First time I take it in they did a full service and replaced the thermostat that was busted and charged me 1700 which felt outrageous but whatever I was happy it was fixed. Not even 48 hrs go by and the same error message comes back on my mini. Now there's a new cod3 per Henry and instead of calling and discussing it with me he calls me to tell me my cars ready and wanted another $700 out of me for labor only and it was there for less than 24 hrs when I brought it back. How is that good business? You held my car hostage and performed work without my authorization and now for the 3rd f-ing time that error message is back. Terrible customer service and you had the nerve to say you're fair yet you complained non stop about visa taking 4% from the charge. Glad you lost that money! Henry has worked on my families 2012 Audi A4 a few times. The last time we took it in he charged $2500. The same error message appeared and the coolant was dripping everywhere. Henry said that he would "make it right". When I went to pick up the car, Henry claimed that we owed another $640. When confronted about the initial lower quote and why it went up $200, Henry screamed at me and my dad on the phone. To my face, he said "your dad is giving Jews a bad rep." He screamed at the top of his lungs and slammed his fists on his desk multiple times. RIP OFF ALERT. Henry charged me $206.00 twice ($198.00 plus tax) for synthetic oil changes for my VW Jetta that the VW dealers charge, including tax, $106. Henry's excuse was that he used a special oil, (the same as VW dealers at twice the price). Anywhere in Chicago synthetic oil changes cost $125.00 maximum Henry made an unauthorized and unnecessary exhaust system repair at a cost of $338.00, using the excuse that winter snow would create a problem and exhaust might "fall off". Henry pads his bills with "clean up charges." In years of having automobile repairs done at many auto services has any charged me a "clean-up" fee. His hourly rate of $160.00 for labor is $65.00 more than I am currently paying for better automobile service. It is my considered opinion that Henry is a RIP OFF, underhanded and far from being a nice person. His behavior could be consider less than professional when calling customers profane names for questioning his unethical behavior. I DO NOT RECOMMEND LAKESIDE INTERNATIONAL AND CUSTOMERS COULD SAVE QUITE A LOT OF MONEY USING ANOTHER AUTO SERVICE. read more

This is going to be one of those, "If I could give this place zero stars, I would." kind of a place. Henry is a con-man, he will gladly rip you off and pretend he's the nicest man on earth providing you nothing but full honesty and best service imaginably possible; however that just couldn't possibly be further from the truth. They started working on my car without giving me a quote, and the end result didn't change a thing in the car. I had the same exact problems with the car at the end of the day, after having paid an invoice that made my car enthusiast friends drop their jaws and feel sorry for me for getting ripped off. I took the car back, and Henry continued his act. I gave him another chance, I was a fool. They literally invented the saying, "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me." Shame on me. This place burned me and ripped me off of thousands of dollars, with almost no results. To give you an example, one of the smallest problems was that I needed a new mirror for my car. They promised me that it'd be painted, despite an extra fee. I agreed. They just put a non-painted mirror cover and charged me an extreme amount of money for it. I asked other people who own similar cars and they felt sorry how badly I got ripped off by this con artist. The worst? The mirror popped off a week later. It's not like they charge you a lot and provide quality service. They're both unreasonably expensive, and also provide horrible, cheap, unreliable service. The mirror was the smallest of the problems. All the problems I took my car to get fixed remain to this day, despite having already paid a lot more than a couple thousands dollars. Every single time I walked into his extremely outdated office, he would come up with another story of what the problem is, totally irrelevant to the situation or what I'm asking for, or what he was talking about the previous time. His suggestions would conflict the previous suggestions he would give to me. The other problems for which I had taken the car here, like oil burn, A/C noise, etc. he literally simply ignored all of them and found other things to play with and charged me for it. Worst is that he did so without giving me a quote in advance. It also takes a LONG time to receive your car back from these guys. They work on a snail's pace. They don't keep their promises. They're not timely, at all. He kept saying bring the car back. But I can't trust this guy anymore. I don't want to be ripped off any more. I know that is his purpose from this point forward. He's like a leach sucking money off without providing the service I am asking. Again, this place burned me. Don't let it burn you off too. There are many other alternatives for European cars even in close proximity, if that's the reason why you think about going here. Do not support this conman. You will regret. RIP OFF ALERT. Henry, the owner of Lakeside International Auto, is a liar and a cheat. DO NOT utilize this shop. I went in to get a headlight bulb changed. Henry did not have a replacement bulb in the shop and said he'd get one delivered immediately. After waiting for an hour I asked if I couldn't go to the auto parts store 2.5 blocks away and pick one up. Henry said the bulb I needed was not available in an auto parts store, "they are specialty items" used only on this model of car for 1 year. I didn't have time to wait any longer so I asked him to put the burned out bulb back in so I could leave. He did and I left. I stopped by another auto repair shop and asked about getting the bulb changed. They did so and assured me that the bulb was not a specialty bulb. I took the burned out bulb and the box the new bulb (an H7) came in, thanked him and left. I took the burned out bulb and the carton to an auto supply store. They assured me that the burned out bulb was not a specialty bulb, that the repair shop had replaced it with the correct bulb and said that they had about 30 in stock. When I told them about my experience with Lakeside Auto, they said "Oh, Henry, he's always got a story" and laughed. I took the burned out bulb and the carton to another auto supply store, the one near Lakeside Auto. They too examined the burned out bulb and assured me it was a common bulb, that new bulb was the correct replacement, and told me that they have more than 20 in stock. About a year ago I went to Lakeside Auto with an after market part to be installed that would allow me to play my MP3 player through the car radio. The part plugs into the radio where the antenna plugs in and the antenna plugs into it. Henry charged me $450 to install it. I paid it because I trusted Henry AND I didn't ask the cost to install before I asked him to do it. Henry said it was a very complicated installation and it took several hours to install it. When I recently had the car radio replaced I watched the technician pull the radio exposing the point where the antenna plugs into the radio. It took him less than 10 minutes to do so, and about three minutes to put the radio back in. My next communication about Lakeside Auto will be with the Illinois State Attorney General. read more

