Ordered White fish Ceviche and it was total disappointment. It doesn't come with any complementary side (salad or bean or plantains). The big-box store saltine crackers were provided, which doesn't pair w/ ceviche. The ceviche itself was drenched in lime juice... I visited this restaurant going by other reviews which hinted this is Latin American cuisine, more than just Mexican. Traditional ceviche have subtle flavors neutralizing its sour taste w/ the beans and plantains. That wasn't here at all... Also it fails the litmus test of good Mexican restaurants (Chips and Salsa). If don't eat meat, this restaurant is probably OK to visit just once. read more

I was not so impressed when I saw the restaurant itself, but I knew from previous experience that looks can be deceiving. The first thing I noticed when I walked in was that everyone there was Mexican. We were sealed quickly and our food was out in around 10-15 minutes. I had the chipoltle and creme enchiladas which were super tasty, but because of the baking process, they had become dry. Overall my entree was good and I would recommend this dish. I was very satisfied with my meal and would definitely recommend this restaurant. It should also be noted that they were very authentic. Las Americas had been built up for me as the best Mexican/Salvadoran food and/or best food on Nolensville. I did like it, but it didn't live up to my expectations for it given the praise I've heard. My husband and I decided to try out Las Americas for brunch/late breakfast/early lunch, so we could really choose from everything on the menu. We stuck with Mexican food this time. My husband ordered huevos con jamon, which was good - a classic take on the traditional breakfast dish. I ordered the carne guisada plate, which was also good. The meat wasn't too consistently cooked (some pieces were extremely tender and others pretty tough), but it had pretty good flavor. The rice and beans that came with both our dishes were delicious. We were surprised when our foil-wrapped package of tortillas came to the table, because it was so thick! We thought: how many tortillas are they giving us? But we quickly realized it is because the corn tortillas are store-bought (which surprised me a bit, because a lot of restaurants on Nolensville make their own or buy homemade tortillas), so they give you six each (because you have to use two at a time because store-bought corn tortillas break). The service was good, and the restaurant is pretty classic looking. It also has a little store attached where you can buy things you need to make delicious Mexican/Salvadoran food at home! 4.5 Come here ready to eat and come prepared to come alone. While Las Americas may not have a ton of reviews on Yelp, the local community is very aware of how fantastic the food here is... and that means crowds. The parking lot is a bit harrowing (steep, backs up on to Nolensville, tight spots), but once you successfully navigate it, the hardest part of your visit is out of the way. Don't make the mistake many first-timers make and walk into the store. Look for the tables and walk in to the restaurant. I came on a Sunday afternoon and it was standing room only. After a few minutes of looking at semi-full tables of families, friends and singles, I eventually relented to sit at the bar. I'm glad I did. Ten minutes later, there was a line of hungry folks at the door, glowering at people who weren't sitting at tables packed to capacity. I was happy to not be taking up more space than needed. I walked in not feeling 100% (had a ROUGH night downtown the night before), so I thought I was going to go for a bowl of pozole and keep it moving. After all, it's a tried & true hangover cure. But once I caught a whiff of a papusa, I knew what I must do... and hope that solid food had the same curative properties of soup. In my semi-decent Spanish (the waitresses are bilingual but you get your order across quicker and more succinctly in Spanish), I ordered a bean & cheese papusa, tamarind agua fresca and a combo burrito with chicken. The papusa was as good as I smelled and read about. It was thick, substantial, tasted great on its own, filled with delicious cheese & beans, topped with fresh, crunchy cabbage, and came adorned with wonderfully spicy sauce. I almost never turn down an agua fresca and this tamarindo was no exception. The glass must have been 32 oz. It was one of those huge red Pizza Hut cups you might remember from your youth. By the time my gigantic (seriously, very very large) burrito came out, screaming hot and sizzling with cheese (almost like a chimichanga), I knew that I had chosen wisely. The kicker (in addition to fresh chicken, hand-made tortilla (I could watch the kitchen making everything to order) and cool veggies, was the bowl of fresh-sliced avocado that came with the burrito. In moving to Nashville from Miami, I knew I was trading in Caribbean/South American fare for Central & North American cuisine but this was the first time since moving, I really grasped what this meant. The menu is larger than I expected, and everything is priced crazy cheap - I had a pupusa and two beef cheek tacos and spent about $6. For $2.30 you get a pupusa the size of a small dinner plate stuffed with meat, beans and/or cheese, crisped perfectly on the flat top. Every meal is served with three types of salsa. I requested a side of sour cream ($1.20) and a serving the size of a small grocery store container of sour cream arrived. The cheek tacos are served with onions, cilantro, a wedge of lime and a hunk of avocado and are less than $1.50 each. I'm stuffed but can't stop thinking about the pupusa. read more

