Okay, Okay, it's NOT quite what it USED to be. I've been coming here for FORTY years, it all started with tent camping. Over the years, we've progressed to beach house rental, but we STILL have family and friends who camp here. In fact, we have a HOUSE compound and a campground compound each year we visit. MOST fun when the huge group of friends roll in to DB/LL. This past fall, we had multiple family members camp (and the GLAMOUR-SQUAD) stayed in the house. I like BOTH, so I stayed a night with In Laws in their luxury 5th W. Campfires shared between sites, and EARLY coffee making for me. It was cool to walk up to the camp sites of new friends, and talk to long time LL employees and friends (known for decades.) GREAT group just returned from crab season (dung. of course!) Thankful to have shared in that! Can't wait to find the photos of the raccoons that invaded the dumpster, my Pop and I caught great photos of that! Not your place for quiet oceanside camping. Our only night there, we were surrounded by raucous partiers carrying on well after curfew hours. Night two of our booking was non refundable but we were glad to escape. On the other hand there was a nice view in the opposite direction of a marsh and sand dune. read more

Good place for crabbing during Dungeness season. The pier is closed permanently now because it is old and rickety so bring your rod and snare and don't forget to buy a day license to crab or fish or you can be fined if caught. The place is really peaceful. Great place to relax. read more

Not often I go out of my way to write a negative review. But Lawson Landing went above and beyond to ensure the information that I impart here. Actually, I signed up to Yelp so that I might share this information with others. Last night, while on a small bicycle tour, my girlfriend and I cycled over an immense amount of hills to get to Dillon Beach and camp at Lawson Landing. We were exhausted when we got there, and found out that they had no showers. Because they were the only game in town, and we weren't about to pedal the mass of hills back to Highway 1.... I figured we'd just bite the bullet and pay the $30.00 to tent camp. That might have been the end of it had we not been delivered to what was little more than a patch of garbage-strewn dirt equipped with porta-potties (or the choice of long walk to dilapidated bathrooms) without showers. I wouldn't have even written this note had it not been the fact that we had to spend the entire evening watching styrofoam, plastic bags, bottles, and cardboard from the campgrounds overflowing dumpsters blow straight into what is otherwise the pristine waters of Tomales Bay. When we mentioned this to the folks at the gate, (Whom I might add, were less than friendly) ... they just shrugged and said, "we had a really busy weekend." Which to me translates to "we are either too lazy" ..or... "We are more interested in profits than keeping the area clean." Whatever the case...there is absolutely no excuse for allowing overflowing dumpsters to send garbage into Tomales Bay. I'm sorry, but that's just unacceptable in most anybodies book. Honestly, if your reading this, I'd discourage you to stay at Lawson Landing until they clean up their act. Honestly. To the people running this campground.... C'mon folks. You have such a great little strip of land in such a unique and environmentally sensitive area. You can do better. Seriously. r read more

As others have noted, this SHOULD be one of the most beautiful spots in California to camp. It really COULD be, if it wasn't woefully mismanaged. We arrived around dusk, and quickly realized we'd have to weave around massive cow patties as we set up the tent. Everything we did - where we stored the firewood, where we sat, where we pitched the tent - revolved around the poop minefield scattered around every inch of these camping sites. That was disappointing (and gross) enough, but once the fire was going, beer was flowing, and sea breeze rippling through the camp, we decided to let all that go and reset. Until our midnight visitor. At almost exactly midnight, a massive cow mooed right next to our tent. I don't know if you've ever had a cow moo directly in your ear with nothing separating you but a centimeter of plastic, but trust me it wakes you up. BIG TIME. We spent the next 30 minutes shooing the cow away. As we did, we realized people all around the campground were still partying and paying no heed to the quiet hours. We managed to somehow go to sleep and in the morning, we woke to a scene that took me back to my trips to India. Cows everywhere. Right next to our tent, in the road, meandering through campsites, nuzzling through trash. It's disappointing. This place could be exceptional. It has all the components: amazing scenery, close proximity to the city, space, privacy, etc. If it was maintained better (and de-cowed) I am certain it would be sold out every weekend all year long. As it is, moooooo-ve on. Sleep elsewhere, even if you have to tuck newspaper in your jacket and sleep in an alley. read more

