If I could give them a thousand stars, I would. They are not in business anymore, but, I'm going to give them a review anyhow just to say thank you for everything they did for me, and my family, based on my father's recommendations...for so many years It breaks my heart to see this and it hurts so much there's not enough words to describe the feeling. I could not in good conscience allow this beloved business to depart without acknowledging my gratitude. I moved here at age seven back in 1984. My father learned about Larry & Dan's from customers soon after we moved. Since then, until his untimely passing two years ago, he has only taken his vehicle to Larry & Dan's, and refused to go anywhere else. The quality of the work, the dependability, the honesty, and kindness from the mechanics were all the reasons we kept going. I cannot begin to express how many difficult situations over the years I've had with vehicles that Larry & Dan's mechanics not only went out of their way to take care of me, but at times did so free of cost. A simple eyeball inspection at times, to a recent occasion where I hit a curb and screwed up the front passenger's side bumper, that a mechanic put zip ties on it to secure it - for free. The cashier ladies over the years knew more about cars sometimes than the mechanics. They'd take down descriptions and pass it through the window like a chef reading off a recipe. They made good conversation in the always stressful experience it is going to have a car fixed. They put you at ease. Over the years the mechanics went out of their way, too, to find affordable solutions for customers going through difficult financial times. Their mechanics would pick up parts. They would research and find good quality used parts and devise a strategy to go and pick it up, then reduce labor cost on the bill. Recent experiences of mine involving a battery alternator, and four brakes that went out at the same time, resulted this way. Thank you for all your years of service. Even if no one reads this, God will read it, and the universe will come around and reward those who did so much, for so long, for Schaumburg. I'm sure I'm not the only one who passes by this location, sees it empty, and experiences that hit to the chest that's comparable to losing a family member. I lost my dad. This is almost like losing him all over again. His name was Robert and EVERYONE at the shop loved him. He taught three mechanics how to play guitar. They drove him home one time on their own accord. Years ago when I worked the overnight shift at Dominick's on Schaumburg and Roselle, I would forget to turn off my lights and in the morning find it dead. I can't tell you how many times the mechanics would come to my aid and they always jumped me free of cost. They installed the best quality tires. They took on hundred-fifty-dollar jobs that chain auto shops would try and manipulate a customer into thousand-fifty dollar jobs. They'd do jobs under a hundred dollars, knowing that the big job when we need it would come their way. The picture in the middle was always mounted on the bulletin board behind where the cashier sits. It told the story of how the business was put together. It emphasized their business strategy, their devotion to customers, and to making an auto repair shop more a place of ease, a place to be relied on, a place people always knew had their best interests at heart. They put the customer first every day of their existence. With a tear in my eye, and a pounding in my heart, I'm writing this with utmost sincerity to say thank-you and best wishes, good spirits, and blessings from above...to this amazing business. read more

I had to change my review from 5 to 1 star on google. I've been coming here for 7 plus years and loved how honest and good they were. When j heard rumors they were doing downhill I ignored it because I didn't have any issues with them till today. I called to get my oil change and was told to come today after 5pm for their special deal. I asked to make an appointment and was told no. I got there and they worked on it, but while waiting I asked how much will it be and the front lady who stated she is new didn't know the price depending on the oil. I thought it was weird as my last oil change was 43 dollars after I just checked. When the kid comes out to talk to me he states there is a leak and stops talking. I said yeah and? And he stated he is not a mechanic and doesn't know where it is coming from or what to do but to have me come back when their mechanic is in. I thought that was even weirder. THEN they are charging me 75 dollars for and OIL change. I asked them to pull up my previous tickets and she looked for 2 seconds and said she cannot find it. I had her call her manager and she said that's the price. I called midas and they are charging 40. They blamed the cost of oil. I literally said if I knew this was their special price id have just done it today on my day off myself. The front end girl and the non mechanic need to be trained better and should not state idk I'm not a mechanic while you are working on my car. Idk what happened but this place went to hell. And to clarify my car uses a synthetic(don't know if I spelled it correctly) blend which is the cheaper kind. We will be no longer recommending this place and going to another mechanic who is an actual mechanic. Used to be great, then I believe ownership changed hands. Brought my car in with two problems. They had me buy my own part for one of them, theoretically to save me money (they had done this years ago and I appreciated it), "fixed" the other problem for over $500 except it didn't fix anything. Spent $800 more to have the new part put in (that they were very confused about for some reason) and to actually fix the original problem, because they clearly didn't test drive the car before or after and were just guessing. Well, got one thing fixed, but the new part they put in didn't correct the other problem, engine light came right back on. I'm not giving them any more money, will have to find a new place to go. read more

