I am a field traveler that uses Yelp regularly to find places like Las Palmas. I've never been here before and found this place, conveniently right across the street from my hotel. I had the Pollo en Crema de Chipotle which is exactly as described. My waiter also recommended the Carne Asada, but I decided to go with the chicken this time. It was absolutely amazing. Ended up stopping by here while in traffic headed south on i5, I had to use the restroom badly (just had a baby so you know; when I gotta go I GOTTA GO! ). This was the closest place from the freeway so we stopped by. 3/5 stars for convenience. Upon walking in I seen the menu and everything looked promising! The fish, the seafood, carne. Everything looked real in the photos and not overly edited so I believed the food would be as good as it looked. As we decided to stay and eat, we received our food which didn't look too far off from the photos 3/5 for presentation. Unfortunately, this is where any positive review discontinues. We began to eat our food and the flavor was severely lacking. SEVERELY. I got the seafood soup 7 (or similar name) and it tasted like clam juice. No flavor. No seasoning. There was crab, clams, cucumber and a few other things but it tasted like absolutely air. My partner ordered the whole tilapia, which again looked beautiful but again, TASTED like nothing!!!! Even our 2 year old said the chicken strips from the kids menu was yucky. Food 1/5 for taste. I personally wouldn't return, or advise anyone I know to check it out. Delicious food and friendly staff. It was the closest to our hotel, but we're very glad we ate there. We shared the Parrillada Tropical, one of their specialties, which has skirt steak, chorizo, pollo, chicharron, yucca, tostones, shrimp, and more. We took a lot home for the next day. I asked to order to go, and the girl at front was like "ughhhhhh", and then someone else came out to take my order and made her go into the back. Food came out decently fast. I would think that for a restaurant right by the airport, they would know to toss napkins and/or to go silverware in, but they didn't. The yellow rice is hardly edible. Carne asada has good flavor but the cut of meat is very tough and overcooked. The dish doesn't come with any of the normal things (guac, onions). Just rice, steak, vegetables and tortilla. I had to pay an extra 50 cents for each to-go container, which I have never done before. I was a bit disappointed with my order. Hubby and I both got street tacos with sides of rice and beans, The tacos were chicken (very good), asada steak (a little dry), and shredded beef (more like dry brisket). Actually, Las Palmas is NOT a Mexican restaurant. It is a Salvadoran (pupuseria) restaurant. I am no expert on this type of cuisine, but I know what tastes good to me, and Las Palmas has it! El Tipico is what my boyfriend and I shared. It was $13.99 and had enough food for 2-3 people. We just fell in love with their pupusas which came with a pickled cabbage relish (curtido) and a bottle of thin tomato salsa. They were like thin pancakes stuffed with goodies (You can choose from cheese, veggies, herbs, meats, etc.). Their corn tamal tasted like corn bread and delicious with sour cream. Empanadas looked like a small football and were filled with deliciously sweet egg custard. Everything was hot (even the complimentary chips!) and tasted wonderful. Despite what it says in the title of the restaurant as being a Mexican restaurant; Las Palmas is an El Salvadoran restaurant as well. The menu items are slightly different from your typical Mexican restaurant both in taste and presentation. Many of the menu items are indeed Mexican food. There are burritos, tacos, quesadillas and such. I got the menu item described as a Cheese Stuffed Chile. It sounds like a Chile Relleno but the similarity stops there. The chile was stuffed with hamburger, cheese, onions and more. Something like what you might see with a casserole dish. The dish is not too spicy but I enjoyed it all the same and would certainly get the dish again. Other positive elements to the dining experience was the chips and dip that we got to start out with but instead of salsa we got a kind of bean dip which was quite good! The sides that came with our dish, rice and refried beans were very good as well! The bean dip was not the same thing as the refried beans. Let that be said. I only have one negative comment to make about Las Palmas and that was my Horchata drink. I really did not care for it. It seemed to be grainy at the bottom of the glass and kind of stuck in my throat. Perhaps this was the authentic version of the drink. I don't know. I really don't care for flavored drinks that are made out of powder because of that throat thing. All that gunk gets stuck there. The Horchata I have had before I just got out of a soda fountain before and drank it with ice and enjoyed it. This drink had no ice and was almost luke warm. Despite that I did enjoy the food and would go back. I probably won't get the Horchata again but Las Palmas is good for south of the border food and unique. South of Mexico's border that is. P.S. :( This cute family owned restaurant showed promise as we walked in and already 4 other tables (about 1/3 of the tables) full. We were shown to our table and promptly given menus and water, fresh chips and a nice mild salsa. The restaurant was clean bit old. The highchair was dirty with missing straps. They serve Salvadorian food and the staff appeared to be Hispanic. I was excited to try something different and noticed their specialty was pupusas. So I ordered 3 different kinds. My kids got the enchiladas and street tacos with carne Asada. They brought out our drinks, horchata and a warm sweet corn dink that I can't remember the name of. I've made my own horchata using authentic Mexican recipes so I know what to expect. I'm pretty sure this horchata was made from an instant mix. Very gritty and very sweet. I don't know what the corn drink is supposed to taste like but I enjoyed it even knowing it was possibly from a mix as well and not homemade. The food arrived soon after and I appreciated the quick service. However this is where all the warm fuzzies started to disappear. First they totally messed up my daughters enchiladas with the wrong meat and the wrong sauce. We sent it back. It was at this point I noticed my fork had dried cheese on it so I handed to the waiter and asked for a new one. My pupusas looked amazing! Next came out my sons tacos, the kind on soft corn tortillas. The meat was scarce. :( and the corn tortillas were not even warmed up! No lime either. Very very disappointing. Finally my daughters re-do enchiladas came out. With the right meat but again with the wrong sauce. She said she'd eat it anyway so we did not mention it to the waiter that it was still wrong. We get to eating and my pupusas are even better tasting then they looked! But my kids did not get so lucky. The refried beans were nothing special, tasting like watered down canned beans from Costco. The rice, eh. I tried my daughters carne Asada and every bite I took was fatty and gristly. Some was so bad she had to spit it out as it wasn't even edible. Her corn tortillas were not heated up either leaving 3 very cold enchiladas. The entire time we were there no one refilled our waters either. This is an absolute no-no in my book. You always keep a customer's water filled. If they only served pupusas this place would be great! Maybe shut down the restaurant and open a food truck!