If you're looking for a place to camp for the night with 1 car, and want to take advantage of the fact that you can walk from your campsite to one of the clam "islands" for gaper, geoduck, and other miscellaneous clams, this is the place for you! However, if you want a well maintained camp ground, with a picnic table, clearly marked campsites, a fire pit to roast marshmallows on, and some friendly staff, you need to look elsewhere. The staff here are not just unfriendly, but downright rude. They have prime real estate, and I understand that because of that, they can treat people like crap and some folks will still come back. From your campsite, you can walk out to the beach, dig for clams, fish, catch crabs, go kayaking, throw a frisbee, fly a kite, pretty much anything you could think of. The campsites themselves are in terrible condition, it was pretty much camping in a parking lot. Rocks and pebbles everywhere, no fire pit, no picnic table. When we asked the guy for them, after he yelled at us for parking in a walking path that wasn't marked, he told us if we could find an unused one and move it ourselves, we could have one, and that nothing is guaranteed. Another member of our group came late and was literally told "buh bye" when she asked if she could drop off her gear and park her car outside of the campgrounds. If I wanted to go clamming again, I definitely would not choose this location, even though it's nice and convenient, the piss poor attitude of the staff really puts a damper on an otherwise fun trip. read more

What is with the crazy bad reviews of this place? I've been here twice. Once in a tent and once in an RV. Admittedly, yes, RV camping is way more comfortable but the tent camping was also totally pleasant. Port-o-potties are always gross. What do you expect you'll smell from a pit of poop and pee? Roses? No. Poop and pee, to be exact. Anywho, people with dogs - this place is heaven. Off-leash running and swimming for your well-behaved pups (if you have a crappy dog, don't ruin it for the rest of us...keep it on-leash), a beautiful sunset over a sandy dune, beach walks, hikes over dunes, good-spirited fireworks after dark, free for all camping/parking. It's awesome. It was cold and windy, so prepare for that. And, make sure you bring firewood and maybe even your own fire pit or something because like one other reviewer pointed out, the fire pits are few and far between. There were plenty of dump-stations for RV's and the site is clean and nice overall. I'm pissed that some idiot with a misguided mission is trying to have this place shut down. It's one of a few beautiful off-leash campsites I've come across, and the only one with such a lovely set of natural assets. It is, as it always has been, up to the individual to be responsible in caring for the environment. Be mindful in where you throw your garbage (i.e., put it in the provided garbage cans), don't dump toxic crap anywhere, don't go seal-hunting, be nice to your neighbors, etc. In short, don't come for the luxuries of pristine portable poopers...come for the amazing and vast natural beauty that is Dillon Beach and be prepared to "rough it" a bit. read more

the good- beautiful sunset, easy access to the beach, great clamming. The bad- RUDE staff- very confrontational and disrespectful. One staff member even told one member of our group, that if she didn't want to pay for an extra site (since we had reached our 2-car max) , she could leave. Expensive- 55 bucks a night for two cars. Im pretty sure Motel 6 is cheaper. Inadequate parking- no overflow parking, and if you bring extra cars you have to park several miles away. If you are a day use visitor however, apparently you can park anywhere you want, including someone else's campsite. Lack of signage- bucket lids nailed to the ground with numbers written in Sharpie to mark campsites. Really? It was nearly impossible to find the site, day or night. Lack of fire rings/picnic tables- our group had 4 sites and one table and one fire ring. We were informed by management that NO ONE is guaranteed a table or a fire ring. My bad for assuming that we would be furnished with such basic campground necessities. I would not recommend camping here if you have a large group, unless you can squish all your people and belongings into two vehicles. There is no overflow parking and once you reach that 2 car-per-site limit, they won't let anyone else in , not even to drop off their gear. If you ask where to park, they'll inform you that there is no overflow parking and the nearest "safe" parking is several miles away. How convenient. i will not be back. It's sad that such a beautiful area is being run into the ground by rude and ignorant staff. If I could give this place zero stars I would, but Yelp apparently wants us to take pity on even the nastiest people, so Lawsons Landing, here is your 1-star. Im assuming either you have no access to the internet, or care little about what people are saying about your campground. read more