I like mexican but for me it's all about the cilantro, lime, and fresh picos which is certainly not the backbone of Nasvhille's Mexican food scene. However the papusas at Las Americas (which ironically have no cilantro, iime, or pico) have become the only fried Mexican fair locally that causes me to close my eyes and groan subtly. They are this corn pancake filled with anything from simply cheese to beans, pork and cheese, to pork rinds. I've tried them all and I'm a purist, I like the plain ole cheese. Now what takes them from something really tasty to something you daydream about at work is the cabbage topping along with the homemade salsas. I'm so glad I indulged my crazy and tried this because this combination is inspired from a higher being. One papusa is almost a meal in of itself but in case you need to supplement , I highly recommend the carnitas ( tacos I think) i like the chicken ones which come with onions, lime, and cilantro and for $1.00 each which serve my need for a fresher lighter something. Drinks come in bottles so if you are not a big soda drinker then you can easily split a soda between two or three people. The staff are extremely friendly even with a bit of a language barrier. Finally made it to this place and it was very good. The best thing about this establishment is the value you get. My wife and I ordered 5 tacos, a chicken burrito, and a pupusa and it was only $20. You go to this place for the food not the atmosphere and the food is very good. I wasn't super impressed with the chicken as it was really dry but the al pastor tacos were incredible. Definitely the best I have ever had. We had a chicken Burrito Las Americas and it was solid. It wasn't as good as I was expecting but still tasty. The only disappointing thing we ordered was the Queso Y Frijoles pupusa. It just wasn't very good. Overall I really liked this place and will definitely be back. This place is a great combination of crazy cheap and crazy good. Las Americas is a Salvadorean market and restaurant best known for it's pupusas, and it is about as unpretentious as it gets. The pupusas aren't my favourite, but I love the burritos. And they have the best ceviche I have literally ever had anywhere--including Peru. The ceviche is a simple but heavenly mixture of tender tilapia pieces, minced onion, tomato, and cilantro marinated in lime juice and served on a crisp corn tostada shell topped with fresh avocado slices. The fish is fresh, beautifully seasoned, and generously portioned, and the tortilla is the perfect crunchy accompaniment. What I can't figure out is how they can afford to charge two bucks and change for something this amazing that is made with such fresh and delicious ingredients. I had 2 tacos de pollo which were made the perfect way. Double tortilla, onions, and cilantro. The biggest problem was that I couldn't decide which salsa to put on top. I also had a pupusa which they claimed was their house specialty. I am not going to lie. I rather liked it. I had the frijoles y queso one. The only downside for me was them not serving iced tea. Do yourself a favor and go on down to get one. $1.49 per taco (3 makes a nice lunch), simply dressed with lime, onion, cilantro, and avocado. I normally love to get a papusa in place of two of the tacos but I wasn't in the mood for a food induced coma that day. My friend got the ceviche tostada. It was $2.99 and completely loaded with citrusy, light ceviche. The full order of ceviche is $11 or $12.99 and I'm sure you get a ton of it, but for lunch the tostado would be enough to fill someone who normally orders a salad as lunch. If you're a heavier eater get two, or order a taco with it. After I'm done eating I enjoy perusing the pinata selection in the store on my way out. The restaurant is attached to a market and it looks a bit small from the outside. Other reviewers have noted the steep parking lot and that can be a bit dangerous in wintertime when ice builds up. But enough about that. The food: affordable and delicious. Dinner portions are large. The tacos are small - as they should be. My personal favorite is the "pupusa mixta." The restaurant is excellent. I think my hopes were too high from the reviews and that's why I could be disappointed. It wasn't a busy evening and our whole time there we always had to wait extra long for our waitress. She wasn't very attentive, even with our empty cups on the end of the table basically saying "hey, refill me," we got them refilled before we basically left. They had live music and it was so loud you could hardly hear each other. If there's going to be live music in that tiny space, it shouldn't have me shouting over the music to talk to my boyfriend. I couldn't understand the salsa, it tasted like water that had red food coloring and I assume it's the same red sauce that's in a bottle. The chips tasted stale as well. My boyfriend got the Las Americas burrito which I didn't care for, the green sauce seemed watered down to me and didn't have any spice. I got the steak corn tacos and a cheese pupsas, the cheese in the pupsas was good but I didn't care for it. Barely ate my dinner. This is one of those places where you go inside and the word "authentic" hits you immediately. This is no chain store tex-mex place, but a small mexican place whose specialties are their papusas - a delicious taste treat that resembles a large pancake in looks but that's where the similarities end. These are filled with bean and cheese, meats or other varieties of stuffing. To top this off, they are brought out with a large helping of a cole slaw type topping called curtido - very delicious. Another item to try there is a drink called horchata - a rice and cinnamon milky type concoction that isn't too sweet but just sweet enough. It is definitely something you have to try at least once. You won't be sorry! Each time my wife and I have been there the place has been busy - and for good reason. The staff is very friendly and if you don't speak Spanish you can point to the items on the menu which is a combination of Spanish and English. If you are looking for a quiet, intimate place, look elsewhere. This small locale is a bustling business with a continuing din of kitchen staff, waitresses(es), and a spanish tv channel going in the background. If you want to try your hand cooking some of your own mexican food, there is an attached small store with a variety of items for sale. Bottom line - bring an open mind and enjoy!!! read more

