisco tenderizes the food but it lacks seasoning and all the food has something in it that triggers bad reaction to my stomach. I've been here 7 weeks. So I've been here a few times before and always got the bbq chicken pizza. Amazing! But this time I decided to get the lasagna. Biggest mistake ever. I understand some restaurants microwave their lasagna but I figured a place with an oven would use it to reheat the lasagna. Instead I think they boiled it. The lasagna came to me in an oversized box which allowed the sauce, cheese and noodles to separate into individual piles. The only cheese in the dish was the cheese they put on top. Sauce was a watered down mess. The lasagna came with a piece of beyond burnt garlic bread. When I bit into it the bread literally cut my tongue and the roof of my mouth. The pizza was alright, nothing too special. The one thing that turns me off to a restaurant faster than anything is abysmal service. I can tolerate mediocre food, however if you work somewhere and are acting like I'm an inconvenience, you better believe I won't be coming back. This is the first time I've been to La Vals and while I can't comment on the pizza I can apply my two stars to what I did order, a calzone. Well, I ORDERED a calzone, but they brought me a pizza-turnover. Calzones have cheese inside them, usually filled with a mix of Italian cheeses combined with meats and vegi's. What I got was an over cooked hot-pocket with cheep sauce, low grade fillings and a few flakes of cheese on the top. The place was far from welcoming, there was some BS "music" playing that had swear words, racial slurs and misogynist lyrics. It looks dirty inside and the rest room was ridiculous, almost unusable. The staff was unfriendly, it was like I intruded or interrupted them. No one even asked how it was for me or said "Thanks for coming in" when I left. La val's Pizza is a great Pizza shop for Little leaguers and their families. I have been to La Val's probably 50+ times in my time here in Alameda. We like to get the Meat lovers pizzas :) They even deliver to your school if you have a birthday and you pay with a credit card. They have a great variety of toppings and even host parties with their upstairs which has TV's and Projectors. Next Superbowl party or World Series? It can be pricey, but then again it's Alameda, what isn't expensive. read more

Short review. Took my son to a goodbye party here where the parents had pre-ordered pizzas for everyone. I decided to try a bite of one that had sprouts on top....I think there were tomatoes and green peppers and onions too...anyway, one piece turned into about four I believe. The sauce was delicious, and the crust was cooked just right. My tastes usually run to the ultra-thin-crust pesto gourmet style pizzas, but I gotta say that this really hit the spot for me. Went with La Val's for our choice of pizza delivery for dinner. We were slightly disappointed. We ordered a small cheese pizza and a small veggie with gluten-free crust. Not a good idea ordering the gluten-free pizza. It was bland and had a funny taste to it. The pizza arrived in about an hour but they were still warm enough.