Nasty. Cows roaming over all the sites with cow poop everywhere. And baby that's just the beginning. Barely marked sites so close you wouldn't believe. In addition no one enforces the rules so music and partying go on all night. If you expect these yahoos to self monitor forget it. Dogs running around without leashes, people barfing in the bushes and loud music at a lot of campsites all day and all night. There are about 5 families with us who had been coming here for years. Never again. We can't believe what this place has been turned into. Generators running half the night, why have rules when no one enforces them? Barking dogs... I LOVE THIS PLACE !!!! I am a newbie to this trailer camping thing and everyone both staff and guests were so friendly and helpful. Since it was my first time camping here, (I am a long time local resident of Sebastopol) I was not familiar withe the "COOL" camping spots so it was hit and miss for me. Eventually, I found one that suited my needs and got lots of practice backing the trailer up ~~~~ Mike Lawson and family were very accommodating and helpful with small issues that came up for me. They have dedicated their lives to providing a retreat like this and although they are making upgrades as PERMITS are APPROVED ~~~ I hope it keeps its seaside charm and doesn't get too schwanky in the future. WILL be back !! me and the dogs and the KITTEN LOVED IT! Oh... for y'all with cow issues ... no more cows... ;( read more

This place isn't what it used to be. My family spent four nights camping here. So my perspective is from camp sites N7 and N8. When we first drove up were very disappointed. We are lucky that we got there early because our site didn't have a fire ring or a table so we were able to poach those pretty easily. There are burn rings everywhere because people are able to move the rings where they want and if there isn't a ring they want you to just burn on the grass so the site has a ton of chared areas. They have closed off massive portions of the area and are no longer aloud to camp in those areas. If you haven't been there since the change I recommend a day trip to check out the sites to see if your still interested in staying. On a positive note, the portapotties are actually pretty clean. The beach is still beautiful and isn't the worst place I've camped. read more

I came here wanting to pitch my tent with my friends and camp on the beach. I wanted to re-experience running at night in the sand and surf. I guess you get what you pay for, in this case $10.00 per night. I never made it to the beach. Our location was bad. We were pressed up against the rocks and dunes that serve as a natural break from the beach it is a landing hence the name of the campground. It was too crowded and noisy. The Recreational Vehicles abound and the run the engines constantly to power for electricity. They campers to the left and right of our site were too close. We could here their conversations and vice a versa. I tried to hike over the hill to get to the beach, oh how I wanted to make a communion with that water. I was lucky to make it back down to our site in one piece. I am still looking for my dream campsite along the beach. read more

If you like "parking lot camping" with smelly porta potties and disgusting, reeking, overflowing garbage bins...well this would be your place. Oh wait, I forgot the cow pies everywhere and dilapidated residential trailers that you have to drive through to get to your spot. I don't understand how anyone could possibly call this camping.... We stayed at the sea wall spots and that's all that it is a "spot" the sites are so crammed next to each other that it's just like being in a parking lot, only worse because you have to pay for it. These owners pack in the campers like sardines and could certainly afford to put in a decent restroom instead of the disgusting porta-potties that are conveniently located next to the smelly trash. I never used them, but could certainly smell them! This family owned business apparently feels they are above the environmental law and the garbage flows straight into the ocean. There are no camp hosts that monitor anything or anybody. I forgot to mention the music... Loud, dueling campers, music... And barking dogs everywhere! Won't be camping there again ever... The only thing good I can say about this place, is that the woman that checked us in was nice, perhaps the rude people that others have posted about, were sick that day. That's it.. I give this location two stars because it is very scenic. You'll have great views of the bay, sand dunes, mountains, etc. If you own a kayak, boat or inflatable don't hesitate to take it out. The main reason I will not give this location a 5 star rating is because the staff can be hit or miss. I've noticed that on some days you'll encounter the nicest people running the gate and on other days you can encounter VERY rude people (mainly the old lady who collects tickets.) So for anyone planning on visiting Lawson's Landing just be prepared for the hit or miss staff. If you just happen to run into any of the rude staff, bite your tongue and move on. No need to waste your energy arguing. read more

