Two words - Ice Cream. We have had Lappert's before on Oahu at the Hilton in Waikiki. We fell in love. The ice cream here is so good - and really infused with local flavors. I've definitely had a bunch of their other flavors before but I tried Kauai Pie and Kona Lava Java this time around. I opted for the Kona Lava Java because it had everything that I wanted - Kona coffee and chocolate! Staff was friendly and helpful when we wanted to try a bunch of flavors. I initially went to Hanapepe location to try Lappert's but it was closed due to Labor Day, so I was very holy to have found this location much closer to where we were staying in Poipu and they are open on holidays and longer hours. The line is long but moves quickly. They have 20+ flavors to choose from and let you sample. I tried salted caramel banana, white chocolate Mac nut, caramel coconut Mac nut and pineapple coconut. The best one was white chocolate mac nut. They use whole macadamia nuts and good chunks of chocolate pieces. Is $4+ a scoop expensive?? Not really in Hawaii and I see they don't skimp on the ingredients they use. I just didn't see or taste a wow factor in their ice cream. read more

I feel like I keep getting crushed by Lappert's. I've had it in San Diego but just the Dole Whip. It was too long ago to remember. We just had it in Maui a couple of months ago and it wasn't impressive. I thought Kauai would finally blow my mind but it fell short for me. Roasted Hazelnut with Sea Salt - This flavor was almost gone so I knew I had to try it. It was a solid flavor. Kona Lava Java - Strong coffee flavor but if you like coffee, it's a good one. Kaua'i Pie - My husband loves this one. It has a great mixture of stuff in the ice cream so it was fine. The flavors at Lappert's are great. They are unique and definitely have that Hawaii vibe going on. My issue with the ice cream is that they are icy! Icy ice cream is not my jam. I want creamy! So I'm sad to say it but Lappert's, you have failed me again. I've given up and am throwing in the towel. read more

The one star is primarily for the poor service. We used to walk to Lappert's every morning for coffee when we would come for 2 weeks and it was one of our favorite places to go while on Kauai. This is no longer the case. We didn't go for coffee this trip because their hours have changed, but we did stop in for a smoothie and our absolute favorite pastry. The smoothies were okay, but the pastry that we used to drool over was old and dry. I understand that everyone can have an off day and maybe that is what happened with the staff that day. I won't be going back to find out because I won't go back to a business where I'm treated very rudely. There are too many other places to spend my money where the staff is friendly. The kauai pie Ice cream is delicious. It's super rich, sweet and oozing with flavor. My favorite. However the flamboyant tall male local employee with earrings is always such a jerk. I'm eating my ice cream in the store and he has the nerve to tell me to pull up my mask. Like really Liberace? I'm eating my ice cream. There's been other snide remarks on other occasions. Like when I asked if I need to stand in line to but a cookie, he tells me, "you gotta wait in line like everybody else." I have frequented this spot for years and years, since before they moved to the new location. They have an employee named Tia that was beyond rude and obviously doesn't want to work. We had a customer ahead of us which had a waffle cup, we asked for a waffle cup and her response was " We don't have those in the rudest tone ever, When we pointed out that the customer ahead and of us had it, She repeated I told you we don't have that. Employees are "drinking out if a fire hose" with an onslaught of continual ice cream, sundae, shake and smoothie requests. They appear kind yet unflappable. Thank goodness I waited until my last night to try the infamous Lappert's or I would have insisted on stopping here every single night after dinner. We almost skipped it because the line was super long and we'd already eaten dessert (how I love vacation), but decided to see if it was worth waiting for. And it was definitely worth waiting for! We didn't even have to wait long because Lappert's is well accustomed to a long lines and keeps them moving quickly. I had a scoop of Kauai Pie (thank you yelpers for the recommendation) and another caramel flavored ice cream recommended by the ice cream scooper. The caramel was good, but I would have preferred 2 (or 8) scoops of the Kauai Pie. My husband loved the pineapple ice cream he paired with the Kauai Pie. And we really splurged by getting it in their waffle cones that we couldn't resist after smelling while waiting in line. read more

Very rude and racist staff. We were inside the store and they turned our two 5-year old kids away and refused to give them ice cream saying that they need to close for a break. If they need to close they should shut the doors. Letting kids walk in turn them away, that too on Christmas Eve was very rude. Wow! Lappert's ice cream has distinct flavors and texture! On our visit we tried white chocolate macadamia, kauai pie, coffee, and nene tracks (all in waffle cones/bowl). Hot tip: always do ice cream with family so you get to try multiple flavors. Lappert's ice cream is seriously creamy - I think it is the creamiest ice cream I've ever had in my life (and I am a fan of ice cream). Their ice cream is probably also the least sweet ice cream I've ever had, at least across multiple flavors. This really lets the bits of coconut, macadamia, and other goodies shine. The waffle cones/bowls are also among the best waffle ice cream accoutrement I have ever had. It's a shame for a mainlander like me that they only sell on Hawaii - guess I'll just have to keep dropping in over the next week! read more

We really liked the ice cream here. We came twice and were pleased both visits. The first time was after we finished a complete dinner next door and we were so impressed, that we had to make a second trip before we left the island. As stated by previous reviewers, the Lappert's on the mainland is not associated with the Lappert's in Hawaii lending to flavors that are handmade in Kauai and that you will only find in Hawaii. There's about 20 ice cream flavors with also a handful of sorbet flavors and gelato flavors. We did not try any, but Lappert's also serves coffee, tea, chillers, sundaes, shakes, and an asssortment of baked goods. The base of the ice cream was rich and creamy with many of the flavors including local ingredients such as: coconut, macadamia nut, and Kona coffee. My recommendation is to go for those flavors you can't get on the mainland. Each one I tried was delicious with the Kaua'i Pie being my favorite Prices are elevated as expected with a single scoop being $4.25 and a double being $6.25, tacking on another $1.10 for a waffle cone. Service was friendly and liberal with samples. There's plenty of seating outside or you can take your treat with you as stroll through the Shops at Kukuiula. read more

I also put a splash of coffee in my ice cream to make an affogato. As for the ice cream, I tried the white chocolate macadamia and Kauai pie. The Kauai pie is a definite. It has coffee, coconut, macadamia nuts, and chocolate chunks.. definitely recommend this one. The white chocolate macadamia was also really good. I didn't realize there would be pieces of white chocolate in the ice, which was a nice surprise. They're open earlier than some of the places around so it's great for an early breakfast. read more
