For years have been a customer of La Cave's bakery and donuts. They used to have a larger location on Sixth Street. Some years back after I worked my night shift, I would go there to buy few dozen donuts, usually glazed and bring them back for the staff lounge, as a treat for the morning shift. At some point, they had to close due to roof damage and they never opened that Sixth street location again. Luckily for me, they opened another location near my house on 22nd and Alvernon. I've been going through the drive-through just buying donuts for myself for 3 years or so. I learned on Monday they were closing for good. It's so hard to imagine because they're so tasty and then they even have a drive-through! Yesterday my former boss called after hearing the news herself, just to be sure I knew Le Caves was closing and talk about our donut memories from fifteen years ago. I'll miss their yummy treats because they have tres leches, great glazed donuts ( I must have purchased 100's), Bismarck's and eclairs. I know they did custom cakes, but I never did buy a cake. I sure do like all their pastries. I no longer bring dozens of donuts to the office, since my work changed and COVID changed how people work. Every time I have an appointment in Tucson I try to visit this delicious spot!!! My absolute favorite is the whipped cream donut! It is covered in chocolate with another dollop of whipped cream on top! I also got the blueberry fritter, chocolate long john and raspberry biszmark. All look amazing!!! read more

You need to check their hours. They open early and close early. First thing in the morning is best to catch your yummy bakery favorites! You can also call ahead & reserve your order. EVERYTHING is delicious but they only make a few of each. No problem, try something new! Haven't been disappointed yet! My favorites are chocolate or cheese croissants. The cake I special ordered was nothing short of disaster. My directions, written correctly on the order form, were ignored. This was to be for my best friend's birthday which is tomorrow, Memorial Day. No way could I find another bakery at this late date to customize another cake. The owner offered me half off. I declined. It was THAT much of a botched job to pay $38.56 for. If the owner had any sense of good PR, he would have given it to me because I didn't have much recourse at this point in time. Hmmm tough call here but I just can't say it's an incredible place, I say 3 to 3.5 is the right rating. First off the pricing I feel is very high for what you get I wouldn't really call it a doughnut shop... also it's really weird how you can't go in to even look at anything / drive through only. I have to say they are local and I love that but honestly there is a lot of competition for this kind of thing and $58 for 18 doughnuts is just too high in my opinion! I'm a huge sucker for doughnuts and have to try them all, even if I'm more of a cake doughnut eater vs the yeast kind. My favorite yeast doughnut is the twist, from an old doughnut chain called Winchells. My dad really loved going there and it was a true treat for me when he would bring back a dozen every now and again. The twist from Le Cave wasn't too bad, it was a lot more 'yeasty' than I would have enjoyed. The maple long john, however, was a lot better and something I could buy again. I was also looking forward to trying their apple fritter, but only the blueberry was available. Not sure the blueberry version was for me. Ahhh the wonderful donut. I have been hearing about La Cave's for quite some time and FINALLY got in there before a visit with my folks who are obsessed with donuts (okay, I am too). I have tried a few of the independents around town since I try to avoid chains when it comes to these fluffy gems. I must say, it is hands down my favorite 'local' donut joint so far. The place is super clean, the ladies behind the counter were friendly delivering fast and efficient service. There was a line, but it went fast. I went for the Fancy Donut dozen. I thought it was a smidge high in price considering I got a few donuts that I would not consider fancy -- e.g. a powdered donut and they gave me two of those plus a maple and chocolate glaze each. For $20 I was not very happy that they put 4 non fancy donuts in there BUT after indulging in a custard filled chocolate glazed donut... it washed my annoyance away somewhat. I am for sure a fan... I would say at least go once if you have not tried them already. The service and flavor (even for the non-fancies they snuck in my dozen) are totally on point. For years, LeCave's has been my GO-TO donut shop. Under the old ownership, at the old location, they made, in my opinion, the best donuts you could buy anywhere in America. It was a big added bonus that they were vegan-friendly. I've enjoyed these donuts when folks brought them to he office. So when I saw the open sign at the new 22nd location I stopped in. First I was thrown by the high price for the donuts, but okay they are good. I ordered an apple fritter and a Boston creme donut. First, if I wanted chocolate covered fritter if have asked. Well they just crammed them together so most of the chocolate transferred to the fritter... Which wasn't a fritter, but rather a big bready donut with a smidge of apple. The dough was good, but overall the worse apple fritter i ever had. Second, the Boston creme. I can see the reason for the high price. This thing was huge and probably had a cup of creme in it. Definitely not something a normal human could eat. I'd suggest improving the fritter and shrinking he donuts to normal size and then the prices could drop. And educate the counter folks so they know how to package donuts. read more

So we somehow missed this place when we did a Yelp search and went to another doughnut shop which fortunately was closed this weekend. We did another search and it showed up, was highly rated and was only .2 of a mile away! When we went in we were impressed by the variety of doughnuts, pastries, pies, rolls, etc. we picked out a dozen doughnuts and a bag of the rolls and were on our way. The gentleman that helped us was very pleasant and very helpful. When we got home we all started sampling. First - this is the first time I have ever heard of a blueberry fritter - it was amazing! The outside was slightly crunchy like a good fritter should be and the inside was moist and flavorful and not greasy like too many fritters often are. Great flavor. We also had to try the cinnamon roll - we were not disappointed. It had a good amount of cinnamon but not too much and was soft and fresh with just the right amount of glaze. The Boston Cream doughnut was perfect. The cream was the right amount and perfect consistency. Another success. We also tried the lemon filled with powder sugar and the apple filled with cinnamon powder sugar - both successes. We still have more to sample tomorrow but have no doubt they will be equally as tasty. We saw the bags of rolls up front and they looked inviting so we grabbed a bag. We heated each one for about ten second in the microwave to get them ward and then opened them and put butter inside. They were really, really good -- just a slight hint of sweetness but not too much and the rolls themselves were so soft and tasty. When we are in town again we will most definitely stop back to try a few of the same items we purchased and to try some of the many others we didn't try this time. read more

Finally discovered this Tucson tradition. We LOVE Le Cave's Donuts. Still need to try their cakes. Love the filled donuts, prefer the glazed over the powdered sugar ones, tend to cough as I inhale the sugar when taking a bite. I would really love to a see a lemon filled with the glaze topping. Two years ago this would have been 5 stars, but unfortunately today they only earn a 2. If you read nothing else- check the donuts they give you and make sure you are not shorted before you leave. This has happened to us on multiple occasions. Over the past 2 years the quality and size of donut have declined and the price has increased.
