Not baaaaaaad (per say) for a Mexican place that focuses mainly on seafood dishes. Definitely won't ever be my "go-to" Mexican spot. This particular one is a hole in the wall place that kinda looks like a dive bar from the outside. And the inside is a definite hole in the wall. Kinda dirty and reminds me of an under kept Long John Silvers or a run down Red lobster. If you do decide to go, then I only recommend the shrimp empanadas and the bacon wrapped shrimp. They're both really good, and the only reason I'm giving this place 3 stars instead of 2. They also serve ceviche to all parties as a starter on the house. And that's also pretty good. read more

Food was delicious and the micheladas were good but don't have any shrimp garnishments. They serve you ceviche with tostadas and salted crackers with it, it's a nice little appetizer versus simply chips and salsa. However, the service aside from getting your food was not good, the waiter never came check on our table. I asked for lemons and the waiter never came back, my husband had to get up and go ask for them. At that point we didn't feel comfortable asking for anything more knowing she wouldn't return. read more

#1 MEXICAN FOOD RESTAURANT ON YELP Went there for the first time based on the yelp reviews and all the great reviews were true. This restaurant is yelp's #1 for a reason. The portions are so large and generous my friend had chichen leftovers for days, while I had fish for 2 days. The staff is so friendly and welcoming that we got there at 7:40pm, 20 minutes before closing so I imagine we'd have to get take out. However the staff said no problem gave us a table and served us without any rushing. We felt special and welcomed but the fact is that they sat down every customer that came in up until 8pm. Closing time for this restaurant is the good old fashioned true closing time businesses used to have, the actual time posted. Furthermore, there was absolutey NO RUSHING us or any other customers. We enjoyed our meal at our leisure and so seemed to everyone else =P Also great to note, I love seafood, while my companion loves select meats but not any seafood. Sometimes it's hard to find a restaurant we can both enjoy, but this one is one of the few. The restaurant had no problem customizing their chicken breast dish to my friend's liking(no vegetables), so he loved it! All the staff was friendly and professional and went above and beyond great customer service at every step. Not onIy were the portions delicious and generous, the staff welcomed and served everyone right up until closing without rushing anyone, they customized my fuzzy friend's oder with no problem, but they even gave me some extra tostadas to go when I asked'em at no charge. I can think of few key phrases to describe this Mexican restaurant - it serves a variety of seafood, delicious Mexican style dishes, accommodates to prepare it your way, and has a lively festive atmosphere! We found this place on Yelp and also snagged up a Groupon deal. We ended up venturing here for an early dinner, but we weren't the only ones! The square brick building is nothing fancy and has that dive appearance from the outside. I can repeat those words to describe the inside, but it's a step above a hole in the wall taqueria. Very spacious interior with plenty of tables and chairs, all geared for large and small parties. We were told to seat ourselves and found a table for two. The minute we sat down, a waiter brought a platter loaded with cerviche, whole tostadas, lime wedges, crackers and hot sauces. The tostadas were lightly salted and crunchy, perfect for breaking them into bite size chips. The cerviche was very tasty that had almost a lemony bite to it. While we waited for our orders, there were two different bands playing traditional Ranchero Mexican music that almost seemed to be dueling for patron's attention. I thought it might have been uncomfortable for some to have a whole band playing at your table while you are trying to eat and talk, but there weren't any complaints. The families just talked louder, while their children had a good time playing and watching cartoons on the TV monitors. The colorful menus had an awesome array of foods that you don't typically see in the average Mexican restaurant. Besides steak and chicken, seafood are their specialties; it was a pleasant change to choose from shrimps, prawns, crabs, clams, octopus, oysters, and Tilapia or cat fish. Our nice waitress helped with our choices and allowed my boyfriend to request a special low salt meal to help accommodate his new restricted diet. I ordered the $12.99 Camarones Al Gusto cooked Empanizados style (breaded shrimp), but they give you several ways to have them cooked. Salad, rice, refried beans and tortillas are included with the meal. Joe K. ordered the $13.99 Fajitas Especiales that combined steak, shrimp and chicken with sautéed bell peppers and onions. We both thoroughly enjoyed the food and found there was no loss of flavor to any of the portions, unlike what a few previous Yelp reviewers had experienced. a la kora shrimp was so overcooked the shrimps were tiny and hard to peel, the muscles looked nothing like the picture and had no flavor so we added a ton of hot sauce. we ordered a pineapple with a bunch of stuff in it, all we could taste was pineapple and the shrimp was also overcooked and rubbery. $95 later and having to ask for water refills and the bill because we weren't checked on at all. we won't waste our time here again. read more

