OK, now being Latino I am very partial and critical to Mexican restaurants, yet I would have to say that this place is serves great food! Unfortunately, many people think that all Mexican food is tacos and burritos, but this place has some authentic dishes as well. Such as, Costillas, Pollo con rajas y crema, nopalitos, chicken or shrip a la diabla etc... Yet, the only bad thing is every time I go I ask for the Costilla's, which is: cut pork spare ribs in a red chile and tomatillo sauce. This dish is like a comfort food for me and I've been there on various occasions and only ate it once. Ok, now I am not one to recommend certain dishes to anyone, yet if you are not afraid of a heart attack on a plate try their "Tacos De Don Jeorge" they are carne asada tacos with bacon and chorizo! Do not eat here!! I had went in one evening with a coworker. My receipt came to $17.14. I left a tip of $2.86 (2 cents shy of 18% stated at the bottom). It totaled $20.00. I checked my bank transactions, the server Miguel had given himself an extra dollar running it at $21.00. I called the manager. Instead of the manager just listening to me, the customer (isn't the customer always right?), he went to track down the receipt to see if I was telling the truth. Then the manager says that the 2 could have been a 3. I told him there is no mistake of the 0 in 20.00 not being 21.00. All the manager said he would do is give me my change back. I'll keep this simple. The lack of communication between the manager and the staff was not there. Reason being why we had a bad experience. First of all they tried to sit us between two tables on which one side of the table had no room to even sit. Then I went to go asked if we could move to a further back table, I was told no and by the time I had got back, another staff member had us move to that table. I joined and we ordered our drinks, they brought us chips and then 15-20 minutes later asked us if we could move because the table was actually reserved. That is not okay. Came for breakfast and was very disappointed. We ordered menudo it was very bland with no spices or salt. Also got huevos con chorizo plate and they over cooked it all to the point it was burnt. I don't know what's happening with the cooks but the food quality has gone down. read more

We come here often, as it's in our neighborhood. We always have gotten great service. The food is good and the drinks strong! We usually get the Mocajete, with carne asada. It's probably one of the best things on their menu. If you get the nachos, you need to try the grilled chicken. Now that we are regulars, the waiters know our drink order before we even sit down. I will NEVER go here again!! I love Las Cansuelas in Turlock so after a trip to the mall I decide to go here to grab lunch. We got seated right away and ordered right away. I had the Carne asada tacos and rice which was good but while waiting for the bill spotted a huge coca roach crawling on the wall then onto the booth we were sitting at! Told the waitress and she didn't pay any attention to our complaint and didn't seem to care.... We paid for our food and left (food shouldve been comped by manager!) we later called back and spoke to the manager and he acted like he didn't care either not even one sorry was said but the waitress or manager!!! went there with friends. I am vegetarian. everything has lard in it. the chips, the beans, etc. Using lard limits the number of vegetarians they will get coming in. and it is bad for you. I'm surprised to see some of the reviews here. I love this place! not as much as La Morenita or El Rosal, but it's good! The happy hour specials are great. You can go in on Thursday(?) and get $1.50 margaritas that will blow you away. 3 or 4 of those with an appetizer that's half off during happy hour and I'm stuffed and buzzed! On my quest to find great Mexican food especially in the Central Valley this place is a Huge let down!!! I went here because I have been to their other location in Turlock and it was maybe a 3 star, but whoever is running this place surely has missed the mark...first off it took well over 10 minutes just to get drinks which was a big turn off then if you are going to be a solid Mexican restaurant you need to nail the chips and salsa. I will say the salsa is very good, but the chips where actually stale and tasted old. Finally after getting some drinks it was almost another 10+ minutes to get someone over to get our order....this is when it started to go down hill! At most Mexican restaurants your food comes out pretty fast....10 minutes, 20 minutes, 30 minutes, how about the 2 other people that came in after us ate and left and we still didn't have our food. So after almost 40 minutes I flag down our water and ask our waiter where our food is and his response was so compassionate was unbelievable. This whole transaction just to get our food was now at 60 minutes!!! Finally food comes out and I am thinking WOW I hope this was worth it...this is where all 3 of my co-workers would agree that we should of got off on Keirnan and visited a taco . No discredit to the fine establishments on Keirnan Rd, but we where really looking forward to a great sit down Mexican lunch and this really fell short. The food was bland with little to no flavor. If you are in Modesto I still stand behind Maria's Taco Shop it is cheap and good every time as well as the taco trucks on Kiernan or downtown Modesto. read more

We have been coming here for about 6 years, but I've noticed in the last year that it's really not the same. Neither the service nor the food. I thought maybe they had just had an off night on one of the nights we went, but it kept happening. The food was dry and either over cooked or maybe just old, I wasn't sure. I have been here several times for happy hour, and the drinks are always good and prices even better. Stopped by for lunch and was not disappointed. They have a decent lunch menu at lower prices, but still offer their full menu. I had their chile relleno with green sauce and was pretty impressed. Their green sauce was excellent. I usually don't get to enjoy green sauce at other Mexican restaurants because most use the same sauce that they cook with their pork. I asked here, and was told they keep a separate batch of green sauce for use on other dishes. I really appreciate this. I frequent this restaurant because my boyfriend LOVES their burritos and as such, I have experienced a great many dishes from their menu. The food is acceptable, but nothing spectacular. I've never had a dish I hated here, I just find their food to be generic Mexican food, nothing really standoutish about it. Their service is always very good, there is hardly ever a wait time and their margaritas are great. All in all, if you want some Mexican food and you're in the area, this place is pretty good. I have been here plenty of times, but I had such a great experience that I had to write about it. The food was great, in fact probably the best I've had in the Modesto area so far. Sure the food was great but what inspired me to write a review of this restaurant wasn't just the food, it was the amazing service we received. We were greeted with a smile and seated then our server (Marcus) came to take our drink order. The polite, professional and enthusiastic service we got from Marcus was nothing less than amazing. Having worked in the restaurant business and with the public, I know what it takes and this gentleman was spot on, not skipping a beat. I love the been dip & salsa! You can order food to go, have a family meal in the restaurant, or eat/drink in the bar to watch sports. Las Casuelas has a casual and friendly atmosphere.
