I know this place has been open for awhile for full food service, but I remember when it was simply a display with plastic food. The kids also remember back in the day just walking through and wishing they could eat here. Then, it finally happened, and they were so excited! Many, many years ago, I remember my oldest child finally liking chicken pot pie due to this place serving it. Well, over the years the menu has chanced, but the kids still love this experience and can't resist coming here for lunch. True, as stated in another review, the menu is super limited, but it has that charm of an old timey diner. The menu also changes from time to time, so go online before you come or look at the menu at the front before entering, because there are other places to eat, especially when the Village is also open. A couple of us opted for the half chicken salad sandwich and the cup of soup. I got broccoli cheddar and my child got the chicken noodle, but she wished she got the broccoli. We also had chips and bottles of pop, I got the Coke and it was so good and refreshing. I do not love sugar Coke unless it is from the glass bottle (this was cane sugar from Mexico, and really good, not too sweet). The other child got pastrami and cheese with mayo, also very tasty. I love a good old fashion sandwich that I do not need to make myself, it tastes like old school elementary school lunch from my childhood. We also got pies a la mode. One got pumpkin and two got mixed berry, all very good. You do not come here just for the food, this is for the atmosphere and the experience, which is worth it at least once, even though my kids will want it almost every visit. read more

Seated for a light lunch after the big lunch rush had departed. Pastrami sandwich, kettle chips, root beer. Also had a cheddar broccoli soup bowl. Chips were good, but I should have ordered the sandwich without mustard. The food is decent, but it's the diner experience and the location inside the museum that makes it fun. If you just need something to eat, go elsewhere. If you want to experience an historic diner, eat at Lamy's. Pro tip: avoid the lunch rush and spend more time viewing the museum and less time waiting in line for a sandwich. Go right after they open or just before closing for the best experience. I'm giving a fourth star for the value. Located in a museum, they would have free rein to gouge, and I hate that. But prices are very respectable for the food and service given. After walking around the Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation, we worked up an appetite and wanted to dine at Lamy's Diner. No way you can miss Lamy's Diner. You will see the McDonald's sign in front as well as the White Castle signage. We did not eat in the diner itself in fact we were outside in a comfortable booth. We ordered the lunch special which only cost $11 dollars. * Cup of vegetable soup- Brings back memories of Campbell's alphabet soup. We absolutely loved the diner located within the Henry Ford museum. We decided to skip the actual lunch "rush" by going at 11:30. We waited less than 5 minutes to be seated inside the actual diner. Service was great. I had the lunch special which was a BLT with coleslaw and chips. The Mrs had the sloppy Joe with chips. The food was delivered in 4 minutes and was excellent. She said she loved loved loved the sloppy Joe. Reminded her of her childhood. I had a bite and it was delicious. My BLT was also very good. Simple food and table service that reminds us old folk of places in our youth and show the grandkids what they are missing. It gets busy since it finally gives you another choice than Plum Market that isn't set up for quick service and not really the type of food you want during a museum visit. I will be visiting the museum more with Lamy's open again. Just need to remember what days. EBS loved eating here also but I know he would miss the Michigan Cafe just as much as I do. Lunch time and we were visiting the Henry Ford Museum. In the very middle of the museum, among a number of neon signs from past establishments, sat this authentic diner rescued from Massachusetts. Originally I thought it was just another attraction. But, no, it was a working diner with a limited menu just like most lunch diners of their day. Our server was a hoot. She was very friendly and had a welcoming spiel about how Lamy's was always open except when it wasn't. My wife and I both ordered the turkey with bacon and cheese sandwich along with chocolate frappes. The food came out quickly and was quite tasty. Stopped by with two little ones who were starving. The vibe and theme were retro and super cool. Pros: Affordable prices. Meatloaf was under $10 and soup was a few bucks. Sandwiches were $8. Pie was less than $5. As an food place inside a museum you expect $$$$ and I was happily surprised at how affordable it was. Quick, friendly service. We mentioned the kids were hungry and tired, and the waitress steered us away from the meatloaf and said the sandwiches were quicker. Appreciated the direction. Portions were pretty large. The kids shared a sandwich and my husband and I shared a sandwich and a side a fruit and it was enough food! Cons: Food was basic. White wonderbread sandwiches and basic plain chips. We just got water, but the drinks seemed $$$ - they were all the fancy retro soda bottles. No kids menu. Not a big deal if you have multiple kids as they can share a generous portion, but if you just have one, it's a challenge. I've been going to the Henry Ford all my life and had tried every dining option available except one. For years, you could walk through Lamy's Diner and see it set up with fake food and imagine what it was like in it's heyday, but you couldn't eat there. The museum has remedied that and have made it a working diner. Some of the seats are inside the diner and are the traditional booths. They added a deck with tables and booths next to it so more people can enjoy the experience. It's also handicapped accessible, with a ramp for ease. You seat yourself and can peruse the menus at the table. Choices are simple: two hot plates (meatloaf and mashed potatoes, or chicken a la king), three sandwiches: chicken salad, tuna salad, or ham and cheese. Soups are also a choice. Most diners were known for their coffee and pie. Here, there were three choices of pie: mixed berry, cherry, and blueberry. You can have them a la mode or plain. There were also floats and frappes and milkshakes and sundaes. Wanting to go with dessert, I chose the mixed berry pie a la mode with hot coffee. The waitress was quick and brought it within five minutes. While the coffee was too bitter and a miss, the pie was wonderful. Tart and fresh, each berry stood apart. The crumb topping was good and so was the bottom crust. I savored it while enjoying the atmosphere. The diner is probably the best option at the museum. The atmosphere is a star. With the subdued lighting and the neon glowing nearby, I found it quite romantic. A great place to propose to your foodie lover! read more

