Lucked out with the Monday meal deal. Texas beef bbq sandwich, 1 side plus drink for $7.49. Bbq sandwich piled high. With slaw made it a little challenging to keep together on the bun, but still tasty. Just add va bbq sauce and the day was made! For the side I went with the hush puppies. Stopped by this little BBQ joint when having a hankering for some NC style BBQ and wanting to try someplace new [to me]. This is a simple little place with minimal seating and counter service. I liked the minimalist menu, this made deciding what to order a breeze. They have combo meals and "huge platters" as well as a small kids menu. Two ample sized NC style bbq sandwiches, 2 drinks, and 4 sides was just $18.34 including tax. The bbq was extremely good, it was not greasy at all, was a nice portion, the cole slaw was on point, but the bbq lacked a smokey flavor, still very good. The hush puppies were awesome, mac and cheese was creamy and good, the collard greens tasted like they were from a can but still good, and unfortunately the potato salad was not good at all. I liked the neighborhood feel of this place, lots of regulars coming and going, I also liked the use of the small space, and complementary peanuts to snack on while waiting. I look forward to returning here and trying a few other items on the menu. For a quick and simple meal, you can't go wrong here. read more

After having some fun at Richmond's Comic Con, we were headed home through Lakeside but needed a bite to eat. I had forgotten about this gem until my hubby asked about the BBQ place in the area. I literally did a U-turn (because I missed the 1st turn) so we could enjoy their tasty meat! I am a huge critic of BBQ since my family usually makes our own and I'm very partial to our method. Virginia BBQ has the best NC style BBQ next to our homemade. It was even great as lunch leftovers on Monday! read more

I placed an online order for a party. After I put in my payment info. with paypal, I realized they didn't ask me time or day for order. I called the Lakeside restaurant and they said they didn't do online orders and to call the main office. I called the main office and they also said they didn't do online orders and said my payment would be rejected. I emailed the gentleman whos name was on paypal as the one being given payment. He also states that payment would not go through. I tried to cancel payment on paypal and it was already sent to my bank account. The next day the payment had been sent to the gentleman and when I emailed him to let him know and if I could get a refund, I got no response. I have filed a grievance with paypal and called the main office. It turns out that gentleman no longer works for Virginia barbeque. read more

I always forget this place is here... but I love it. As the name implies, they do BBQ- North Carolina and Virginia styles... plus some great sides. I ordered dinner to take out tonight (a pint and a half of VA style pulled pork, a pint of coleslaw, a side of hush puppies, a side of green beans, and 6 corn muffins) for $25. And we didn't even open the extra half pint of pulled pork- but it'll make great leftovers! The service was fast and efficient, and the pork was tasty- I would have liked it a tiny bit less chopped but overall it was delightful. And their hush puppies are great- they have an extra little salty component to them I usually don't taste in other hush puppies. The inside of this place isn't much to look at, but it's definitely a great place to get take-out when you have company or just want to bring home dinner. read more

Virginia BBQ is a great place to go with people who have differing opinions on barbecue because they carry every type imaginable: Virginia, NC, and Texas styles. And all the sides are awesome! Most notable to me are the green beans, mac and cheese, and fried apples. There are a few different sauces to choose from, but I always come back to the original. If you purchase a combo, you will get a punch card and receive a "punch" for each combo meal you buy. I believe on the sixth punch you receive a free combo. Tuesdays are "double punch" days - two punches per combo! The only slight downside is that there are very few tables, so you couldn't really guarantee seating if you decide to eat in. Fortunately, I live one street over so this is not an issue for me. read more

This place was great, but we were a little shocked at how teeny it was! We were on a long drive down 95 and found his place on yelp. Thankfully we walked in when no one was there; there are two tables and a counter inside, and a bunch of picnic tables outside. We got sampler platters and had cornbread, baked beans, slaw, and potato salad. Everything was super! The potato salad was heavy on mayo, but it was all still delish. I'm glad we got here when we did though, because it was one girl behind the counter, so it took a couple five minutes to get our food. The girl told us that the place is a 100 year old house! Probably the best BBQ in Richmond, certainly the best I've tasted so far. Ordered the sampler platter with slaw and beans for sides. It had Virginia, Texas and NC style BBQ and I preferred the VA or TX styles to the NC as it had a little too much vinegar for my taste. The sides were very good also. Will definitely be back for more. Great place to stop after visiting the Botanical Gardens. read more