I've got mixed feelings about this place. We've had some REALLY great times here, and we've had some bad ones as well. They've recently raised the prices and instituted a reservation system, which they hadn't before but I believe was thrust upon them by the county or something similar. Some days, the staff are kind and helpful, others, they are complete jack-holes. The location is amazing! The drive in alone is gorgeous, and I'm in love with the Ocean, so there's that. It is tarnished by the fact that the campgrounds are often way over crowded now, and some campers are wildly disrespectful with the way the will move right through your campgrounds. A couple suggestions here would be to more clearly delineate acceptable walking paths around camp sites, and provide more facilities in more locations to avoid people having to walk through your site altogether, or have said facilities become unusable due to unsanitary conditions/overflow. I would love to give this place more stars, and would update my rating if they fixed some of the glaring problems that have arisen as of late. read more

Every time I stay at a private campground, I'm reminded that I'm more of a state campground kind of guy. The lady at the entrance gate was incredibly rude. We had two cars and said there was not enough parking for a second car. We even asked if we could pay extra for the second car - the answer was no. There was TONS of parking. Campsites are incredibly close to one another - basically separated by a rope or a log. Lots of rowdy people up late at night. On the other end of the spectrum, families screaming outside at 6:30am. I get it. It's a family place. But if you're an "in the woods" kind of camper, you'd be better suited elsewhere. read more

Update - the coastal commission is going after Lawson's Landing and making them do what they should have done years ago, namely, upgrade/regulate the place. While it's going to cost quite a bit of money to do what must be done here, there is a tremendous amount of potential to build an actual campground in a lovely area situated just a stones throw away from miles of lovely beach. Come on guys, it's 2009 - put some money back into the place and clean it up! read more

I stopped at this place to camp for one night while driving from LA to Portland and Seattle. This place was not my first choice but because I waited too long to make the reservation, this ended up being the only place available (I believe probably due to the horrible reviews it's received). As you can tell from the star rating, i was very pleasantly surprised. The drive to the beach was absolutely gorgeous. Coming from Southern California, it was very refreshing to see such green pastures and rolling hills. The lady at the entrance was very nice. They sell firewood there for about $6 a bindle and there's also a small market in town but they both close early (around 6 or 7ish) so get anything you need early or you'll have to drive further out. The campsites themselves were clean and very green. There were a few cows roaming around and they had dropped a couple of patties nearby. The campsites themselves are very clean and the place is so open and thanks to the breeze from the ocean the cows and their droppings don't make the place smell bad. They're more like yard decorations. We camped at one of the 'M' campgrounds. They're the closest you can get to the beach. The toilets are close by (which is very convenient) and located so that the breeze takes any smell away. I don't know how things were for the campsites located downwind of the toilets. We camped on a monday night so the campground was half empty. we had a big group next to us but they were nice. They played music till about 9ish but I didn't mind because it wasn't terribly loud or annoying music. I met a couple of them earlier in the day and they were nice people. On the whole it's been one of the best camping experiences I've had so far. It's possible that I just got lucky or that a lot of the people complaining about the site are just babies. Like the person who said, "One word , Shithole ! this place is disgusting . It is in a beautiful place then as you near you see all these dilapidated old trailers like you were in deli or Bangladesh". I think the city he's referring to is Delhi not Deli. read more

