I got the #9, pork sandwich and your choice of the iced coffee or Thai tea. I went with the iced coffee. Coffee is O-K, not super sweet, and kind of strong coffee flavor. The ice is interesting, kind of shredded small bits of ice. The sandwich was warm and a decent size (I totally forgot to take a pic, I was so hungry!) the bread is pretty flaky though, imo. There was a lot of meat though. Really decent ratio of meat to veggies. The meats and veggies were nice and moist. I forgot to say "no jalapeños," but even those were ok here. Usually I don't like spicy but these had a small kick to it, that I appreciated on a cold day! Lol, may need these on my French/Viet sandwiches now! Service was pretty quick. This is the magical Vietnamese sandwich shop mentioned in a review I wrote earlier this week. Best darn Vietnamese sandwiches around, hands down. And at $3.75, there's no use getting into discussions about price vs. quality, etc... because here, there's no trade-off! It's the best Vietnamese sandwich in the area, without a doubt. And it's half the price of anything else you'll get on Kearny closer to downtown (and much better than most things you'll get on Kearny too). I like the grilled pork and the grilled chicken. The meat is pretty good, the bread is a quality Vietnamese-style baguette, and the veggies inside are fresh and plentiful. Add another $2 or so and you've got yourself a bangin' Thai iced tea or Vietnamese iced coffee. The girls working there are super friendly. I work in Chinatown, and I haven't had a vietnamese sandwich in maybe a year because Little Paris on Stockton closed down related to the MUNI constructions. (I'm picky about the authenticity of my Vietnamese food.) Then, I went to Latte Express today out of desperation and found another place for heavenly Banh Mis. I was reluctant to come here for so long, because they didn't have a cheesy enough Vietnamese name for their establishment. My mistake. The sandwiches are authentic (I've only actually tried the pork and pate sandwich.) and at a great price. Their Viet coffee does not seem as strong as what I'm used to getting, but coffee is coffee when you need to wake up. Additionally, they have regular coffee, Thai coffee, vegetarian sandwich options, and a variety of other beverages and snacks to pile on to your meal. YUM. It's clean. The service is fast. There is a small seating area as well. Until, Little Paris reopens down the street, this will be my go to place for banh mis. read more

I was in the area with a few friends and we needed a quick bite. We walked by this place and decided to give it a try. #7 combo was pretty good and definitely hit the spot for my banh mi craving that day. The bread was crunchy and it tasted really fresh like it had just come out of the oven. There was also a good amount of meat and pate which was a huge plus for me cuz some places in SJ are stringy about the amount of pate they put in and I often have to ask for extra. At first, I thought it was a bit pricy for a banh mi.. but again, comparing to SJ which is roughly at $5 also, I presume this is decently priced after all. Had to "cheat" on Saigon Sandwich mid-week...sorry S.S. - didn't want to but had to because of work...I know - lame. So I stop over to Latte Express again... Ordered up a #7 banh mi combination sandwich & a Viet Iced Coffee. The sandwich contains ham, steamed pork, pâté and (yes) head cheese. I thought the sammie was average at best. The head cheese kept giving off this crunch...is that supposed to happen in a meat jelly? I'm not mistaking it for the pickled veggies...I conclude that perhaps piggie ears and/or snouts were used in the making of said head cheese. Best Thing: Grilled Pork Banh Mi (#4) Ambiance: Tiny restaurant with maybe 6 or 7 seats Price: $5.50 for a sandwich! Banh mi, the iconic Vietnamese sandwich is a cheap yet delicious staple, and Latte Express does it well. Unlike their cleaner, less Chinatown-y counterparts, they're true to what banh mis are, a cheap, quick and delicious bite to eat. I personally could never stand that most banh mi places in the city charge people, 9-10 bucks for a small sandwich. Latte Express does it right with dirt cheap prices and delicious, honest food. While from the outside it looks like a very unassuming shop (and honestly, who calls a banh mi shop "Latte Express"? I'm not even sure they serve lattes), they've built their reputation with some solid banh mis. To me, a banh mi's success or failure depends on two things: the bread and the filling. For bread, they use a deliciously crusty Vietnamese style baguette, essential to any banh mi. While not the freshest bread, it crumbles and crunches in the way all good banh mi baguettes do. They also have a fantastic grilled pork, with all the typical banh mi fillings like cucumbers, carrots, and daikon. I'm also normally a fan of Vietnamese ham and pate for the more traditional flavor, but their version is uninspiring. All in all, it's an unassuming place with great prices and great food. So great that every time I go, I debate getting two sandwiches because they're so affordable! Then I get two, and then regret my decisions because its just so much food. Went back a second time, not during the lunch rush and the pork sandwich which was so terrible the first time (consisting of large chunks of pure fat) was absolutely delicious. There was ample servings of pork along with a nice portion of jalapeno, cilantro and pickled carrots. The canned cokes are also a few cents cheaper than other locations. Previous review (two star): I have no idea why this place has such high reviews. It's dark inside. The food is served very quickly, but the pork sandwich had large chunks of pure fat and the bread, though toasted, didn't really impress. Up to this point I'd tried 2 other banh mi shops, and this place in my opinion is the better one. I had eaten a lot of banh mi in my life (trust me, I spent my teenage years in Vietnam), and this shop meets my standards :) Can it be better? Sure! The bread was slightly dryer than my liking and crumbled a bit with each bite, but the tofu & sauces were full of flavor and totally made up for it. As the reigning overlord (Duke) of Latte Express 5 for life the panda says YES to vietnamese sandwhiches. Just wave your hand #4 when you walk in if don't feel like talking. Order gets in and you can zoom out after ordering. A few talking points: 1) Spring rolls are a good price and pretty filling. Worth trying at least once. I have one per week. Comes in around 11am. Sometimes buy it in conjunction with #2 below if I know it is going to be a late nite past 8pm at work. Peanut sauce included. Under $4.50. 