Another one of the first places I went to in Omaha. They opened in 1996. I had just moved here and I read a review in the Reader. I immediately went down. This is a small restaurant in the back of the Thai Grocery. It is located directly across the street from South High School. Street parking is usually your best bet although there is a little parking lot in the back. I don't usually park back there--I tried to once and there was a woman passed out lying against the building--kind of freaked me out. What I love about this place is that you can go in, watch Brenda, Darunee or Lucky cook your meal, watch them sit at a table and pull basil leaves. It's just great. I love their Drunk Noodles, spring rolls and Tom Kai Gai. They are all fabulous. They have good currys, beef salad, and I love the mango with sweet rice (although they don't always have it--i guess they have to have a good mango!) This is the same group that opened Thai Spice in 1997 and a second Thai Kitchen out west recently. Their cooking classes are also great. You sit in a "U" while they cook for you. The recipes are often cryptic. People are begging for exact amounts and Lucky may say, just add it till it tastes right. THey will teach whatever the group wants to learn, which is great because then you can purchase the ingredients there and cook yourself at home. You have to ask but they do have kaffir lime leaves for purchase. We regularly make the Tom Kai Gai, curries, and the spring rolls. We are really lucky to have such a place in Omaha. read more

I havent been here in a good number of years (due to moving away, not because I dont like it!!!) and was so happy the ladies in the kitchens are the same ones! No better place for Thai food in Omaha. Parking limited but that is truly the only downside to this south Omaha gem. Hidden between a million amazing taco shops and across the street from south high is this little hole in the wall. Bring cash and prepare to have you taste buds blown away. I've eaten here several times and haven't ever been disappointed. The typical pad Thai is savory and leaves you asking for a drink at a level 6. You've been warned. Spring rolls are quickly hand made and go amazing with the provided dipping sauces. My favorite part to this place is definitely the personalities of the staff. You feel like you've been invited into Someone's home and seated at their kitchen table. And how can I forget the make yourself peanut sauce. We started with some fresh spring rolls (in lieu of fried) then lo and behold... free fried spring rolls! One comes with each meal, apparently. I've never met a fresh spring roll I didn't like, so obviously those were good. And the fried ones were nice crispy/flaky and as light as anything fried can be under the circumstances. Of course I had to try their Thai iced tea, which they served in a nice big hurricane glass. For $2, the price was pretty typical, but the tea was several notches above average. We took our time ordering, but I settled on chicken pad Thai (my Thai-food measuring stick) and I was very pleased with the result. Two kinds of noodles, identifiable vegetables, plenty of meat and plenty of sauce. Though, I did end up adding more chili garlic and sweet sauces, which are brought out to each table in ketsup and mustard bottles. And I was so distracted I totally forgot about trying the other condiments supplied - traditionally - in the condiment caddy before it was whisked away to another table. Bottom line is that I need to go back soon to solidify my rating. I teetered on the border of five stars because it's so classically a family run restaurant and the food was really good, but even though it might be the best Thai food in town, I'm not positive of that yet. We wanted some Thai food while in Omaha so we stopped by here since it had good reviews. This place is located facing the street so you'll have to park on the street or near the back of the building and then walk around to get to the restaurant. This place is cash only and there is an ATM inside. Prices are a bit high and it took awhile for the food to come out since there was only one cook in the back (open kitchen). The portion size of my drunken noodles was very small. I could have finished 2 of them but that would have cost me about $25. Flavor was good and there was plenty of beef. I just wished there was more. Red curry had alot of bamboo shoots and was average. Overall it was ok. Nothing amazing but the prices and wait time wasn't very enjoyable. read more

This is the hidden GEM!!!! I love this place. A must stop in family run business. the food has always been prepared perfectly. I was the only 'gaijin' in Laos Thai when I ate here; everyone else was Thai. Real Thai people speaking Thai - not 2nd generation Thai. Always a good sign. The waitress speaks English well. I enjoyed a Thai iced tea and the crispy vegetable spring rolls and pad thai. (OK, I know that's totally cliché meal to order, but did I mention I'm a gaijin?). ; ) Laos Thai prepared the spice level of the meal to my liking and serves really fresh-cut lime wedges. The owner here was great and the Thai food surprisingly good for Nebraska. Menu is a bit hard to read as the prices seem to change often. But our party for the pad Thai, Tom yom soup, and red Curry with chicken. The red curry was heavy on the veggies but had a great flavor with a good note of coconut. The pad Thai was the star or the table. It leaned slightly sour (as did the Tom yom soup)compared to most pad Thai I had, but it def hot the spot. Probably sizes were also good. Finally we finished with the mango and sweet rice, omg this was to die for. Super soft mango, perfectly sticky and lightly sweetened rice with coconut milk. Definitely a find in Omaha. read more

