I had one of the best dining experiences of all time while at Las Brisas this morning. I am in Laguna solo for my first time, and I felt so incredibly welcome by my server, Samantha, and assistant, Manny. Manny had me chuckling as he convinced me to put brown sugar in my coffee and just being the most warm, funny soul. Great human being! And Samantha was also so warm and we found commonality with our Midwest backgrounds! The food was also fabulous. I had the huevos divorciados and it hit the spot! Great flavor and portion size. The albacore tostada was tasty but tiny -- more like a mini taco, not ideal for sharing. The seafood tower, though, was the highlight: loaded with big shrimp, oysters, lobster ceviche & more. WARNING: DECEITFUL tipping practices! Suggested tip amounts printed at bottom of check are inflated. Our total with tax was $200. The bill showed $44 for a 20% tip - that's 22% of the taxed total and 24% of the subtotal. We only noticed because when the server took our credit card, he asked if he should add a 20% tip. We were surprised but agreed, then noticed the tip he gave himself was higher than 20%. When we told him this, he said he used what was printed at the bottom. That's when we saw that all the suggest tip amounts were inflated. This is either a system-wide error or an unscrupulous way to mislead guests to leave bigger tips. We told the manager, who replied that no one is forced to leave anything. We also found out that our server got someone's order wrong, then told the manager that we didn't like the dish. Dishonesty and suspicious practices throughout the restaurant. Buyer beware! Aside from that, the view is nice and drinks are good. Went here today for the first time in many years - a Friday lunch. Sat right smack in the middle of the indoor dining room with all those beautiful windows overlooking the rose garden, people strolling by, and the gorgeous blue Pacific Ocean! Nicely air conditioned and a comfortable table for five. We were helpfully attended to by Ricardo P. who did a fine job and was old school friendly. Other bus and wait staff were equally attentive. Started w top shelf guacamole, perfect fresh, warm, corn chips and two salsas - the green being exceptional. Watermelon and beet salad, roasted chicken breast, Baja style tacos, and a take on shrimp/seafood ceviche all met w high marks. I went off menu w an order of cheese enchiladas rice and beans which Ricardo kindly engineered and they were excellent. I'm old enough to remember way back to the sixties and seventies when the property was still the Victor Hugo Inn and it is a shame that the grounds are not nearly as nicely taken care of - missing the lovely extensive flower beds out front and the constant care that once made this property a world class destination restaurant. I also found the Covid era parking lot extension of cheap dining tables unfortunate. A top notch manager and a prideful owner could turn this place around in six months time. I would probably give Las Brisas a four point five if I could for the really good food and professional wait staff. The view of the ocean easily tips the scale to a five. I came here for the 4 course prix fix Valentine's Day Dinner with my partner and my friends and felt we were treated poorly and disregarded from this server who seemed to be in charged of the area we were seated. We actually had a different server from everyone and everyone around us were getting a rose but we didn't get any. We asked our server if she could bring the heat up in the heater, but she was unable to bring it up and said it was the highest temperature. But towards the end of our dinner the server who was serving everyone else asked if he could move the heater towards another spot and proceeded to put the heater up to its highest. Right as we were leaving he decided to change the temperature. After we put in our order it took about 15 + minutes for us to get our appetizers, I ordered a seafood cóctel and as I was eating it I found a blonde hair in my food. I waited for our server to come by but the only one that was near by was the guy who was serving everyone else and my partner had to wave him down to get his attention. He proceeded to take my app away but didn't seem bothered by it. Then later on it looked like one of the managers brought out my new cocktail and said it was fresh but she didn't have any compensation for the incident. In general my friends and I felt like we were discriminated by the service. Everyone around us got treated better and more attentiveness towards them. We waited long periods of time for each of our courses while everyone else's food came out faster than us. Okay, so I knew this place had an awesome location and we wanted to try it, but the reviews are either great or terrible, so we went with fingers crossed, as you can see from the 5 stars we got the good version - so here is what i think happens - we went on friday afternoon at 3.30 pm for a very early drinks and dinner - in the (gorgeous) outdoor area we were in there were 20 tables, but only 8 taken - so... the service was quite reasonably good - I think if all 20 were taken we would have had a completely different experience - valet parking is a must, parking around there is impossible, that was $20 fully worth it - now for the price... well... it is probably one of the most beautiful restaurant locations in America, so.... suck it up buttercup - 5 people drinks and dinner was $ 550 with tip - cocktails and wine by the glass, plenty of appetizers and mains - now for the food, it was excellent, so again where people say they had a terrible experience, for me it can only be that the kitchen gets overwhelmed and you start getting cold food or whatever, but ours was hot, fresh and really good - we had short rib, mole enchiladas, a mixed burrito special, flautas, calamari appetizers and other dishes all very good - cocktails were delicious - so, good luck my friends, try not to go in peak hour! Went on Saturday, April 11 at 11:30am for two 30th birthdays brunch and were seated right away even though our entire party wasn't there yet. We had a beautiful inside seat by the window overlooking the amazing ocean view and rose garden--simply stunning! To be honest, for a 300 dollar brunch the food was average and the service was the worst we have ever had! Our server Julian on the patio was in way over his head. We had to ask him for refills every time we saw him. He sent out our first course before our fruit and bread came, had to ask for that too. The wrong food was delivered several times. My daughter ordered shrimp risotto. I had a surf and turf dish with 1 steak enchilada and 1 lobster enchilada for $35 or so. Nothing else went with them. When I reserved on Open Table it asked if we were celebrating anything. I indicated bday. In fact our family was celebrating 3 bdays. There were 5 adults and 2 kids. At the restaurant no one acknowledged that we were celebrating bdays. My husband didnt want to order desserts for everyone bc the dinner was already pricey totaling almost $300. They didn't offer a complimentary dessert. I had to ask if they offered any complimentary dessert since we were celebrating 3 bdays. The server was hesitant and said that he'll see what he can do and that he can probably get a small cake.