Had lunch at Virginia Barbeque today with a coworker and we were both pretty pleased with the food. We both had the Original Virginia BBQ Sandwich combo. I chose baked beans and corn muffins while my coworker had corn muffins and potato salad. Baked beans were great, corn muffins were good without being terribly memorable, and my coworker didn't care for the potato salad which didn't seem to be anything more than potato pieces in mayonnaise. But the star is the barbeque which was excellent. I think there was too much bun but the tasty meat more than made up for it. VA BBQ is nice for a quick, cheap meal. I personally think their pork is much better than some of the other hot joints around town. It's moist, flavorful and smoky. They have several different sauces so if sweet is your thang, they got it, or if you like the vinegar-based sauce (like me), they have that, too! Their hush puppies are clearly homemade, not dropped from a bag (YUM!). I have tried several of their sides and I would say, hit or miss. Fries, hush puppies, and baked beans are super tasty. The beans have a nice kick to them, and I like that. I ordered the "country green beans" on my last visit which was canned green beans with pepper. Not so great. I ate them all, but honestly. If you are going to use canned green beans, you better jazz them up with some bacon or onion or BUTTER. Overall a good, filling meal (read: big portion) for a good price (under 8 bucks). I'm in! They are also pretty fast. I never dine in, but my order is always ready within less than five minutes. I like speedy. read more

I'm not huge bbq fanatic, but I might be one after a few visits to this place! Great food. I ordered the virginia bbq sandwich along w/ corn muffins and the baked beans. I would order all again, but not before I have a go at the rest of the menu. We ate in, but dining area is small--maybe 4 tables and a couple of picnic tables outside. We ordered take-out last night and it was amazing! This was our first time here so we ordered the Novice Platter. It comes with Carolina, Virginia, and Texas BBQ. We also got the Bomb Fries, Slaw, and Collard Greens. The woman at the counter was nice and gave us extra of all three sauces. Everything came out to less than 15 dollars and was enough for 2-3 people. The BBQ was fantastic. The slaw was good and very fresh. The fries were pretty good but the greens needed more seasoning. First time trying this place, which is hidden next to a couple of stores. Prices aren't bad and seem to he on the same level as other small bbq places I've been to. I tried the platter that had 2 sides and 3 different types of bbq. The Texas bbq felt a bit dry but putting some sauce on it helped it. The other two (Virginia and N.C.) were good as i expected it to be. The size portion was bigger than what i thought so that was welcomed. The sides i had were Mac and cheese & collard greens. The greens tasted fine but could have had a little more kick to them but the texture was how i liked it. Wasn't that thrilled about the Mac and cheese but it was ok, but you can tell it was fresh made instead of pre cooked so I can make do with that. Overall i will come back here to try the other things on their menu. read more

My personal favorite is the Carolina style (vinegar base with a hot pepper kick). Great flavor. The hushpuppies are fried to order so they are always hot and fresh. Stopped by for late lunch while visiting Richmond, Va. a little hole in the wall with good BBQ but not the best. The chopped pork contained considerable fat and gristle. The NC flavored sauce was weak and watery. NC style BBQ usually much more fluid than the other styles but I prefer the vinegar style as opposed to sweet thicker forms. But their sauce had little taste other than vinegar. My preference is Scott's out of NC. But the serving size is gastronomes (LOL). Really stuffed buns for great substance. I always order extra slaw cuz nobody ever gives you enough. O would have no problem returning again for more Q, but again, not my favorite -but good read more

Pretty mediocre bbq mixed with bad attitudes = 1 star. Bbq both chicken and pork were very dry. Virginia bbq sauce was bitter which was dtrange, tsste more like vinegar than tomato based. Sides (greens and green beans) had 0 flavor other than salt. Mac and cheese taste like it came from a cam and they just dumped a bunch of pepper in it. And by the way we got yelled at because we filled up our own bbq containers to go even though there was no sign and they were in front of the counter. Would skip at all costs read more

The food here was pretty good. I ordered the VA style BBQ sandwich combo. I was flavored well and I like the buns that they use. They are thick and will fill you up. My sandwich was STUFFED so I was pretty excited about that. Wasn't a fan of the slaw but then again I don't really like cole slaw. I want to try the Carolina Style BBQ to see if its closer to the flavor I'm used to. But I WILL be returning here. read more