This restaurant doesn't serve complimentary chips & salsa, but instead starts you off with complimentary ceviche & tostadas...yes, please! They win. I always say that I'm going to try something new on their menu each time I go, and then end up ordering the same thing once our waiter gets to me...smh. It's because it's sooo good, though. I get the fried tilapia with garlic sauce, and share an order of shrimp empanadas with whoever I'm with. I've had fried tilapia at a number of places, and many restaurants tend to overcook the fish and dry it out. Not here! Las Islitas does their fish really well. The shrimp in their empanadas are cooked perfectly, too; tender, still have a bite to them, meat is sweet and not cooked to death (pun intended). Everything here is super fresh. I had never in my life experience such a bad customer service like I did on Sunday. First of all my family and I waited for more than an hour to get in!! When they called us to tell us our table was ready they did not offer high chairs for my kids!! I had 2 kids with me. It took them 20 minutes to bring our drinks but that's not the worst. After an hour and 10 minutes we asked our waiter to check on our food order she keep saying you guys are next!! Not to mention that the people that had gotten there after us had their meals already. The main contributing factor as to why I bookmarked this place was that they give you a free bowl of ceviche. It came with tostada shells and Saltine crackers. We quickly demolished it while we waited for our food. There are a lot of seafood dishes. I had the shrimp with cream sauce. It is served with rice, salad, and beans. It also came with tortillas. It was a big portion of food. I didn't care much for the rice, but I liked the shrimp a lot. When it comes to seafood, most places skimp. Not this place though! I really enjoyed the ceviche de pescado here. It has great flavor. Even my boyfriend,who doesn't normally like ceviche, thought it was good. I was impressed that they gave us ceviche and a bunch of tostadas as soon as we sat down. I'm used to Mexican restaurants giving chips and salsa instead, but I was gladly surprised with ceviche de pescado instead. I liked it so much that I ordered another tostada for my meal. read more

Las Islitas was recommended by a stranger at a yard sale, and boy do I want to thank her for her favorite seafood place in the south area. If you enjoy seafood this place will hit your funny bone - we had the large molcajete. A combination of three types of prawns, crab legs, octopus and baby clams in a spicy sauce served in a very large pot belly pig made out of lava rock and came to the table steaming hot. The octopus was so tender and yummy in the broth!!! This dish could of fed four easily, we took a large portion home for tommorrow's lunch. This dish is filled above the rim with the right goods!! Another great surprise - you get a fish ceviche instead of salsa for free with your chips and limes to start off your meal. I alo ordered a large Horchata for $2.50. The wait staff was very friendly and accomodating. I am sorry it took me 14 years to find this place, but I will be back before another month goes by. read more

