it really pains me to write this because i was reallllly looking forward to eating here and I was so happy I was able to score rezzies while we were in town. Hubby and I are food fanatics and weve been to Noma, dinner by heston blumenthal, etc.etc. and were really excited for the portland food scene. My biggest complaint is the use of SALT! Overall the service and preparation of the food was phenomenal! the staff knew the menu ins and out and the drinks were great as well. From start to finish- with the exception of dessert, I thought the use of salt was just too much. the first "snack" with shrimp and grapefruit was so overly salted i had to scrape off the sauce because it was so overwhelming. It went on like this for a while but hubs kept telling me maybe they end with amazing food so u leave feeling great, but sadly it's like one of those movies that start off bad, and you forrce yourself to watch it because you're hoping for a good ending, but it never got better and u wasted 2.5 hours of your life... and over 200 dollars. read more

SOOOOO GOOOOOD & worth every penny. I'm not even going to bother with mentioning specifics about the food because they have a rotating menu, but I will say the October menu was awesome! Each dish had so many flavors that all complemented each other and tasted incredible. It is very clear that a lot of thought and experimenting goes into each dish to make it perfect. The cost is a little high, which will prevent me from eating here on a regular basis, but I do think that this meal was worth it. I love that there is a set menu because you get to try every single dish, which includes about 10 items from appetizers to desserts. I recommend putting your name on the waiting list because it seems like they call people due to cancellations quite often. I mean if you have to make a reservation ~6 months in advance, it's no surprise that they will get cancellations. Not as hard to get a table as some people make it out to be. Got a table on a planned trip to Portland less than a week for a Friday night. They also don't tell you to go to the restaurant next door. Yelpers helped me find the way in. People are over singing the praises of this place. I'm not saying the food isn't good but it wasn't life changing or the best in Portland. There is a lot of hype to this place and they are milking it for all they can. I didn't like the main course dishes but my friends did. Everything was good but small portions for $80 a head, I don't care if it's a tasting menu. Tasting menus are very profitable with little waste for a restaurants so don't fall into the excuse trap. Don't go in odd numbers because they don't give you extra when you have to share from what I can see. The look was laid back and the secret door is fun (but obviously a secret door). The staff seem to overflow at times. Go once for a date or a special evening out but I can't see anyone going twice. read more

The staff is all extremely knowledgeable and very thorough in their service. Every dish, drink, etc is explained in incredible detail. You can definitely tell that a lot of passion goes into everything coming out of the kitchen. Everyone working seemed to be just as excited to be there as we were. The food is absolutely amazing! The amount of flavor they get into a dish is truly an art. You will definitely leave here stuffed and happy. I have been fortunate enough to have been a total of three times, and I have another two reservations forthcoming. Get on the waiting list, guys. I snagged these reservations, at 6pm on Friday, that way. It's a lot more likely than you might think! While so much of the food scene is about subtlety, Langbaan puts it all out there. You'll experience so many sensations at once you won't know how to sort through it all. What I do understand is at the end of the meal, I can't wait to do it again with totally different tastes. Wow. Just wow. This was not just a meal, this was an experience. So much love, thought, & creativity was put into every bite. The only problem was that every course was so delicious, it left me wanting more. But isn't that the point? All of the courses were good enough on their own, but all put together, it was a perfect symphony of textures & flavors. And the price is so reasonable at $65/person. Worth every penny. The only problem I have is that I can't go back whenever I want. Not sure if I can wait 6 months to go again! Also, I wanted to give props to the restaurant for sticking to their guns the night we were there (4/11/15). A party of 14 reserved most of the restaurant & they apparently decided to just bring 2 extra people. Can't do that at a place like this, idiots. They were told very diplomatically that they could not accommodate 2 extra people due to food & space constraints. They tried to argue, beg, & barter to no avail because 2 people had to leave. Where to start? This was a feast for the eyes and the palate. As noted by others, the menu changes monthly. So it's a waste for me to tell you the food to expect. You can expect Thai haute cuisine on a level you've never experienced. And things you've not seen, unless you have a Thai grandmother at home, in that case call me, I'll bring the drinks and dessert! I will say, the beef cheek soup was amazing. Beautiful broth. Subtly spiced. Wonderful aromatics. Arguably one of the top three soups I've tasted in my short life. Thanks to my line of work I've had the pleasure of slipping in to sit at the bar here several times. The array of unique plays on Thai food and drink pairing (only $30 extra and well worth it) leave you having enjoyed a full culinary adventure and not just having sat down to a simple meal. Yes, the main complaint is that it's difficult to get a reservation but this is an experience that I'll gladly wait for because it's meant to be an intimate, personable experience for the consumer and scaling the production and size of the restaurant up would lose that. My company (Discover Portland) just worked with Earl and his team on an event called Back of House at the Ace Hotel where 60 special guests, invite only, got to hang out with 5 of Portland's top chefs for an opportunity to get to know them more. Lang Baan was an integral part in the success of the event. His team set up a great, private room for guests and served a dish not many will forget for quite awhile. He took his wonderful restaurant experience and gracefully brought it to the event and all the attendees loved it. They are not only an amazing restaurant of great Thai food and drink pairings, worth the wait, but also a wonderfully humble and sweet team of people to work with. By far the best Thai food we've had the pleasure of eating in Portland. The food was simple, but flavorful and well prepared. Its a tasting menu with optional drink accompaniment. I was a bit thrown off by some of the drink offerings- sherry really? My husband and I went off on a drunk Julia Childs tangent when we saw this, but I digress. Anyways, the sherry actually worked. Wine and beer filled out the other offerings. For the smallish pours the $30 price tag seemed steep, but there were quite a few beverage offerings. As for the food the tasting menu was $45 ($60 for the lobster salad and halibut extra which perhaps I would pay for next time since the plates were on the smaller size and I could have used a few more yummy items). This is not a place for the vegan, gluten intolerant kind. We were served everything from fish to spot prawns to beef. The more liberal you are in your diet the better off you are. Not everything worked- some of the initial small bites were too heavy on the fish sauce, but I loved trying new flavors and the whole experience was fantastic. Big props to the excellent servers. I feel kind of spoiled coming from SF (my god I loved the Thai food in SF), so I'm so thankful to see this creative endeavor in Portland. Totally recommend and we will certainly be back... read more

