Found a great New Mexican spot! A little bit pricey but food was super fresh and delicious! The service was also top notch! Seems like a family owned place which I definitely appreciate. Home made tortillas, delicious chips and salsa what more could I ask for? It was empty when we got here but a couple more parties came in towards the end of the night. They have little wooden tables and benches good for four or five people inside. They've also got some outside seating too. Shout out to the really really good chips and salsa again! I was initially turned off by the prices but the portions are huge. The tacos were $6.99 each but the diameter was 7 inches which larger than typical tacos. The carne asada and al pastor were marinated well. The tortillas here are super fresh, made on the spot. I ordered the huarache. Again, their tortilla dough is super fresh. It came with two eggs on top. You get free chips and salsa. The chips are not self serve but the salsas are. The restaurant is pretty small and has 3 tables inside and 2 tables outside. Located inside the plaza with Safeway, Baskin Robbins and other restaurants, Laberinto de Humo is very small and narrow; it is not ideal for large groups and large parties. But the staff is very kind and friendly. They are kind, attentive and polite. What I love is that their food is homemade and fresh. A bit of a longer wait time, I was the only one in the restaurant and the wait time was about 20 minutes. As for the price, it's definitely more pricy than I expected but their food is decent. Free bag of chips are included. There are bowls on the side where you can choose your own sauces. Downside is that they don't accept payments via debit or credit card. They accept cash or Zelle. I may go back in the future but I would not go out of my way if I'm not in the area. Worth trying at least once but it's not the best that I've ever had. read more

This is a newly opened taqueria and it's wonderful! The tortillas for the tacos are freshly made. My friend is gluten free and they made gluten free corn tortillas for her order. Otherwise they use a little wheat flour in their corn tortillas. But they had no problem accommodating her. We ordered the shrimp tacos and a chicken taco and they were incredibly flavorful. Don't think of some crockpot cooked flavorless shredded chicken. It was bursting with flavors. And probably the best shrimp tacos I've had. The salsas are also made from scratch and it's self-serve. The tacos are regular size and not those small street tacos. It's a small restaurant with limited seating of about 10 tables but it's charming and quaint and authentic. Glad to see this place finally open. I visited LDH after leg day and I didn't know it, but I was about to take a train ride to Flavor Town! The food is great- they hand make their tortillas, and are unlike the others in the area- I found them to be chewy, pillowy; almost like bao made out of corn. My food came out hot, delicious, and fresh. What really blew me away was the presentation. They had these 3 enormous molcajete full of salsa to go with my plate of tortilla chips. Details: the interior is well made, the bathrooms clean. And I've never seen the staff dressed so nicely and so neatly groomed before... they definitely seem to take things seriously here. I waited nearly a year for Laberinto de Humo to open, so I came in genuinely excited. Unfortunately, the experience didn't live up to the hype. Before placing an order, we had to listen to the hostess explain a price increase just months after opening. The irony is that the prices were already the highest I've ever paid at a Taqueria -- and now they're going even higher. It doesn't help that they only accept cash or Zelle. Paying through Zelle turned into another delay while we waited for the email confirmation to come through. In 2026, that feels unnecessarily clunky. After finally ordering, we waited another 30 minutes for the food. One friend had to take his meal to-go because the full process -- from walking in to getting food -- took nearly an hour, and he had to get back to work. That's not a small inconvenience; that's poor operational flow. I ordered the quesadilla, originally listed at $20 but bumped up to $24. For that price, I expected balance and flavor. Instead, it was essentially a massive pile of meat and cheese. If you want salsa, sour cream, or guacamole, that's another $8. At that point, you're pushing into full-service restaurant pricing -- without the service. The food itself was okay. Not terrible. Not memorable. Just okay. And "okay" doesn't justify premium pricing, long waits, and limited payment options. After waiting so long for this place to open, it's disappointing to see basic business execution still feeling this unpolished. Great concepts are one thing. Running them well is another. read more