2) Grilled #4 Pork - Spicy and goes down good with a diet coke. Dont' know what to eat? Eat #4. The bread rolls are pretty awesome, the pork good, and the jalepenos with carrots add some off-setting kicks that make me feel crisp during summer and warm during winter. Wish they still had the Tim's jalepeno chips. Seems they stopped buying my combo:\. 3) Donuts in case things go south in stressland. I've had few this week. It's not the best banh mi, nor is it the worst banh mi. It IS, however, the cheapest banh mi in the Financial District/Chinatown border. $3.50 for combo ham and pate or steamed pork $3.75 for roasted pork or bbq chicken (roasted pork is LIGHT YEARS better than the bbq chicken, imho) They serve it on toasted long baguettes with all of the wonderful accoutrements. I found my banh mi to be a little lacking in mayo so next tiem I order, I'll just ask for extra. You can't beat that price for a decent sandwich anywhere near my office. The jalapenos are always super fresh and spicy so ask for no pepper if you don't like spicy... or ask for extra if you like it hot like me! The girls that work here are always super sweet and always remember me even though I don't go there a lot. They don't really have much seating there so your best bet is to take your order to a little hidden park on Commercial (About a half block up from Sacramento and in between Kearney and Montgomery) where there are tables and a fountain to enjoy. read more

Was wandering around on Kearny Street on Friday after I brought my new (to me - they're actually abut 50 years old) watches in for a checkup. I debated between Hun's Won Ton and having a sandwich. I ended up going back to give Latte Express 5 another shot, and this time it was payday. I had a bbq chicken banh mi, which was pretty pink (?), but delicious along with a Thai iced coffee. I was sailing for the rest of the day and part of Friday night on the combo of sugar/caffeine and the amazingly hot jalapenos in the banh mi. Woo-hoo! There is a shocking dearth of Yelp reviews about the best sandwich at Latte Express. *The #2 BBQ Bacon sandwich for $3.50.* And by BBQ Bacon they really mean bright pink barbecued FAT. Heaven! This is a 4.5 star sandwich in a 3 star establishment. Its innards are shocking fuchsia pink and full of fatty flavor. It's tangy and spicy and has that delightful aftertaste of pate and mayo. I do not doubt that there is MSG. And I cannot stay away. Let's back up quickly. The other Vietnamese sandwiches at Latte Express are passable (3 star), but nothing to call home to Mom about. Their sandwich bread is the right consistency but not thick enough. As a result, the girls who work there can never stuff enough meat, pate, and assorted pickled veggies into the sammie to make me happy. Plus, they are never as generous with the pate as I'd like, and they're a little more expensive than I'm used to paying for Vietnamese sandwiches. A few other issues: #1 Ham and Pate ($3.50) - The 'Ham' is headcheese. Which is delicious and fantastic! Only problem is that I've hit crunchy parts of their headcheese one too many times. Don't get me wrong. I LOVE headcheese. Bring on the innards, brains, and organ meats. But when I've got to wonder if I've lost a tooth, there is definite detraction from the overall enjoyment of the sandwich. #3 Steam Pork ($3.50) - Delicious! The steamed pork is soft and pliable. This would be a good sandwich for someone who wants something simple and not too full of flavor. You know when you have one of those days? When you just want something like chicken noodle soup? Well, here's your answer. #4 Grilled Pork ($3.75) - It's grilled pork. Yawn. #5 BBQ Chicken ($3.75) - It's BBQ Chicken. Zzzzzz. BUT THE BBQ BACON! It's warm and barbecued fat layered onto pate, jalapeos, and pickled daikon. You can't get more flavor or taste! Yes I wish the bread was bigger. Yes, sometimes I wish they would use more pate. But other than that, it's perfect. Perfect you hear? Other things to note: -Cash only -The ladies there are super nice. They do get swamped during morning and lunch hours. This is a great take out sandwich shop. The Vietnamese Sandwiches do not cost a latte (sorry), made-to-order, fresh, tasty and the two girls always brighten my day with their incessant giggling. I recommend the BBQ pork sandwich with an iced coffee to go. Get the hot peppers in your sandwich then pick them out. You want the essence of these in your sandwich but you'll be in tears if you happen to bite into one. Also, try to get there early if possible. There is about 6 seats at the window and one small table in the middle...so I do not recommend eating here unless it's pretty empty. They have a great drink selection in their fridge and the #5 is my favorite (Grilled Pork). There is also a great combo, #9 I believe (grilled pork with vietnamese iced coffee) for around $7.05 plus tax. There is free refills on Peerless coffee. Their donuts are pretty good also, and there is a selection of random snacks and instant noodles for purchase on the right side of the wall. Overall, their sandwiches are very good. A co-worker turned me on to this quirky little shop. As others have mentioned, from the outside, this place looks like it's all about coffee and muffins, but walk inside, and along the back wall is the menu of delectable vietnamese sandwiches. I alternate between the pork and the chicken, or if we go there in pairs, we order one of each and split. Generous portions and quite the bargain at $3.50 for a FRESH sandwich in SF? Get out!
