I have a '97 VW with 155k miles. I moved to the suburbs from Chicago in 2008...in Chicago, I was always either way over-changed for 'acceptable' work or undercharged for shoddy work on my car. So when the LF bearing on my car started to go bad in early 2010, I was reluctant to search for a new, local mechanic. But Yelp saved the day, and I found Lang's a couple blocks from where I worked. They were very considerate, professional and courteous--I was impressed! To take it a step further, I'm hard of hearing and can't use the phone, so Dave took it upon himself to email me from his personal email account to keep me updated on the work on my car. I had never had a mechanic do that for me before--usually they will only speak to my husband on the phone. I have stayed with Lang's since, and they had to do a couple other bigger maintenance projects on my car as well as oil changes. For the larger projects, I always request a quote over email and Dave will outline several possible outcomes for me, from worst to best scenario. Usually the work ends up being on the lower end of the quote. Each time the service is always outstanding. I usually drop the car off in the morning, then Jake gives me a ride to work from the shop. I have no intention of giving this VW up--it's awesome, fun to drive, and long paid off! Lang's has helped me keep my car running better than ever. read more

Let me start by saying that we have taken our vehicles her for a few years now and have always had great service. This week, the service went above and beyond. I had an issue the day after having our brakes repaired at Lang's. I phoned them and they sent a mechanic within 5 minutes. After diagnosing the problem, they repaired my car (without charging a thing, although the easily could have!). We had to wait on parts so we were without our car for 2 days, but I was okay with that. I got home tonight and my husband said there was a Starbuck's gift card for me on the counter from Lang's, because they felt badly that the issue had happened to me with my small children in the car!!! I mean...talking about excellent customer service!!!!These guys do great work and they now have our loyalty for as long as we require service. I am not from IL and was looking to buy a 2007 F250 from a used car dealer and had Lang's do a pre-purchase inspection. They were very thorough, listing out every scratch, ding and mechanical issue. They said the truck was in great shape overall but there were some areas of concern that I should deal with before taking the truck off-road. Knowledge is power and the list of issues allowed me to contact the dealer so they can correct the issues\reduce the price. Depending on what the dealer does I may not end up buying the vehicle but if I do buy it, the price will be reduced or the work will be done before I pay. I moved to the burbs a year ago and had no idea where to go to get my '07 Jeep serviced, specifically where I wouldn't get scammed into spending unnecessary $$. I communicated with Ray via email about some of the issues I was having with my car and after getting a bogus quote from another mechanic by my job, had these guys check the car out. What a vast difference! Issues with the car were completely different, priced fairly, and no baloney. Pat helped me with my car and he was great as well as Ray. Right by the train station so easy access. Guess where my car is going! Hard to get in quick, but if you call, they'll work with you to get you in. read more

Severely overpriced! Unlike other reviews, I found this place to be very expensive, and also quite slow. I went for a tire swap plus some brake works. I have had set of tires mounted/balanced for anywhere between $30-70 before, but this place charged more than twice as much! I was also charged more for some minor brake repairs than to have the entire brakes replaced elsewhere. It also took much longer than expected, and that certainly reflected in the labor fee. On the plus side, they had a very nice attitude toward customers and do take time to explain things. But I would not revisit this place if I want to keep my budget. read more

I was extremely happy with the work performed. They did the proper job trouble shooting the problem other places just guessed what they thought it was and quoted be on that. My truck is running great now! So from the first phone call through picking my fixed truck up they where very professional answered all my questions. I had to wait a week to get it in for them to look at it but it was sure worth the wait! The only reason there isn't 5 stars is where I used to take my truck to get fixed which is to far to take it now. Is that they always washed the truck when they finished the job. Love these folks. Took my 2003 Jetta with 74,000 miles in after I was told by another shop I needed to replace my front struts. Lang told me I did not really need it yet and would not make much, if any, difference in the drive. They test drove it with more than one person to confirm. Went to pick it up and there was no charge. On top of that I forgot to ask them to grease the drivers door as it was squeaking loudly. After I got home I realized the squeak was gone; they had noticed it and lubricated it. They never mentioned it. Guess where all my future business and referrals are going. read more