Henry is cool. One of those great mechanics who loves to stand around and talk about your car with you. I needed a bunch of work done on my Range Rover 4.0, and I was referred to Lakeside by the dudes at Ashland Tire & Auto. One thing is for certain: this guy knows these trucks. He owns one himself, which is always a heartening thing. I had a pile of work to be done: four new brake pads, two new bellows for the air suspension, a complete overhaul of the A/C, some minor electrical problems, an oil change, and a partridge in a pair tree. Henry called every step of the way to explain what he found, tell me how much it was going to cost me, and how long it was going to take. For all of that, he had the car only two full business days, and only that long because he had to order one of the bellows. I'm not sure it could have gotten done any faster. The total cost was pretty backbreaking, but not any more than it would have been anywhere else (maybe even less?), and it came with some helpful advice--like, don't waste anymore money on premium gas because the engine is designed to take regular, and don't bother trying to fix the little niggling problem with the power locks until one of them goes out completely (because a less honest mechanic would replace all four locks and charge you for them). I've got perfect faith in this guy to keep my car on the road for as long as I want it, and I'm thrilled to have found a new mechanic. read more

My husband got a great deal on a late 90's Range Rover on eBay. Trouble was, shortly after we got it, we realized why the owners were happy to sell at such a low price. After taking it to a couple of shops in the West Loop and Wicker Park area, supposedly good with imports. One of them kept diagnosing a different problem, "fixed" it, and then we'd have something else go wrong shortly after we got the truck back. It was a nightmare. It added such a yucky dimension to my marriage...the truck was this nagging, frustrating issue that we kept having to throw money at. There were so many trips to the shop and no one seemed to be able to identify the exact source of the problems, much less fix them. Finally, as a last effort before ditching the truck, I looked for recommendations on Yelp. Thankfully, we found Henry and Lakeside International. On our first visit, Henry immediately assessed the problem and explained why all the attempted fixes in the past just didn't work. We left the car with him, fingers crossed...when we went to pick it up, it drove great. Not like new (the car has over 100k miles) but WAY better than any time before. He completely fixed the problems that the other shops were saying were unfixable, or could only be fixed by replacing the engine and transmission. I highly recommend Henry for your import auto needs. You can tell he totally loves and knows cars, and I get the feeling he'd be honest with you if he didn' t know the answer to an issue. I have been going to Lakeside international for the past 6 years since I moved to Chicago. I found the shop from a friend of mine who has been getting her Porsche serviced there for years. Long story short, I have felt very taken care of at this shop and I have recommended several of my friends and coworkers to have their cars serviced here as well. I have Henry's crew work on 2004 BMW M3 for all of my routine maintenance and also a few minor repairs. I often have sat in the shop with Henry waiting for my work to be done and have heard him save several callers hundreds of dollars. This is the kind of shop that looks out for the best of the car owner and is not out to make a quick buck and rip you off. They understand that if they do good service on your car, you will likely be coming back year after year because its hard to trust people in this city with our foreign cars. Give this place a shot and trust Henry when you talk to him on the phone. He likes to look at a car before he can tell you what is wrong with it just based on what your other mechanic told you. Henry and his team are by far the most honorable mechanics I've met. I've had a Land Rover and Range Rover repaired here. They are quick efficient and priced accordingly. They even go the extra mile and wash/clean your car prior to pickup. I would highly recommend if you have a Land Rover Mercedes BMW or Porsche. This is THE most honest car mechanic I have ever met! I have a 2010 Mini Cooper and recently my air conditioning went out as well as it seemed like my car was burning oil. I took it to one guy and he told me that I need a new air conditioning compressor as well as there were two oil leaks. He wanted to charge me $5,300!!!! So I took my car to lakeside, where the owner told me, let's get it up on the lift and see what's happening. Literally called me the next day and said, he recharged the air conditioner with freeon changed out the filters and plugs, did an oil change and the car runs like a dream!!! All for $800! Henry aka "Hank" is a great guy, a good friend and an honest technician. I have known Hank since 1984 when I moved to Chicago. I am an NIASE Certified Master Auto Technician. I worked for Hank for a few years then went on to my own business. Hank does an admirable job despite having some "scam artist customers" who own cars too expensive for them to maintain, then they resort to all sorts of crooked behavior instead of honorably paying their bills. Hank is so loved by most of his customers they give him blank checks, yes blank checks, I have seen them myself. He repaired the cars, billed the right price and never abused the blank checks. Hank happily works on any car from Rolls-Royces to Yugos never judging people. Hank if you read this after all these years you are a true mensch. Shalom brother. read more

