I was at this French bistro a while back with one of the many groups I attend dinners with. The inside was a tad dark, and the people were friendly. I liked the vibe of the spot, with the atmosphere being surprisingly festive, though thankfully, our meal finished before a large group of people came in and made it too loud. To drink, I thought about getting a cocktail, but they have a nice selection of wines, and I got the $18 Sancerre, which was tasty. I skipped an appetizer and went with a main dish and a side. My main was the excellent $36 Coq Au Vin, consisting of a half chicken in a red wine sauce with mushrooms, carrots, pearl onions, bacon, and potato. The chicken was cooked down wonderfully, being fork-tender, and for being half a chicken, the portion was very decent. While not the richest wine sauce, it was still very flavorful without being overly salty, even with the pieces of pork scattered throughout. The rest of the vegetables were also cooked down well, but still retained some texture. My side dish was the $11 Pommes Frites/French Fries, which is also available with parmesan and truffle for $2 more. The portion was generous for a bistro, and they were crispy with enough salt. They were perfectly fine. Other entrees enjoyed included the $27 Salmon Burger, the $25 Le Burger Baratin, one of the mussels, and, I believe, a pasta. My dessert was an outstanding version of Tarte Tatin, listed as a warm apple tart, for $10. There was also some ice cream on the side to pair with the tart. This is easily one of my favorite French desserts, and most places have something wrong with it. It's either too sweet, the apples aren't cooked down enough, or there isn't enough pastry. This had none of these issues, being perfectly prepared. I would recommend it heavily. Not many complaints here. Very tasty main and an excellent dessert with a fun atmosphere. Came here for brunch and was surprised the restaurant was practically empty, but figured I'd give it a shot still. The owner was super friendly and helpful, and the restaurant is really cute. I had the burger and fries, which was tasty but didn't really have anything special to it. I think the prices are a bit high for what you get, but maybe I just got the wrong thing. read more

I wish I could write a review of the food but sadly, we never made it through the door as as they had made a reservation for 20 people in which 40 people showed up and they took our reservation away and gave it to the 40 people that showed up. so needless to say a reservation for six people got eaten up by the party that they had just brought in. They gave out all of the reservations for 530 to this random party that just showed up, we were never even able to get through the door the owner of the restaurant came out and tried to brutal attempted an apology which we did not take very well. If you wanna go get food, go to a restaurant that will actually let you in the door instead of a restaurant that'll take your reservation and give it away to 20 other people and never let you even try the food, absolutely ridiculous. This restaurant sucks. Wouldn't even go to try the food let alone go talk to the people ever again very rude. Very disrespectful. Do not go. (More so they offered to make us another reservation at a different restaurant down the street. First off the food was exquisite the photos don't do it justice . The truffle was amazing so was the service and the ambiance was so intimate and cool . I've never been to an authentic French restaurant that felt like a true European experience . If you are curious , please go abeg . You really can't go wrong . Chill, perfect brunch spot. I came here with a friend on a Saturday noon and there were quite a lot of seats so didn't have to sharpen my elbows to get a spot thankfully. I stopped in here for a second and had an extremely bad experience at this bar that left me shocked and uncomfortable. My friends and I walked into this very packed bar to use the restroom, but the male bathroom attendant stopped us and refused entry, saying we couldn't go in without a table or drinks. The music was so loud it was hard to even understand him, and the supposed policy wasn't posted anywhere. When we asked for clarification, he became visibly frustrated, even though we were just trying to understand. Since we were denied restroom access and couldn't get a drink at the crowded bar, we decided to leave. As we were walking out, my girlfriend jokingly lifted a glass of water to show my friend--just being playful--and the attendant suddenly shoved her. Shocked, I told him, "Don't put your hands on her," referring to my friend, who he was also trying to push away. We started to walk off, but he then grabbed me, yelling and shoving me again. This was completely unprovoked, aggressive, and inappropriate. As a woman, being physically grabbed and shouted at by a male employee was terrifying and unacceptable especially as we were already following his direction and leaving. There is absolutely no excuse for a staff member to touch or assault a guest, especially over something so harmless. The situation made me feel unsafe and completely ruined our night. Other guests looked stunned and uncomfortable, stepping aside to let us leave. Would not recommend this place. read more