Went here on a Friday evening, and surprisingly had the whole place to ourselves. Our server took about 5 minutes to get to us which was strange since she saw us walk in. She ended up being very nice though. I won't beat around the bush here. The food is really good but in my opinion, overpriced. We got steamed dumplings with shrimp for an appetizer. There were 6 small ones and they were pretty good, but 8 dollars. I had a chicken noodle dish which was very tasty, but to be honest I could have eaten 2 of them, and I'm not a large person. It was like 12$. My dining companion got a yellow curry chicken, that I tried and liked. You can differenciate the coconut milk from the ginger. Oh man, why didn't I try this place years ago? It will take a few more visits to be sure, but I'm pretty sure it just got added to our short list of favorite Thai restaurants in Omaha (the other two being Bangkok Cuisine and Thai Spice). It's a real hole in the wall with zero ambiance but the food was excellent! We got one cup of the Tom Yum Gai and one of the tofu soup, which were both light and flavorful. Since I'm picky about Pad Thai, we stuck with brown sauces to be on the safe side and got Shrimp Rad Nar and Chicken Drunk Noodles. Both came out attractively presented and bursting with fresh, crisp veggies. I was also impressed by the huge, juicy shrimp in the rad nar. The service was friendly but a little slow. This is my favorite Thai Resturant in Omaha. The food is authentic. The woman who owns the place cooks everything to order. This means that everyone at your table might not get their food at the same time but its definately worth the wait. The restaurant is in an old converted grocery store. First of all: CASH ONLY! I give the food a 5 star. I got the green curry with medium spice and a Thai iced tea for the meal and for dessert I tried my coworker's coconut ice cream. We also got the spring rolls and fish cakes for appetizers. The spring rolls were pretty standard and I didn't see any significant difference between those and other good spring rolls at other Thai restaurants I have been to. But the restaurant has a variety of homemade sauces. The owner was very disciplined to remind us that she made the sauces herself and that they are very good. They were very good indeed! The sauces had a very balanced flavor and I was tempted to pour it over everything. The curry was not tremendously spicy and was very flavorful. The Thai iced tea was also delicious. The coconut ice cream was very tasty. It had plum seeds on it which was very unique. They have a unique flavor and texture but with the ice cream it was very nice. Despite the fact that it's called coconut ice cream there is not an outspoken coconut flavor. It had a nutty flavor as well probably due to the almond pieces. Overall I loved the meal and I would love to revisit if I were ever in Omaha again. When we were there, there were only two women who worked there; one in the kitchen and the owner running the restaurant. Laos Thai Market started about 16 years ago as an Asian market with a small restaurant attached. Today, it's a successful restaurant with a very down home feel. As other Yelp reviewers have remarked, when you step into the restaurant you feel like you've stepped into your Thai grandmother's kitchen. The staff is talking on the phone; Thai TV is on the tube; and the grandmother is chatting with friends at a nearby table while eating her bowl of rice noodle soup. Your stomach is already thanking you for the good things to come. Before I get to the review, a quick comment about the location. As you drive from the north down South 24th Street, you can't help but wonder wether you're in the right place. The area is heavily Hispanic, with lots of restaurantes and tiendas clearly catering to a Hispanic customer base. The area has a very urban feel to it, which in my opinion only adds to the character. There is a Catholic church and elementary school right across the street. OK, now for the food. My wife and I started with the fresh spring roll and fish cakes. The spring roll was OK; we could have used a little more cilantro and bean sprouts for a fuller flavor and texture profile. (For those in Kansas City, the spring rolls at Saigon 39 set the standard.) The fish cakes were great. My wife ordered the Poor Man's Noodles and I had the Drunken Noodles. The Poor Man's Noodles were really good, so good in fact that we switched dishes a third of the way through. (I like sweet foods and so LOVED the Poor Man's Noodles.) The Drunken Noodles (Phad See Eaw to fans of Thai food) were OK, but we've had better at The Thai Place in Kansas City. There were many more dishes on the menu we would have liked to try. Pretty decent foodstuffs. We went with a large group and there was a slight delay in production of the dishes. That is to be understood. the 2 gracious ladies that were cooking and waiting on us were so patient and we should have been more understanding. The overall wait was understandable for our group size and there is nothing wrong because it was good. The yellow curry was my