I've always been meaning to try this place so my friend and I decided to have lunch here. Very easy to find parking, there are tons of 1-hour street parking in front. We ordered their roti canai and beef skewers, I had their Laska with mixed noodles (vermicelli and yellow noodles), and my friend ordered a rice dish. The roti canai was soft, crispy, and delicious. It was homemade. I enjoyed the laska because it wasn't too spicy and I can't really handle extremely spicy food. The skewers were a bit tough but I really liked the side of coconut rice (I think that's what it is) and peanut sauce. The owner is very nice! This place is very accommodating as well. Hmm - reading over my original review - I think I really wanted to like this place and I probably gave it a strong 'benefit-of-the-doubt'. Local and exotic and run by ambitious and earnest crew - what's not to like? Probably one of the better bubble tea places in the area, but on return visits, I'm finding I'm getting less and less enamoured with Bo Laksa. Tried the beef rendang and pork curry - the rendang was fragrant and tasty, but the beef was overcooked and chewy. The pork was good, but the curry was a bit too watery and bland for my liking. Combining the pork and the rendang would have probably blew my socks off - but it's probably not fair to mentally reconstitute best parts of the each dish together. Not to say it was bad - it was still solid, but it didn't have the 'wow' factor that I remembered. CAUTION: BO NO LONGER RUNS THIS ESTABLISHMENT (CHANGE OF OWNERSHIP) Bo (the original owner of this establishment) no longer runs this restaurant anymore, so the quality of food and service has suffered immensely. I found this out the hard way when I visited tonight, and ordered a few of my usual dishes, and the quality didn't turn out the way I liked and remembered. The waitress that took my order wrong even had the guts to argue with me when the wrong dish arrived at my table. At the end of the meal, when I took a sneak peak of the kitchen, I noticed that Bo was nowhere to be seen, and neither was his wife present. I also noticed that the kitchen crew was filled with unfamiliar faces, and an older man was hanging around the cash tilt. He told me that the business had been sold for more than 6 months now. Needless to say, I am quite disappointed because the quality of food and service isn't as good as what I remembered. Many of the dishes still taste similar, but it's not on point like before. Seriously good, and for the most part, very authentic food. Having had Roti Canai at nearly every Malaysian place in town, I think I can safely say that these are the best I've had. In fact, they are better than many I've had in Malaysia. Can't say enough about them! The Laksa, like a "curry", is different in every place you try it. Here, the chicken is marinated to great effect, and the gravy is spicy and coconutty as you would expect. The only one I've had better has been at the sorely missed Orchid Delight (Pauline and Michael, we miss you!), and occasionally at Mamma Lee's (nee Cafe D'Lite), when they are having a particularly "on" day. The real gems here though are the salads. Some are Thai in origin, and some are Burmese. The fermented tea leaf salad is fabulous, and the green papaya salad is a finely nuanced masterpiece, with the sweet, salty, sour, and chili in perfect harmony, along with funky nuggets of dried shrimp. Whenever I have business int his part of town, I always plan to stop in for lunch. Although the people who run it are lovely and very friendly, this is not a place to come to for grade A service. This is the third time my food group has eaten here. We keep coming back here for a reason it is amazing! The couple who run it from Burma are very nice and the food and service are always outstanding. The fermented tea salad is a must try one of my favorite dishes. The Laksa is huge and heart warming and flavourful. The roti canai is the best in town hands down. It rivals any I have had in SE Asia. The spicy squid, manga salad, papaya salad also round out my list of my haves when I go here. I'm confused by the guy below, who says portions are small and also about the décor. This is authentic food in authentic surroundings and definitely not for the generic (yawn) Cactus Club chain crowd. Portions are not small. I've just moved to "East Village" with my partner and Laksa King has quickly become a staple for us. That being said, I only tried the Laksa on my fifth or sixth visit. We start every meal with the roti because its hand made and flaky and delish. The mee goreng is amazing, the laksa is very tasty and the service is friendly. Worst I've had, ever. Not even remotely like any Nasi Goreng I've had before, in many Malaysian