I give The Henry Ford Museum points for trying to be authentic and converting to recipes and food that would be typical of the time period. They're trying to provide an authentic historical experience. This is a fun restaurant and definitely an experience that some will want. But I'd suggest going for dessert and skipping the meal. The problem with authenticity here is that flavor wasn't exactly as popular in the 1920's as it is today, so the food is quite bland. The second problem is that the prices aren't quite as authentic and the food is quite pricey - $10 for a sandwich you could get for $4 or $5 at a local Coney Island restaurant. This is all the worse as you stare at menus from 1926 listing two donuts for 5 cents, vs $1.50 for 1 now, or a few cents for a sandwich vs $10 now. When I visited this past weekend, I tried the tomato soup (strangely lumpy, but definitely homemade), the chicken salad sandwich (quite bland and served on untoasted white bread - toasting costs an extra 5 cents), and a frappe (a sort of milkshake but not great). My family also tried the meatloaf (once again bland) and the tuna salad sandwich (also bland). So, in conclusion, go for the ambience and splurge on one of those $1.50 donuts (which actually looked pretty good!), but save your appetite for another of Dearborn's numerous fine restaurants. read more

It's really cool that the Henry Ford Museum would take this old diner that was originally located in Marlborough, Massachusetts and put it in their museum. It was originally built in 1946 and purchased by a WW2 veteran who operated it for many years. After many years in business, it finally closed and was allowed to decay, that is until the Henry Ford Museum bought it and restored it first as a museum piece and then restored again to it's current state as one of the museum's restaurants. What a fun way to live history. Having lunch in a real diner. You may either eat inside the diner which seats about 30 to 35 or you may sit on the terrace and watch the tourists go by. Either way, it's a nice respite from all the walking. They have a small menu, but enough choices to find something you'll like. There are several sandwiches, desserts, soft drinks and coffee to choose from. Just enough of the basic, easy to prepare foods to give you a little something to keep you going. If you love history, you need to go to the Henry Ford and be sure to try out Lamy's Diner. read more

