Bought my daughter's first birthday cake from here and also sampled their creme brûlée cake and MY GOD the creme brûlée cake literally shook my whole world. I have never tasted anything so decadent!!! We got the Princess Cake from here and it was amazing. Not too sweet, moist, and the fondant wasn't too thick so it had a nice mouth feel. Picked up cake today at 11:30 am. The cake was appropriately cold and stayed that way, and it was not warm outside. At our event less than one hour later, the entire marzipan covering from the cake had melted off, which kind of put a damper on the celebration. There clearly was something wrong with the way the marzipan was formulated. The cake itself, was delicious. What was so disappointing was how rude the manager who we spoke to was when we called and she called us back. She was so argumentative and raised her voice. She said that once the cake leaves the bakery that it is no longer their responsibility. Really??! I mean look at this... marzipan when made as a fondant-type covering for a cake doesn't just melt like that. When we ate the cake it was still cold underneath. This marzipan has the texture of something that should be used as a filling. I would have expected better attention to detail and higher professionalism spending $90 for a cake. read more

I have been a customer of Layers for over 17 years. I always bought my Mother a Princess cake on her birthday every year. I have since expanded that tradition to include several close friends who love their Death by Chocolate cake. I just placed an order for two cakes from them to be picked up yesterday by two different people for two celebratory birthday occasions and Layers gave both cakes to one party. When i called them this morning, instead of apologizing, they try to blame me. Even though, I had informed them that I did not want a refund. I told them they baked the cake and delivered it. They proceeded to placed me on hold to discuss the situation with the baker and accidentally took me off hold and I heard his response. My mom got picked this cake for my dad's birthday and it was super delicious! The German chocolate cake was very moist and soft. The pecans and coconut are perfect and the chocolate frosting wasn't overbearing. It's difficult to find a good cake place around the Monterey County. Delicious and beautifully decorated cakes! I got my wedding cake with Layers back in August and I recommend them 100%. Hilary made the process so easy and was very responsive. To be honest, it was cheaper than I thought it would, and the cake was delicious and picture perfect. We initially wanted the marzipan cake with raspberry filling (so yummy!) but I wanted the semi naked cake look, which really couldn't be done with the marzipan. Hilary then offered to add almond flavor to the cake frosting and remove the marzipan so I could have the decoration I wanted without missing out on the flavor, and it came out great. Everybody loved the way it looked and tasted! They also worked with the florist to decorate the cake with flowers that would match the bouquet and my hairpiece. They took care of coordinating that part (one less thing for me to do!) and on the day of the wedding, they delivered a beautiful cake! I went to a Wedding of the Schemegels In Monterey at Memory Gardens over the weekend. I have never had a better marble cake with ganache frosting in my LIFE. I even asked for a 2nd piece. Good baked goods but a $4 cupcake floored me. Way too much for a small-frosted cupcake and they could not even provide a bag. Hey owners...buy some bags. Not TP so easy to find and the least you can provide with a $4 cup cake. And let the 2 counter helpers know that when you have 2 customers, you can help 2 people unless you pay them to watch one another work. Im local and there are much better goods and service to be had at a competitive price. $4 for a cupcake that slid in the car due to no bag. Layers cakes and sweets are delicious! We love coming here for every day treats, birthday cakes, and wedding cakes. They did lose a start for customer service. Their wedding team is fairly unresponsive and it gets messy when trying to order cakes. A few times in the shop I've dealt with rude employees and employees that visibly do not want to be there let alone help anyone. This is not always the case and they definitely have some great, friendly staff too. The consistency is just not there. read more

We have been buying cakes and bakery items from Layers for decades, and until my recent purchases they have all been outstanding. This month we had 2 occasions going on and I purchased 2 9" cakes which is smaller than we normally get. While they looked beautiful the cake was dry, and it was more than 60% icing. I thought the first lemon cake purchased was an anomaly, but the spice cake I purchased next was the same. I didn't appreciate having to put a $30. Cake in the trash. I'm not sure what has changed at this Bakery, it's a shame. read more

I ordered a Margarita cake for a friend's birthday, it came out very pretty and it tasted good. However, I was a bit disappointed by the layers of puff pastry and genoise, they were both a bit soggier than desired. It would have been nice to have slightly crispier layers of puff pastry, it would add contrasting texture to the cake. And the genoise, although it's supposed to be infused with syrup was a bit heavy handed, making the cake feel soggy and heavy (in flavor and texture) rather than moist. I've had their princess cake on a separate occasion and although it was good, the balance of creme and the slightly soggy genoise made the cake feel heavy as well. Perhaps I'm just not a fan of genoise, I like cakes to be airy and light to balance the sweet and rich flavors of a cake. Unsensational cakes, is more like it. I've tried multiple items here and have been mostly disappointed. Bakery lacks continuity; one day the crime brûlée pie is delicious. The next visit, yuck (soft, no crackle, just mucky). I think they keep their product on the shelves too long, the original sin IMHO. Bought a 38$ princess cake expecting that it would be delicious for that price. Nope. Just way oversoaked vanilla cake layers which have too much almond soaking liquid, therefore the cake itself is super moist and not delicate at all. Just gummy in the mouth and blah. It's glued onto the bottom cake board with white chocolate, which made it hard to cut. The raspberry jam is hardly there and yet also somehow still has the occasional seed. And the marzipan top is a quarter inch thick. There's nothing delicate or ethereal about it, which is the whole point of a pricesstarta. Other items we've tried have been underwhelming. The Italian rum cake is over soaked -- they clearly have a drizzle problem. Weird upside down cupcakes covered in chocolate might be other people's things but we found them too heavy on chocolate. Regular cupcakes and dried out. Overall, best to avoid this place, and save yourself some dough. read more