This guy is a CRIMINAL! Don't go here! My A/C wasn't working so I took it here and asked Henry to give me an estimate. I left the car with him overnight because he told me he couldn't diagnose the problem without letting it run for an hour. The next day, he called me and told me it would be $1,800 to replace the entire A/C unit. WHOA!? I didn't really need the A/C fixed so I told him that was way more than I was expecting. Hearing this, Henry LOST HIS MIND!!! And started screaming at me over the phone. Something along the lines of "I don't work for free" so I calmly asked him how much he would like for the estimate... 3 times... while he continued to scream at me. By now I was surely not giving him my business. Then.... he yelled to "Come get your f....n car then." Well, ok... When I got there he continued to berate me and tell me he was a businessman. (he wasn't acting like one). That he was giving me a fair price and I was wasting his time. He kept screaming about how I had to pay for the estimate and each time I asked "Ok, how much" but he just wanted to yell. I finally saw a sign on the wall that said "$50 estimates" so i just put $50 on his desk in cash and asked " Can I just have my car?" Side note: A few months later when I took my car in for regular service to the Volvo dealer they fixed it for $359... $1,400 less than Henry. He's a crook and a lunatic. read more

I actually have to rescind my review of Lakeside International Auto Service...After getting my brakes and rotors replaced a couple of years ago and after $1100, i found a new mechanic and he said he could have done the work for $600-$700. So i got snowed...I forgot I even had this review up until now...When I needed my Service B done Henry sad it would cost me about $800...I took it to my other mechanic and he did my Service B and charged me $359!!! I now no longer own the Mercedes and am glad that I will never have Henry work on our car and rip us off.... read more

Having moved to the neighborhood a couple months ago I wasn't sure where I could take my Infinity G35 Coupe in for quality service maintenance. I reviewed their website, and it seemed professional. I checked out the building on Google maps, and it looked like a hole in the wall as the other garages in the area do. But I was pleasantly surprised. Henry and Willy were very professional and polite. I called in at noon on Monday to schedule my car to be dropped off, I left it with them that evening shortly before closing after getting a fair price in writing for the service and parts, and they were calling me up at noon the following day saying my car was ready to be picked up. Not only did they do a great job on the workmanship and were a pleasure to deal with, but they also washed my car to perfection and buffed out 2 little paint spots my parking spot neighbor put in my door.... for free!!! I will definitely be going back for my next service. read more

