I have gone to this place few times in the last 5 years. If you are looking for an honest car repair shop, look on further. First time I went there,they told me upfront not to put $2000 in repairing the car and get a newer one. It takes a very honest mechanic to walk away from $2000 repair. Another time, a chain place was giving me $700 repair estimate and they told me I don't need the repair. Needless to say, even if I have to wait for few days to get appointments, I prefer doing that. No, I am not their friend, relative and I am not being paid to write this review. This was long overdue from me and I am glad I finally did it. read more

I don't typically write too many reviews, but due to the lack of care and dishonesty I felt compelled to write one. After reading all the reviews prior, I went into J&C thinking I would get an honest and somewhat reasonable opinion. When they called to tell me what was wrong with my car, they found my control arms needed to be removed and replaced and stated this as well as the alignment on my car would be $778. I was floored by this pricing seeing as I've had many repairs over the years at other auto repairs and never had such an outrageous estimate. I've been a consistent customer to an auto repair in Wheaton but when I recently moved to Downers thought I should find someone reliable in town. Guess I was wrong. When I decided not to use them for their service due to pricing and I KNOW I can get this done for far less and with a more honest mechanic, they stated the inspection is $60. I have never been charged such a high price for an inspection. This should have been stated from the very beginning and I would have walked right out the door, but obviously they want to get the most money they can out of you. read more

I can't say enough good things about this garage. We went to them when we moved to the neighborhood about 12 years ago and just got lucky that it's one of the best garages. Our whole family drives used/older cars. The reason we can keep them going so long (one has 250,000 miles) is because of these guys. They're honest and will work with you. They're also gotten us out of more than one tight spot when our cars have broken down. If you're not satisfied with your mechanic or looking for one, we all highly recommend them. read more

One of the hardest things to do in life is to find a mechanic that you trust. I lucked out. Heck, my whole family lucked out. We found a family of mechanics in Downers Grove that are not only trustworthy, but stand behind their work. I will NEVER go to anyone else for car repairs. When I walk in the door, they know my name, my car and ask me about my family members BY NAME and their cars! Talk about personalized customer service!!! I recall going in there with a gas leak in my car. I started doing the math in my head of how much replacing the gas tank would be. They came out from the back in a few minutes and said that I was all set. I was very confused how they could have done this. They then told me that I didn't need a new tank at all, just a new gas screen filter thing that ran me a whopping $20! Most other places would have taken me for thousands, instead they have won my family over for as long as they are in service. I could go on and on about them, but I won't. Just trust me - trust them. They are always busy for a reason - they are the best! read more

I "discovered" these guys 4-5 years back. I'd grown tired of the Saturn dealership charging me $100 plus every year to "fix" the AC on my Saturn only to have to take it back the next spring for another $100 repair. J&C found the root problem, fixed it and it's been working fine ever since. They charged me a fraction of the Saturn garage. Since then my wife and I have gone back to J&C for all our repair jobs. All of the work has been solid and priced very reasonably. They are fair, fast and very nice to work with. I cannot recommend these guys highly enough on all counts....It's a joy to find an auto shop where I don't feel like I'm getting sold work I don't need and/or charged too much for the work I do need. read more

my headlight had been broken for a while, but i just hadn't had the time or money to fix it. finally i had both. checked out this place due to the great reviews. the place lived up to the great reviews, too. unfortunately i had to wait a week before they could fit me in, but that wasn't a big deal. i had already put off getting this fixed so what's another week?! finally when i was able to make it in, the guy at the counter was very nice. he remembered i had called last week and made an appointment. that's a good sign. he informed me that the guy who fixes headlights wasn't there yet, but he'd give me a call when the car was fixed. that wasn't a problem, since i definitely needed it done either way. since i didn't get an estimated time when the car would be finished, i figured i'd be waiting at least 2-3 hours (repair time + whenever the mechanic shows up). again, not a big deal. i had the whole day to off, so what do i care?! plus, i can't really go anywhere too far without my car. i got a phone call about an hour later informing me that my car was all set! nice! went to pick it up. over the phone i was quoted about $100 or depending on how long it took to fix the headlight. i paid $76, so not too bad. i was definitely happy it wasn't more than that! i'll be back to this place with any other car repairs i have! read more

I just bought a used car and wanted to get it inspected. My parents have been coming to J&C for more than 20 years and they recommended that I get these guys to look at it, even though I live in the City. While i waited for the inspection to be complete I overheard the GM Mike, on the phone dealing with customers and I could tell he was a very on the level, genuine guy. I felt good right there and then about the service I was getting. I don't want to put these guys out of business so won't tell you what they charged me for an hours worth of their time and my peace of mind - but let's just say, if you are looking for a place that will not rip you off and will give you great service - you have to check these guys out first. read more

Not one to write a review but felt that I had to warn others of this place. They literally will tell you to look up their reviews online as a way to get you to feel comfortable with them over charging you. First off its $65 for them to tell you what's wrong but that price is wiped away as long as you do all the work here.(don't worry they will not tell you this until you go and hear what is wrong with it) This is your typical mechanic that tells you every little thing is wrong and tries to get you to pay top dollar for their work. I brought in a car and was quoted nearly $1,000. I was than charged the $65 when I said that is pricey and I am going to look for a second opinion. "Thank god I did!". I ended up paying $600 for the fix and the alignment they told me that I needed was not even necessary.(Both mechanics I brought it too told me this). DO NOT BRING YOUR CAR TO THIS PLACE, go anywhere else and get a fair price. read more

I called on a Thursday and they weren't able to get me in until Monday, which was just fine since it wasn't an emergency. When they checked out my car, it was exactly what (my mechanic brother) said it would be. (He usually fixes my car but couldn't.). They could have easily ripped me off of for the more expensive fix but didn't. They quoted me, then apologized when I came in to tell me they had to spend a little more...$4 that is. The people who own and run this fine business are top notch, caring, and extremely conscientious. My car broke down on the interstate, and J&C came to pick us and the car up, took us to get lunch, and charged extremely reasonable rates for the excellent work they did fixing the car. Although it was a hitch in our travel plans, and a very long day at their business, they were very kind to all of us, including my dear dog. I took my car here when it started to make a noise in the front end passenger side. They replaced the sway bar link, but when I picked up my car, I noticed that the noise was still there. The owner, Joe, and I agreed to bring it back the next day (because I needed the car for the night) and he would come in early to drive me to the train. True to his word, he showed up 45 minutes before his shop opened and assured me that they would find and fix this mysterious "noise." They did repairs to the undercarriage steel plates that were loose and also tightened all of the bolts underneath. Mike found that my steering wheel column bolt was ready to fall off any minute. In fact, he said that it popped off in his hand - first time he's ever seen that happen. I think he probably saved my life! Needless to say, the noise has gone away and she drives like a dream! Because of their professionalism and dedication to see their customers happy, I will definitely be returning to J&C. I highly recommend them, and their pick up and drop off service from the train is one less headache to worry about, too! read more