But since you two are well into middle age, you might prefer a table along the back wall -- right next to the swinging doors to the kitchen. That way no one walking by can look in the window and see you." Okay, that's not what the host actually said. But that was the message as he led my friend and me to what is hands-down the worst table in the restaurant. We asked to sit at a different table. Request granted. We each ordered: steak frites, medium rare. At $34 - okay, not steakhouse prices. But you do expect a certain level of quality. When they arrived, we cut into them. They were tough, tasteless and grey on the inside: medium well done. The loud, pulsing music (more appropriate for a spin class) became more annoying with every bite. Finally, I caught the host's attention. "You might let the chef know that medium rare means pink on the inside," I said. Sudden solicitousness. With great apology, he offered to replace the steaks. We agreed to split one. He brought us second glasses of wine on the house. The replacement steak arrived, divided between two plates. The outside was nicely charred; the inside cool and blood red. I suppose the chef was taking no chances. My friend and I lingered over our second glass of wine, until the host told us that unfortunately he needed our table. Au revoir, Le Baratin. The environment here is what sold me on this place. Party of 9 came maybe an hour or so before closing and was greeted with open arms. A few of us had no idea of what to go after and our server gave us many recommendations based off our preference. The music was lively as well as the workers. These workers definitely have been together for some time but dancing between the door jams, at the bar, even outside for a smoke break was amazing. Lots of laughter and smiles for sure at this location. Maybe my experience was lively as these workers were close to being off but also showed they enjoy working together as a team. This is a hidden gem that's not really all that hidden. We've stepped into this French bistro a few times now that we are in a close walking distance and have never had a complaint about the food or service. We went during a France World Cup March and still the service was top notch. The burgers are big and messy but delicious but the french onion soup bites are a MUST. Unassuming non pretentious French restaurant. Had a birthday brunch on Sunday there with a larger party and had a fantastic experience. Steak tartare was good. Truffle flatbread and French onion flatbread great. But the Bourguignon Benedict is what will bring me back. The side of potatoes was fantastic as well. Was one of the best brunch dishes I've had in quite some time. Service was amazing. The nicest and funnest French waitress truly made our experience. Anything we needed came out within minutes. Our glasses were kept filled and our stomachs full. We even put in a music request that had the entire place feeling like we were at a Donna Summer concert, right there in the West Village. Vibrant bistro in the village. Lots of great people watching. We were seated at a table in the front of the restaurant, adjacent to the bar. The host offered us a table in the back, but told us that we had to leave within a certain amount of time. We didn't get the hint. The front of the restaurant is very loud. The bar gets intermittently crowded. I spent about half the meal with a woman's butt 12 inches away from me at eye level. The service was good. The best thing that we had was a yummy bottle of Pomerol. It was spendy, but the mark up was very reasonable. The food was solidly OK. The foie gras was overcooked. The mussels were bland, but the sauce and well cooked frites made up for it. The duck, filet mignon and pasta al la vodka were very good. The steak frites were OK. Indoor dining - round 2 - just in time for vday! My guy made reservations for vday at 9pm - I like that we're able to sit indoors since it was closed but the restaurant was not following the 25% capacity protocol - it was more like 90%. (One star off for not following Covid guidelines) The staff had their masks on. The music was popping - one of the best song list I've listened to in a restaurant. People were dancing and vibing! There were at least 2 celebrations going on and everyone would clap and cheer. One girl bought shots for everyone. It was all very enjoyable and fun but at the same time - I remember that COVID is still very much a thing. I'm glad that we were seated a little further away from everyone because the restaurant is quite small and as I've said before - at 90% capacity so social distancing was not a thing here. Food - French food is always amazing! For appetizer we had the foie gras creme brûlée (amazing!), escargots (de-shelled), and croque moniseur bites. For entre we shared the beef bourguignon. The food was delicious. Wine - we asked for a red sweet recommendation - similar to a Malbec. I forgot what we got but it was delicious. Very cute place. I happened upon it completely by accident. The people I interacted with immediately were the host, the waitress - Katya, and the bartender - who I believe is Armand. They were really sweet. I enjoy going to places where you are greeted the moment you enter. It was a very welcoming environment. If you are looking for a place that has a European bistro type feel, this is definitely it. It's ideal for solo date nights, actual date nights, and even groups - I saw all three, and granted, it's not a large place. Now when it comes to food, I may need to return to try an actual meal, but what I had was simply the Pommes Frites with Parmesan cheese, and it was delicious. I eyed a meal next to me which was a steak, and that looked absolutely delicious. They also seemed to be a hit for their mussels. The ambience itself as I mentioned, gives a bistro feel. Lots of sports shirts on the ceilings and walls, and you may spot a few trinkets indicative to South of France. The later was what actually drew me. Haha I should mention, the entrance is very tight. People will bump into you nonstop. But there is a bit more room in the interior. Nonetheless, it is certainly a place worth giving a try. read more

