The croissant--this is the only place aside from Un Petit Je Ne Sais Quoi in Dupont that has an authentic French croissant (Je Ne Sais' is better FYI). But on top of what Je Ne Sais Quoi does, this place has a full menu, and a full bakery and coffee shop. It's a little bit pricey, but that's what it takes to stay in business when you make things from scratch and are a one shop operation. This is a great part of the community and I love coming back to it even tho I don't live in Columbia Heights anymore. read more

Great addition to Columbia Heights. A good friend works here, so I stop in often. The owners are very friendly and have a great story. Baguettes are delicious, chocolate croissants are right on, and tiramisu is divine. They offer samples on a daily basis and sometimes give out freebies. Nice outdoor seating area as well. While the croissants are great, we just had the most miserable breakfast ever. Freezing cold eggs on our sandwhiches and they consistently get the "no cheese" wrong on my husbands sandwhich. Simple request that they never get right. He has even spoken to the owner. Beware too coffee is dangerously hot and burnt taste. For a french place coffee should be better. Nice of them to give our money back but I doubt we will be back. Sad too because we want to like the place. When I complained no empathy like they didnt care. I'm really excited about this business. I've tried a variety of items thus far - savory croissants, pain choclat, brioche, one of their more cookie like pastries (lemon?), and foccacia. I do agree with many of the comments posted - a bit slow at the register, the decor could use some more coziness (maybe curtains over the windows, more seating in difference combinations, flowers pots or something on the table?) and some nice background jazz music would be great.... however, the food is delicious! I popped into Le Caprice this evening on my way to a work event. Full disclosure--it's right next door to my building, making it super convenient for me. I ordered an ACT (avocado, cucumber, & tomato) sandwich and an iced coffee. The sandwich wasn't anything special, and wasn't particularly worth the $7 it cost, in my opinion. The avocado was brown, bordering on black, even though I watched the girl slice it open herself and the cucumbers were nearly as thick as the bread itself. I will note that the bread, which I believe was a focaccia, was decent, although bland. The coffee was coffee, and definitely wasn't a cold brew, but rather normal coffee that had been cooled down in a refrigerator. Perhaps their pastries are the redeeming quality of this place; I sampled a croissant that it was flaky and quite delicious. Overall, it was alright, but nothing to write home about. I feel like it subsits on customers from nearby apartment buildings, who need their quick caffeine fix. To be quite honest, I'll likely visit again out of sheer convenience sake. Update: Went in the other morning for an egg and cheese bagel, which was supposedly $4.99 ( ~ $5.50 after DC restaurant tax). The cashier then tells me that my bagel will cost over $6.00 ?! I know it wasn't a huge difference or anything, but it still makes me feel like something odd is going on at this place. I love Le Caprice: the baked goods, the owners, and the atmosphere. In the winter, you can sit inside and enjoy your selection of the variety of croissants and cup of coffee/tea (I highly recommend the cardamom black tea), or grab a baguette to take home. When it's warmer, you can sit outside and enjoy catching up with a friend or people watching. It truly has a feel of a European cafe. Great pastries. So far I've had a fruit tart and a chocolate croissant. They both were amazing. It's a little expensive though, not too much more expensive than getting something sweet at Starbucks though and they are definitely better than Starbucks pastries. I don't think anyone that works here has ever had a sandwich before. Or maybe an alien described a sandwich to them and they tried to recreate what they imagined it to be. I got the Goat Cheese Prosciutto sandwich, and it consisted of two soft, squishy pieces of cold bread, one and a half tiny slices of room temperature prosciutto, and a couple dabs of soft goat cheese. No lettuce or arugula, no onion, no crunch, nothing else. It looked like crap. I don't know how you can look at that after you make it and think it is acceptable to sell to the public for $9. read more

Le Caprice pretends to be French. There is little French about it apart from the patisseries which are good. For the rest, the breakfast is slightly above McDonals's, and if you want to sit around dog poop, have breakfast on the patio. Don't bother asking the waiters, they clearly don't care. This bakery opened up in my building and I have not been able to resist going in almost every morning. They have the BEST croissants I have ever had (I am eating one right now). They also have amazing pain au chocolate, tiramisu and Quiches. The people there are incredibly friendly and efficient. In the morning (because it is so popular), there is sometimes a small line, but whenever there is, they always bring out samples for people to try. Consequently, this morning I tried the most decadent chocolate cake with strawberries. In conclusion, I'll need to step up my workout routine to make room for all the delicate, buttery croissant that I refuse to cut out of my morning. read more

The smells draws you into the cafe, where you can find the best croissants and freshly baked bread in the city. On par with classic Parisian pastries. I recently came here with my girlfriend. You know, just keeping her happy and what-not. Believe me, she was definitely happy we stopped in here. We walked and and were immediately drawn to the right side of the bakery, where all the good stuff is. We went CRAZY. We wanted to try everything, but we don't have an unlimited budget. Thankfully, they have prices listed on everything, so you know how fast you can go broke in here. We grabbed a slice of a mango cake-thing, a cream puff, two flavored macaroons (green apple and strawberry), a grapefruit-thing, Chai Noir, and a Banana foster treat. All of them were amazing. I'm not sure about the names of everything, because I just pointed at things like the uncultured Marylander that I am, but I know good food when I see it, and our taste buds can back me up on that claim. This place is great! Fresh baked goods are hard to beat, and they have a pretty nice variety of sandwiches and salads with some fancy varieties but also the classic favorites. I'm a huge fan of their "caprice chai frappe"- I enjoy it so much that I get it every time I come. The prosciutto and goat cheese sandwich on rye bread with fig spread was delicious as well. So I've become a macaron addict recently. After trying every macaron place I could find in the district I have to say theirs is the best. Leages better than Olivia Macaron or Macaron Bee. The closest I could find to compare are the dean and deluca selection but even theirs aren't the greatest. Best part is Le caprice is the cheapest out of all of them but really delivers on flavor and texture. I probably spend $30-$50 on their macarons a week because I love them that much. And the sweet woman that owns the shop makes them herself! Do yourself a favor and don't fuck around with the fancy Georgetown shops. They're overpriced and overrated. This is such a cute bakery and a great place to plop down and do some work. They actually have wifi on the weekends, which is rare for DC. They have an awesome almond croissant that I've had many, many times. Their coffee is good, but I really did not like the dirty chai that I ordered.