I've been taking cars to Lakeside International Auto for a few years now. I was taking my BMW to the dealer while it was under warranty. There was an issue that I kept complaining about but the dealer could never find it. When I described it to Henry he found it on the first try and permanently fixed the problem. My wife loves her Land Rover with 110,000 miles on it (too bad I didn't know my wife when the car was new). We've brought it into Henry several times for several different problems. Each time, Henry finds and permanently fixes the problem. There was one time when her Land Rover would intermittently not start, but Henry couldn't reproduce the problem. He gave her his cell number and told her to call him when it is happening so he could drive out to diagnose the car. The problem happened a few weeks later in a parking lot down in the loop, and it was well after the shop was closed for the day. Henry actually left home and drove out to diagnose the car. Not only did he diagnose the problem of a bad starter on the spot, but he used an old-school mechanic's trick to get the car started so she could drive the car to his shop. Henry is great, but he isn't cheap. He prefers to do the job right and will use original manufacturer parts where he can. At the same time, if he can get a rebuild kit and save the customer some money he will do that. He will not get parts off of the secondary market with questionable reliability and longevity. His labor rates are less than a dealer, but are higher than the bargain-basement mechanics out there, but you do get what you pay for. Some people on Yelp have reacted negatively to Henry's personality. He is passionate about the quality of work he does and his shop's reputation. He doesn't believe in doing anything less than a great job. I've never experienced the customer service issues that others have mentioned. He has always shown me the parts of what he replaced, even when I don't ask to see them. One thing for sure is that I have never doubted the quality of the repairs or Henry's honesty. This is something I cannot say about other mechanics. read more

I was in recently for brakes and an oil change. Usual stuff. A few days later, I seemed to have killed my battery. I called Henry, and he told me to charge it and see if that worked, if not I would probably need a new one, which I did. I picked one up at an auto parts store, not a big deal. One of the problems was an oil leak. However, my parking space at my condo does not have an oil spot on the pavement indicating a problem. I spent three times what I expected. Brought my 2006 Land Rover to Lakeside at the recommendation of another shop for a suspension issue. They got me in quickly. Unfortunately, the problem was fairly serious - compounded by the fact that I had driven the car across country and ignored the FAULT WARNING for a few hundred miles - resulting in a $1200+ bill. (I suppose that's not terrible for a foreign car). The staff mechanics were really nice, helpful, well-mannered, and seemed interested in explaining everything. Henry was very good about calling to keep me updated. He had to order parts, but got them there quick so I could be on my way. I had one follow-up visit to install a sensor that had to be special-ordered, and again they got me in fast, and were done fast. I think they even washed my car (I can't be sure, but it sure looked like it). I would recommend the guys at Lakeside, and will go back when I need service for Big Red. read more

One of the reasons I'm giving Lakeside 4 stars as opposed to 5 is that I don't know enough about cars (or want to) to really know if this place merits a higher rating - my disclaimer. I have a 2002 Volvo V70 that I want to keep for another 10 years and told Henry so when I brought it in for various small fixes. The estimate was a bit of an eye opener when he called back but here is why. They went over the whole car and found a few things that the previous servicing garage (a Volvo dealer) had missed. Nothing critical but all stuff that needed to be attended to if I wanted to keep this car for a long time. He was also very honest that there was no cheap fix for the issue with one of the power door locks which the dealer had spent hours trying to troubleshoot.. I authorized the work and it was ready the same day. He even stayed late so I could pick the car up after work. Henry made a point of showing me exactly what they had done including showing me the old parts. After chatting a bit, I drove off. When I got home, I looked at the bill in greater detail and really did not see anything amiss from a pricing standpoint. Their labor rate is probably a little higher than some. Finally, after looking at the itemization, I realized that all of those 'small' fixes take time. My novice read on this place - Henry loves cars and really doesn't have time for anyone who is looking for a cheap fix. Updating my review. On the last major set of work on my car, I'd asked for a tune up and when I picked up the car, several charges were more than what I'd anticipated, some were items I'd not directly asked for and a few parts charges were for significantly more than what I would have been able to get from the dealer. I didn't challenge Henry on it at the time because I'd trusted him before and he'd done a fair amount of work for me in the past. I can't say he billed me for any work inappropriately, but he did a fair amount of work that I didn't directly ask for or approve in advance. My sense is the quality of the work Lakeside does is good, but I've shifted my repairs to another shop that consistently confirms exactly what work they will do before they do it or bill me for it. In a pinch, I'd go back to Henry, but I'd make it clear I wanted to run through all work and costs prior to him doing it. read more

When I was considering buying a used Jaguar, my mechanic suggested I switch to Henry, who he considered a specialist. I brought it to him, he evaluated the car (pre purchase) and said "if you don't buy it I would" and then refused to take any $. 10 yrs later, it died in need of a valve job I wasn't going to spring for as it's an 03. Long story short, I've grown quite fond of him as he was never less than honorable and all work done was excellent. If/when I ever had issues, they were taken care of immediately, and were a non issue. He was proactive to the point of telling me not to do things that he felt I could avoid for whatever length of time he suggested. He's the only one that ever worked on it and kept it running beautifully for the entire time I've owned it. read more

