I'm just going to jump straight to the point and main attraction of my dining experience here. The Boeuf Bourguignon Burger. I quietly asked the waiter as a rather large group of us were sitting down for a birthday dinner of one of my close friends what his favorite dish was and if I should get the Bourguignon or the Le Baratin Burger. He said this was by far the better option. Oh, Man was he correct. It tasted like Julia Child was slaving away all day in her kitchen with a huge chunk of beef and whipping up a decadent bourguignon in her dutch oven just for me. Everything else from that night kind of just evaporated away. I didn't order any wine. I sampled a few of other people's dishes. But those hunks of beef slathered with a decadent and tangy sauce (almost like a pink hollandaise for beef) and smothered with a rich camembert cheese on a brioche bun. It started with my hands and turned into knife and forking it with the dripping meats falling apart into ribbons of glory. I can't remember the last time I've had a meal just as superior. I sampled a mussel or two. The sauce was delicious. Steph had had a salmon burger and was pleased. A couple of people ordered another star attraction dish: Chicken Cordon Bleu with mashed potatoes and honestly that chicken was juicy and out of this world tasting but still not as grand as my brioche of Julia Child's tender meat. I can't get over it still. All of this continued with chocolate molten cake, creme brulee, and a slice of an apple tart. I had a bite of each and each desert kept continuously tasting better. A delightful and calm evening and followed by a serious food coma. Apparently, on some nights Baratin turns into a huge dance party around 10pm but for some reason it was just a tame summer night on our visit. read more

I came here on the recommendation of a friend and sadly was really disappointed. First our reservation was at 7pm but they didn't seat us until almost 40 minutes later because they had a huge group of 42 people and apparently they "refused" to get up. This is kind of ridiculous when the entire restaurant seats about 40 (so yes they took over the whole place ...) and they didn't try to give us anything to help keep us around. I think also this place was supposed to be a really delicious, well priced and great french bistro. It really wasn't any of that. I thought the prices were ok, but the cheese and meat board was *just* ok. The waitresses and waiters were really inattentive and for the most part seemed overwhelmed at the job of staffing a restaurant. The food was pretty mediocre overall. The burger was really thick but too salty and overcooked a bit. The seared foie gras was good once it came out but again overpriced compared to other places in NYC I've had it in terms of taste, presentation and size of dish. The beef was tough. My friend ordered from the prix fixe menu and was just as disappointed. Her house salad was limp and bland and kinda sour? Her cordon bleu was overdone and salty. I have no idea how the food is but the ambience and staff are dreadful. We had a reservation which the restaurant claimed was only available at 5 pm. We showed up on time. There was a screaming crowd in the front bar section, and I mean screaming. Disco music at full volume. We inquired about the noise and they said it would quiet down soon, this said with a bit of a smirk. The restaurant section of the restaurant was completely empty. This neighborhood gem has everything you want in a good restaurant: close,cozy and romantic with a fun vibe and most importantly, tasty food and good service. French accented waiters don't hurt either. Love the Francophile decor: soccer jerseys, empty wine bottles, cook books, wine cases oh my! Leon started with a Salad Lyonnaise: of course he loves frisee with bacon and a side of Al green. For me this salad was the perfectly soft cooked egg ( yes, I ate it!) . I accidentally ate a lardon in the salad. I guess I see why people love that thing. Even though this is a 5 star review there was a minor complaint...the bread wasn't great. However, Leon ate a lot of it. Why People why... there's so much great bread in nyc. My dinner started with a nice Bordeaux that is served by the glass,the second one I ordered turned out to not be that and I didn't care for it. oh well. Took a friend for her birthday. Very nice small very French place. She had the escargot's and I had the pate. Both were great and thought she was going to lick the plate. She then had coq u can and I had the steak frittes. We both licked our plates clean . We then shared the mousse a must have. I must say the only thing I bad I could say is the glasses they used for wine. My friend had a Bellini and I had a glass of wine and both came in white wine glasses. KenScale: 8.0/10 While French cuisine is probably not at the top of my wish list on any given night, I do have the craving for straightforward and satisfying bistro food every once in a while. Le Baratin, located in Greenwich Village, was one place I've had on my radar and I recently visited on a Friday night. At first glance, it felt more like a café that draws crowds for wines and coffees, but by the end of my meal, I found that they weren't playing with the soulful French bistro food coming out from the kitchen. There is no "modern bistronomy" type food at Le Baratin. It's a collection of all the French classics that you can think of. Obviously that doesn't necessarily mean the food is dull; actually, the food here has that hearty touch that makes you feel good. Salade Lyonnaise looks simple