This establishment is the not only the best place to get coffee and treats, but they are the most community centered place I know! The staff are all pleasant and appear genuinely happy to be there. This particular LaSalle Bakery on Smith Street is more within walking distance to my home, but you'll never catch me walking to get a cupcake, ever. I must drive by this place at least a dozen times a week. Every single time, the wheel of my car seems to want to veer off to either the left or the right (depending on which direction of travel I'm going) and stop into this confectionary sugar land to indulge myself in a tasty little treat. The logical side of my brain reasons with the fat side of myself and says... "Danielle, eat another cupcake and you'll be so morbidly obese, you'll need a wheelchair to get around." For three years I drove past this bakery on my way to grad classes, salivated all over myself, but chose instead to go to the Dunkin' Donuts next door (I know, I know...but I'm a creature of habit) because I was always short on time. Finally, I swung by with my family and we split some treats. I would highly recommend the Red Velvet cupcakes which are the size of softballs and have chocolate chips and a frosting "rose" adorning the top. My kids couldn't even finish theirs so I happily obliged. I had the Lobster Tail pastry, and it was like eating I gigantic harvest horn filled with the sweetest cream filling of all time. I had to finish it off later in the day because I felt like a crack addict digging into this thing. The carrot cake was pretty awesome too. The regular coffee was just so-so, but I arrived today and picked up some iced Banana Hazlenut and it tasted like Zeus himself was pouring sweet ambrosia down my caffeine hole. This stuff was amazing. I also got the nut brownie, a regular cupcake for my son, who ate it in 3.2 seconds. My daughters SPLIT a red velvet cake because they are bleeping humongous (the cupcakes, not my daughters). Sure as hell will NOT be stopping at Dunkies anymore. Hey, this place is awesome! We stopped by for lunch and coffee and had no idea how perfect this place would be for that. Their signature sandwiches are great, fresh vegetables, great cold cuts, good bread. In a moment of weakness/confusion, I also ordered steak and cheese calzone which was good but not really on the same level as the rest, but that's just because calzone's are never really that good, or as good as we want them to be. I'm not sure what I was thinking with that one, probably just distracted by the endless cold winter and looking for something warm. Anyway, they have cute little artisanal pizza's all around the store and they look AMAZING. And their cakes look amazing too. And they have like 5 types of cannolis. The space is clean, warm, inviting, much more spacious than I would have expected, and they played 80s and 90s music which just made it feel friendly and laid back. And the service was excellent. What I discovered was so much better than coffee. LaSalle bakery has the best of everything! The coffee is great, the raspberry iced tea is fabulous. The pastries are phenomenal, particularly the pumpkin cheesecake and triple chocolate ganache. The food is delicious! Most amazing whole wheat pizza, spinach pie, and chicken and escarole soup. I've lived down the street for 20+ years, so I've been here numerous times. This place is overhyped. Customer service is great (they have SO many employees who try to take orders as quickly as possible), their displays are usually full and appealing, and they have a lot of variety in terms of cakes, pastries, breakfast items, sandwiches, coffee, bread, etc. It's almost always clean in here and can get pretty busy. I think the way this bakery is run is great. They're always adding things to their menu (whole wheat protein pizza was something new to me), and the employees do an excellent job to keep this place running smoothly. However, I think the basic taste of most things here are merely sub-par. The iced coffee lacks flavor and does not have any sort of caffeine kick to it. I've tried different flavors, iced lattes, and even hot coffee but everything just seems to be bland. The pastries are overly sweet and oftentimes overpriced for what you get. They advertise a fruit tart, which isn't really tart-y at all as it's just fruit + custard on a pound cake. I feel like they resell old baked goods, because sometimes their brownies and biscottis can be hard and dry. The pies are good and I usually come here for Thanksgiving pies. Zeppoles are good and come out around March. The breakfast pastries (I've tried danishes, croissants, muffins) are really nothing special. The bagels are okay. It's also difficult to get in touch with a manager here - I've tried many times to submit donation requests to managers (I've even submitted letters in person) for nonprofits, but I've never gotten a reply. The only reason I continue to come here is because of the convenience in location. Although their bakers and cake decorators do an amazing job in terms of appearance, I think a lot of things here are overpriced for what you get. read more

WHY have I not known about LaSalle Bakery?? I was driving by on my way home to Providence from a meeting in CT and stumbled upon this treasure trove bakery. Providence has a number of fabulous bakeries--Seven Stars and Olga's would be sufficient for me. But LaSalle has a more "neighborhood bakery" feel with amazing PIES and reasonable prices. Their sandwiches are insanely fresh on wondrously crispy bread, and they sell savory POT PIES!!! A stable spot for my pie fix is exactly what I have been looking for in Providence. LaSalle has got my attention, and I definitely need to return regularly to check out some other items on their menu. read more

