This place absolutely blew me away. Tiny little spot in Newark with maybe 5-6 tables, but the food? INSANE. We got the al pastor super burrito and carne asada wet burrito with red sauce and I'm still thinking about them. First of all, the salsa deserves its own review. The house salsa has a serious kick but SO much flavor -- fresh, spicy, addictive. And the green salsa? Almost like a creamy wasabi-style heat. I wanted to bottle both of them up and take them home. Every single thing was seasoned perfectly. The rice, beans, meat... all flavorful on their own instead of just filler. You can genuinely taste the care put into the food here. We really love this place and frequently order off DoorDash. We've also ordered directly from their website. Today I decided to order from their website and then pick up the order upon arriving. The interior was nice and there was only one or two patrons. I got my order but when I got home I noticed there was only one meat container and it didn't look like a lot. We weighed the meat and it was less 1.5 pounds and it was a 2 pound order. We also had wrote a note to ask if we could get a pound of each meat rather then 2 pounds of the same meat. I thought this was a great deal but now I'm a little disappointed and I wonder how many times this has happened before without us noticing. My girlfriend and I had a wonder and amazing experience a few weeks agowhen we went to the store in person. The ladies working in the front and back were very attentive to detail and kind. I'm not sure who was working to the store tonight but it was shocking and highly disappointing when we ordered Togo and there were missing tortillas for my birria, soggy and salty food quality and missing items. It's been years since I've been back and wanted a burrito so I decided to come here again to see if it still live up to what I remembered like before. I ordered two super burritos and noticed the price is different on the register compared to the menu by the register. I also noticed the cashier added an extra $4 (for two super burritos) for cheese, guacamole, sour cream in addition to the cost of the super burritos. It was almost $30 for 2 super burritos with the additions for take out. While waiting, I noticed they had signs posted on the wall of family deals and one sign that says if you get two super burritos you can get a free Mexican soda. I inquired about this sign and the lady told me, "No more." I would suggest removing the sign if the promotion is not running anymore. And please update the menu with updated prices when we order so it's less confusing. I did read people felt like they got overcharged here and can clearly see why if the price is different on the menu from what's being rung up. And to ask customers if they want the extra $2 cheese, guacamole, and sour cream to your burrito as some may not care for it instead of just adding in the order without saying anything. As for the super burritos, I'm glad the taste is still good enough. I appreciate the chips and salsa that came with the order and will be more aware of the increase pricing when I order the next time. read more

If you're a local and you haven't been to La Huasteca, then you were probably like me and have driven past this place countless times. This is a gem in Newark and offers fresh, delicious tacos and burritos with a variety of meat choices at reasonable prices for the portion size. Despite having a small kitchen, the staff are diligent and pump out orders in quick succession. There are plenty of seating available and there's a good view of the kitchen from the cash register. And it would seem that due to the limited capacity in the kitchen, the orders do take a bit longer to prepare. My suggestion is to order ahead online and give yourself some buffer time to wait for your meal to be prepared. You'll probably want some extra time to find parking as well; parking can be easily found on the street around the corner (it's easier than parking on the main road with so many cars zooming by). The staff was kind and let me know about the extended wait when I arrived. Their menu is quite simple and from time to time, they seem to offer special deals and promotions. Most recently, I took advantage of the summer specials they're running: 24 tacos and a soda for about 50 bucks and 4 burritos for less than 40 bucks. They also have happy hour specials that run from 3-5 pm everyday where you can get a meal for a fraction of the normal price. They also have burrito Mondays if you're a burrito fan. Great deals in comparison to other Mexican establishments! In addition to the prepared food, they also sell snacks, tortillas, sweet buns, beers, soda, popsicles, and pantry stables like beans and sauces. Alongside the deals, the food is what will keep you coming back. The burritos are huge, tacos are loaded, and they all taste delicious! Most of the items come with a bit of spice so be prepared if you're not accustomed to spicy food. With their meals, you'll be given some salsa and chips. The salsa gives an extra kick to your meal if you decide to smother it in. With so many meat options, there is bound to be something you enjoy. For me, it is lengua all the way! Lengua tacos and lengua burritos. Hearty and juicy morsels of meat packed with each bite! They also have asada, al pastor, cabeza, chorizo, barbacoa, chicken, shrimp, fish and chile verde. Overall, La Huasteca will fill you up with delicious food on a budget but you may just need to wait a bit for the magic to happen in the kitchen. I was very hungry for breakfast this morning and craving some good Taqueria food. I searched Yelp and this was the closest place with good ratings. The place is very small and cozy with a few tables. Since I've been moved to this area, I've ordered from here at least over 10 times. The first few times have been great. Definitely one of the staple locations for us to get food from. I am not sure what has been going for the last few times but my order is constantly wrong. For the last 3 times I have been here, its either completely wrong meat, no meat or just missing items in general. After each time I gave them the benefit of the doubt. Today was the final straw for me. I called in a pickup order: carne Asada fries and shrimp chiliquilies. I was told 20 minutes and it would be ready. I get there about 20 minutes later and I was told it would be another 8 minutes (this is another constant for this location) so I waited. Finally I recieved my order and headed straight home. Only to discover that instead of getting what I ordered, I got chicken fries and chiliquilies with no meat. I should have checked and made sure the order was right but I shouldn't have to. As a business we're expecting them to get the order right in the first place, especially if the customer is pressed on time, on top of being made to wait for a completely wrong order. In terms of quality for the carne asada fries, or in this case chicken fries, I would rate it the top 5 worst fries I've had; the fries are unevenly cut which made some that are more raw than others, the chicken seemed to be only boiled, unseasoned and watery, which made the fries more soggy. The chilaquiles is not any better, since they've drenched it with crema on the top, and it was missing the added shrimp I ordered. After this, I dont think I would come back. I would suggest to everyone to double check your order in the store and add another 10 mins to the wait times given if you order pickup. read more

