My party ate here on our last day in OC for breakfast. First we made the mistake of walking to the doors in the front of the restaurant. We waited 10 minutes and was advised this was the pick up side only. After going to the side of the building, the hostess advised us it would be a 10 minute wait but we waited twice as long. The service was slow. We waited over 30 minutes to get our food and it was brought out cold. Part of my party ate at Laytons restaurants near the boardwalk and the menu had more of a variety. Supposedly, both locations serve the same food, but the menus are different. If both locations are the same, it should have the same menus. The menu prices are quoted for cash payment. If you use a card for payment, you'll be paying 3.5% more. I paid with cash but the restaurant has the smallest sticker on the bottom of menu that discreetly discloses this. Not an enjoyable experience for a party of 6. read more

I wish I could rate this place honestly. It's advertised as being open everyday from 7:00 am to 2:00 pm. Went at 8:00 am this morning and its closed. Called a little later and no answer. Hands down best breakfast we've had in OCMD . We've been coming here for many years and have tried a bunch of places . The only thing that sucked was they ran out of donuts . My little girl had her heart set on trying their donuts . It's our fault though we should have gotten there earlier . If you have kids I suggest the rainbow pancakes . Just had a great breakfast here. The entire staff was super friendly from beginning to end. Food was coming out fast from kitchen and everything I saw go by looked good. The pancakes were so light and fluffy - really, really good. The crispy bacon I requested was just right. We got donuts to go for our rainy beach weekend. So every year we stay at the Princess Royale which is right across the parking lot and every year we wonder why do we continue to support this business. They are an OC staple that has been around for decades which you will be able to tell from the outside and dingy inside. They did get new menus finally which are an upgrade from the home printer based work before. Nothing else has been updated including the horrible waitress that we get every year. This lady has no personality and truly does not care yet she is still a waiter. She didn't bring our food out, didn't refill coffee, and didn't check on our table not once. She also was blatantly irritated when we would request something like extra napkins. I had a delicious breakfast here. I got the hungry man's griddle which I highly recommend. It was not a greasy diner-style plate .. it was obviously made with a lot of care. The sauteed onions were cooked perfectly, tender and translucent, and the country gravy was real creamy and good. Fast service too. Had high hopes going into this place reading the reviews. The breakfast was typical diner food quality but for a lot more $$. The average breakfast may be around $13 but don't forget once you add almost $3 for an orange juice and $2.50 for a coffee that breakfast gets expensive quick. Between me, my wife, and a small order of rainbow pancakes for my daughters, our bill was over $50. Our bill consisted of $15 for 4 Oj's (2 were child size) and 2 coffees. Don't be fooled by the entrée prices, they gouge you with the drinks. Unfortunately the majority of places in OCMD need to make their money in 4 months so this kind of pricing has been typically experienced in other places as well. It's unfortunate because it starts to price out multiple family units from visiting the city as it is becoming increasingly unaffordable. read more

Walking by this restaurant I saw a beautiful outdoor dining area, me and my boyfriend were looking for something to pick up and bring to the beach for lunch. I've been to Layton's on 16th once and was a fan of that location, so we decided to stop at this one since it was on our way home. I got the two buttermilk pancakes with sunny side up eggs and bacon. I loved the pancakes, they were so fluffy like clouds and the bacon was crispy but not over cooked. We also got calamari, which was good too. I hope we went on an off day because the location on 16th street was so much better. The wait wasn't too bad, but the food we received was over cooked and burnt. There aren't many gluten free Breakfast options anywhere, much less off-season in OC, but Layton's was a huge hit. We went on Super Bowl Sunday morning, and had an awesome breakfast. The GF spouse and toddler enjoyed eggs, potatoes and Gluten free pancakes. I had a crab egg scramble that was quite tasty. But the service was phenomenal. Went for breakfast with my family. It was me, four other adults, one child and an infant. We decided on Layton's after we could not find another resturant. When approaching Layton's there was no where to park our two cars. The parking lot consisted of only five spots, which one being for handicap. So we parked at another location nearby and walked over. We were greeted by the hostess that I assumed was the one that all the reviews said was grouchy. I just took her as an old woman with a little bit of "timely" sass. She was very accommodating, especially when maneuvering the seats to place my infant in a safe area away from resturant traffic. 