I took my car to this place due to the good reviews I saw online, and I wanted to hear about a different perspective since I have always taken my car to the same place with little car knowledge. I had my power steering pump replaced about a month and a half ago. Everything seemed fine for about two weeks, but then my steering started stuttering and was making squeaky noises. I took my car to my usual mechanic again, because ONE: they failed to communicate to me that they didn't even have the proper tools to align the steering wheel so I had to drive with a bad wheel for a few days. TWO: I heard a few times from them that they only had like 1-2 mechanics and that they would often call off.. of course I felt skeptical to come back... My usual AAA mechanic found that the fluid had become aerated and the o-ring was split, which pointed to an improper installation. They had to flush the system and fix the problem to prevent further damage. When I called this place again, the first two men were nice and tried to reassure me they were going to relay the message to their boss, but nothing got back to me so I called a third time on the 3rd day. The woman that answered kept cutting me off instead of trying to listen first, and was questioning me why I even took it to their shop, if I already had a mechanic, victim blaming me instead of wondering what their own mechanic did. I'm sorry I wanted to give this place a shot instead of my usual! I guess you don't want to gain new customers. For now I am waiting for their boss to get back to me, if they ever do. They keep saying they will tell their boss but nothing has happened so far. read more

We can not say enough about Larry & Dan's amazing service and repairs. Our family owned heating & air company have relied on their great honest service since 1991. With our personal vehicles as well as our 5 work vehicles we greatly depend on them. In this day and age with car dealerships suggesting a large list of things that should be done, I would suggest letting them look at the list and giving you a real honest opinion. I've been going to Larry and Dan's marathon for about 10 years and have been nothing but happy with the service that I've received here. I don't know if they sold the business or just no longer care because it has gone completely downhill the last year or two. My father in law and husband both got oil changes and noticed issues right away. They opened the hood and realized the technician failed to put the oil cap back on the engine after completing the oil change. My brother in law took his car in twice. First time they messed up the brake job. Second time they replaced a spark incorrectly which blew an engine coil. He ended up just getting a new car and no longer brings his cars here. I just picked up my car from getting oil change. I specifically told the woman at the counter I wasn't picking it up until tonight or even over the weekend and I get a nearly $100 bill for a simple oil change because I brought it in before 5pm. For all I know they could've done the oil change after 5pm but since I dropped it off prior I am charged more. I will no longer be bringing my vehicles here for service. Neither will any of my family or friends. I hope they get it together as I have heard negative feedback from other longtime customers that are considering no longer bringing their vehicles here for service. read more

A large piece of plastic fell from the bottom of my car fell off and was dragging. I pulled into Larry and Dan's and Marty stopped what he was doing to help me. I was so appreciative of their help and kindness. Had this not been repaired, it could have come off and damaged somebody else's car in addition to possible extreme damage to my car. I've gotten oil changes and brakes done only. Their labor is 20/hr. I paid $25 for an oil change (I bought and brought my own oil + filter) as well as a cabin air filter. Get on their good sides, my family been going there for years. They're all nice and like to talk to you. Take the time to get to know who's working on your car. They have an after 5pm special for oil changes. Idk specifically what is is but it's obviously cheaper at that time. I was in a jam, my license plate screws stripped out. Pulled in expecting to wait a while to get this taken care of. Owner said to pull in and the mechanic will look at it right away. Rubin had it done in 20 minutes. Give me a super fair price. WOW, what great customer service. I'm floored, must shops would blow you off, overcharge or screw you over. These guys are awesome! Very impressed with this place. My parent's have been going for years for their car repairs and now they have moved in with me. So we go back to get stuff done because we trust them. My parents are older now (80 years old) and these guys have always been super honest - good work at a fair price (and my parents have ridiculously old cars - not an easy task.) At one point, I was transferring a 2006 car to my aunt and they helped me with that too. Very grateful these guys have been and continue to be good to my parents. read more

