I was looking for a quick indian food to go spot. Found this place on my way back downtown, however it is a Sri Lankan eatery. The restaurant is inside a convenience store which is great in case you want a roadie. I ordered the curry veg and some roti off the managers recommendation. Curry veg came with lentils, squash, an onion concoction with rice in the middle. The vegs were tasty and the rice was done right. I ordered, coconut and veg roti along with a onion roll on the side. Of tge two roti, I liked the veg the best. There's a chili paste that came with the coconut roti that was spicy. I liked this place. The manager was very nice and the food was tasty. This place is somehow a liquor store, sri lankan restaurant, and a mexican restaurant all rolled into one. But on the food, they're not making like fusion dishes with the two. You can get one or the other. I got a fish kotthu roti and it wasn't bad. I don't think there's like a ton of diff places to get this dish so this isn't a bad representation of it. We tried the lump rice and pork curry. Food in here is really good. Very tasty and has strong flavor of spices. It is more similar to Indonesian food than to Indian food. Portion is really big. 1 meal can fit 2 hungry people. One thing that the shop can improve is the serving area. It was located inside the grocery shop that is already packed. The food is so authentic. Although I am black, I use to eat chicken and veggie kottu in LA all the time. I really enjoy it so much. It was so hard finding Sri Lanka restaurant in this area. It is so good and will not disappoint at all. I was a little timid with the location, but if you can get beyond that it was worth it. The guy who helped us order the food was super nice as well. So I'd driven past this place for years not knowing what the hell it was. The store's concept proposes an odd bit of syncretism, for sure. The name always intrigued me, because I've actually lived in Sri Lanka and feel H-Town could definitely use some proper Lanka cuisine--having the choice of all of the Indian curry joints here in town is great, don't get me wrong... but Lanka fare has a decidedly different bent to it. Finally stopped in here this Sunday... had an order of kingfish curry and an order of veggie fried rice. The service was a little chaotic--the one clerk was fielding a takeout order over the phone, and taking forever doing it... yikes. Once, I finally got my order in, I opted to eat in... and quickly rethought my strategy. It's a little, hole-in-the-wall mini-market--one which, beyond Lanka-bred townsfolk, tends to attract an unconventional clientele of stragglers out from the street... not a place for a date night, for sure. I sidled up to the counter and asked to have my order to go--"no problem-o." Once the food was finally ready, I actually did sit down on one of the tables and started to tear into it, as I was starved... figured I'd chow down enough to take the edge off and finish the rest at home. Verdict: the veggie fried rice was kinda bland, although the portion size was huge. The kingfish curry, though, was very tasty indeed. It was rich, with big chunks of very meaty fish--success!! My advice (which I'll follow next time I'm here)... skip on the rice dishes, make your own rice at home, and pick up a selection of two different curries instead... more cost effective, and dovetails with the fact that this place is really about take-out action anyway. Also, if they could have some bottles of ice-cold Lion Stout on hand, that in itself would be a big improvement... one can dream. read more

A food truck with Sri Lankan street food! Houston, you've definitely made your mark as a world class foodie town. Conveniently parked by Westheimer, this food truck is brand new. So it'll take a little time for them to settle in. I recommend taking out to go. But you can eat there too as they have a couple of tables outside. The portions are huge and they'll make it to suit your tolerance for spicy food. (But this food taste better spicy) The food is great. Hot Kottu Roti is great with an ice cold beer. (No they don't serve beer there) Have tasted the string hoppers with coconut sambal was pretty good. The lamb fried rice is a hit. Awesome array of pastries too. Don't get confused by the name... its not a fusion place, more like two separate menus (mexican and sri lankan) and sometimes even different cooks for the two menus . This review is for the Sri Lankan food and it was great. The Kotthu and the String Hoppers both were pretty awesome. Flavor full, freshly made and just the right amount of spice. Huge portions. Service was great too. We called ahead of time (since we had a large group) and they had everything ready to go when we arrive. And the guys on service were extremely polite and friendly. I'm Sri Lankan and can say that this place has legit Sri Lankan food. They have all the essential dishes and make it just like it's done back home. I've ordered out multiple times (they have some limited seating inside) and have always enjoyed the food. My favorites are the string hoppers, rolls, and kottu (spicy). Absolutely hit this spot for Sri Lankan food. After 3PM or so, you can get hoppers as well. Great spice level. Coconut sambol with string hoppers and curry is subtle and refreshing. Awesome Sri Lankan food We got Chinese rolls (Nostalgia!) fish buns, string hoppers with curry and sambol. The chinese rolls were awesome (Tough to make at home so this is god given).