favorite and the Panang was pretty great too. The star of the meal was the Spring rolls that were far less sticky than many others I have had. The tofu was good (I wish there was more) and the overall flavor was genuine. My only gripe is the lack of labeling on the spices in the four pack dispenser. the chili oil tasted of fish and there was no warning that it contained fish oil. allergens beware. We had just finished a trip to the zoo and were famished from all that walking so we Yelped for nearby restaurants and found this place. The reviews were good, so we thought "Why not?" How I wish I could turn back time and not gone here. Why you ask? Read on. We walked in and there were only 2 other tables which indicated to me "They're not busy so you'll get things fast". Boy, was I wrong. Unfortunately for them, there were only 2 staff members. One lady taking orders (and making misc. food/drinks) and then one lady cooking the entrees. Side Note: They were REALLY nice and I was trying to be patient, but when you're hungry and you have a hungry 2 and 4 year old, it's not easy. So in general...water was served immediately then we waited 15 minutes before our orders were taken, then 10 minutes later the appetizer was served, then 25-30 minutes after that the food came in. You know in those movies where things are so slow that you can count the seconds ticking? This TOTALLY felt like that! The other major downside for me was the value. I don't mind paying $10-$12 dollars for a Thai dish, but to pay $10-$12 dollars and get a lunch sized portion...nuh uh girlfriend! Mai Thai which is a lot nicer, in a better location, and has tastier dishes charges the exact same except there's at least 150% more food what you pay. Makes no sense. So in summary: 1.5 Stars for Service- She tried, but it was still really slow. 3 Stars for Taste- Average, not amazing. 1 Star for Value- You're better off buying a frozen microwave Thai dish. I've eaten here many of times and have never had a bad meal. The ladies working are always super nice and helpful. If you have a question about anything, just ask. The green papaya salad is amazing. Spicy but not too spicy, just enough to make you want to keep eating bite after bite. I've tried several different entrees but my favorite is #35 the Nuay Teay Nuea Sahb (Noodles in Ground Beef Gravy). I have no idea how to describe the taste of it but it's amazing. The last visit here, I had the Sweet Rice Coconut Milk with Thai Custard. She had just made the custard that day and even though I was super full, I seriously thought about ordering another one to eat. This is definitely our favorite Thai place in town. read more

Thai domination. This place is excellent. A little out of the way (off 24th & L) in a part of town that you typically go to for Mexican food goodness, but great nonetheless. Located in a strip mall and sort of "hides in plain sight". Look close for the Thai signage. I had the Pad Thai, which was served up in a large portion with peanuts and various greenery for $7.99. You can choose the heat (levels 1-10), I had 3 and would consider it very mild. Will probably up it to 5 or 6 next time. Also came with a crispy spring roll. Served very quickly to-go. Would be easy to come here on a 30 minute lunch and make it back to work on time, if you're in the area. CASH ONLY. Luckily, I had enough to cover it, otherwise would have been embarrassed. Laos Thai Market has a ton of stuff going for it. First, its an in exciting and interesting environment, its own ambiance matching the environment. The prices were fantastic and the food was equally as good. I had the fresh spring rolls which are a match to Osha in San Francisco. That is saying a lot imho. I had the Beef Ball noodle soup which was really tasty and comparable to Pho. They gave me a lot of different spice options and choices. The one drawback is probably their times, only being open till 730 and my conference going to 630 means I can't eat there again tonight. read more

I may revise my review to a five after a few more visits, but I was very happy with my dinner there today. The spring rolls were fresh and delicious, served with homemade sweet chili sauce. I had one of the special Thai dishes listed on the last page of the menu (I can't remember the exact name-something about clear noodles, but it was #60 I believe), which was yummy. A bit different than most of the Thai food I've had, this dish was interesting with it's tiny clear noodles. To drink I got a Thai coffee, which I haven't seen before. It was just as good as Thai iced tea, and I enjoyed trying something different. When she asked how spicy I wanted my dinner, I said 7, and that I like my nose to run a bit when I'm eating Thai food. It wasn't nearly as spicy as this rating is at most other restaurants, so I added quite a bit of the condiments provided at the table (I recommend the one with the chunks of green and red chilis floating in it if you like spice). Great Thai food! Ambiance is nothing to write home about but for me, yelp is all about food. Pad Thai ($9.99 and enough for 2) was fresh and perfectly spicy (we asked for 5 out of 10 spice level). The key to a tasty dish for average restaurants is ingredients. That is doubly true for ethnical food. Here lies the problem. Curry paste is an integral product. The only way you can tune spiciometer on demand for a curry dish is to add artificial additives. It is a shrewd