This is one of my all-time favorite restaurants. From the hard-to-get reservation, to the coveted burger (I've had previously) to the artwork on the walls, the spiral staircase- everything about this place just works. We started with the sourdough bread (which you do have to pay for), but it's worth it. Next was the caviar plate, which was excellent: fresh and bursting with flavor and the egg and onions were choooed to perfection. For my entrée, I went with my usual: steak au poivre. The steak was cooked perfectly, the fries were classic French shoestrings with the perfect crisp, and the au poivre sauce was the best I've ever had - I think this place gets better and better. I had been to Raoul's about 10-15 years ago - I had absolutely no memory of going there, other than it was on my 'NYC Restaurant' excel spreadsheet with my own rating (before I was on Yelp). I saw the restaurant featured on TV recently and decided it was time for a revisit to this legendary restaurant where its Burger au Poivre is touted as being one of the best burgers in the city. I order to get the Burger au Poivre, you must sit at the bar. Raoul's serves 12 Burger au Poivre nightly - they run out almost immediately. I got in line at 4:00 for a 5:00 opening - they told me a line starts to form around 4:30. By the time 5:00 rolled around, there were about 14 people in line. Of course, I was first in line and was taken to the first bar seat furthest from the door - I was told I must take that seat since I was first - which I was fine with. I ordered the Burger au Poivre which comes with French Fries. The burger is a brisket blend patty from Pat Lafrieda - and it's covered in peppercorns - au Poivre style!! They serve a delicious cream and cognac au Poivre sauce with the burger - they tell you to cut the burger in half and dip it in the gravy - it's an explosion of gourmet tastes. I was thoroughly enjoying the unique taste, and thinking this is NO ORDINARY burger! I was doing a lot of crunching into 'something', not realizing it was dozens and dozens of peppercorns. Yes, I understand it's 'au Poivre' which means 'with pepper'....but a mouthful of peppercorns! I removed a large number of the peppercorns from my burger - it made it much more palatable. I'm all for pepper - but I do believe this was extreme - to say the least. I'm surprised this topic never came up before. I've attached pictures - you can see the thick layer of peppercorns on the burger and the ones I discarded on my plate. The burger is exceptional - but I couldn't order it again as I was told, the peppercorns' are part of the burger. The French fries were average - they're supposed fried in duck fat, but tasted like a regular French fry to me. I had the Profiteroles for dessert- they were one of three choices - and I immediately chose them as they are a favorite of mine. I was overwhelmed - they are the best or at least among the best Profiteroles I've had. You must get them for dessert! My group of 3 came here for brunch to try their burger since it's not in limited quantities like their dinner. It was easy to get a brunch reservation and service was extremely prompt without feeling rushed. The burger itself was delicious, especially if you like peppercorn. I'm not sure it's THE BEST burger in NYC but it's definitely a good quality burger, especially for $32. Unlike Red Hook or Minetta, there's a lot going on in this burger with the peppercorn crust, St Andre cheese, cornichons and an onion/lettuce salad in it. It comes with pomme frites and a side of au poivre sauce which was rich and creamy. We also enjoyed the jumbo lump crab beignets and pork belly egg sandwich. read more

I've been following the "New York's best burger" trend on TikTok and instagram. Including the frustrating trend where they only make like 12 a night, so you have to fight to get one (more on that shortly). So I set out to try a few of them myself. First I had sip & guzzle's wagyu burger which was underwhelming. I also had Lord's rarebit cheese burger and was even more underwhelmed. I didn't have high hopes for Raoul's, but they sure showed me! This was my favorite burger. It MIGHT (might, maybe, not sure) beat out Red Hook Tavern's infamous burger. This burger is crusted with peppercorns and served with pickled cornichons and this delightful little salad/slaw, which really takes the burger to the next level. The meat is seasoned and moist, cooked perfectly as I ordered it. The fresh slaw really gives it a crunch and a power punch to keep it from getting boring (like the Lord's burger was for me, boring). It's topped with St. Andre cheese and comes with pommes frites. I will say Lord's had better fries, but a lot of people will like this McDonald's adjacent skinny fry. The au Poivre sauce didn't do anything for me, you can go without it. Their rendition of the blood Mary was terrible and I wouldn't get it again. Watery. But the burger was so good, they are instantly forgiven. Hint: Burgers are unlimited during Saturday and Sunday brunch, so get a reservation then. Another thing I liked better than Lord's, no long line of hopeful walk-ins. Poor schmucks don't know what they are missing by not choosing Raoul's. Raoul's -- Worth Trying, Not Revisiting This small, intimate spot in SoHo was an obvious inclusion on our burger tour checklist--and for good reason. Raoul's burger is only available on weekends. It doesn't even appear on the regular menu, and on weekdays it's limited to just 12 servings. A well-reviewed, quasi-secret-menu burger with strict limits? Everyone in our group agreed this wasn't something to skip. We booked our reservation a full month in advance