We had the Himalayan salted caramel cupcakes, eclairs, chocolate ball, and the orange ball. The cakes are super moist, and the frosting not too sweet. I was trying to arrange for a small wedding cake to be delivered to my friends hotel room while she was getting married. I was calling from a different state and just had to trust the process. Hilary was very helpful! She helped me pick out the right cake by telling me customer favorites. (Death By Chocolate) She decorated it beautifully and then delivered to the hotel. It was a Valentines Day wedding, but that did not seem to matter to Hilary. She treated me as if I were her only customer! The newlyweds loved the cake and said it was beautiful. I love their round treats. I have no clue what they are called but I only go there for those. The round treats are a layer of some cookie then some amazing cream and then a cherry and finally covered in chocolate. Don't tell my boyfriend but I'm starting to think that I would trade him so I could get a life time supply of those silly things. I do get cannolis cause they make good ones and I have not had any from another bakery. I recently got a slice of their red velvet cake and it was ok. I have had better. The bottom was more moist than the top. The cream cheese icing was ok but not cream cheese enough for me. I gave it four stars for the round things (I also posted a picture of what I recently got from there) and the cannolis.... I really do like the location. I like how it looks inside. The service is great. (I have gone about 5 times within a 3 year period) I have never eaten there. Everything looks supper clean. I do recommend it. So I am NOT a fan of chocolate cake, generally speaking... I would never buy myself chocolate cake and honestly I usually avoid it if it's at a party or wedding. But, it was my husband's birthday and we were in Monterey for the occasion and he LOVES chocolate cake. So I bought him a death by chocolate cake, because it's about him not me. It looked good, and I had read the great reviews here, plus it was cheat day for me so go big or go home... I decided to have a piece. And oh my, the raving reviews were not wrong! It was delicious! I ate multiple slices, I'm lucky my husband & 3 year old ate the majority or I would've over indulged. I highly recommend it for any chocolate fan, cake or not. I am so disappointed with this bakery. I have gone here for years. I went today and got the worst service ever. The woman was so rude. She also charged me for things that she didn't have in- a woman who bought a lot of things asked to use the restroom and the woman who worked there was so rude and said NO ! Then when she was asked if there's anywhere near there - the answer - NO ! - I have personally used the restroom at Layers within the last year. I will never go there again. Customer service is important and that is no way to treat customers - especially those who have been loyal customers for years !!!! O. M. Gosh. We hit on this bakery on a weekend visit, needed a cake for a big milestone birthday and wow, were we happy with the results. The cake was STUNNING - there is no better word. It was covered in a seamless layer of chocolate with beautiful flowers and a tasteful ribbon and inside was the most delicious, moist, decadent yet not over-done cake. Layer upon layer of excellent cake with a mocha butter cream that was perfection. The baby-cakes looked so delicious - we decided we need to trek back to Monterey just to try those. Prepaid to go in for a wedding cake tasting, nobody knew about my appointment when I came in. It turns out they had my box of tasters ready but I was supposed to leave and do my tasting somewhere else- with my bridesmaids- go somewhere else. We ate there anyways- perfect time for ANYONE from the bakery to come check on us- like a great opportunity to see how we are etc. nothing. Beware Fellow Consumers!! Very recently, I ordered a cake (200.00+) for a Company 20th Anniversary Celebration with Layers. Called Bakery 2+ times to go over all details of the cake decoration, flavors, date/location, delivery instructions, payment information to make sure the order would be perfect for our event! The event was perfect, thanks to Monterey Plaza Hotel, EXCEPT for one thing - our cake was never DELIVERED.....After several calls during the next 48 hours, I finally reached a live person - their voicemail does not allow customers to leave messages. I was told that my cake was never made, it was in the "PENDING FILE"... they said that we never gave them the credit card information, location of where the cake was to be delivered, or the date/time. (Thankfully I keep notes on all phone conversations of this type).... Three days later the Owner called me back. I explained the situation, and asked what she was willing to do to make up for what happened...., "Well, what do you want ME to do?"was the abrupt response I received... I suggested that maybe the bakery could actually make the cake we ordered, and deliver to our company. She asked where we are located, and then flatly refused, and then hung up. (we are on SF Peninsula). Bottom line, if you are contemplating using this bakery for an important occasion, JUST SAY NO! Cakes might taste good, but believe me, it is not worth the grief !!! read more

We chose a venue in Monterey for our August wedding, and using a list of vendors we decided on Layers. Oh so glad we did! Our design was a mix of classic and nerdy (we had a Star Wars/Han Solo/Princess Leia "I Love you, I Know" theme). Originally we'd only decided on a 3 tier cake with our colors of ivory and navy (quilted) with sprinkles (I love them) on the ivory tiers. Later I decided to surprise my husband with a grooms cake in the shape of Han Solo frozen in carbonite...come on!! The end result on the day was perfection. We were so pleased and excited to see the finished pieces, they really added to the day. Thank you to Hilary for helping me implement my vision. So disappointed I actually cried inside the shop after being shrugged off by the baker. We went in months in advanced to ask about cake tasting and the aloof teenage girls were like "sure, anytime, just come back" We go back and the baker only asks when our wedding is, goes in the back, and comes out and bluntly says she can't do our wedding cake. Never asked us what we wanted - which is actually really simple and easy, just said no, did a 180 and went back in the kitchen. I was bewildered by the abrupt response and complete lack of compassionate customer service you would expect from a small independent shop having to give bad news. This crazy cake joint's got all sort of Jimmy Cracker and Dough Pie but brother it's the Coco nutty Macaroons that keep me soft shoeing all around this flour hole. I'm a local, and most locals know Layers can put out some quality product. I enjoy many of their treats. I've had many friends who've been married in the area who really wanted to have their cake from Layers. NONE of them have. Problems abound! Rude customer service and they were charged for samples! My cousin was even asked if she could afford the samples! RUDE! A friend of mine was more than happy to jump through the hoops, but ultimately had to go elsewhere because the service was just too rude and unhelpful. Sad. read more

I've been to a few different places and usually you sit down talk to a baker and then taste. Not at this place we were given a box of cakes to try and sent on a merry little way. My husband to be and I went to a little spot by the water and dug in. The cake was super dry and the chocolate sample cake tasted like something from the frozen section of Costco. It tasted freezer burnt and I tried to be lady like but spit the cake out and couldn't even swallow it.