restaurants over many years, and not all of them stellar. I had a hot tip about this restaurant that I live 3 blocks away from, and never paid any attention to, so I went and checked it out the other day. It was totally mind blowing, the food was cheap but not creepy, everything had its own distinct taste, the spices tasted fresh and were done amazingly, all the servings were pretty large. Best laksa in town, no doubt about it! For those who do not know, laksa is a spicy curry broth based noodle soup commonly accompanied with toppings such as eggs, chicken, lime onions, coriander, bean sprout etc. Usually one can find laksa in Malaysian and Singaporean restaurants in the Vancouver area but none has the intensity of flavour as Bo Laksa. I don't know if they make the curry broth from scratch or from a pre-made paste. If they bought it in, I would be very disappointed. But assuming they make the broth, it's quite close to an authentic bowl you would find in Malaysia. It's also not very expensive either. For $8 or so, you can get a large bowl of goodness. My only complaint is that it took them too long to get the food to the table. Laksa should be rather quick to prepare. I would come again to try their other menu items. I heard their Mohingar is pretty tasty as well. read more

Tried the laksa, the roti and the curry chicken on coconut rice. Laksa is very flavorful, a little bit on the smaller side for $9.50 but worth trying. Hard to understand the high rating. You pay $9 to $10 for a bowl of noodles which was served with minimal amount of meat and vegetables, not to mention the noodles itself is also small in quantity compare with other restaurant. The soup base is good but not enough to make me want to drink a few more spoonful after I finished the "meal" in under 5 minutes. After we left the restaurant, My wife and I were still hungry that we ended up having our last night pizza at home. I am a skinny guy with a small appetite. I will be amazed if an average person can feel full after a bowl of Laksa at this restaurant. There were customers who arrived after me and got their hot entree orders much earlier!! I had to wait 1/2 hr for my small salad!!!!!! We ordered one small Roti and added another one later on, the owner charged us one large Roti instead of two small ones, saved one dollar! But why only three stars? To be honest, the owner is nice but roti was the only dish that stood out. Also, they were extremely short of staffs, we waited so long and just the roti took more than 15 mins. This is seriously a place that will hit the spot in every way - from the steaming fragrant smells to your salivating tastebuds to all the way to the bottom of your stomach. It's nourishing while oh so tasty with all the spices that just leaves you going for the next bite that can't get any bigger! I never thought Asian food could be so hearty, but that's what good Laksa is! I've heard of other places around town for good Malaysian food, but somehow they've always just missed the mark. Either taste wise it wasn't as flavourful as the price would suggest, or if it's a more affordable place for a quick-bite I still wouldn't be able to find something to keep me coming back. But I will definitely be coming back to this little eatery so I can try the rest of their menu. For first timers, the must haves are 1) Roti - the texture alone will blow Tropika's roti out of the water as it is thick yet still so flaky that it breaks like a beautiful piece of pastry. 2) Laksa - I bet you don't want to share it, but you only do so you can save some room to try something else on the menu. You get the option of either yellow noodle or vermicelli - but my suggestion is to go 50/50 on both noodles! Lastly - though the name of the place mentions "Laksa" and "Bubbles", unfortunately the bubbles were less to be desired. They were having a July special for $2 per drink but the bubbles were clumped and I spent most of the time trying to separate them. But hey - not gonna really complain about a $2 bubble drink. I'm sure I really would give this place 5 stars if not 4.5 based on the food alone because I'm not sure I could find another place in Vancouver as good as here to satisfy my cravings for roti and laksa! read more

It is now LAKSA KING. The Thans have taken over and the Burmese food is fantastic. We didn't try the non-Burmese food so can't comment on those dishes. The three salads were excellent. Deep flavours and different textures. Only the spicy squid was well, spicy. The Sunday special soup (Kyee O) was awesome. You gotta try their Faluda dessert so leave room. Prices are decent and it is very casual and unassuming. The lamb curry was very good. The Burmese dishes are definitely unique, but in a very good way.