We love this restaurant for many reasons, but we have criticisms of it as well. We have spent over $500 here in less than a month, but on a return we were less than pleased to be rudely hustled off our table and told "there is a 2 hour limit on each table ", when no such (ridiculous) rule was explained before. The waitperson who did so was very much less than pleasant, which was a contrast to the friendly service we had enjoyed up till then. We told her we would like to have a liqueur before we finished and were (again, rudely) told "No, please leave the table - we have other customers waiting". We said "Ok, we'll go to the bar then" only to be told "The bar is full". Well. F*** you then. As I told her- if we had known we'd be treated like this, I would have halved the (generous) tip. Pay attention, guys - your popularity can easily evaporate if you don't treat good customers well. Also, tell your chef - don't overcook your moules for the Moules Marinière. They are only supposed to be cooked just until the shells open and be plump, not shriveled little overcooked buttons in the shell. read more

Find out Tartine is super closed indefinitely till indoor dining returns. Scramble to find a new place. Stop by one place; do you have availability at 5:30? The person laughs in my face. "ok understandable." Repeat eight times. Get laughed at eight times. Walk by Le Baratin. Ask the same question. Response, "no, but I'll make a table for you." The guy legit goes inside and gets a table and puts it inbetween some other tables. I (not wanting to push my luck, but gotta) ask about heating. The guy pulls out a small propane tank with two headlamps on it. I was floored. The level of service this guy was offering, I just haven't seen in too many places. We sit down and enjoy dinner and drinks. The food was fantastic. The drinks were not. They didn't have two of the three drinks we asked for and the drink I did get tasted like alcoholic cough medicine. But I didn't care. 1) This guy really did me a solid. 2) the food was great. 3) I was having a great time with great company. 4) This heater thing he pulled out that looked like he put it together from parts at home depot was legit the hottest thing I've ever sat next to. I came here for a friend's birthday and loved the quaint decor - I felt like I had walked into a bistro in France, and the ambiance was the perfect, intimate spot to catch up with some girlfriends. I ordered the Moules Au Rockefort, which comes with mussels cooked in roquefort cheese, cream, and pepper and served up with a side of crispy (and addictive!) fries. The portion size of this dish was VERY generous; it didn't seem that big at first but halfway into it, I felt like I was tackling a mountain of mussels! Le Baratin is an adorable but unpretentious French bistro that turns into a loud and fun watering hole in the evening. My friends and I were wandering the area during COVID, looking for a place to grab a drink, and just stumbled upon Le Baratin. We grabbed a table outdoors, and witnessed the party unfold! During the couple hours we were there on a Saturday night, the place turned into a casual eatery/bar to a full-on party with people dancing on tables/chairs and loud singing in the street. We ordered cocktails and desserts, both of which were very well-made. The Fizzy Orange is great for when you want some sweet and not too strong. Went here with a few friends for dinner. The food was great and the vibe was cool. I will say that we were u formed that there was another reservation at 9. However, we were extremely rushed throughout the entire dinner. The second we put our forks down our waitress came and took them away from us. The staff made us uncomfortable and intimidated as they continued to rush us and were extremely rude. A little bit before 9 our waitress put a barrier table next to us to block us and get us out and then laughed about it was a customer ( who was a famous person). Never felt inclined to leave a review for a resturant whether it's good or bad because all restaurants have bad days. However, we were so incredibly uncomfortable and embarressed by the situation. Best Father's Day dinner ever! I have a good friend who's been telling me about this place for years and I finally went last Sunday. A lovely establishment. A little disappointed in the complementary bread basket - it was certainly not up to par with the rest of their French cuisine (and I'm a huge sucker for a bread basket). So don't waste your tummy space on that! There aren't many vegetarian options on their menu, but that being said, my medley of 3 sides was absolutely delicious. I loved each one with a burning passion. I very easily became a member of the clean plate club. We were escorted out of our seats for the next reservation, which is always a bit of an odd experience, but I'm happy for them that they are busy and doing well! Super authentic French food!!!! Totally reminded me of being in Paris. Small quaint place in the west village and can get packed- come early. I came around 630-7 and was seated pretty quickly but an hour later there were packs of people waiting. My friend had the salad with goat cheese and loved it! We got the pate to share with the table and then for my entree I got the steak tartare. Portions are decent sized! Seriously everything is super French and reminds me of Paris. First thing they told our party when we sat down was, "everyone HAS to order entrees", so we knew right from the start it was going to be rough. Good luck trying to talk to others at your table, they decide to absolutely RIP this jungle house/edm music that makes you feel like you are on an African safari ride at Disney. All in all, it's got signed jerseys on the walls, so you think it's a sports bar, then there's no TV's. It's got a French menu with the cheapest legit entree being 30$. Then you don't get to talk due to the rave level volume inside. Only upside was the food was solid, given it was horrible portion size.