Food options looked really good there, but steeped in so much history (Kennedy's presidential limo, Rosa Parks' bus, an authentic Dodge Caravan), I felt like I couldn't resist a 1946 Diner Car in the heart of the Driving America exhibit. Try the Meatloaf! The sign enthusiastically proclaimed. Typically, I would NEVER try the meatloaf, but the rather limited (ahem, focused) menu options combined with the bacon in description conspired to call my name loudly. When my pleasant, authentic Dearborn server Alex told me it was the original Lamy's meatloaf recipe, I knew I'd made the right choice. The gravy makes this dish! I got it on the side as I'm typically not a gravy guy, but this thick brown deliciousness is the perfect compliment to meat and mashed potatoes. Five stars if they had 3 more menu items. Is it sacrilegious to eat food in a museum? Not at the Henry Ford, where the displayed museum piece is revamped into a diner, welcoming members to sink their teeth into the past. Lamy's Diner has been restored to look just like it did in 1946. The outside has the 'rail car' design and the inside holds curved ceilings, lined beautifully with wood and holds bar and booth seating. Prices for each food item average .55 cents and are still displayed (but customers pay modern day prices averaging about $7 for a meal). Lamy's diner completely transports you so much so that I was expecting Lucille Ball or Bette Davis to walk in and order a coffee at any given moment. The food stays true to what was served all those years ago. Everything is pretty basic like sandwiches, meatloaf with mashed potatoes, chicken noodle soup, apple pie, marble cake and ice-cream sundae. The sandwiches come with Better Made chips and you can order a Faygo pop to go with it (both of which are Detroit classics). Vegetarians and vegans may be left out (the only non-meat sandwich offered was a pb&j) which is somewhat expected since most of the population in 1946 consumed meat and fur was very popular in the fashion scene. Service was excellent, even though it was busy. If the food isn't your thing, I still highly recommend Lamy's Diner for the unique experience of modern day time travel. I haven't eaten a full meal here (yet!) but I am SO SUPER PSYCHED that this is a functioning restaurant now! From the time I was a kid visiting the HF Museum I wished that I could actually grab a bite here and now I can! The food is pretty basic--mostly prepared sandwiches, a few desserts and beverages--but still, EXCITING! The food at the Museum and Greenfield Village is quite good so I have high hopes that these 'wiches will be awesome too. I popped in after checking out the Titanic exhibit at the museum for a quick snack and a drink. Unfortunately it was close to closing time so they were only doing desserts so I decided just to go with some liquid refreshment. I got a bottle of Faygo (LOVE that they serve Faygo) and my fella got a cup of coffee. It was delightful to sit in this old timey diner and enjoy a beverage. The view of the big McDonald's neon sign was also really fun and we took a ton of pictures. The staff was REALLY attentive. We only had beverages but they checked in on us often. They also didn't seem phased by the fact that we came in right before closing. I appreciated that. Really looking forward to my next visit. The only reason you should go to Lamy's Diner is for the atmosphere. It's an adorable 1946 New England diner shaped like a railcar. You can still see the original menus posted with enviable $0.50 prices for most meals. The actual 21st century prices are much, much higher. Considering that this is smack dab inside of a museum, high prices should be something one would expect. I spent $6 on an ice cream float. The menu is small and primarily consists of soups and sandwiches. I strongly recommend visiting during off-peak hours to avoid waiting in line. It's a cute - but cramped - place to sit down for a few minutes and enjoy a drink or bite to eat while you wander the museum, but don't expect anything gourmet. read more

(if you eat inside the dining car) Look around and notice all of the little vintage quirks. - They serve delicious floats, and you can swap root beer for some of their other soda flavors. - It's a perfect break in the middle of a tiring museum day I can't say the food will be amazing. I can't recommend the meatloaf because it was smothered in way too much gravy to be able to see what I was eating. But I will still recommend dining here. Wow! This place is super cool. Originally built in Massachusetts in 1946 - thank goodness the Henry Ford Museum acquired it and we could eat here! Everything is original, they even have the original menu posted. I love little time capsules like this place - my heart was happy being here. The staff were really friendly and knowledgeable about Lamy's history. I got a milkshake and it did not disappoint! Neither did my father-in-law's pumpkin pie with ice cream - delicious. My husband got coffee and a plain donut - totally hit the spot. The tables and bars were clean and the food wasn't overpriced. Try and get an inside booth if you dine here. Service is quick, but mainly due to the very limited menu of soups, sandwiches, and meatloaf. There's nothing wildly tasty about the fare here. But it does do the job. The meatloaf reminds me of hot lunches in grade school with the canned mixed green bean and veggies. But glancing around inside at the old windows, tableside jukebox, and old diner decor really does take you back. If you're really hungry, I'd save your stomach for a full menu diner outside of the museum. I do recommend however l, grabbing a booth or bar stool seat inside, order a shake or a pie to share, and enjoying the ambience inside before jetting back to the museum. read more
