Laksa goodness!! After hearing and reading so much about this place, I was finally able to try it out. A small cafe set up, with simple decor. Of course, I had to try the laksa with vermicelli noodles. After ten minutes or so, the aroma of a curry coconut broth floated through the air. A heaping bowl of goodness: a flavourful coconut curry broth, with bean sporuts, tofu, chicken, prawns, and an egg. Every slurp was delicious; I wanted more noodles just so I can savour it more. We stopped by Bo Laksa King to feed our hunger pangs with some Malaysian/Indonesian goodness. I had the signature laksa noodle soup (very top) with yellow thick noodles (vermicelli also available) and it was really good. Not bad at all and very filling for just eight bones. The soup was hot and tasty with plenty of fixings including shrimp, egg, and meaty goodness. The Mi Goreng was a pretty large portion and delicious loooking. The papaya salad was quite tasty as well and plentiful. The roti was just okay. I was very satisfied with the meal overall and we were all filled up for dinner. It's a family-owned neighborhood joint where, in pre-Covid time, you could walk in and settle in a vintage diner-style environment after being out there in the cold...to eat a steaming bowl of laksa! We arranged our tourist activities one day to be sure to be on this side of town to have dinner at Bo Laksa and then off to Bollywood honeymoon! Got there a bit early, so had to wander around but when they opened and we got in, everything smelled great. and the two women working (mother and daughter/cousin?) were friendly welcoming and just plain nice. The place is a true hole in the wall and if you blink you'll miss it. After having had disapointing laksa at other places in town we were keeping our fingers crossed. We started with a sale, who's name I forgot to jot down, that had a lot of ginger, peanuts, and other great things. someone do me a favor and post the menu! Anyways, laksa, roti and some pork curry rounded out what we got. The Laksa was yummy and closer to what I remember having in Singapore. Hit the DC need for good laksa very nicely. The pork curry used pork belly which was a nice treat. Very deep flavors. Not really spicy. The roti fit the bill for me. Also about what I remembered from Singapore. The right texture and the right flavors. While we waited for our food, they gave us a cook book to look through on burmese food and I'm all fired up now to get that book and try some things out. read more

We were born and raised in Malaysia. My family and I travelled over an hour to get there. It was disappointing, to put it mildly. Ordered nasi lemak. The rice was badly cooked and had no coconut, the word lemak means creamy coconut milk. There were 3 tough strings, pretending to be ikan belis. Half teaspon of sambal (can get more if you pay more), it did not taste like sambal. Served with watery chicken curry, not sambal. My wife and I went there last night due to a lot of compliments we've been hearing. But turned out we're a little disappointed. First of all, we didn't notice it's Malaysian + Burmese until we got there. And that's why their meat has a strong taste of Indian herbs, which both of us don't prefer (it's just too strong that we don't like it's smell and taste). We were expecting more Malaysian style though. Despite the herbs: LAMB SATAY- was too dry and overcooked, the satay sauce with relatively bigger chunk of peanuts was quite yummy though. LAKSA- was okay, well, just too strong of an Indian taste rather than Malaysian one. ROTI- was so-so, honestly Seri is much better, which a little more crispy on the outside and better texture inside, and a thicker sauce. MOHINGAR (Fish broth, onions garlic, ginger, lemon grass and tender core of banana stem, served with thin rice noodle, hard boiled eggs, and split pea fritters)- was actually the best among all dishes we've ordered. Laksa King's food was everything I wanted it to be and more. Everything we ate was fantastic! I ordered the laksa (of course) and it was, hands-down, one of the best bowls of laksa I had in a long time. It was spicy, flavourful, and the noodles were cooked to perfection. The toppings were generous and I was stuffed! My friends and I went for lunch (I went with 5 others) and they ordered other things like beef rendang, mee goreng, pad thai, tom yam and they were all SCRUMPTIOUS. Not a single bad thing to say about any of the dishes besides the beef rendang, which my friend said was a bit dry. The ONLY reason I'm giving this review 3 stars is because of a few issues with the environment. First, the exhaust fan in the restaurant is either not powerful enough or wasn't working at the time we visited. The oily odour from the restaurant lingered on my clothes and hair the entire day after eating there! Second, to backpack off my previous point about the exhausted exhaust fan, I think the chef or assistant was handling some sort of chili powder and man, I WAS CRYING REAL TEARS FROM THE SPICE IN THE AIR! At many points during our lunch I'd begin crying from my eyes stinging and many of my friends did the same! Imagine that, a group of adults crying during lunch while chowing down their noodles. That's really what happened. But regardless, I'll be back! I'll tough out the stinging in my eyes to eat that laksa again. read more