and waited patiently. Our Sunday reservation was for 11:15 AM. We arrived about 20 minutes early, only to find the restaurant still closed and roughly 15 people already waiting outside. Since it was only 10:55, we joined the queue. By the time the doors opened at 11, a few more people had arrived--but once inside, everyone was seated without issue. The space itself isn't luxurious, but it is classic and cozy, with walls covered in art that give the room a distinct character. We were seated near a small fish tank, though the tables were packed so tightly together that service looked genuinely difficult. At one point, a waiter spilled a plate of fries while serving a nearby table. Honestly, it didn't feel surprising--the aisles are that narrow. You're constantly aware that you should pull your chair in. Coat check is mandatory simply because there's nowhere else to put one. We ordered two burgers, as expected, along with an artichoke appetizer. The artichoke was fine--perfectly ordinary. Something you could easily replicate at home without much difference. Then came the mishap. When ordering, I clearly mentioned a cucumber allergy and asked that one burger be served without pickles. The waitress acknowledged this. Later, the waiter--the same one who had dropped the fries--brought out both burgers. The waitress even pointed at me and said, "This one is without pickles." The waiter nodded, handed me the burger... and yes, mine had pickles. Thankfully, they were cornichons rather than standard cucumber pickles. Oddly enough, cornichons don't trigger much of a reaction for me, and I occasionally enjoy them. So no real harm done--except that my wife, who loves pickles, ended up with the pickle-less burger. That part was disappointing. Even after being explicitly pointed out, the mistake still happened. It earned a small, awkward laugh, but also suggested either weak staff training or someone very new on the job. Now, the burger itself. The meat was juicy and clearly well-cooked, and overall it was undeniably good. But the black pepper presence is intense--lingering well beyond each bite. I found myself wondering if this was intentional, if it's simply part of the concept. And viewed that way, it starts to make sense--but it also stops feeling like a burger. It's undeniably tasty, yet it feels like eating something adjacent to a burger rather than a burger itself. The harmony between the beef and the bun, the richness and satisfaction we look for when we're truly craving a burger--none of that really landed for us. That said, I would still recommend trying it at least once. It's worth the experience. But we likely won't be back--at least not when we're genuinely craving a burger. The moment my party and I walked into Raoul's, I fell in love with the unique and charming décor. It felt like stepping into a cozy Parisian spot. Our waitress was amazing--so friendly and fun. Very good. I can't speak highly enough about the quality and taste of the dishes that we got at Raouls. The steak frites was truly without complaint and was everything that we wanted it to be. The sauce is divine and the fries were perfect. Our martinis could've been better but they weren't bad by any means. The service was the only thing that kept this from being a five star review. While the attentiveness of the server wasn't bad, his attitude was very offputting. He made a comment to my female friend that was a bit sexist in saying " Are you sure you want a martini - that's a strong drink? What about a Cosmo instead?" This definitely rubbed her the wrong way and left a little bit of a bad taste in our mouth. The ambience at Raouls, however, is great. The service is really good here and the food is very expensive. There were almost no vegetarian options which was annoying and the menu is quite small. The interior has a distinct charm the paintings on the wall give it a cool artsy vibe and the place is dimly lit making it intimate. When you have one night in NYC... this is an epic spot to go :) Less touristy, and more of a popular locals spot. Our good friends who live in NY managed to snag a reservation so we got in! We did a 9pm dinner (when in Rome...), and most of us ordered the Steak Frites. Umm... to die for. If you love a good sauce like I do... you will not be disappointed! Be warned if you're bringing your (more conservative) parents or grandparents here... there's a painting of a naked woman laying on a couch on a huge wall inside, so just sharing in case that's not your style! This is a hard to get reservation so it's been on my list for a while. We were able to get an early dinner spot and I will say it's definitely worth the hype. The restaurant itself is stunning Very old New York with dark moody decor all neatly tucked into a tiny area. The line goes down the sidewalk of patrons hoping to snag one of the few bar seats that offer up the chance to try the burger. Dinner guests don't get that opportunity at the tables. We had the crab beignets and they were amazing. Hubby and I split the steak and it was just as you've heard, sooooo delicious. We ordered extra sauce to dip the fries and I wanted to honestly drink it. Divine. My only disappointment was the old fashioneds we ordered were served in a rocks glass filled with ice. No big rocks. Kind of a fail for me with regards to the bar service. However, we ordered the dessert pastry filled with ice cream and topped with a yummy hot chocolate sauce and it was a great end to the evening. I didn't get the hype of the burger, it was good, not mind-blowing-amazing. I didn't like how tight the space was. I also didn't like how hard it was to get a reservation. If