4 of us had pancakes and the other 2 had Belgian waffles. Let's just say that table talk was minimal. I had the grand slam which came with 3 pancakes, 2 meat choices (I had sausage and bacon), hash browns and eggs. The pancakes were light, fluffy and delicious. The sausage was spicy and juicy. The most delicious sausage I've ever had and the rest followed suit. Everyone enjoyed their meals and needless to say we were all stuffed. The reason why I didn't give 5 stars is because of the parking. Nobody wants to spend time hungry looking for a parking spot. Also, I had decaf coffee. The waitress kept refilling everyone who had regular coffee cups up and didn't refills mine. After a while she finally asked did I want more coffee and when I said yes she tried to fill it with regular. This would not have been a problem if regular coffee didn't make me sick. We walked here from our hotel Monday AM. Happy to find an outdoor eating experience we were sat immediately. But we weren't. We walked in, asked for a table and they pointed around the corner outside and said there was a table we could take. With not a heck of a lot of joy in their tone. Whatever, it was early I mean I hadn't had any coffee yet either so that's okay. Our waitress wasn't that great. Not perky or even happy to be helping us and we only saw her when she took our order, brought our food and check. The coffee was mediocre at best, watery and I ordered a cappuccino thinking that would be better. It wasn't. I ordered two eggs scrambled, with sausage and fruit. The best part was the fruit, real fresh cut up fruit which was an excellence change of pace from other fruit cups I've had at morning places. My eggs were good, and the sausage was alright. Too greasy and fatty for my taste but that's your gamble! My fiancé had the egg croissant sandwich and didn't really care for his either. If you're drunk/hungover and want some breakfast food I'd hit this place up. I'm sure it would have tasted fine. But if you're looking for a cute and amazing breakfast place. Very reasonable prices ($30.00 for breakfast for two including tax and tip). Lots and lots of food. I ordered the French Toast with Scrapple and Hash Browns. The taters had the perfect ration of crunch to soft. One very large, thick slice of scrapple: crisp on the outside and gooey in the inside. French Toast was very thick and good as well. My husband got one of the combos and I had to steal bites of his bacon and sausage. The sausage links were fantastic. I was not expecting them to be spicy and I love spicy. Bacon was thick cut and cooked just right. If I have lunch it is going to be later in the day because I can't even think about another meal after the mountains of food we got there. All in all we were very impressed. We will be making this a tradition on our trips to OC. Oh, and for all the reviews about the hostess? We went yesterday morning for breakfast. As soon as we rode our bikes in there was a nice man in the parking lot directing us to a place we could park our bikes and he helped us set the up out of the way. Although there was a line outside we were seated right away because I chose first available instead of waiting outside. We were a party of 4. Service was fast and very perky guy who was very nice to the little ones. Food was what I expected. We got eggs and pancakes, the usual stuff. When we left and headed back to the bikes the nice guy was there and asked if we enjoyed ourselves and even asked if we wanted some donuts to go! I said sure! We went to this place because it was close to our condo. It was ok to say the least. It was clean and they had a nice patio area for outside eating. The food on the other hand was just ok. I ordered the Eggs Benedict because it is my favorite breakfast. Well i was suprise to see a fried egg on a hard peice of ham and english muffin. Eggs Benedict is always a poached egg!!! Maybe it was just a bad day, but I usually love this place. My last visit during the car convention was not so great. My sister had egg shells in her scrambled eggs, and my burger was not good. It was a super thin patty. I should have known better when the waitress did not ask how I wanted it prepared. Hopefully this is not their new standard. We preferred to sit indoors since it was so hot outside, and they seated us 10 minutes later! I wouldn't mind rating this a three but my experience was just that. We had a party of 5 and our bill was around $40. We ordered the Burger, pancakes, and the adult chicken tender meal. The serve did not give us information about the meal, nor asked how I wanted my burger cooked. It was not a bad experience, but I wish the serve did a better job in including what is offered. Typically, fries are included in burger meals or up charged.. however here, potato chips are included and you have to ask for fries specifically.