with frisee lettuce, bacon and poached egg but it still pulls off a very delicious salad. Mussels with parsley, shallots, garlic and white wine also was a winning dish, and my dining companions couldn't stop dipping bread on the flavorful white wine sauce. Sautéed skate in a light lemon, butter and caper sauce was cooked nicely, and the black truffle oil gnocchi topped with mushrooms was addictively good, with rich but not overpowering flavor of the pasta dish and silky smooth texture. It was definitely one of the best gnocchi dishes I've tried in NYC. The steak frites came in the form of NY strip steak with pepper bordelaise sauce that came with pommes frites; I liked the medium rare texture of the meat that worked harmoniously with the pepper sauce. Coq au vin, another classic French chicken dish in red wine sauce accompanied by mushrooms and various vegetables, was also very solid, with rustic touch of the dish that made us finish it within minutes. For desserts, we had decadent crème brulee and warm apple tart, both simple-looking yet decadent dishes with sweet flavor that I enjoyed very much. Getting a reservation wasn't that difficult at Le Baratin, but the restaurant started packing with people also at the bar and became more like a small festivity as the night went on. I noticed how most of the diners spoke and looked like French, which is probably a good sign that this restaurant is doing its job. There is full bar with French-oriented wine list, which I feel needs a bit more work, and the restaurant could do a better job with services (it felt a bit distracting according to one of my dining companions). Le Baratin is a sleeper among French bistros that have started making a comeback to the NY dining scene after getting shoved aside by New American, Italian and Spanish cuisine. If you're in for a classical French fare, this is definitely a place worth visiting. read more

Went here the other night at the spur of the moment with a friend. Obviously, we made no reservation but they were nice enough to offer us a table with the condition that we only had an hour before the table would be occupied. That was fine with us. We both ordered a glass of wine (rose for me and red for my friend). They were great selections. My friend is super picky about his red wine so to get an acknowledgement is a great feat. Then we ordered the charcuterie platter that came with two types of meat and a pate. The pate was divine! The two meats were really good too. For our mains, I ordered the coq au vin and my friend got the skate. The dish came a little different than what I had imagined - I was thinking the french style but I guess the belgium style is a little different. It was more stew-y like and very rich. It was really good. I didn't try the skate but my friend said it was also very good. My friend originally wanted the Beef bourguignon since the last time he was here (about a year ago), he was in love with it. Sadly, I guess they took it out of the menu so he was a little disappointed. The place itself is very tiny and super packed. But the waiters are friendly and the atmosphere is very cozy. I would love to stop by again especially for that charcuterie platter. I love those platters. Btw, this place is more Belgium food rather than French. Maybe I was there on an off night, but we really didn't enjoy much about this restaurant. A friend and I made a reservation for a Saturday night at 7p. The decor is cute and very much like a French bistro, with many interesting things on the walls, sport jerseys on the ceiling, even red and white napkins. The place was nearly empty, but patrons were all cramped together into one area...and in bistro-style, you are nearly touching. So that was weird. Waiter not welcoming, not rude, but not at all pleasant either. He had a French accent, but the waiters in France are much nicer, in my experience! Anyway, onto the meal. Tried to get Dubonnet aperitif, but they were out. My kir and my friend's Lillet were refreshing, however most of our food was bland or just bad. The bread was a big disappointment for a French restaurant. Not fresh, and not particularly good either. My pate tasted like supermarket liverwurst. My friend's baked brie presented nicely, but it was overly runny and lacked flavor. Our entrees were OK--my friend's truffle gnocchi much better than my salmon, which had NO seasoning...not even parsley, nothing--no sauce, even. There was a ranch-style dressing in a small cup, which was an odd pairing. The cheese plate had really small squares of cheese with about a teaspoon of confiture and 5 grapes...and the waiter just plopped it down with no explanation of what cheeses were there...but seemed like very standard blue, brie and munster-style which again, tasted like supermarket-quality. Prices are reasonable, but portions are small, too. We felt rushed through our meal, with the waiter trying to whisk away our plates before we were done--not like the French at all. Croque Madame - AMAZING. I've had croque madames that got way too gross and oily after a few bites, but this one was made perfectly. Quiche Lorraine - also super good...flaky puff pastry multi-layer crust with a filling bacon quiche. The sauteed potatoes on the side are also very flavorful. Le Baratin Burger - I didn't have any of this, but my brother in law said it was amazing. The portion was pretty big too! Brioche French Toast - oh my god, best french toast I've had in a while. They were thin strips (piece of toast cut in half) that were caramelized on the outside/crispy/toasty, and creamy on