I only considered all of the above, it would've been an easy 3 star. BUT, the service was great. And more importantly, my pork belly egg sandwich was one of the best brunch sandwiches I've ever had. The pork belly was cooked perfectly, tender, juicy. I've been wanting to try steak au poivre for a minute and was very excited to score a res here with my girlfriend. Showed up 11:30 to a line already built up outside. Very warm and cozy on the inside, lots of really cool artwork on the walls as well. Staff was very nice, and what what can I say? We're here for the steak! Walked in for bar seating on a weekday just for the burger. I ended up getting there around 4:30pm (I was first in line), and a few people joined me in line soon after. Someone comes out around 10 minutes before opening to schedule you in for the bar. The burger was absolutely delicious and super flavorful. The bun was perfectly toasted and the patty was juicy and well-cooked, and I loved the little kick from the peppercorns and the tang from the cheese. It was much better than the burger from Minetta Tavern, which I thought lacked flavor. The fries were also really good - they were thin and crispy and tasted great dipped in the au poivre sauce. We ordered a ton a food and split it all. I mean it's a classic for a reason, everything was delicious. The risotto shocked me though, it was one of the best things we got and it's not what they're known for necessarily. Their steak with the special sauce is famous and it was good. I would say the sauce is what makes it special so definitely order an extra side of it for your fries. The lamb chop was also impeccable and bursting with flavor. These two dishes would definitely recommend. Granted I'm not a huge beef person so take it with a grain of salt. I was also a fan of the monkfish. For dessert, of course we ordered everything. The winner by a landslide was the bread pudding. Like WOW, this was probably the best bread pudding I've ever had. I was pleasantly surprised by the cream puffs, the chocolate coated over it was really good. Side note: This place says they only sell 12 burgers a night and only at the bar but I swear... I loved the vintage theme of the restaurant with ambient lighting, portraits all over the walls, and even a super tiny staircase leading to the upstairs bathroom. The food was great! The steak is definitely a must try. The meat was cooked perfectly, and the fries were super crispy. The peppercorn balanced perfectly with the sauce and gave it a nice little kick. It was a unique, buttery, sauce that left you wanted to dip the steak in more. The service was great, they even brought me more sauce. The burger was also really good. The bun was soft, the burger was juicy, and the condiments complimented the dish as a whole. I was told that during dinner time, only a certain amount are released. had been looking forward to dining here for quite some time and were especially excited to celebrate a birthday reservation after arriving in town from a flight. Unfortunately, the experience began on a disappointing note. When I called ahead to ask whether there was a place to briefly store my luggage during the meal, the response felt abrupt and unwelcoming. When we arrived, we were the first guests in the restaurant, and my luggage appeared to be met with further annoyance at the door. We were seated directly next to the front entrance despite the rest of the restaurant being empty, and the door was left open for the duration of our meal. Given that it was 2 degrees outside, the cold was extreme and genuinely uncomfortable- my toes became numb and discolored and my lips blue. We found ourselves rubbing our hands over the candle on the table in an attempt to stay warm. What was most disappointing was that no accommodations were offered, nor was there any acknowledgment of the situation or expression of concern or remorse from the host or management, despite how clearly uncomfortable the conditions were. While the food itself was good in flavor, it arrived cold almost immediately due to the seating location including the fries, steak, and chicken which was disappointing given the reputation of the restaurant. The highlight of the evening was our server, Nick. He was kind, attentive, patient, and genuinely warm, and he did his best to make the experience enjoyable despite the circumstances. The food here is top-notch. It's worth every penny for me. The crab beignet was a fantastic starter and the balance of the crab to the flour beignet was perfect. I had the steak frites, and I usually get tired of steak, but the sauce and seasoning was the perfect amount of pepper and savory for me. The dessert was the coconut banana bread pudding and WOW. I usually dislike coconut because it overpowers the rest of any desert, but it was just the right amount for me that it complemented the banana and bread. So impressed. The service was attentive, efficient, and friendly. I greatly respect how smooth our meal and time spent here was, and it's all thanks to the staff. Lastly, the decor and atmosphere are here are so charming! The walls are adorned with mirrors and some tasteful nude portraits, and there's a fish tank in the center. The music was very relaxing and calm which I enjoyed, but I think the later in the night it gets, the more noise there will be. This place is the King of steak frites. That's the dish. Can't get anything else. Was really superb. Big hearty plate. Steak comes with a peppercorn sauce of course the fries and a touch of greens in a mustard sauce. Mine was great even if the fries were not exactly piping hot. Reservations are difficult and a must.