I brought my girlfriends car here for service. Ray was very upfront with me regarding their process which made me confident I was getting the best service. After inspecting her car, they determined that one of the main issues was addressed by a prior manufacture's recall and that if we took the car to a dealer they would fix the problem for free. I was surprised that although they took the time to inspect the car and identified several issues, I wasn't charged. I have a modified 2012 Audi Q5 (ECU flash, exhaust, body kit, coilover system and so forth) and I'm very meticulous when it comes to work/service being done on it. These guys at Lang's Auto Service do it right from the start. I would bring it back there w/ no hesitation. Ray is very personable, knowledgeable and accomodating. Tim, one of his technicians is very skillful and can tell he's very passionate and strives for perfection. That is a rare trait to have. I'm very glad that these guys are just around the corner from my work. I've been bringing my car to Lang's for about 4 or 5 years now since I moved back to IL from IN. Everything that I've read in the reviews so far is true. Excellent communication - CHECK Quality work - CHECK Friendly Staff - CHECK A bit higher priced than other shops - CHECK Yes, Lang's might be higher priced...but if you want work done well (and right the first time), you're going to have to pay a bit more for it. At least you're getting what you pay for here. I'd rather pay a bit more and only have to make one visit than go to the type of shop that charges less per visit but has you come back 3, 4, 5 times because they didn't fix the problem the first time. One of the hardest things to find in the world is a good, honest mechanic. I've had the Lang's staff tell me more than once that service I asked about wasn't needed. How many businesses will talk you out of spending more money? I moved out to Joliet about a year ago. I still drive 45 minutes back to Downers Grove to bring my car to Lang's. Enough said. read more

Trying to find an honest/ethical mechanic is nearly impossible, so I turned to the reviews on yelp and found Langs. I was pleasantly surprised by the friendly service, honest feedback, and fair rates! In short, it's an older car with the suspension issue that I had them check out. They called me just a couple hours later to explain the problem. I know very little about cars so I needed some help understanding the mechanics of the problem. They didn't hesitate to explain it to me in detail and offer their advice as if it were their car. Most auto repair shops wouldn't be so honest! So I took his advice and decided not to repair the problem. But I'm so impressed with them, that I am bringing our other car in for repairs and we are recommending them to everyone I know! read more

I brought my car here twice for decent-size repairs (once for new brakes and once for what turned out to be a new water pump). I'm quite pleased with the service I received both times. The new brakes were a fairly routine repair but the water pump on my car had some complications, including a part that ended up being way more expensive than Ray had estimated and took several days longer to repair. Throughout this time he kept me informed regularly, provided a labor discount to keep the total price close to the estimate despite the increased cost of the part, and even provided a loaner car to us since the repair took longer than expected and we needed a second car that last day. Lang's is a great shop! I traveled there all the from Chicago to get my service completed. I needed an oil change, and a tire rotation. Wow, the best it gets. Without any appointment, I drove in at 9am and inquired about replacing a leaky flex pipe in my exhaust system. Pat immediately said I could leave the car for examination and then he called me about two hours later with a reasonable price. I found Lang's on Yelp and the good rating has proved true. I have had my '06 Odyssey there three times now and will use them for my maintenance going forward. No more quick change oil place that does not rotate the tires. I paid the same for my latest oil change/filter/inspection/rotation as I did at the quick lube without the rotation. I have also had a starter replaced and a full brake job. They are more of an appointment place but as I can walk to home/train/coffee house this is not an issue for me. Their prices may not be rock bottom but are fair as compared to Tuffy/Firestone chains I have been to and the quality is worth the price. I found this place by doing a yelp search and I am very happy I did. I went there and had a great experience with the service provided and quality employees. I had to have my catalytic convertor replaced with is a pricey dilemma and at this point completely satisfied with the quality of service and pricing. You can tell that service and quality are important components at this place. They even took my car to get the emissions test done which was totally unexpected.