We decided to go all in and spring for the extra $30 for the wine pairing which was beautifully done, and plentiful. First - I'd definitely do the pairing on the next venture down the Thailand roots with Langbaan. Though, I would agree with Melvinator, with suggesting maybe a more traditional Thailand alcoholic pairing. Its not sificult to find some Thai originbeer/liquor resonating that tastes of homeland. Snacks, was and mini bomb in our mouths. Collectively, we said delicious! Definitely, a great rendetion of Thailands flavor. Coconutty, clammy, soupy, fish saucy delicious. All cuisine should just be like this, be as explosive. 3 in all i believe. A rice noodle wrap, crunchy bowly thing and a shrimp wrapped on bental leaf. Simply the best dining experience we've ever had. The service, the food, the atmosphere, the attention to detail. I even loved the cool door that we used to enter! The entire staff was incredibly sweet and helpful. The wine pairings were fantastic and much like each food course, explained thoroughly. I went to Phuket Cafe and which is the outside area in front of Langbaan with my teenage daughter on Saturday, April 13 around 6 PM. I know they would be busy but thought we'd try anyway. We saw some open tables outside so I thought we'd go inside to ask if there was any opening. I smiled at the hostess to say hi but before I could even opened my mouth, I am dead serious here, she rolled her eyes at us. I tried to ignore that and politely asked if there happened to be any open table. She said that the first opening would be at 9PM. I just wanted to make sure that she knew I talked about the outside tables for Phuket Cafe, and she lost patience with us even more (she didn't have any to begin with). She was very short with us. We were quite shocked and weren't sure what was going on and decided to leave. The first thing my poor daughter asked me once we stepped outside was, "Mom, why did that lady talk to us like that?" I told her I had no idea. I was polite the whole time. We ended up walking across the street to eat at Pixiu Mala Hongtang. Sure it wasn't as fancy but the food was good and everyone in there was nice to us which saved us from the evening that Langbaan's hostess almost ruined. read more

This is my first time eating a high end 6 month waiting list restaurant. OH and I loved it! This type of eating is not something that I could justify eating and paying for on a regular basis but OMG for a great treat or an anniversary I will highly recommend. We enjoyed a 15 coarse meal for a special new years day menu that had 4 starters a soup 3 salads 3 main dishes and 4 deserts. When the bite sized starters started coming out I thought to myself well looks like I will need some late night take out, but nope by the end I was pleasantly surprised and was very content. Everything was spectacular, but the octopus and the omlette dish was stand out to me. Desert was just ok, but that is my personal preference, not a fan of tapioca. Had my first experience at Langbaan a couple Saturday's ago and had a really great experience. We arrived about an hour before our reservation (8:45) and told the gentleman at Paadee that we were hop0ing for seats at the Chef's counter and he was able to write us in. We then spent the rest of our wait across the street at Halston's (sp?) and had a drink. At our appointed time we walked back across the street and they led us to the quirky bookcase and our seats at the chef's bar. I really recommend the chef's bar as it added to our experience watching their detailed preparation of each dish. Dishes were delicious and enjoyable. I was surprised by how many you share with your dinner companion, not a negative just an observation. It only got annoying when he was bogarting the leaves for the ground pork dish. :) We also got the wine pairings which i would recommend if only for the wine they gave us in the dessert course (ohmygod amazing). I only knocked a star as they had recently raised their prices but i didn't see that lasted anywhere so the whole meal came out a bit more than i expected. Dinner is now $90 (instead of the $75) and wine pairings are now $55 (instead of the $35). They're definitely worth the higher prices i was just surprised. Oh one tip, when you go on and are taken aback by the six month out reservations get on the waiting list. I put myself on the waiting list for multiple weekends hoping to snag some seats and i'm constantly getting notified about open seats. read more