Walked in on a late Saturday for dinner. 1st waitress was busy taking orders with a big table so we patiently waited at the door. About 7 min later, a 2nd waitress came out to offer to have us seated at a smaller booth seat near to the window but it was still dirty so she prompted us to wait while she cleared the table. It was about this time the first waitress stepped in and reassigned us to a smaller table situated in the path of service. I declined and said why. She said the one at the window was for a bigger group of people and it would be a 15-20 min wait. That's when I realized this Is when a bigger party just stepped in behind us. I looked at the next few tables with customers and they were all the same sized but also all had 2 people seated. This was a simple plain case of changing standards to maximize seat allocation. Usually I would be understanding enough if she was honest enough but I didn't need that bullshit and we waited for a bit already while the group just stepped in and didn't have to wait at all. This restaurant definitely looks like a place that serves burgers and fries than Malaysian food when I first stepped into the restaurant. We were seated promptly and given menus. I ordered a laksa and roti canai. My date ordered beef rendang. The food arrived shortly after we placed our order. The portions are definitely on the smaller side. However, the flavours for the laksa and beef rendang were great! The laksa hit the right level of spiciness and coconut flavour. I think there could have been more noodles for that price. I found the roti to be on the denser side than others I have tried. The dipping sauce was not as aromatic as I would have liked. Also, the side of veggies that accompanied the beef rendang was a sad portion size. It did taste refreshing for the few bites there was. Overall, tasty food experience! Is it the best I have tried? This restaurant has become a go-to when we crave for some Asian comfort food. We first found out this place when our friends suggested it so we all decided to try it out. And am I glad that we did! Now the interior has an interesting diner vibe to it and I have to say the aesthetic isn't the most pleasing in my books. But the food has led us back again and again. The laksa is to die for. I was disappointed to not find any daun laksa (laksa leaf) in it like at the other location. The noodles were also just vermicelli instead of the nice mix provided at the other location. Overall I preferred the laksa at the original location the last time I was there. But now I'm a bit worried that he may have changed the recipe there too. Don't get me wrong, this was very tasty, but it wasn't at the same quality as the one at the other location. The split pea fritters added texture to the broth as well. Unfortunately the noodles were a bit overcooked, so by the end of the dish they were really falling apart. And seriously, where was the fish?!?!?!?! That was a surprise. Perhaps this is a different style that doesn't include fish normally? Anyhoo...... While this location was good, I think they are trying to do too many things on the menu, and perhaps the individual items are suffering a bit. I now have to return to the other location and see if it is still as good as I remember it. Laksa laksa laksa! So I came here wanting laksa, expecting laksa, and getting laksa. AMAZING! Broth was deliciously creamy with a nice variety of toppings: prawns, fish ball, tofu puff, hard boil egg, and chicken. Despite its large bowl though, there isn't a heck of a lot of noodles in it. In fact, I'm pretty sure there were fewer noodles than a small pho. This was disappointing and surprising; due to its hole-in-the-wall appearance, I had expected hole-in-the-wall prices/portions. But, not a deal breaker, I'll be back to slurp this up again for sure. We also ordered a large roti to share. The pastry was amazing! Fluffy and chewy at the same time, with a bit of crispiness on the outside. I definitely prefer this texture to the too-chewy, not-crispy-enough roti of Tropika. I do, however, prefer to Tropika sauce. I'm really ashamed to admit it, but it's true. Something about that Tropika sauce makes me want to drench my already soggy roti. The biggest problem I found, was that after you've ordered its infamous Laksa and Roti... what else is good? What will my dining partner eat??? Every yelper knows it would be a faux pas to order two laksas at the same table - must try other things! We did the Penang curry - it was alright. I found its notes of star anise were overpowering, a taste which I don't love that much. The portions were also quite small, I've never gone for curry and not had curry sauce leftovers. I won't be ordering this again. Don't get me wrong, it's worth visiting, but I think next time I'm going to have to swallow my pride and let us both have the laksa. I don't understand WHY this place would get such a low rating! I was super looking forward to trying this place out. Me and my bf was planning to head to the hasting race track and decided to grab dinner here before we go. We ordered a roti, spring roll, laksa and tom yam with glass noodle (+$1). My bf got his laksa first after almost 20+mins and then the spring roll and roti came 10 mins after. The spring roll was normal, the roti was decent but both really oily. The laksa was good but not out of this world and then my bowl of tom yum came. It was such a disappointment. For $8.50 (you have to add $1 for the noodles) it barley had anything in there! Was the saddest looking bowl of noodles ever. Even the noodles I make at home is 100% substantial then this. There was literally 5 little chunks of chicken and some cut up mushrooms. I was so confused I even asked the guy working there (assuming he's the owner) if this is really what it's supposed to be like. Cuz for half an hour wait I was expecting for something definitely more filling. He said yes it's like that and it takes that