One word: Pupusas. It's hard to find pupusas in Nashville. The only places that have them are, like Las Americas, very out of the way. (Don't get me started on the sorry excuse for a pupusa that Chago's has on the menu...) The pupusas at Las Americas are enormous and cheap, cheap, cheap. The first time my friend and I got them, we assumed they'd be pretty small because of the price and ordered two each. Never again! One pupusa pretty much fills up a large styrofoam takeout container. It's a fried corn "pancake" stuffed with beans, cheese and pork if you want it. It comes with fresh cabbage slaw and a thin salsa to top it with. Call ahead and place your order while you drive across town to get to Las Americas. They'll have your pupusas ready when you get there so you can devour it ASAP. read more

It's a half-dive, half-grocery store and there is nothing fancy about it at all. But the food is so good. I have NEVER in my LIFE, loved a place SO MUCH, that I went there two days IN A ROW!!! The food is ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! The first day I got three tacos (beef, tongue, and cheek), a chicken quesadilla, a bean and cheese pupusa, menudo, and horchata. NOT A SINGLE THING WAS IMPERFECT IN THEM!!!!! The chips and salsa at the beginning were also great. The chips were warm and fresh. Today I went back and got tongue and cheek tacos, two pupusas (one bean and cheese, one cheese) and horchata. AGAIN AMAZING!!! 10/10 will go back again Update: interesting thing happened today there. They charged me for things I never had and were suspicious when I informed them and gave me things I didn't order and subsequently charged me extra for them even though I never wanted them. Great food in humble surroundings. This place looks a little shabby, but the folks are nice and the service is fine. The real star here is the pupusa. If you're not familiar with it, they are El Salvadorian, sort of like a fluffy quesadilla. The outside is thicker and fluffier than a typical tortilla, and you can choose different fillings (I usually go with mixta, which is beef/pork and cheese). It comes with a slaw and salsa, and I recommend you try it all together. If you like tacos and quesadillas, and also like fresh bread, then I think you'll really like pupusas. They also have tacos, burritos, tostadas, enchiladas, etc. I've not had a bad meal here. The food is very inexpensive. Pupusas are only $3 and quite large. One will be filling for some, but 2 will definitely be filling for most. Service is fine, but you might need to flag down a server if you need something, as they tend to be busy. We've eaten in and done take out, and they do a good job of packaging for take out. There's also a small store attached. At the counter, they sell large tamales. read more

Pupusas. I was visiting my sister and we came across Las Americas as a suggestion from a friend and we absolutely fell in love with their pupusas. I'm from Texas and to come across a place that serves Hispanic better than they do back home absolutely blows my mind. The pupusas are absolutely AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It was love at first bite. I literally could not stop eating my pupusa and just thinking about it right now, gets my hungry and missing the taste of it. The pupusas are crunchy, cheesy and basically all the good things about Hispanic food. Another thing is that Las Americas is extremely cheap. My group had ordered 2 pupusas and a taco and it was all $6! Extremely worth it! I am definitely a fan of this little hole in the wall place. My husband and i have been dying for some authentic pupusas since visiting Miami, and we finally found some! Walking in we were a bit skeptical because its didn't serve solely salvadorian food. We weren't looking for a Mexican knockoff version of this delicious stuffed pancake. But the prices were cheap enough (roughly $2.19 -$2.39 each), so we decided to give it a try. All i can say is Yum! All were delicious and two is really more than enough. Trust me on that one... I can eat alot! The horchata was tasty as well. Didn't taste like the packaged kind where you add water. The decor was rustic and simple, but who cares? I decided to go to this place entirely based upon what I've read on Yelp. Took a group of coworkers (who typically seem scared when I pick lunch because I go out of my way to find new places) and the consensus was that it was pretty darn good. I had a pork/bean/cheese pupusa and a cabeza (cheek) taco. The pupusa was out of this world; awesomely crispy on the outside, with tons of pork and cheese practically spilling out. The cabeza taco was great too; the meat was quite tender and I like the fact that it was served with an avocado slice. Next time I plan on trying the tongue; if you haven't tried cheek or tongue tacos, you absolutely should. It really reminded me of some of the local restaurants I ate at when I was working in some Mexican border towns at an old job. One of my coworkers had some fried plantains that I tried one of (they weren't on the menu but were listed as a special of the day on the board over the counter) and they were fantastic as well. What's more is that the place is quite inexpensive; as in, their delicious authentic tacos cost about the same as the garbage tacos you can get from a national chain which will remain nameless. One thing that should be noted is that the service was very slow. Since this is my first time visiting, I don't know if this is typical or not, but there appeared to only be one woman cooking and the place was packed so it's completely understandable that it would take so long. This is the only reason I give it 4 stars instead of 5; as delicious as this place is, it might not be the best choice if you have a schedule to keep.