Note that this review is for tent/car camping. The vast majority of the people at this campground are in RV's. I only saw one other group in a tent when I was there. 2 friends and I went to camp at Lawson's Landing for 1 night last weekend. The location is beautiful -- right in the middle of sand dunes, and just a couple minute's walk from the beach. They have flushable toilets in a few locations and port-a-potties all around, along with water pumps. The place was quite full, even though their website boasts they have accomodations for over 1000 people. It appeared that a majority of the people there have their RV's parked there permanently, many have "yards" set up with fences, etc. One strange thing about this campground that we noticed immediately upon driving in was that there are a LOT of cows roaming freely through the campsites. I am not sure if this was typical or not, since I don't see it mentioned anywhere else. It was cool/funny at first, but proved to be a slight problem later. When we got there, we drove around for about 10 minutes looking for an available campsite with a picnic table. We couldn't find any available spots with tables, so settled for one without. Lots of the sites are missing picnic tables. When we got out of the car, we found that there were cow patties ALL OVER the place. we were able to find a clear spot to pitch the tent, but I had to drive up to the town general store to buy a shovel so we could clear the area so we wouldn't step in dookie after dark. There seriously was so much of it that we broke the (plastic) shovel trying to clear it all away from the fire pit area. Every time we put something down, we'd pick it up and realize there was turd on it. Cows only eat grass so their poop isn't so bad, but it starts to get to you after a while. If you want to party at night, this place is fine, as there were a lot of people doing that (teenagers, etc). One large group even had a megaphone and were lighting off fireworks till pretty late. This didn't bother me, but if you are going for a peaceful family-type spot, this may not be for you. Also.. one last thing that I thought was slightly unfortunate was that you don't really feel like you're camping that far from civilization here, as you can clearly see the whole town of Dillon Beach on a hill above the campground, and at night all the streetlights come on, etc. The beach, bay, and dunes are beautiful, but I don't think we'll be going back. read more

Expensive for what you get. Would go back only if I was certain of the weather and light crowds. On a nice day it's a very convenient location to experience Dillon Beach - which is awesome on a clear day. But as other reviewers have noted, this is not the place for a quaint, charming car camping experience. We drove in on a foggy fri afternoon with a little hesitation because you have to pass a few trailer camps on the way to the shoreline spots. And yes, the cows. The cows and raccoons were roaming and foraging for food in the early morning (so don't leave anything out.) Fortunately it wasn't packed but the majority of guests are driving huge RVs and trailers which means generators are running and it's going to be noisy as they spend the time setting up their trailers. People are friendly though so don't judge by perception. Also no bathrooms/showers. Just portable toilets which they cleaned regularly. Note also that this is way out in Tomales Bay so your not going to get very good mobile signal and you're phone will drain out fast. read more

Just spent four days at the place I love to camp at the most. However I will start looking at other places to go around the Bodega area. First of all I have camped at Lawsons for years. I arrive on Friday afternoon and need to get something for the store. I arrive and ask a question to the lady behind the register she was probably late forty's early 50 s and unhappy. She expresss with her attitude behind her register. I accepted that as it was late In the afternoon and some older folks get grumpy at a younger age. Saturday morning I arrive and grab a cup of coffee and asked a few questions to the same lady at the desk. Again she is grumpy again. So moral to the story is Lawsons landing needs to start respecting their guests because there are many more places with more pleasant people to greet their guests for the same price that offer more ammeneties and more pleasant staff. read more

My husband and I just took our RV here for the first time and we absolutely loved it!! The staff were super friendly and answered all of our silly curiosity questions. We camped along the sea wall and it was beautiful to say the least! There is so much to do from kayaking, clamming, crabbing, fishing to riding bikes, hiking, splashing in the waves and just relaxing in the sand. We will definitely be coming back with our children and decided to make a trip at least once a year on our own! read more

Made a reservation online this morning for tonight. We made it out there and the weather conditions were terrible and windy. The lady at the front wasn't overly friendly but friendly enough. We managed to finally find our campsite at the end where the sea wall is. I stupidly thought this was like beach front but it's not at all. It's a gravel parking lot basically. We pulled in, decided to drive to the beach and watch the sunset. We never went back to the campsite. It was so ugly and like a parking lot that we decided we would rather drive 2 1/2 hours home instead of camp there in our tent. At least we got to see the sunset? read more

