I was scrounging around Uptown hoping to find quality late night eats. Yelp told me the place across the street was open, so I made that my destination. Upon arrival, it was not what I thought from reviews and pictures. Las Palmas was also listed as being open late, so I crossed the street to check it out. This was more in line with what I was thinking. Unfortunately, the posted hours are incorrect. Instead of having an hour to sit and be served, I had ten minutes to order take out. The interior was cute and I can imagine people here for a date or eating with the family. I decided to go with tacos. An order of fish and one birria. There are three tacos to an order for $16. I think that may be slightly costlier than nearby establishments, but not by much. I worried about the state my tacos because I had a ways to travel. But my concern was for naught. The bag and food were so considerately packed, nothing spilled. Including the consommé in a cup for the birria. Having the first fish taco, made me instantly decide I want to try this hot and fresh! It has a heaping serving of pico and a slice of avocado on top. My one complaint is that I needed more fish. Not sure if that's an accurate grumble or just me being late night hungry/greedy. I warmed the consommé a little before dipping the tacos. The onion and cilantro taste was perfect. The meat was well seasoned and melty good. Not fatty or tough like other birria I've had. These are the worst steak tacos I've ever had in my life. It had dry, bland, chewy, old meat. We also ordered chicken tacos but I didn't try it because the meat looked dry and old. The only thing I stomached was the chips and guac. However, less than 2 hours after I ate, I vomited everything out and had diarrhea. By the time we arrived in Washington Heights, we were famished. We found Las Palmas, and I quickly checked the Yelp reviews before we walked in. It's a very nice, clean restaurant, with a little bar, dark wood, and lots of Mexican art. There's a very varied menu. It's huge. Lots of choices. We both had the Mexican coffee (con leche), and it was DELICIOUS. It arrived very hot. It's espresso coffee. Yum! We ordered sandwiches. My mother just wanted lettuce and tomato, but inexplicably, hers arrived with ham and cheese. I ordered the Pollo de Sur, grilled chicken with mozzarella, peppers, onion, and fries. The fries were okay. Not great, not worth the calories. The chips and salsa were good, not great. The salsa was mild. I enjoyed my sandwich, but could only finish half. A very nice place for lunch. The service was friendly. One annoyance was the very, very, very loud blender used at the bar to make frozen drinks. Just stopped by for an early dinner with my kids after my son got a haircut across the street. Good complimentary chips and salsa. My daughter got the enchiladas suiza ( cheese ), my son got enchiladas verde ( chicken ) and I got chile rellenos but we shared the different dishes. Great place for Mexican food in WaHi with generous portions. Came here on a weekday night for dinner and got the chicken fajitas with flour tortillas which came with rice and beans. The chicken came out on a sizzling platter with plenty of peppers and onions. I'm a big eater, but I ended up taking some to-go due to the large portion. Chips and salsa were pretty good as well. Came here a few weeks back with the sis for some dinner. Good food. Had the steak tortilla with rice while my sis had the grilled chicken tortilla with rice. Both were very good. Didn't partake in any drinks but we were satisfied enough with our meals. The issue that comes into play with Las Palmas is that there was only one waitress waiting on all the table on this night which was a Saturday night and when I was looking to close out the check it too fairly a while to get her attention to do so. Wouldn't put the blame on that on her and maybe it was just short staff for the night or management but it shouldn't take close to a half hour to close out a check once you finish your meal. Nonetheless, good food and full bar. I will come back here at some point , (hopefully with more staff) and try something else here. read more

After three weeks of coming to the hospital to visit, and leaving starving because of the lack of variety of food in this area finding this place was heaven sent. There's only so many meals you can eat fried food or Wendy's or bbqs I was longing for homemade, hearty cuisine. The first time I brought my mom here we ordered a quick takeout meal to see how good it was. We ordered tortas de milanesa and my mom got a soup on the side. Which turned out to be one of the best tortas I've ever had! After that my mom became a regular during her theee weeks! The staff was super pleasant and welcoming. Everyone is hospitable and accommodating. The second time we sat down and I ordered a barbacoa de chivo it comes with rice and beans on the side and homemade tortillas. So good. My husband ordered cecina and nopales which came with rice and beans as well. The third time it was Father's Day so we decided to take my dad out to eat. It wasn't busy maybe bc Father's Day no one takes dad out lol, but we ordered a couple of different plates which all came with the rice and beans on the side and homemade tortillas. Every time we ate here we've left so full! They are so generous with their food and delicious. They do take a bit long but you can't rush perfection. Lol the food is so good. This is a great Mexican place! Prior to the pandemic, I used to come here for a sit down lunch, but now I opt for takeout. They are still open, and they accept takeout orders over the phone or online (through 9fold). I've been pleased with every meal I have had here. My favorites are the shrimp burrito, shrimp or fish tacos, or the taco salad. I have also come here after work for margaritas which are quite tasty. We checked out one of the popular Mexican restaurant in Washington Heights, Las Palmas. The interesting story behind them is that they used to be a bodega with a small kitchen until a few years ago. When people kept coming back for food, instead of their merchandise, they decided to go full-on restaurant. Smart move. Now they are one of the very popular Mexican restaurants in the neighborhood. Their complimentary chips and salsa were different from what I usually see at other Mexican restaurants. The "salsa" was more like a sauce, since it did not contain any solid thing like diced tomato, and were really spicy!!! You would want to have a glass of water in your hand before you dig in. The chips are definitely home made, felt a bit thicker and harder than some other chips I have tried at other places. It was still pretty good. We ordered their tacos, which are $9 for three, and you can mix and match what kind of tacos you want. Which is really great, because you can try three different flavors, instead of getting three of the same kind. I ordered Bistetc, Carne Enchilada, and Chorizo tacos. When they came out, it was nice portion and were all pretty good. Thinking that we will need more than just three tacos each, we also had ordered Camarones a la Mexicana at the beginning. Now that we know how satisfying these tacos are, we probably will not do that in the future. This was really huge portion, a lot more than we expected. It was really tasty though! Everything was fresh, tasty, and the staff were very nice. They spoke a little English, but they communicate with you better if you speak to them in Spanish. Its very reasonably priced and always has room to sit, if you don't plan on ordering or getting takeout. My go to is the steak burrito and guacamole. One woman greeted people at the door, answered the phones, took orders, operated the cash register and brought back the food to the table: One woman. After living in NYC for almost 6 months without finding a good Mexican restaurant, I'm please to say that I finally found a place that serves delicious Tex-Mex style food. My daughter and I both ordered mango milkshakes and we were not disappointed. For our meal, my family ordered a shrimp cocktail, fajita tacos, and bistec a la Mexicana. All dishes were fresh and delicious reminding me of home! My only critique would be to add a little more meat to the fajita tacos because they were pretty skimpy. Authentic Mexican food at reasonable prices! I will preface this by saying I had almost given up on finding Mexican food that reminded me of my moms cooking here in New York. But this was pretty damn close! I got the flautas which were crispy and the chicken was well seasoned - I got a side of guac cause they got a bit dry after a few but the salsas definitely were good enough to make up for this.