Since Langbaan has a rotating menu every month there isn't much point to review my meal since the chances of someone else getting the same meal is slim + it's prix fixe so it's not like you can really pick a plate... What I will do is talk bout some tips and my general consensus of this restaurant. As mentioned probably a bunch below and above in the reviews this is a pop up. The space is small. Each cook kind of comes up with their own dish and thus the spread of food you will eat is each unique yet brilliant. Some dishes were strong in flavor with saltines and spices. Others were more traditional Asian with lighter flavors to the palate. It is such a fun experience to try the 16 course. Some tips: 1. Getting reservations suck. Off hand you can try 3 months ahead of time for a party of 2-4. Good luck trying to get a bigger party. The space itself is tiny. I heard if you are a single person trying to get it, it's actually quite easy and you can go monthly. 2. If you are flexible and you know you want to eat at Langbaan in a certain month, go ahead and blanket try that month. Even if the tickets are sold out, you have the option of going on a wait list. Out of the 15 wait list I tried, I got texted the day off that a spot opened up maybe 6 times. Obviously this requires insane flexibility, but it will get you in faster. 3. If you have any food allergies you need to let them know ahead of time. They are actually pretty flexible. This is DEFINITELY a foodie experience and well worth the price. read more

Perfect food service. The cooking and wait staff was stunningly attentive and incredibly well versed on the complicated courses that followed. The presentation of each course was absolutely beautiful. Our waitress mentioned that this dinner was not spicy and that had been a hallmark of the last months' menu (alas). This was cuisine focused on southern Thailand. The space was cozy, perhaps to cozy as the three of us were perched on the smallest four-top - quite the size of a large IKEA cafeteria tray. Enough with the intro. The first appetizer was shrimp, grapefruit, and herbs on an edible betel leaf. The flavor was bright and refreshing. My absolute and only favorite. The next courses, the second and third were bland and oddly chewy as if a marshmallow had been hidden inside. The ink soup was decent, the smoked mussels salad was interesting. The Lon plaa khem was bright and enjoyable as you wrapped your own portions in a small lettuce leaf - good! Quite frankly the curry with goat was bland and unappetizing- the tumeric rice was awful. I kept hoping the wait staff would clear the table quickly. A majority of the menu was too salty and way way to fish sauce oriented. Perhaps we have missed some of the more interesting and bright monthly menu presentations. With the exception of the first appetizer I could have left and probably should have. Food is so personal but sadly I felt this menu was really lacking. I felt as if it was an ENTIRE waste of over $400 - I wouldn't eat it again for free. Betel leaves, ash, chrysanthemum, tamarind, galangal, nasturtium and more. Blown away! 4 months and a day wait for the reservation, and the cost of the meal were WELL WORTH IT! This place, which can only be accessed through a secret door, is a treasure! The space is more like a basement than fine dining, but you don't care about the exposed concrete wall when the food begins. 12 courses of culinary artistry, expertly executed by a team of servers and chefs. The 7 tables and the bar space fills up, and everyone is served each of the 12 courses at the same time. I hear you, it is not just a meal it is an experience yes but Thai food doesn't cost much to have your real experience, especially in Thailand. Their authentic local food is dirt cheap, their authentic hi-end restaurants like The Mandarin Oriental is also cheap. Catch a flight to Siam and get all the true culture, plus beach and sun. I had a great experience at Langbaan the way they set everything is kind of a feel of a speak easy but restaurant style. The food was amazing. It's was nice to go somewhere where you were basically forced to try different types of food. I'm a very picky eater but was definitely able to eat everything and truly enjoyed myself. This is a great place to take your loved one or someone out on a date. But be warned it's not most inexpensive meal you will have. Tucked inside of their Pandee restaurant you would not know to find Langbaan as it's hidden behind a secret door. I was so excited to take my girlfriend to Langbaan for her birthday! I had booked a reservation for August 22nd back on May 24th. During the reservation process, I noted that I was a vegan diner and my girlfriend was not. For three months I didn't hear anything about that being a problem and the excitement grew. One week before the reservation, they informed me they could not at all accommodate my vegan dining needs. I begged and pleaded to just eat a bowl of rice or just attend and not even eat anything to ensure my girlfriend could enjoy her birthday dining experience. They would not budge and did not express any form of regret or apology for not letting me know earlier. If you are a vegan or vegetarian diner, DO NOT go here! If you're a meat eater, I'm sure you'll have a blast but don't get your hopes up if you are vegetarian or vegan. Go try somewhere else instead. read more