On a positive note, I think Henry knows cars, especially imports and is good at repairing them. The negative is that he will go ahead and do things without prior approval. I took my car here for regular service and the bill ended up being $1,000 with no call to have the additional work approved! In contrast to some of the reviewers, my experience with Henry and his shop has been totally positive. The first time I went in with my rare 71 Volvo 1800E I thought my exhaust pipe was loose because of a loud noise. While I was waiting to get served I asked another customer who was on his way out with a BMW whether he was satisfied with this shop. He said they are great, cheaper than the dealer, and "You are in good hands." The, Henry had me open the hood and he put his hand next to the engine. He told me to do that, too, which I did, and I felt hot air. He told me I needed a new flange gasket and for about $30 and two hours later the car was fixed. Another job involved a bunch of things and I was finally given a bill that, too, was very reasonable, almost cheap. I returned to have him install an A/C kit. It was a lot of work and some fabrication of parts was needed. But they did a great ("clean") job (per the service mgr. at Orloff Volvo) and the cost was way under previous estimates I got. I would recommend him and his shop to others with German cars, Land Rovers, or Volvos. read more

Henry will give you an estimate which is far below what the service will cost you in the end. He knowingly charged me $100 twice for getting the car diagnosed and recommended an oil change which I had just got done. Labor cost was equal to the cost of parts. Watch out. He will tell you one thing but mean another. He told me the repairs won't be more than 1k and they end up being almost 3k Henry I'm sorry but you're a rip off. The Owner is by far the most unprofessional owner that I've come across in all my years on this earth. We have been using his services for at least 5yrs. He started off as this really nice guy, giving us what we thought was friendly advice about our vehicle and oogling over my wife. We'd spent countless of dollars on our vehicle, trusting his every word about WHAT ELSE was needed to keep our vehicle running in tip-top shape. Fast-forward and we had our transmission re-built and he supposedly used an outside source for this, but months later and within the warranty agreement for the transmission, we took it in because the transmission was slipping. All was still well with us and Henry. Until the pick-up day.. We picked our vehicle up and upon leaving the facility, we heard a knocking sound that wasn't their prior to us dropping it off to be serviced. We called back to Lakeside, but Henry wasn't there when we picked it up and he wasn't there when we phoned back. We spoke to one of his workers and was told that he couldn't write up anything for us. We drove it around for a few hours just to see how it was driving, but later returned our vehicle. Henry was still not there. The next day, we call Henry and had him on speaker phone, and he tried to tell us that it was something else that was causing the knocking sound. Now, as I stated above, that our vehicle went in Lakeside without a knocking sound.. So, how is it that its going to be returned to us with a knock that wasn't their prior to our vehicle entering Lakeside Intl. We tried explaining this to Henry, but I guess he'd gotten up on the wrong side of the bed today. He started screaming, and saying.. "Listen to Me, you motherfucker" and kept on with the Motherfucker word. He's very lucky that we weren't in front of him, because somebody would've been seriously hurt. When you are a service giver, you are not to be name calling, or getting in an upheaval about the MONIES THAT YOUR CLIENT HAS SPENT. We spent our hard earned money on a service and to spoken to like this was and is unacceptable!!! We Will Never Go Back To This Facility and Will Not Recommend it to ANYONE! Henry, clearly needs to seek anger management and possibly needs to let someone else handle the business, as he doesn't do a good job with servicing nor with the general public. When was the last time you brought a car to be fixed and the shop owner refused to charge you? We trust Henry with our 2006 MB CLK 350 and our 2007 Acura MDX. Just brought the CLK to him to check out a warning light for the passenger air bag. After Fletcher Jones gave us an estimate for $300 to do diagnostics -- not necessarily to fix the issue, mind you -- I took the car to Henry and he found that the wire harness to the seat sensor had worked its way loose, he fixed it by plugging it in, and refused to charge!! Look Henry and his team are extremely deep technically to work on Range Rovers. I agree the price points are tough to stomach, but he is far better than the "trainees" at the dealership. He's always been fair and honest, has cut me deals on things that took a LONG time (i.e. tracking down an electrical issue) and has saved me A LOT of money over the dealership. My father was a pit crew mechanic so I know and understand more than the average person when it comes to cars, and I've never found Henry to cut corners or try to pull a fast one. He's a pleasure to deal w/ and his mechanics are first rate. They regularly attend courses updating their knowledge and will ALWAYS save the parts they replaced and thoroughly explain all that was done. I have recommended Henry to friends and they've all been very satisfied. He's VERY picky and won't let it out of his shop unless it's perfect (which can be frustrating if waiting), but it's certainly worth the wait and the not-so-convenient location! read more