First time at this small restaurant tonight even through I've driven past it 20 times and never paid much attention. The fresh tortillas are wonderful, and reminded me of afternoons after school in my aunt's kitchen when I was a child. The staff is very friendly and everything was amazing. The meals were very filling and we only ate half and were happy to have lunch for tomorrow. The flavors are great and the ingredients also tasted very high quality. Had been wanting to try this spot for a minute. The handmade tortillas were the main reason. Ordered a few things. $9 TJ style Shrimp Taco 9/10 rating. $9 Al Pastor Super Taco 10/10 rating. Meat was extremely flavorful and the tacos were really large and loaded with ingredients not cheap but high quality. California burrito asada $24 asada adds $2 to normal cost. Super flavorful and probably enough for two people. Overall three items cost me $42. The only thing that was a little crappy was the wait time. From order time to food in hand was 35 mins exactly. I wasn't doing much and wasn't in a hurry so didn't mind but if you're super hungry or in a rush don't expect a fast paced kitchen. Everything is hand made with care so. I'll be going back to try more things but this place is about quality ingredients and big portions. Omg, the food surpassed my expectations. I felt I was back in East LA enjoying authentic Mexican cuisine. The home made flour tortillas were incredibly soft which complimented the three different tacos which we ordered. Shrimp, carnitas and chicken. Each bite was full of flavor. We also ordered the chicken regular burrito. Everything was delicious from the crispy flour tortilla wrap to the succulent chicken, flavorful rice, beans and pico de gallo. A hidden gem in Newark, conveniently located next to Safeway. Definitely, 5 stars. Bye Bye Carmelita's. I thought Carmelita's was the best Mexican food in the Fremont, Newark areas. I was mistaken. We had asked for black beans on the nachos and they gave only 2 pinto beans, being a $27 nacho you would think it would come stacked! But honestly I felt like they weren't listening Food: I ordered a regular carne asada burrito, and despite adding salsa the meat was just super dry and the ratio of rice to meat was INSANE. The nachos were a little better and they were with chicken, however the bean situation was disappointing and the chips were all soggy. I also asked if they have two go bags of chips with the burrito, which it seemed like a pain to give me, I asked if they were fresh as we went when they first opened, and the guy said yes. They were cold and stale . Furthermore there hours on here are incorrect and they don't honor the signage at the door. I asked if I get a free drink since I brought my mom, and he said that was just for the weekend, although nowhere on the sign does it state a specific date, and they open at 11 on the weekdays not 10. With such a strange name, I had to look up what the translation meant. I saw their sign get put up a while back, and I think it even took them over a year to get up and open. I think I glimpsed it was going to be a taqueria of sorts, in a pretty busy grocery shopping strip. Laberinto De Humo I saw means 'smoke maze', which still somewhat baffles me. Lol Within their first month of opening, it is a very clean, stylish and even modern style of taqueria. They definitely seem to be working things out, so not really sure how it is going to evolve eventually. But this NOT that older generation of taquerias, where loud banda music is blasting, lots of 1st gen immigrants, cheap eats that is not fancy at all and probably served on plastic plates. This place is a much different vibe. I think the family may have ties to a construction biz as there is some pretty hip wood work going on. Maybe some reclaimed wood planks used for paneling/decor and all the furniture seem to be sturdy constructed wooden furniture, that I would even be proud to sport in my backyard. And the music that was blasting, even though Mexican just had a jazzier tinge to it. Chicken Burrito ($14/3*) I chose their regular burrito versus the 'super' version that has cheese, guac and sour cream. I just wanted to focus on the gist of the combo of rice to beans to protein; without smothering it with things gooey and fatty. But I just found this version to be just average. I actually wanted a lengua burrito but was denied, as they told me it is only currently available on weekends. The rice and beans had great texture but is definitely on the bland side. Just seems like a healthy and light version, which I don't associate with taqueria food. Now if the beans and rice are somewhat neutral, it can still be salvaged with flavorful meat. But unfortunately, that wasn't the case either. The chicken pieces are indeed very juicy and in decent sized chunks. It has a redish sauce/marinade and is not really grilled, more wet if anything. I really had to dot each bite with salsa, which they do make some good homemade ones. This filled me up pretty good, but I just wasn't wowed by it. Regular Taco ($5/4*) This is where they