After reading an article featuring the best places in the US to go for Pizza, I saw that LaSalle Bakery got a mention for their RI pizza strips and calzones under Providence #2 ranking. Though I am bias towards Colvitto's pizza strips since live in South County, LaSalle was definitely worth the trip. I had the spinach and feta croissant, a meatball calzone, and a red center strip. Everything tasted fresh, as it should for a bakery that is busy. I liked that the dough tasted fresh baked and not overly processed. The croissant was airy and the spinach was not bland at all. Like many bakeries in RI everything on the menu is surprisingly affordable, making it a great option for lunch. Though I am not a big fan of pastries or dessert items, LaSalle has a large offering of Italian classics with Zepoles being a popular item. Overall, I recommend this place as a must-go when in Providence. read more

I came here for lunch the other day and was not overly impressed. I had heard great things about the veggie pizza so I ordered a slice and a steamed soy milk. Mmm the soy milk was yummers, but the pizza not so much. It was loaded down with spinach and other veggies, tons of cheese and sauce. So I guess if you like that sort of thing, maybe you'd dig it? I just didn't like the choice of veggies, the sauce, or the cheese they used. The crust was delicious though...really buttery. Had this place on my food-dar for a while, having heard numerous accolades about their desserts and wonderful customer service. While the decor was not earth shattering and gave a dunkin' donut vibe, the services were excellent and they were very polite. The desserts, at least the yogurt based muffin and the pistachio cannoli were really disappointing. The cannoli were pre-made and the filling was too sweet and I really couldn't appreciate much of the savory nutty flavors of the pistachio. The yogurt muffin, was, for a lack of better word, uninspiring and fattening, enough said. What really sold the place, however, were the sandwiches and the calzones. They're incredibly well priced, and the spinach calzones are some of the best I've ever had. The focaccia ham, red pepper sandwiches are amazing and great when pressed into a panini. Best of all, there are ample outdoor seating to enjoy your dessert and your lunch outside with decent protection of the sun if you so desire. Overall, even though the baked goods weren't all that impressive, the lunch menu goodies and the great service yielded a 4-star review. Be aware that both Bakeries have cafe areas and students enjoy lounging ther so it may not be very peaceful place after schools let out :-) My favorite pastries are the tiramisu and the cheesecake, very well done and not overly rich. We went here to try some sweets on a Sunday afternoon and were disappointed. I got a red velvet cupcake with what I suspect was cream cheese frosting and had a large rose on top with green leaves. They should have stopped at the cream cheese frosting. It looked like something you would get at a grocery store bakery. It was good, but nothing special. I would have chose something else, but nothing really stood out. My husband got a chocolate mousse tower which he enjoyed, but again nothing special. We got a peanut butter m&m cookie to go which was somewhat tasteless and over cooked. We had originally hoped to get slices of cake, but as far as we could tell you had to buy the whole cake. I'm torn on my rating - the bread, pastry and sandwiches are very tasty, but I was both surprised and disappointed when an employee informed me that they use hydrogenated oil and trans fat shortening in both their soft rolls, as well as their cakes/frostings. In my experience, most high end bakeries use butter, butter cream, cream cheese, etc in place of hydrogenated trans fats. I sincerely hope management will consider eliminating these unnecessary chemicals from their products - they're not needed! Coffee was meh - the milk in my latte was boiled and scorched. I don't know how l have never been here before. Oh my god ! My friends all keep telling me to go so I finally went. Every single person who I came across who worked there said hello with a big smile. After some debate I got a ham and cheese croissant , a lemon square, an apple turnover , and a lb of dough. Last minute I spotted Chocolate hazelnut coffee so I had to have that too. It was about $12.00 all together which isn't bad for all I got. Now the food ... Coffee was delish. Hot and fresh. Lemon square was chock full of lemony goodness. The apple turnover was buttery and sweet and generously filled with apples. The croissant was cheesy and buttery and had just a few pieces of ham which I love. Too much ham can overwhelm it. The dough. I think I paid $1.50 for it. It rose beautifully and I was able to Stretch it no problem for my pizza. I am so looking forward to my day off so I can go again and get some more croissants and coffee ! read more

Lasalle is a neighborhood staple. I was lucky enough to live between both the Admiral and Smith Street locations. I honestly couldnt pick a favorite if you asked me to...but I do feel that they have two slightly different vibes. Although, I do honestly prefer the coffee made on Admiral. The service is always quick, friendly and efficient. The ready made soups, salads and sandwiches are scrumptious and affordable. The veggie pizza slices and fruit tarts are pretty much an addiction. The new parking lot was a great/quintessential addition. There used to be a.m parking wars on the street between patrons and bus drivers (which was hilarous but albeit dangerous) I just recently moved back into the neighborhood so ill be stopping in for croissants pretty soon. read more

The Italian bread & rolls are great, the cakes are awesome and my absolute favorite chocolate chip cookies anywhere (nice and big and the right combination of crisp exterior and chewy interior).
