Wow. My husband picked this up to enjoy in our hotel room and everything was really good and still hot.

We had the onion pancakes for appetizer, crispy and very tasty with the sweet and sour sauce. Though, I thought it had a little too much of green onion. For the entrees, we had pan fried noodles with veggies and beef and Peking spareribs. Both were very tasty. One thing that I enjoyed was that the oil used to cook was fresh. Really, I give it 3.5 stars. It's strange when you grow up Chinese in the states. There weren't a lot of types of Chinese food, maybe we had one Szechuan, a couple of Cantonese, and maybe you'd have Hunan or Shanghainese restaurant in your general area. Well, things have certainly changed, especially here on the West Coast. You can get pretty much ANY type of Chinese food you desire. You just have to do some research and ask around (or Yelp). Lai Lai is not one of these regionalized restaurants. I do remember back in the day there was always one kind of Chinese restaurant hearkening back to the days of egg foo young. It always had good, decent food which comprised of the most inoffensive tasting and looking dishes (ie not stinky tofu, not chicken feet, or ox blood soup). The one where the majority of customers is non Asian, but there were a lot of them. Lai Lai is one of these restaurants. The restaurant was about 2/3rds full tonight and I think, besides the wait staff, I was the only Chinese person in there. We had chicken chow mein, string beans, and Mongolian Beef. Everything was surprisingly good. The noodles were tasty and not too greasy; the beef was tender and juicy; and the string beans were not over-cooked. All of our food came out to less than $30: totally reasonable! I probably wouldn't bring my mom here, but I would definitely come back again with my non-Asian hubby. read more

We've been a regular customer for about 25 years. We are never disappointed with the quality of the food and service. It's a great place for "American Chinese" food. The owner Jimmy always greets us with friendly, happy and welcoming attitude. The staff has the same happy welcoming attitude, too. The restaurant is casual and food is consistent. I am a big fan of exceptional service and great food! This is my favorite Chinese restaurant I know of so far and let's say I've been to many. My all time favorite is the Mongolian Beef, I've yet to find any Mongolian Beef as good as theirs. And oddly enough, they also have the best lemons I've ever had haha... As we walk in we were greeted very nicely. We ordered and drank our drinks , 5 minutes later our potstickers come out screaming hot, at first bite no flavor and pork inside tasted old and freezer burnt. At this point I look around and start to wonder why all the tables don't have chop sticks and only have forks and spoons . 1st red flag. Next I scan the restaurant and notice about 24 other people eating dinner , But they were all white and no Asians. 2nd red flag. Then I realize this is a American Chinese restaurant , not a locals spot for Millbrae which has a large population of Asians . Our food comes , veggi. Delight--way to greasy for just steamed veggies . Next was Peking beef- large portion but over loaded with a heavy salty gravy. Average beef flavor. I ate here with my aunt and some of her friends a week ago. The interior was depressing and you feel closed in by the dark fake wood paneling between the tables. I have had MUCH better Chinese food elsewhere. The pineapple chicken had a few crumbs of chicken in it and the "sizzling rice soup" tasted like hot water with some gooey clumps of rice tossed in. I didn't bother finishing it. I could not help but notice that there were NO Chinese eating in there and there were no chopsticks at the tables. I just left this place ! I ordered take out and went to the restroom while I waited on my food. As I walked in I noticed someone In The other stall but thought nothing of it and proceeded to use the other stall. I look up and there is a Hispanic man looking over the stall at me as I peeped! I jumped up and immediately left the stall and asked him why he is looking over and in the women's bathroom !! He says I'm cleaning I'm cleaning ! Which at that point I noticed he was cleaning but why on earth would he peak over the stall like a pervert when he knows he's In the women's restroom. I've been going to Lai Lai for many years. A couple of years ago we ordered our usual stuff to take out. When we got home and I opened what was supposed to be lemon chicken I noticed it was a lot different. It wasn't the sliced chicken breasts with lemon sauce on them it was small chicken nuggets with lemon sauce on them. I didn't really care for it and my husband didn't care for it so we ended up having to throw it away. The next time we dined in the restaurant we asked about the change. The waiter was very apologetic and brought us a dish to try on the house. Unfortunately it was also made with the same small chicken nuggets and we didn't care for it either. I ordered takeout, which included the boneless Peking pork ribs, soft tofu with eggplant, and the corn chicken soup. The pork ribs didn't have the usual sweet flavor,but has sweet and tangy flavor. The pork was a bit over done and tough to chew. The flavor was ok. The tofu and eggplant was good, albeit a bit soupy. The chicken corn soup barely had any identifiable kernels. Also, there wasn't a lot of chicken. For the price, it was too little chicken and corn. The flavor was ok. I went there because it was open at 4:30pm and had 4 stars.