definitely elevate. They make their own corn tortillas here. Most regular taquerias don't, which is why most taqueria tacos are super small like 4-5 bites at most, some even being 2-3 biters. Here the fresh tortilla is super supple and soft, almost pita-like. And they top this taco with a generous mound of protein of choice that'll get ya about 7-8 bites. So 2 tacos here is a good enough meal for me, whereas a regular taqueria I would need at least 4-5 tacos. I chose carne asada and theirs is quite chewy as it is cut into strips versus finely diced. It is heavily marinated in garlic which I felt was a bit too much as I just wanted more natural beef flavor. And this regular version of a taco just comes with onions and cilantro, so go ahead and utilize that salsa station. Super Taco ($8/4.5*) This is a wow taco albeit very messy to eat. This thing I think took me over 12 bites to eat and I could probably make a meal of this 1 taco with a drink. This has the same fresh corn tortillas but this time you get 2 of them. 1 is soft and warm and the outer tortilla is lightly fried so it has a crispness to it, so kinda like a crunch wrap of sorts. There's a layer of beans and melted cheese. Another large mound of protein then topped with salsa fresca and a dallop of fresh guac. I chose al pastor for this taco and so far is the best meat I've had here. Their pastor is thick strips of marinated pork, very tender and flavorful in those warm red spices. I only got 1 piece of pineapple, but it was good with the pork. This along with the other ingredients made each bite drip so I had to keep the plate under me and probably had to use 3 napkins eating this thing. This I loved. So still want to try other menu items like a Pambazo which is like a sauced Mexican sandwich or their stuffed baked potato that they stuffed with taco fillings. Things that aren't at regular taquerias, which is a big draw for me. Just hope they can hit their stride soon, so I can actually order things that are drawn up on the menu. read more

Fremont area doesn't have a lot of good choices/options when it comes to food but I'm so happy to find a spot like this. What I can say about this place is the consistency of their ingredients. FRESH! Everything they do is made from scratch. You hardly run into places that do that. This is the first burrito that I ever had where the first bite you take, you see the insides already. As well as the cheese inside that stays melted instead of harden. The price here at first may intimidate you from trying it but their portions are big! And this is coming from someone who has a big appetite. (You're probably thinking that's what everyone says but in reference, if I were to go to in n out, I'd get 2 4x4 2 double doubles and then animal fries and just feel satisfied). Service was super friendly and the staff was like you were walking into a Hispanic family's house--I came from an area where it was Mexican populated so if you know, you know what I'm talking about. The anticipation of this place opening was unreal. It was a long time in the making and worth the wait! It's located in a strip center and has outdoor seating. There is ample parking. Inside tables and benches (are these hand crafted?) line the wall. An open kitchen in the opposite side with counter space to order at the register. Their menu boasts quesadillas, burritos, and plates, including my favorite chile relleno. This visit I only sampled their monstrous tacos, which are served in handmade tortillas. While waiting I taste tested all of their salsas which are up front and served in giant molcajetes. I started with the verde and, while a punch of flavor upfront, it's hot! There is a chunky red and I picked up tomato and smokiness. The thinner red was the least spicy and my favorite. I caught citrus on the back end. I was not shy in helping myself to take salsa to go. More chips, please! Their meats are masterful - each with its own blend of spices and flavor that I can't begin to describe. The pollo was hands down the juiciest I've had in my life. The pastor is blended with spices and pineapple. The carne asada is packed with flavor and is so so tender. They have a cooler of soft drinks, water, Jarritos, and Mexican Coke. The price was decent for the shrimp super taco ($9 each for super tacos), but a bit on the steeper end for the regular meat tacos ($8 each for regular tacos). They were big, maybe the size of about 1.5 - 2 smalls tacos for one, but considering the market price for almost every taco places within the Tri city area or even the whole bay, it's like a couple dollars or so overpriced, nonetheless, I'd still eat here again if I was craving them. Service was good, they were nice, nothing extreme. One of their salsas was really good, wish I had more. They refilled it but it was in a really small sauce plate (like those you see in Asian restaurants where you create your dipping sauce). Chips were, I believe, house made, nice and crunchy.
