IMO, Lang's auto IS one of the very few honest and experienced auto repair shops left in business. The owner/manager Ray couldn't have been nicer, who is really customer service oriented. My wife's 2002 4Runner was having some noise with the steering. When she had the oil change at Firestone, the mechanic inspected it and quoted her for $1100 replacement of rack and pinion. After looking through the work order, i checked autozone website and found the part for $280(after 20% discount during promo period)vs $581.99 quoted by firestone (what a ripoff). When I shopped around, Ray quoted me $320ish, on par with what I found at autozone. When I took the car to Ray's shop and explained the situation to him, Ray, his mechanic and I looked under the hood together and found that someone had previously poked holes right under both boots to "show" that it was leaking to get wife to commit to the repair. For a 164,000 miles car, it's inevitable that there would be some fluid in the bellow. I knew the power steering fluid was low driving to the shop, Ray's mechanic rotated the boots and topped off the power steering fluid FREE OF CHARGE and assured me that it's safe to drive the car as it has happened to some of his other customers and just keep an eye on the fluid level during next oil change. He just forewent $800 worth of business for the sake of being honest. He could've just told me that it needs replacement. But he did not do that. He is an honest mechanic, man of integrity. I am mostly on yelp to review food, but I had to give these guys a good review because they are great. I took my old beater to Lang's and told them I was going trash it if the price was too high. They gave a me a bunch of options and different prices of what they could do to get it running again. I decided to junk it. But the point is that they didn't try and feed me some BS. The owner was very helpful, he helped me get rid of my car and kept it at the shop for a week while I figured out what to do. When I was buying a new car the owner spend a ton of time with me about what kind of car I should get. It is so hard to find service like Lang's, so if you are in Downers Grove and need your car fixed I would trust them over anyone else. I have been to Lang's three times for mechanical help with my Honda Hybrid with 200,000+ miles. They have been very helpful and creative. Both times the issue with the car were big ticket items. They were able to find creative solutions within my budget. I would give them 5 stars if it weren't for the rude question asked by the woman that I spoke with on the phone. I am from Chicago, and came out to Downer's Grove to look at a used car. After test diving it and kicking the tires, we decided that we were interested enough to pay a mechanic to inspect it for us. Uh oh, we don't know any mechanics in the area. Enter Yelp. These guys squeezed us in an hour before closing, and were very helpful and nice. Even though we probably would not be coming back (because we live an hour away in Chicago) they gave us advice about the repair costs it would need, the price the dealer probably paid, and some ideas about what to negotiate. Great place. I just went there for the first time to have my brakes done--not only were they completely honest about what needed to be done (they were willing to do just brake pads and not rotars if need be, which is hard to find at any auto service place), but they also fixed a few other problems with my car for no charge. They were able to get me in and out fast and were incredibly accomodating. After a few more great experiences like ths, I'll up my rating to 5 stars. I was extremely fortunate enough to take my car to this shop. I found out about their service here on Yelp. The customer service was great, friendly, and courteous. A little story: unfortunately, I found out I didnt have enough in my cheking account to cover the payment. I explained it to them and they decided its okay to take the check. I'm not saying to do this to the shop, but I really have no other choice. They were kind enough to accept the check until they can process and cash it out. I felt really bad but what can I do, but they said its okay. This is my first time to take my car there and I do actually look forward to take my car there again. I recently took my car back to Lang's for the 60K mile checkup. I was quoted a price that was very reasonable. I had asked them to also check my brakes and look at a spot on my hood that was discolored from water that had dripped on it. They did the checkup, asked me if they could change my anti-freeze, checked my brakes, and also buffed out the spot on my hood all UNDER THE PRICE THEY QUOTED ME for just the 60K checkup!!! Despite not having an appointment, they worked to fit me into their schedule and got the inspection done expeditiously. Ray took the time to carefully explain their findings and even pulled up a video on YouTube to help clarify something I was confused about. They also looked up the warranty information on my vehicle to determine whether or not a certain repair would be covered and offered a free inspection after the warranty work was completed to make sure everything was in order.
