Every time I come to Columbus for my annual training, I make it a point to stop by the farmers market and visit Lav Viet for some truly great pho. This time I had the Mana Lan pho, and it was excellent as always--rich, flavorful, and perfectly prepared. Quick for Vietnamese food, the pho is okay if not a big portion, the nem nuong cuon (spring rolls) are on the skinny side. Some places the food court vibe works out and I appreciate why they do everything in plastic, especially the spring rolls, which are pre-packed singles - when they get busy there's no other way they could keep up. read more

I came here for a quick lunch before hitting the road, and I was decently satisfied. The grilled steak banh mi sandwich is pretty tasty, with lots of steak and spring roll veggies. The food came out quickly and it seems like they have their own nice little seating area within their corner of the North Market. Been coming here for a couple decades now I believe. I met the owner randomly at the Asian festival many years ago. They were closing and he didn't want to sell me anything because it wasn't fresh, so he gave me all of their leftovers, around 5 bags, with the promise that I would go visit them at the North Market. I believe I have paid him back and then some. It is the only place I eat at when I come to the market. I have been to Vietnam a few times now and the food is just as good as it is there. I have seen many different workers be there. I used to know everyone. COVID changed a lot of things. They seem to do everything To-Go style now although you do have the option to stay in eat. You used to get the phò and rice and noodle bowl in a beautiful porcelain bowl, now it all comes in tubs. The girl at the counter isn't that nice, but she has gotten better I have noticed. This is a raving review! Food suggestions: Phò is really good. Sometimes I get it split with both chicken and shrimp. Not on menu so ask. ALWAYS get the Hoison sauce and sweet chili sauce. I was excited to come dine in on a delicious bowl of pho as I was out of town and saw wonderful reviews from here on Yelp. I saw the business hours stated they opened from 10:30am. Upon arrival at 10:32am, the man at the register informed me that they actually opened at 11am. I've been getting chicken pho from Lan Viet in North Market for years! In my opinion, they're the best pho in all of Columbus! The staff is always super nice and very fast. Great portions! The pho comes with a little container with basil, bean sprouts, a few jalapeño slices, a lime, sriracha packet, and hoisin packet, as well as chopsticks and a spoon. I crave this pho often, the depth of flavor of the broth is unmatched!! I love the vibe of North Market too, so always a perk when I can go there! The North Market is my go-to to meet with friends or a quick bite when no one can decide where to go. There's something for everyone here! I have hesitated to try Lạnh Viet for awhile now, since I was born and raised in a Vietnamese household and was spoiled with delicious home cooked meals my whole life. Pho is something that I have missed when moving to Columbus. Walking by, you can smell the aroma of the Pho broth, that's a green flag. But, you can also see other people who are not Asian working.. which can raise an eyebrow. Their broth did not taste traditional, and was not as strong as their aromas. You really missed that star anaise and cinnamon in the broth and no charred onion was found. I wish there were combo meat options, opposed to just 1 meat at a time. I'm sure there's an add-on but for the price already, I would expect more than 2 meatballs cut in half. For the north market, the portion was fine, the pho came with veggies and your typical hoisin/sriracha. Definitely ask for extra! Meals were packaged neatly. Will want to try their bánh mì next, but will stay away from their pho for now. read more

I enjoyed my meal from Lan Viet! If you're craving something on the healthier side I think the rice and noodle bowl is a great option. I tend to prefer things with a lot of flavor and spice, and thought this could have used a bit more seasoning/flavor, but I also am newer to Vietnamese food so I'm sure there are other items or sauces on the menu I could have added to get more flavor. I don't know if other people are like me, but I'm super picky with my pho. The standard for me is the one from my hometown where I go everything I'm back home. The broth needs to bring a certain level of flavor to the dish (but not too much), the noodles have to be cooked just right, and it needs to come with the right accoutrements (e.g. jalapeños, sprouts). The one I got at Lan Viet comes close, which makes me super happy. It's not perfect (I prefer dark meat in my Chicken Pho, and that's not an option here), but they're nearly spot on for most of the key dimensions. I'm so happy to be a 15 min walk from this place and to have tried this bowl, and I'll be back soon for more. read more