business move but you did not get the authentic experience. Let me start off by saying, thank you! To the owner and super friendly lady who let us sit down to eat 10 minuets before they closed. You spared us from fast food!! This place is a really eclectic place. It basically looks like you sat down for dinner at your Thai friends house. Little knick-knacks are stacked on the shelf along the wall, paintings and posters line some walls, and the waitress is quite motherly too. She was super nice and even gave us some spring rolls.... on the house. (I'm guessing cause she was closing up for the day, and we were the last ones in) We all split a few dishes, since I must admit the place is a little pricey for Thai food. We had the green curry, drunken noodled, and thom yum soup to start. The thom yum was delicious. Dropped in a few slivers of thai chili peppers and it really took it to the next level. The broth was perfect and the tofu was nice and firm. The Drunken noodles were nicely stir fried, crunchy veggies. Well seasoned. Our favorite dish was the green curry. The sauce was perfect! A little more lemongrass-y then most curries I've had but thats what made this most likely the best green curry I have ever had. No matter, no fuss. Ordered Tohm Kai Gai, Pad Thai, and Thai Tea to go. After arriving, got takeout and paid - cash only. Few diners in place were still inside, the owners/staff made no attempt to close them out or push them at closing time. Friendly and good staff. Onto the food. Tohm Kai Gai - soup was decent, but I expected more after I (was spoiled) ate at Salween. Tasted a bit more stale than Salween's, but I guess that could be in part to the later arrival? I don't know, but I expected more spice and flavor. They give you a generous serving of sticky rice to go with it. Pad Thai - great! I'd say this combo Pad Thai is slightly better than Salween's, due in part to amount of meat in dish. Right proportions, right flavors. I wasn't shorted on meat here. Thai Tea - nothing special, flavors were great. Tasted a bit of something (either ginger or cinnamon), and as always, was really sweet (probably due to evaporated milk or sugar content). Overall, was $29 for those items. A bit more pricey than Salween, but more meat in Pad Thai is always good! Restaurant itself is hole-in-the-wall, seats maybe 25 total. I went here for dinner last night with a friend. I had the Pad Thai with chicken and she had Drunken Noodles with Tofu. Both dishes were very good. We also had Papaya Salad, Spring Rolls, and Sweet Rice with Mango. We loved all of it! As requested, the server/owner/cook made sure that my friend's dishes did not have fish sauce since she is a vegetarian. Food - amazingly tasty Service - right on! This place is great for some authentic Thai/Laos food. Taste just like a place that we used to have in the Siouxland area. Me and a group of friends were very hungry after coming from the zoo. (Also lived out of town and had a group of 7 people) Everything tasted fabulous. But we just had a couple of problems. One.. is a bit over priced on the appetizers. Me and my boyfriend had ordered... the curry, pepper steak, another curry, satay chicken, fresh spring rolls and papaya salad. Along with a soda and Thai iced tea. It all came to $72. It was like $10 per appetizers and the portions weren't that big. Three spring rolls (not that big) cut in half giving us 6 pieces, then also 5 skewers of the chicken satay and the papaya salad was like a one person portion. Also would have wished everyone had received their food at once. But due to only one cook. It was understandable. I'm always about supporting small businesses. Came here because of the awesome reviews on yelp; however, we left extremely disappointed and hungry afterward. We came at dinner time around 7pm. There were 6 customers in the store including us. We waited for 10 minutes until our water. There were two ladies who were cooking, cleaning, waitressing and arguing with someone about paying bills. Finally got the waitress attention for the menu and two straws. After another 15 minutes we finally ordered our foods. While we were waiting for our foods, the two ladies in the store kept on arguing with some other customers about money (yes loudly enough that everyone in the could hear them). Our foods finally arrived 25 minutes later and the portion was ridiculously small for the price. We order beef fried noodle and five spices duck noodle and the bill was $27 not including tips. The foods were heavily seasoned with fish sauce and MSG. The owner did not even once check up on us during our meal. Lastly, the store did not even credit card and there was no restroom. I would highly recommend everyone to stay away from this restaurant because there are so many other wonderful Thai restaurants in town. read more

After being disappointed to find Mother India closed on Mondays, we turned to Thai Kitchen (AKA Laos Thai Market)...to find it closed at 6 pm. However, we were in luck because the lovely women working there let us in, told us to walk down the street to the Wells Fargo to get cash, and come back and they would cook for us because they were still there, so why not. The food was great! My husband said the Pad Thai was the best he has ever had. I had the yellow curry which was also wonderful, though I'm not sure they believed me when I said I liked my food spicy as it could have had much more of a punch.