WARNING: Website for ordering does not list all ingredient included in a specific item! Ordered from here for the first time tonight through the service on their website (mifonda). We placed a takeout order. On the website you have the option under Special Instructions to leave a note. I did this when I ordered their super quesadilla explicitly stating guacamole and salsa on the side not knowing how spicy the salsa was going to or if their guac was any good. We get our take out order back home and salsa and guac were in the quesadilla along with wilted, soggy lettuce which is NOT listed anywhere on Super Quesadilla as an ingredient in it. I called the restaurant to explain they had made my order incorrectly. I explained to the staff on the phone that I had requested guac and salsa on the side in the special instructions box. She tells me that the only thing they see for my order is no onions (which is a separate box that can be checked.) I explained what I requested and she again tells me they don't see that on their end. I also let her know that no where in the item listing does it mention lettuce in their quesadilla and if I had known that I would have said "No Lettuce" as well (although I don't know how much good it would have done since they have a Special Instructions section that they "can't see.") We continue to go in circles with her saying that she can't see that on their end. I know it was listed there because I can't handle much spice and would not have wanted salsa I had never tried before in my quesadilla. My husband also attempts to speak to her and they too continue to go in circles. I would have been more understanding if they would've have offered an apology for the mistake on their part and offered a refund for just my quesadilla (although one of the tacos we ordered was wrong as well.) But if you offer a section for special instructions and either can't see it or don't pay attention to it, you shouldn't have it there. As the customer, it is not on me to make sure your ordering platform works correctly! What if I had listed a food allergy and you still put that item in? Additionally, several of the items (sour cream, salsa I didn't want) were all kind of globbed into one area of the quesadilla rather than be evenly dispersed so had it been what I ordered, it still would have been subpar due to placement of ingredients. My husband had their burrito and said "I've had better" as well. No desire to go back here even if they can't take accountability as business orders. I'll stick with Ofelia's who do NOT put lettuce in their quesadilla! I can't believe I didn't know about this place sooner because this is now my go-to spot for when I want a burrito without having to drive too far. Prior to this, I would always go to Arteagas, but my issue with that place is that all of the other meats besides Carne Asada were sadly quite disappointing. Just a few minutes down Thornton was this tiny little spot doing some amazing things. Each of their meat options is carefully marinated to bring out the best flavors. Plus, they also offer mixed burritos where you can get Carnitas with Al Pastor. Yeah it's a bangin' combination! The tender and juicy Al Pastor mixed with the crispy Carnitas is just a flavor and texture bomb that is unrivaled. In addition, their spicy green salsa actually packs some heat so make sure to ask for some before they run out. I'm also a fan of how they cook the outside of the tortilla so it has that added crispy texture. I'm giving it a 4 because it's not exactly the most affordable option, however they definitely give you your moneys worth. The pricing is fair considering you can feel its heft as you pick it up and taste all of the great quality in every bite. read more

I went to Newark to dine at a restaurant that was closed on Labor Day. Found this location and decided to give it a try based off of the reviews. Walked in and the place was empty, was hesitant but again decided to try it based off of the reviews on Yelp. I ordered a carnitas wet burrito and my friend ordered the quesadilla with carne asada. Let me first start off by saying both meats were super salted. My carnitas was not fresh you could tell that it was recooked on the grill and was very dry. The burrito was filled mostly with rice. A huge let down. The quesadilla was lacking cheese and over salted carne asada. They put lettuce in it and that was a wilted mess. It was definitely a wrong choice to dine here. Staff not friendly and overall was not a good experience. I would not recommend going here if you are looking for authentic good Mexican food. read more