Phenomenal. I can't say I've really had many "upscale" or "small bite" thai experiences, but the next one will be tough to compare! All the small bites were great. I really liked the different flavors of salty, sweet, and spicy. Mmmm. Very creative menu. While some might critique its authenticity etc etc, all I can say is that it was NOT your standard Thai dinner, and definitely showcased finesse. Additionally, all the small bites were a hit (which is key, when you only have 1-2 bites to capture the senses). I preferred the small bites over the main courses, as I thought the Smoked troute had too many dehydrated shrimps which kinda made the texture a bit too crunchy and dry for my liking. The curry was delicious, but not being a huge fan of veal sweetbreads, it wasn't my favorite. (the curry though, was great and i spooned that all over my rice, haha) Was completely stuffed by the time dessert rolled around, but still polished off both dessert courses, because they were super good. Loved the pandan which had the perfect amount of jasmine flavor to make it relaxing and refreshing at the same time. Menu changes monthly. Tip! Sorry Portland... I know this is the standard for "secret" "foo foo" "elitist" restaurants but it really shows how little fine dinning experience most Portlanders have that they think this place is such a big deal.... It's not. I'm not saying I think this place is not good but for what you are paying, for the hassle of the reservation, and the snobby staff it is simply not a 5 star experience compared to any REAL fine dinning restaurant. Just because you have a tiny location with a bookshelf for a door doesn't make the food any better. Again, its not bad food, just not 5 star in relation to creativity, execution, service and certainly not value. One recent review said "This is my first time eating a high end 6 month waiting list restaurant." You don't say?... This really illustrates my point... If it is your first time, how can you really rate it? What is your point of reference? And what about waiting 6 months makes the experience better? They could easily go to a larger location to accommodate more people but then they would loose the manufactured "exclusivity" that makes most people think the food is more unique than it actually is. On the other hand, I completely agree with the review that talked about elevating traditional ingredients to make them outstanding. This place misses that mark. Nothing popped, nothing made me go "wow," no dish tasted like more than the sum of their parts. The scallops in coconut for instance tasted like well, scallops and coconut. If I could call this place a week ahead of time, if it cost $50 pp and if the wait staff didn't think the sun shined up their ass I would give this place 5 stars in a heart beat. This is Thai food, transcendent. For eighty dollars I challenge you to find another prix fixe menu that is whomping creativity's behind in such a pleasurable manner. If I had to be tied down here again for an evening, I'd be right as rain. The flavors of Thai fused with the cooking methods of other various places and traditions is taste-bud breathtaking. The wine list is unexpectedly advanced, and the restaurant also manages to churn out some cocktails that are actually worthy of the oft-overused phrase, "Craft." Should you be lucky enough to snag a reservation here due to some chump that has the audacity to cancel such an experience, I recommend you come empty-bellied and open-minded because this is where Thai food is going. Well...how can I explain my rating. First my credentials. I have eaten at multiple three (Michelin) star restaurants in the US and abroad. Second- the point of a good restaurant is to elevate the traditional ingredients and make them outstanding, not to simply take you on mundane culinary geographical tour of the country. The provincial curry they served was so unimaginative with boiled chunks of beef- I couldn't believe they were charging $75 per person for it. The Papaya salad was pungent and extremely hot - where is the refinement or elevation of the ingredients? If I wanted hot and pungent, I can go to my local Thai joint and get it for $10. I think Langbaan misses too many points for it to be considered a special dining experience. The flavors are unrefined, and so is the service. I read someone else complaining about the abruptness of the staff, I could not agree more. I would say don't waste you dining dollars here. I cannot wait for my next trip to Portland because once I book the flight, next is making a reservation at Langbaan. I would like to mention that we luckily got a reservation only because someone cancelled. (Thank you whoever you two are!) The dining experience was amazing! The food was so tasty, fresh and did I mention tasty?! I can still imagine the taste of some of the courses. Yum. I am a huge fan of Thai cuisine so the complexity of flavors presented during the tasting was a total wow factor! I had a glass of Riesling which was okay. My boyfriend enjoyed his beers. 1000% the best dining experience I've had hands down. If you're an adventurous foodie who loves to be transported to a different world, this is your place. Love the rotating menu (I believe it's quarterly now?), love the food, and the staff is incredible. It is a tad pricy for a casual dinner, but, it's worth every cent. Reservations take a while to get on, but worth the wait. Nearly 12 courses of flavor-bursting meals. I've been here three times in the past year and it keeps getting better and better. read more