It disgusts me that this place makes SO MUCH MONEY, and does not fix anything! The roads are ridiculous, like a 3rd world country! tHE ONLY THING TO CHANGE SINCE THE 80'S IS THE PRICE! The camp sites are super close together, and not private. iF YOU GO ON A WEEKEND, BRING EAR PLUGS, AND A BREATHING MASK! Bring $1,000,000.00 in case you forget anything, because the stores in the area charge so much for stuff it should be illegal! a $10 wal mart ozark trail sleeping bag will set you back $50 + tax if you need it! t Everything is at least double. Just a small site that you share with the cows, and RVs will cost 40/night on a week-day! (not sure about weekends) Whoever owns this property has a serious CASH COW, and there not giving it up to the state (to make it better), or fixing anything, or improving anything! Its the most ghetto nice area ever. The dock has been the same since about 1980, and is shakey. Rails are short, and not safe for kids!!! Some (actually most) of the trailers are permanent parked residents, and just look like something out of the 8mile movie in the trailer park. ( not a great beach scene) When we showed up there power was out, so they said we had to set up camp (and our chosen site was ok, and available), and come back at 5pm to pay (too lazy to right it down), then when we return at 5, they said our site was taken, and we had to move! They made us pay for 2 nights to make sure we would have it (bare in mind this was a wed. and they were only 10% full), so we pay for 2 nights @ 40/night. In the morning we decided it sucked, and wanted to leave by 7:30am, and they refused to refund the 2nd night. (I would understand if it was packed, but it was empty) -they made us pay for 2, then at 7:30 am said "sorry no refunds". We feel like we got jacked! Every time you enter, or leave you will have to get out of your car, open a gate, drive through, and get back out, and close the gate because of the cows! THEY CAN AFFORD A CAMERA SYSTEM TO MAKE SURE YOU SHUT IT, BUT CANT AFFORD A AUTOMATIC GATE!!!??? It pisses me off that this is a beautiful beach, and area, but because the owners are too greedy, and lazy, its a complete waste of land! IF YOUR READING THIS OWNER PEOPLE "SELL IT TO THE STATE, PLEASE, YOUR DEPRIVING THE PUBLIC OF A GREAT BEACH, YOUVE MADE ENOUGH CASH, RETIRE!" If you want to visit Dillon beach after dark, you must pay to camp here (40) and walk 1/2 mile back to the beach. This area is all Jacked up! Wasted potential.... I have been coming here since childhood for a reason. Yes the camping is rustic and there are cows and skunks roaming the campgrounds and the bathrooms are just port a potty's. I do enjoy the grassy campgrounds in the meadow and the views from the seawall. Most importantly if you are the hunter gatherer type where else can you have access to everything the sea has to offer clams,crabs,oysters,halibut,salmon,striper,shark and all other delicious fish while being able to watch protected California elk roaming the point Reyes reserve. Nowhere.. there is no place on the entire west coast quite like this. read more

Great place to camp and have fun with friends & family!!! We enjoy walking the beach during the day & campfires at night. Last time we went some of our friends & families ice chests filled with alcohol were stollen while we were sleeping. Only down side we have experienced, valuables should be locked up. read more

I feel completely lied to online about this campground. There are over a hundred acres and it was March 1st and there were about 10 people in our area and they were all directly right next to each other. I booked in January and it said full in most of the camping spots. So, I picked the one still available. Then it made it look like the waves were right over the sand dune from our camp spot. But, it was actually about 1/2 mile away. You had to hike up a dune and then down to a large dry creek bed then up another dune and finally get closer to the waves and beach. It wouldnt be an issue except that my husband had recently injured his knee and we were taking it easy. We have a farm so we are used to walking. There were people right next to us with a fire pit and combined 3 camp spots. They had a BIG bright light on a lot of the night. It was a huge disappointment. I wont go there again. Should have gone to Doran Beach. read more