We have a favorite Vietnamese bakery back home that we frequent so I wanted to try what Columbus had to offer! I had the Grilled Steak Banh Mi, and my wife had the Grilled Chicken. We both found them to be packed full of flavor! The steak and chicken were both tender and the veggies crisp. My only suggestion is that they make sure they use fresh French bread. My bread did not taste super fresh. It was sort of spongy and chewy. Banh Mi bread should be soft on the inside with a slight crunch to the crust. This did not have that. I guess that's one thing our place back home has going for them. read more

Ordered on a Tuesday night through Uber Eats. I got the pork bahn mi, pork rice noodle bowl, shrimp rice noodle bowl and a summer roll. I thought this might be way too much food for two people but it was actually perfect. The bahn mi is more of an appetizer size so it was perfect to split. The summer roll came with a delicious peanut butter sauce. Wish the order came with a second roll so I could have soaked up more of that sauce. We ended up putting it on other stuff! The entrees all had great toppings...very fresh, plenty of cilantro (my fave), and the jalapeños were fiery. The proteins were all flavorful and nicely seasoned. I did prefer the shrimp over the pork just bc there were some tougher pieces in the pork, whereas the shrimp were all consistently perfect. I love that the bowls come with both rice and noodles. As a Vietnamese person myself that has been eating Vietnamese food for a majority of my life, Lan Viet would probably fall last on my Vietnamese restaurants to eat at. I only went here because a friend wanted to try. I have gotten the summer rolls, banh mi, and a pho. The summer rolls are probably the most decent dish on the menu and the peanut sauce is pretty good. You mix it with some sriracha and you got a bomb appetizer. The pho is not my favorite. It could use a lot more flavoring and "oomph." The price for a bowl is pretty steep considering it's not a full service restaurant. You can go to another Vietnamese restaurant for a cheaper price and full service. Now I understand they are in North Market so maybe the cost of operations is higher. The banh mi was extremely disappointing for me. The baguette was soggy. A crunchy baguette is what makes a banh mi so good. The banh mi was really greasy too. There was not enough pickled vegetables and cucumbers in their to cut through the greasiness and fattiness of the meat. The seasoning and flavor was ok. You can taste some soy sauce in there. If the baguette was crunchy I would definitely enjoy it more. I think the staff there is nice, but I have never really had an authentic conversation with them. read more

This is seriously one of my favorite spots around Columbus to get pho! I always have a pleasant experience when I visit Lan Viet. The staff are so informative and welcoming, and have helped me learn about the menu and even a little about their process of making pho - they spend DAYS preparing this amazing dish! Their pho is a little sweeter than some others around town, making it unique and one of my favorites. I love to get the beef pho, with extra limes and extra sriracha too! But don't get me wrong, their broth is amazing on its own, I just love lime and spicy so I add these to mine. Be sure to try the dish as-designed before adding though, they were super thoughtful with their flavors so you definitely have to enjoy some of the broth all on it's own before going with your personal preference. This is located inside a market so there is only 3 bar seating there. There is seating upstairs in the market and a few tables scattered downstairs to sit at. We ordered 2 pho bowls with extra meat ($12+2) , 2 traditional Banh mi's ($8) and a spring roll ($2.50) total was $47. The service wasn't bad but it was good either. The person taking the order was very short with everyone, I guess since it's mostly a take out place. We asked if they had a knife to cut the Banh mi in half and they didn't have plastic knifes but wouldn't cut the banh mi in the back for us. They were also a little stingy with the amount of hosin and sriracha they gave out. We did eat there at the bar. The Banh mi had a good about of meat but barely any cilantro and pickled daikon/carrot. The pho was ok but if I was going to pay $2 extra for meatballs I would more then 2 cut in half. Also they had buckets of pho broth just sitting out in front of the bar area with no lid. That made me nervous how many things could have fallen in our someone coughing if they were dining there. I was a little hesitant after learning that the "protein" portion of the sandwich isn't tofu, but I went with it anyways. I was told it includes eggs, just an FYI. The staff was friendly and super fast at preparing my order. I only waited a few minutes, which gave me just enough time to explore their menu further. I took my sandwich home and dove right in. First, I loved the bread they used. Also, their soy-mayo sauce in combination with the carrot, cucumber, and diakon crunch was great. I highly recommend getting it with jalapeno. Ahhh, and the fresh cilantro was a great touch too. The veggie soy ham was not my favorite. I'm a big texture person and I think that's what it came down to. That being said, I'll definitely be back.
