After my regular banh mi place moved away, I've been trying to find a replacement that's just as good. This place came as a recommendation by a coworker so I decided to check it out since it was near the office. They have most of the standard fillings for banh mi, as well as shredded tofu. This was a bit of a surprise as I was expecting more of a tofu cake but it was delicious! It had a bit of texture and flavour of tuna salad, so if you're not a fan of canned fish, this might not be for you. Between the different taste, the fresh pickled veggies and the super crunchy bun, this is definitely one of my choices to go to for sandwiches. The cost is also really great (~$6 for a good sized sandwich). There's a few breakfast items, as well as beverages, so there's several options available. read more

I was walking around Chinatown, looking for something quick and reasonable priced and bonus if the restaurant looks clean. I then happened to be at a crossroads, stuck between Subway and Latte Express. I figured that there are Subways everywhere so I decided to get myself a $6 banh mi at Latte Express. I went with the #7 combination which includes ham, steamed pork, pate(duck liver), mayo, cucumbers, cilantro, jalapeños, and pickled carrots and radish. Keep in mind that the ingredients in the combination are all cold but the bread is warmed up. Food Tip/highlight: Be careful of the bread as it is super crispy and crumbles easily which can cut up your gums when eating and also cause a bit of a mess if not eaten carefully. I was a little hung over and super hungry! Realized I was craving a Vietnamese sandwich and decided to venture to Latte Express to satisfy my craving. I got here last Thursday, July 21st around 2pm. Got the Grilled chicken: mayo, carrot & daikon pickle, onion, cucumber, jalapeno, cilantro ($5.50), add Pate. Not sure how much the pate was since I didn't pay attention to my total, but I think it was an extra $0.50 which seems standard. The chicken had a nice smokiness and there was lots of it! Definitely a good amount of meat. And the veggies had a nice pickle. The only disappointment in the banh mi? The pate. There wasn't much of it, so it didn't any creaminess to my sandwich. Maybe I should have asked for extra pate, but I wish there was a lot more. Good banh mi and close to work. I just need to ask for extra pate next time! read more

The most unfriendly man in San Francisco runs this place. Go to Viva Cafe on 601 Montgomery Street, located right next to the Transamerica Building, instead. I give this place 5 stars because it is exactly as it is intended to be. A well run shop for coffee, baked goods, breakfast sandwiches, and Banh Mi sandwiches for lunch. This place is a gem. I always get the #5 -- barbecue chicken. The meat is always warm and tender, and there's always a generous amount of it. The chicken looks like cha siu because of the sauce they use. In the #5 there's also daikon, cucumber, cilantro, onions, and jalapeño. The bread is toasted but not too crunchy. It's a great sandwich and costs under $6! It's so wonderful to find good food for cheap in SF! The exterior is unassuming and the interior is pretty simple. There are very large signs displaying their sandwiches on the back wall, so near-sighted people like myself don't have to squint. It would be a crime for me to not leave a review for Latte Express. The store is ran by a couple (my guess is Vietnamese husband and wife) and I get that 408 vibe just by placing my order with them. I typically make my pit stop here to pick up banh mis in the morning and Latte Express has one of the best pork meatball banh mi's in the city. This place is a real sleeper since they are an old school shop with nothing flashy that's screaming to get you to try them out but they are a must try in my books. read more