My complaint is how pricey the plates were there and the did not give as much food as many other taquerias do. I would come back and give them another chance if I was in the area... This definitely my go to spot for best seafood in Sacramento. Food wise I give them 4 stars but on this day Things were a bit different. I ALWAYS make sure to get aguachile green/ or red. Regardless of what else I order. Today I had got the small parillada ($53.00) with green aguachile, breaded shrimp, and camarones a la kora. I loved the a la kora perfect balanced of salty and heat. The breaded shrimp were crispy and not over battered but lacked a bit of seasoning. However my aguachile tasted as if it was spoiled. I can not completely describe the taste it was way to metallic with a very fishy taste and bad after taste . I thought it was spoiled, I could not stomach it. I had talked to our waiter, and let him know what was wrong. He was a really nice guy and He went on to talk to the kitchen staff. Our waiter returned and said they defrosted the shrimp over night and it's not bad. I told him I understand, but my stomach can't down that because of the bad fishy taste which is telling me otherwise. He basically let me know there was nothing he could do because the whole batch of shrimp could just taste bad. And I would have to speak to the owner of the restaurant. After speaking to the owner he said he would give a discount next time. But I was thinking he should apply a discount today since I was unsatisfied with my food nor was it eaten. Over all I was pretty disappointed because of how often I go. And how I didn't enjoy my favorite shrimp. The way it was handled should have been differently. I still had to pay for the entire platter even though I did not eat or like the aguachile. Which would be fine if they even let me exchange flavors. So that is not okay. To me, authentic Mexican atmosphere is not about white table cloths and gaudy, rather cheesy interpretations of Spanish Baroque architecture. It is about the people. The Mexican people always seem so warm and genuine and I am always excited to see them getting together in a wonderful celebration of life with family and friends. It is beautiful to see the way they express this love of life with each other through the sharing of food, music and drink. No one does this any better than the people of Mexican culture. As far as I can tell, you do not have to go any further than Las Islitas on a Sunday afternoon to experience this wonderfully contagious lifestyle. Don't go to Las Islitas on a Sunday afternoon if you are not ready for a party like atmosphere with battling Mariachi Bands, mountains of seafood, and Micheladas flowing like water. Ida and I recently had the immense pleasure of experiencing one of those extremely festive Sunday afternoons at Las Islitas and we thoroughly enjoyed it. We were starved and the nice sized complimentary bowl of ceviche and the crisp tostada shells were immediately pounced upon with great fervor. The ceviche was not watered down at all with its contoured, perfectly elliptical, shaped mound extending far above the upper edge of the bowl. The consistency made it easy to use a fork to place the ceviche onto the small chips we broke from the tostada shells. I thoroughly enjoyed the strong lime flavor of the ceviche in contrast to the fried corn flavor of the tostada shells. I really appreciated that neither the ceviche nor the shells were overloaded with salt and found the flavors to be crisp, tart, and refreshing. I ordered the combination fajitas and Ida ordered the Camarones Al Gusto Empanizado. I specifically asked to not have any salt added to my order and am very happy to report that my wishes were strictly and completely adhered to. I loved the natural sweet flavors of the perfectly sautéed onions and bell peppers combined with the steak, chicken, and shrimp that were lightly accented by Mexican spices completely void of salt. I also was amazed at how much I liked the beans and rice. My only guess is that the reviews I recently read about how bad the rice and beans taste at Las Islitas can only be attributed to chemically altered minds of heavy drug users in the neighborhood. Why have I never been here before? Location? Coma? Senior moment? Whatever the reasons, we headed across town to South Sac, hoping for some authentic Mexican seafood. Turns out, this is the place to go! We walked in to the brick building to a very bustling room, completely packed, very loud, Mariachi band in full effect, servers hurriedly going from table to table. I wasn't sure if we were supposed to find our own seats since there wasn't a hostess station or podium when you entered. I didn't see any open tables so we walked to the back where the cashier was and asked for a table for 2. A server spotted a table next to the open kitchen window and emergency exit and quickly got to work on clearing the table. She profusely apologized for the wait, which really, we waited for a whole 2 minutes? She took our drink orders- a Michelada ($6) and a Corona ($3.25), gave us a basket of tostada shells and crackers, complimentary fish ceviche (yeah!!!), bowl of limes, and handed us the big, colorful menu. Much to the delight of my boyfriend, they had "campechana" (octopus and shrimp cocktail). He gets a craving for that every so often since he's from L.A., where you can find campechana at practically any taqueria (in Sacramento, not so much). Everything sounded and looked so good on the menu. It's nice they have descriptions and pictures. I decided on the "levantas muertos" ($15), a big plate of seafood sauteed in their house spicy sauce, and the bf got the "grande campechana" ($14). Just a few minutes after we finished off the ceviche, our food came. They gave my bf a shrimp cocktail, but it was fixed right away, and he got to work on adding lime, ketchup, hot sauce (NOT Tapatio), and salt. He said it was good and just what he wanted, but to me it seemed like he had to add all those extra condiments to get it up to his standard of taste. My platter of seafood was amazing! I had to ask for a side of rice. It was fluffy white rice, lightly seasoned with peas and carrots. It was sooo good and went great with the pile of shrimp, mussels, octopus, and fish. It wasn't spicy at all but just full of flavor. As I got to the bottom of the pile, it did get a little greasy, but I'm sure it would have been fine with more rice. But by that time, I was too full. I want to thank all the Yelpers who posted pictures of the food and also to Joe K and Ida H for their reviews. You had me at "complimentary ceviche." Y'all definitely steered us in the right direction for some authentic Mexican seafood! Side note: They accept credit cards but you cannot add a tip on the receipt. Wowsa,.. That's some great tasting Botanas.. Best ever! We were served some ceviche with some thick crisp taco shell like the kind that's used for ceviche tostada. That would have cost $ any place else, but at Las Islitas, it is served in place of chips and salsa. It's so good, you feel guilty asking for more. So instead, I ordered the Levanta Muertos Botana. That dish rocked. It was spicy, tasty hmmm good. Yeah! It included shrimp, octopus, clams, mussels and some fake abalone broiled with their special sauce. I have nothing against the fake abalone! For just $15.50, what'd expect?? This plate of food fed two of us and there was still some left!! Beer was ice cold and service was very good. 5 stars and we did not even have the "Especialidades de la Casa." I gotta go back so I can try some cockteles and molcajete. Me and my boyfriend love mariscos. We ordered two campechanas which took about 25 mintues. The food is decently priced. The complementary fish ceviche was delicious but sadly can't say the same about the campechanas. We know what good mariscos are and this definitely wasn't it. The flavor was not there at all. It honestly tasted like boiled shrimp water. No spice) lemon, or salt. It had a good variety of pulpo, camarón, jaiva, and other vegetables. I probably would go again but order some empanadas. read more