the inside...to die for! My friend and I ate dinner at Le Baratin on a Monday night. When we got there at 6pm it was pretty empty, by the time we left, a bit after 8 there wasn't an open seat in the house. A carafe of water that they attentively fill up was a very welcome sight on a 90+ degree NYC day. We started off with the salmon tartare. It was served with a small salad and a few chips. The tartare was good, but a bit too lemony for my taste, almost like a ceviche. My friend had ordered the coq au vin. The chicken was perfectly prepared but it was the really the sauce that he loved. You could tell by the amount of bread he constantly dipped into it and the expression of joy he had afterward after consuming. I went with the moules marinieres. The mussels were nice and fresh but there is something very homey about the shallots, garlic, and herb concoction at the bottom of the bowl just waiting to have that crispy bread dipped into it. After my plate of empty shells was starting to get to be a bit too much, the wait staff changed it out for a new empty one, something you don't see all the time. I lived in Paris, early in this century. I had visited many times before that, so I know what constitutes un bon bistrot. I had an indoor table at Le Baratin on saturday. The place nailed it. Le Baratin appreciates the classics, which it lists separately on the menu. Its soupe a l'oignon, coq au vin, and moules mariniere could compete with Parisian renditions. I almost never leave Yelp reviews, but in this case I feel strongly motivated to do so. The short version: great food, but so, so loud! A couple of days ago I was talking with the nice young man I'm seeing right now - we're both grad students - and we decided to splurge on a nice restaurant for our fifth date. Neither of us have ever been to a French restaurant before, and we were very excited to try something more sophisticated than the Chinese takeout or Halal cart food that makes up our usual diet. This was very much a special occasion sort of thing. I wasn't able to make a reservation until 9:30, but figured we could get drinks beforehand and make a nice evening of it. Well, it so happened that the date of our reservation fell on the same evening as the Great Blackout of 2019. I was coming down from Harlem, he was coming from Queens, both of us had enormous transit difficulties. I wound up walking all the way from Columbus Circle because I couldn't get a train, bus, or cab to take me to the Village. By the time I arrived at the restaurant, I was sweaty, starving, and eager for a glass of wine. I was very excited for this meal! To my surprise, instead of the quiet, romantic French restaurant I'd been hoping for, we walked into... a club. A club where you can order Steak Frites and Charcuterie, to be sure, but a club. The music was so loud that conversation was essentially impossible (and we're both grad students - we love to talk). When I asked our waiter whether the music could come down by, oh, 20 decibels or so, he kindly explained that people were here to party, and he'd have 30 people asking him to turn the music up if he honored our request. I get it - but I was disappointed! The crowd got rowdier as the evening went on: at one point someone threw their napkin into the air, which hit my head on its way down and then landed on my plate; people began to dance a conga (in this very tiny restaurant!), knocking into my chair, while I ate. The food and wine were good. I don't have a sophisticated palate by any means, but the cheese board was excellent, as was my date's steak in pepper sauce - by far the best thing we ordered. I enjoyed my beef tartare but probably would have preferred a smaller portion as a starter rather than making it my main course. If I were going to come back, I'd come earlier in the evening, before the partiers arrive. I can't imagine wanting to spend hundreds of dollars to get wine drunk and dance in a tiny restaurant, but if that's what you're after, you can do it here. But if there are any young people strapped for cash looking for a special occasion place for a date - come early, or try somewhere else! read more

I would never come to this business again. I have been sitting outside for over 20 minutes and the waiter walks by every few seconds and completely ignores us . At least acknowledge us but not even that. He even went to the table right next to us and just ignored us. I called him over he looked and kept walking. Then he was inside joking around with what seemed to be another coworker and completely ignoring us. Horrible. So now it's been over 30 mins he just walks by us and doesn't even bother to ask or tell us anything. The worst service in the world. read more

To be quite honest, I wasn't a huge fan of this place. While the service and ambiance were both amazing, the food was sub-par at best. FOOD: My opinion on this restaurant may be slightly biased as I am a vegetarian, and there were not many options for me to order. I ended up having the three cheese gnocchi sans bacon, and while the presentation was stunning (the cheese came out bubbling!), the taste was pretty bland. AMBIANCE: Le Baratin had the cute vibe of a French cafe, and it was casual, but also a good option for a low-key, chill dinner. I have to say the music taste was slightly off, as they stuck to Top 40 hits rather than something French, which would've felt more appropriate. SERVICE: We were a large group of 12, and I was happy with how are table was prepared when we arrived as well as how we are promptly attended to throughout the meal.