Was surprised at how crowded this place was at lunch time. Many San Francisco financial district suits coming to grab a bite to go. I was craving a Bahn Mi sandwich and had yelped places near me and this popped up. The sandwich came very quickly after I ordered. It's a very mechanically run ordering process, in and out fairly quickly. I ordered the tofu Bahn Mi sandwich. I wasn't a huge fan of the shredded fried tofu and the bread felt a little harder than I though it should be. But somehow it all seemed to work because I ate the entire thing and felt very satisfied afterwards. I really loved yeh amount of flavor they put on the sandwich.. it wasn't too much (which I've had many bahn-mi places slather on the sauce) but wasn't too little (had many bahn-mi places not put enough to not make you feel like you are eating a lot of dry bread).. it was just right. The coffee was bold and strong but not to the point where it's bitter. It was nice and sweet! We ordered the #4 pork sandwich which turned out surprisingly great. Our favorite part when comparing it to New York is the fact that they used real slices of pork. Juicy and tender, not minced. A few of us stopped im for a quick breakfast on our way to the MOMA. It was a tiny little shop, yet still offered quite a few options for breakfast (not sure if they have things available or any other meals) We all just got bagels, but DANG they were tasty! Unfortunately, I don't think I ordered the right thing and would highly suggest against ordering the BBQ chicken banh mi if you 1) don't like dry meat 2) have a strong dislike for a black pepper. The chicken was entirely coated in black pepper to the point that it was unappetizing and spicy. They also use red dye to make the chicken look like Chinese BBQ pork, which I thought was unnecessary as it didn't have the same flavor at all. I heard from colleagues that the combo and grilled pork were much better and I remembered hearing everyone after me order this, so I missed out. I got the #9, pork sandwich and your choice of the iced coffee or Thai tea. I went with the iced coffee. Coffee is O-K, not super sweet, and kind of strong coffee flavor. The ice is interesting, kind of shredded small bits of ice. The sandwich was warm and a decent size (I totally forgot to take a pic, I was so hungry!) the bread is pretty flaky though, imo. There was a lot of meat though. Really decent ratio of meat to veggies. The meats and veggies were nice and moist. I forgot to say "no jalapeños," but even those were ok here. Usually I don't like spicy but these had a small kick to it, that I appreciated on a cold day! Lol, may need these on my French/Viet sandwiches now! Service was pretty quick. Value value value. I think I've found my new weekly lunch spot in FiDi. This little coffee/donut shop/Vietnamese sandwich deli is located on the borderline of FiDi and Chinatown. There was only 2 ladies working there today - one (wo)manning the cash register/taking orders and one making the sandwiches. I waited less than 10 minutes for my sandwich, despite the long line. Impressive!! It can get pretty crowded here around noon so I recommend not coming at that time if you wish to eat in, otherwise you can take your food to go because there's only like 5 bar stool style seats in this tiny establishment. $3.25 for #3 (pork cake and pate) Vietnamese sandwich and $4.25 for 3 spring rolls (which i split with my co-worker). Nice little place on the corner of Kearny that not only serves sandwiches but also coffee, pastries and a few other things. My review is only about the Vietnamese sandwiches. This is a cash only place so make sure you bring money. They have a sign on the counter reminding you. The pork sandwich is a good size for the price and I asked for it to be extra spicy (lots of jalapenos and I can take the heat!). It is toasty on a french roll and comes with all of the usual condiments, cilantro, carrots, daikon, cucumber, etc. The line moves quickly and the place has very few seats in case you want to eat in. Most of the orders were to go anyway and I got my order quickly and was out the door in a few minutes. I will be back to try other other kinds of sandwiches and their shrimp spring rolls. read more

This is the magical Vietnamese sandwich shop mentioned in a review I wrote earlier this week. Best darn Vietnamese sandwiches around, hands down. And at $3.75, there's no use getting into discussions about price vs. quality, etc... because here, there's no trade-off! It's the best Vietnamese sandwich in the area, without a doubt. And it's half the price of anything else you'll get on Kearny closer to downtown (and much better than most things you'll get on Kearny too). I like the grilled pork and the grilled chicken. The meat is pretty good, the bread is a quality Vietnamese-style baguette, and the veggies inside are fresh and plentiful. Add another $2 or so and you've got yourself a bangin' Thai iced tea or Vietnamese iced coffee. The girls working there are super friendly. We walked by this place and decided to give it a try. #7 combo was pretty good and definitely hit the spot for my banh mi craving that day. The bread was crunchy and it tasted really fresh like it had just come out of the oven. There was also a good amount of meat and pate which was a huge plus for me cuz some places in SJ are stringy about the amount of pate they put in and I often have to ask for extra. At first, I thought it was a bit pricy for a banh mi.. but again, comparing to SJ which is roughly at $5 also, I presume this is decently priced after all. There was an older man at the cashier and an older lady making the banh mi to order. Super cute and looks like a family owned business.