Small local Newark Taqueria, at night time you can't miss the huge glowing red "TAQUERIA" when driving by. They do catering starting at $14 per person and includes 2 hours of being on-site and cooking the meats and toasting the tortillas fresh, can't beat that. The free tortilla chips are the thinner crispy ones I personally prefer, salsas were fresh, and the garnishing and plating was done very nicely for a to go order. Some of the interesting taco choices they had below: Barbacoa Tacos: Came in crispy hard shells like how birria tacos are supposed to come. Beef was tender and strained properly so the tacos were not soggy messes dripping liquid out with every bite. 90% of the "birria" I try should be called Barbacoa because they use beef and not goat and glad La Huatesteca are calling it by the proper name and not jumping on the bandwagon. Asada and Chorizo Tacos: The combo is very interesting and an ingenious way to battle the dryness you can get with Asada, its very easy to overcook and get too soft so the greasy softness of the chorizo helps. This place has solid chips and salsa. Their red sauce is my favorite of all the Mexican joints I've been too but their spicy green sauce is amazing too. Your stomach will definitely feel the burn. I don't mind paying $1 for the chips when taking out but it would be nice if they were included since the tacos were $5 a piece. I've since found a new place for my taco fix but La Hauesteca is open late so if I'm craving tacos I'll probably go here. I go to Arteagas for my burritos. Today I didn't find the Al Pastor too appetizing and there's something off about the Agua Fresca. There's something else mixed in that makes me hesitate to drink it. It's kind of a thick gelatin consistency, not the regular kind of juice that you would get at Arteagas. The burrito was delicious, not overly greasy but still enough meat and fillings to satisfy my cravings. I'm pretty sure the ownership has changed at some point. I never went until recently but the 'mini mart' part of their name is no longer around. Now it is a bare bones taqueria with about 4 tables and not much else. The back area is visible through the plexiglass partition and there is a lot of room back there. So I can see where a market may have been. I think they are now trying to market more of a catering angle, where you can hire them to make tacos to order for your event. I've been to a few events with a live taco grill, and have always loved them. I wouldn't doubt that they probably rock a decent one. Carne Asada Tacos ($3 per/4*) So at this price, these are much larger than most street/taco truck versions. I'd say almost double the size. Easily 6-8 bites per taco, where the tiny $2 ones are barely 3 bites. So order your tacos accordingly here, don't automatically order 6, cuz you will get stuffed, and your bill will be approaching $20 bucks. 3-4 is a decent meal. The carne asada part was legit. Typical fully cooked, seasoned really well and chopped pretty fine. The tortillas could use a tad of oil on the grill, but that is a total preference. Lots of onion and cilantro round out the taco, along with a dab of their red salsa. Not mind blowing but definitely solid as heck. Barbacoa Tacos ($3.50 per/3.5*) These are super similar to those quesobirrias that are raging right now, just minus the cheese. Here they'll slightly fry the tortillas so there's a slight crispness but not brittle like a taco shell. I like the fry, but it can get greasy if you're eating multiple. The meat is well drained and decent flavor. It is straight up Mexican pot roast, but well shredded. But the meat came off a bit dry to me cuz I think they put in good effort in squeezing out most of the juices. Easier to eat, sure, but less chin dripping juice left me hanging. Carne Asada and Shrimp Plate ($16/4*) Basically Mexican surf n' turf. Carne Asada super well seasoned, almost a tad salty. But I just stuffed these in the super warm corn tortillas to cut the saltiness. Worked great. But the meat is now not chopped up, it is in flat wide strips, so you do have to do some cutting. The shrimps were very nicely cooked and seasoned. Perfect accompaniment to the chewy and savory beef. And the green salsa that was given with chips are crazy good and spicy. Perfect with the protein on this dish. #trust The beans and rice were super proper as well. Super creamy refried beans made for an awesome dip for the tortilla wrapped steak. The rice was a little greasy, but they gave such a small portion that it was eaten quite easily. This will be my anchor meal here. But do note, it may be better to order ahead of time. Everything will be be given in take out format, whether you eat in or out. I once placed an order there and had to wait over 20 minutes for one plate. But I think I got behind several phone in orders. Now I know. Will be returning, solid and divey enough for me. read more

Really disappointed with la Huastecal!! I usually don't go here because the food is only average but after acquiring a coupon on my Safeway receipt, I decided to give it another shot. The coupon stated you can buy a burrito and two drinks and receive a free burrito of equal or less value. Upon arriving for my food it appears that their coupons are false advertisement. They refused to honor what is clearly stated on the coupon. I ordered a super burrito steak and they said the coupon does not apply to super burritos only regular but the coupon does not state that it must be a regular. My first time here. I ordered 3 chicken birria tacos and the chicken were grossly huge. The biggest piece of chicken I've ever seen. Unseasoned and unappetizing. I was shocked. I tried to tell the lady at the register that the chicken pieces were huge. She didn't speak English so she sent some teenage kid with no customer service skills.