They embody everything that people want when taking a critical piece of your ability to live to them. They are true professionals. My family comes to this shop for everything, and honestly there is usually at least one of our cars there but this time it was my turn. I live out of town but my dad advised me to come here while visiting so I did. Usually they are kind and respectful and get the job done quickly (words from my dad) but not for me. The customer service skills at the front desk? Nonexistent. I needed an oil change and brought it in on Monday, then called and asked for them to check my brakes and then I called back and asked if they could also fix my AC and they said they would tomorrow and I said that that was fine. They never once called me with an update or an estimate and I probably called them 8 times because never got a call. They were rude on the phone and didn't even write down that I asked for them to check my AC. By Tuesday night I called them and they said they hadn't even looked at my car since the oil change the day prior and I asked if it would be done before 11:30 on Wednesday (I had to take it in for a recall) and she said I don't see why not. On Wednesday around 10 AM I still haven't received a call so I called and ask if there was an estimate and she once again said nope, didn't even look at it. I had told them The day prior that I needed my car to be done to drive back home and they didn't write that down either. When I went in the woman at the desk was not pleasant and when I asked her about calling me she said she did and left a message. When I said that I have no missed calls or voicemails she responded with "well next time I'll just bug you then." Long story short I brought it back after the recall work was done and they got my car done around 5pm, more than three days later. My family said that this has never happened before and that they were shocked but I had a really poor experience nonetheless. read more

Even though I have been coming to this gas station for service and maintenance over the last six years, this small mom and pop gas station NOW accept Apple Pay! That is huge because not only does it set this gas station apart from the major bigger chains in the area, it actually now allows me to get 2% cashback on all gas purchases through my new Apple Credit Card. read more

Normally I would give 5 stars because I have always had a great experience but today I had my car checked due to my brake light turning on and was disappointed with my experience. They said the cause of my brake light was a leak with the back caliper. I said they are under warranty so I'm going to drive it out to the shop where I used to live. I asked if they could change my oil since I appreciated them taking the time to check it out and wanted to give them some business. When I got my car they charged me for the brake inspection and when I asked about the charge bc I've never been charged for an inspection before they said sometimes they charge just depends what it is. I felt like I was charged just because I was taking it elsewhere for the warranty and why do you only charge sometimes for an inspection?? I really due love marathon but no one could give me a straight answer and the mechanic seemed annoyed with me when I questioned it. I wish they would have given me a heads up if policy had changed bc my family has been using them for years and we've never been charged to have anything looked at. Also on my drive there are multiple places that say free brake inspection but I wanted to go where I always have and had positive experience. Overall I just think it was poor customer service this time around. My previous experiences have all been wonderful and had a really nice mechanic last time who even took me back to show me what was wrong and was thrilled with the services. read more

At best, this place was simply average in terms of the repairs they did and the prices they charged. When I lived in Schaumburg I went there for oil changes and some repairs because they were within walking distance and therefore easy to use, but their work was never more than average, and the prices were nothing special. What's so big about free air? Buy an air pump and keep it in your garage, then you can check your air at home for free anytime you want. To be perfectly honest, I stopped going there because of the owner and his really strange behavior. More than once, when I went in to pick up my car, he made false accusations against me, and I'm telling you, these were utterly bizzare accusations. The first time, he accused me of saying that he dressed up for Halloween as Robin Hood. Really? Why would I care how he dresses up on Halloween, and even if he had done it, who cares? I asked him when was I supposed to have told him that, and he claimed some stranger called him on the phone and told him this nonsense. Really? So, you're trying to claim you got an anonymous call from a weirdo telling you some strange story and on that basis alone, you're going to accuse one of your regular customers of something weird out of thin air? It made absolutely no sense. Also another time he accused me of throwing out a paper floor mat liner with his name on it in the middle of a street. Seriously? So again, I asked when he saw me do this, and again came the weird story about some anonymous phone call he got, accusing me of this. Most of the time, the goofballs that worked there never even bothered to cover my mats with anything, much less a paper liner! And why on earth would I bother stopping in the middle of driving down a street to throw it out? I didn't know which was worse---thinking he was making these stories up because of a mental problem, or thinking that he really was getting such calls, which then would have meant he was taking the word of an anonymous whack job who called once on the phone over the word of a good regular customer who always paid on time. In either case, these stupid stories about strange phone calls started wearing really thin. I got tired of going in there and listening to his bizarre accusations. I don't know if he did this to other customers, or if he was just fixated on doing it to me. His stories were so outlandish I began to think he was disturbed, so I just stopped going there because it started to give me the creeps. I went to Brandy's on Wise Rd which was fine. Comfy waiting area, prices were fine, and they kept my old car going for years. Best thing was, I didn't have to listen to weird stories and bizarre accusations when I went up to pay, LOL! And thankfully I got out of Schaumburg before the market tanked, so goodbye to this wacky gas station. I would never go near there again. But I never forget when someone falsely accuses me of something, and these experiences needed to be told. So if you choose to go to this place, you'll take your chances. And if he suddenly acccuses you of something weird, well, don't say I didn't warn you. read more