long because they do not premake anything. This is tom yum soup. Even if you don't premake it shouldn't take that long. And from what I understand the longer u boil the soup base the more flavorful it will be. So we finish the dinner quickly...literally in 2 bites and paid for the bill. The owner said they gave us 10% off...which was nice. But the change we got was not from the discounted price, it was from the original amount. Seriously!?!!??! There is plenty of better places than this laksa king. Finally found the best place for laksa! I love laksa but it is hard to find the authentic kind. Usually they're made with pre-made mixtures or just too coconut milk added. Bo's laksa was sooo flavourful and I didn't have that heavy feeling afterwards. The roti canai, omg, what can I say, just melt in your mouth yumminess. I can't believe I have not found this place sooner. The server was super nice and was more than happy to accomodate my no-meat request on the laksa. Where am I...a Malaysian restaurant or a 70s diner? It doesn't matter: This is the city's BEST laksa. I would say they are indeed, the King. I know this isn't a hidden gem, but I am just brimming with joy to have found a real winner here. I had super high hopes for the Laksa at a restaurant called "Laksa King", but unfortunately I left disappointed. The restaurant has awful ventilation so from the moment you walk in you're enveloped in a very strong odour of old grease. The Laksa just lacked the punch that I'm used to. Maybe this is the style that I'm not used to, but overall I found this dish to be lacking in flavour and depth. The toppings were also pretty stingy. I was craving laksa so thought I'd check this place out again. It was my second time coming here and was sadly disappointed. Ordered 2 laksas, 1 rice dish and 1 mie goreng and a double order if roti. The roti was probably the best thing although the curry dipping sauce was a bit runny. The laksa broth was good but the bowl lacked ingredients and the chicken looked grey and over cooked. The mie goreng was a disappointment and didn't come out until everyone was pretty much done their food. The restaurant wasn't even that busy and the food came out so slowly. They missed one of our orders but wouldn't acknowledge they missed it until everyone was pretty much done eating. What's annoying is when you end up waiting forever for mediocre food and have lack lustre service. All in all not impressed and won't be returning. read more

First time going here and I was impressed. We ordered the roti, beef skewers, laksa and the pineapple rice. I also got the Burmese milk tea which was tasty but nothing to write home about; tasted like a steeped tea from Tim Hortons. Prefer thai iced tea or HK style milk tea. The roti was crispy but still soft on inside and the sauce was so good we used it for the skewers as well. The skewers had a weird texture and lacked in flavour but tasted good with the roti sauce. Laksa wasn't too spicy and had fish balls, hard boiled egg, chicken and bean sprouts. Boyfriend had the pineapple rice - said had good flavour but chicken was colder temperature the the rest of dish and was probably added after. Though they were moist and had good texture. My friend Jordan's been raving about this place, but despite the fact that my sister also lives in Hastings-Sunrise, I'm not often compelled to bus that far (I mean, it's practically Burnaby). I had tickets to a Vancouver Giants game a couple weeks ago though, so that seemed like a good opportunity to try this place out. Long story short, this is my new favourite place for cheap eats in Vancouver. We ordered enough to comfortably feed three and it was $15/person. The roti canai is amazing and the pork belly curry and drunken beef were both excellent as well, but the pickled tea leaf salad was the real surprise. It might sound a bit unusual to some people, but it's more than worth trying. If I lived closer, I'd be here at least once a week. read more

Yummy yummy yummy, I've got love in my tummy. A bunch of my friends rave about this place, so we went with one to try it. When we walked in, I was convinced my friend had tricked us and took us to a bubble tea snack place for dinner. We each ordered a drink... I got a mango slush with pearls, my friend got a lychee slush and my fiance got a mango smoothie. They don't normally make that, but they did for him. That's service. We ordered three dishes to share: a green mango salad, the butter chicken and drunken beef. I love how spicy the green mango salad is. It was an unexpected fire. I am so glad I got the mango slush. It brought me to tears it was so spicy. We ate the whole thing. I am not a big fan of dried shrimps, but I tolerated them in the salad. The mango was crisp and went well with the dressing... it reminded me of when I was a kid and would get green mangoes and bagoong (salty shrimp paste)... soooooo gooodah! The butter chicken was spicy. I thought that would be the theme of the night. It came with rice, naan and a cooling cucumber salad. The butter chicken wasn't as smooth as butter chicken normally is, but the flavour was spot on. We scraped the bowl with the naan to get every last bit of sauce. I thought the drunken beef was only okay. The beef was kind of tough and the broth it was in was very heavy on the thai basil. BUT... it cooled my mouth down. My mouth was on fire from the salad and this totally took the heat away. The chef came out and made sure everything was okay. He also came and gave us a dessert... I'm not sure what it was... he mentioned durham and semolina. It was a nice cake... not very sweet. So yummy. read more