Hands down, Larry & Dan's provides excellent customer service. I drove to Schaumburg from Madison to look at a possible car to buy. I needed a mechanic last minute to look at the vehicle. I called in, and Marty, the mechanic working that day told me that he was booked with appointments already, but could possibly fit me in if I came right away. True to his word, her accommodated my request. He drove the car with me, look underneath, and under the hood. He gave me his experienced and honest inspection. Marty treated me like a friend - someone who cares about another human. Needless to say, I took Marty's honest advice and diagnosis of the car. Thank you, Marty! An honest mechanic! I brought my car in because it was making a noise. I was really nervous because they could have told me any number of things were wrong and I wouldn't have known any better. I've had this done to me by other repair shops in th​e past. My car ended up only needing a little maintenance work. They were kind, affordable and even gave me a ride home. I will start with that they are condescending when you ask questions on work that was done, so you better hope that the work was done correctly if not good luck with them standing behind their work. Do not get A/C work, I had them change the condenser before the warranty was up my AC went out again. Went back they charged again for the inspection and recharge and said that everything was fine with the condenser just needed a recharge. Went back again for the same issue and told that I would have to pay again for the inspection and recharge, and by the way the warranty is up. Went elsewhere and was told that I needed a new condenser. Also they do not have a computer so you better not lose your receipt. To cheap to buy a computer and software for better customer service. They don't care about there customer. read more

It's not often that I write reviews but there's no way I don't want to share my experience..... While on my way to work, I had an unexpected car emergency. I had to walk for over an hour to work. As you can imagine the situation was stressful. With some help I got my car to Larry and Dan's in Marathon Gas station. They quickly diagnosed the car, changed the alternator and got me on my way. Im waiting nearby, and totally knew what's happened with my car, it's normal problem, code P0455, just need detect if any leak point at tank and test two valves. I change any car purge valve for $100, but this time they said need $385+tax, I said no need repair, and they ask $129 for the labor fee, only 20 mins, drive in and drive out. never come back read more

Excellent service, quality people. The owners are up-front, knowledgeable and personable. Martin the mechanic is a great guy. I came in for an oil change and asked for an inspection. When he called to let me know my car was ready and he told me there were no issues and he took extra time to explain what may be needed in the future. When I picked up the car he also came out to talk to me again. He said when you hit 95,000 or 100,000 miles it will be time for more service. I suggested just having it done now and he said that it wasn't necessary. No need to spend extra money. It was refreshing because when I would take my car to the dealership just for a checkup they would always seemed to find something. I'll keep it short and sweet. Dad goes there for an oil change. Great in and out okay on his way. The following day his truck starts acting up so he drives straight to toyota. Service writer states the oil filter wasn't screwed on tight enough so it was slowly spitting oil and shooting it all over the trucks engine and undercarriage. The only reason they get two stars is because my dad brought them the bill and they Paid for it. This past weekend I decided my truck needed new o2 sensors. I was involved in a motorcycle accident and not very mobile so crawling under the truck is sometimes a struggle.. I know this involves heating the sensors to take off and I didn't have a torch with me so I decided to call Larry and Dans... thinking it would be about $30-40 a sensor to take off and replace... not the case. The guy quotes me 2.7 hours at $98 an hour so you do the math. I said okay I'll call you back. I knocked on my neighbors door and borrowed his torch... I knocked on the door at 10:15 in the morning and was done removing and installing the new sensors at 10:45... bottom line... don't go to them. read more

I have been a customer of Larry and Dan's for the past 30 years. I live right around the corner from the station. When I found myself in a flat tire situation I called Dan and he and his partner personally came right over put air in my flat, took my car back over to the station, repaired the tire and drove the car back into my garage. I couldn't have gotten better service anywhere! During these terrible pandemic times this is a prime example of community excellence!
