While the ambiance is beautiful, it takes forever to get your food (20 min plus for a salad?) and when you do it's just not worth the high price tag. Very undercooked egg on my friends Croque Madame as well - not just runny yolk but totally runny whites. Ugh. We went on a vacation last night to a Paris bistro and enjoyed a wonderful experience... and it was only a ten-minute drive from our front door. I have been looking forward to trying out the dinners at Le Marais since I discovered they started serving. I've been for breakfast / lunch and have enjoyed myself, only drawback being they did not serve wine at that time, which I found disappointing for an establishment defining itself as a French Bistro. ...so I called to make sure they finally did have a wine menu and I was not disappointed. My husband chose a glass of the rose and I had the French chardonnay. The chardonnay was $22 a glass, but I was introduced to French wines working as a server in Hollywood back in the day, and they are just incomparable and I was spoiled. Too bad the French hiked up their export tax on their wines years ago and make purchasing almost prohibitive for a good Bordeaux or Burgundy for the average working stiff. Anyway, both wines were delicious. We enjoyed them with the gougère and the escargot. Hubby Philip was all over his gougère, a puff pastry filled with savory cheese and accompanied by an additional fondue of cheese - sooo rich and creamy. I didn't try them as I didn't want to interrupt the flavor sensation of my escargot... the BEST I have had. I normally like them in the shell, for the romance of the tools and working to pick them out of their garlic , parsley, butter beds, but these in a ceramic escargot dish were absolutely delicious - piping hot and completely covered in what must have been bread crumbs tossed with the garlic, butter, and parsley. I'll go back just for those. For entrees, Phil had the Tagliatelle aux champignons - pasta with mushrooms. Rich sauce and delicately prepared. He raved at the flavor. I had the Saint-Jacques: pan-seared scallops with chanterelle mushrooms and Jerusalem artichoke puree. Perfectly prepared. The scallops were tender and delicious, with the right amount of crisp browning from the pan on the one side. With the Saint-Jacques I switched to the French Semillon ($25/gl)... which even outshone the Chardonnay I previously enjoyed. Dessert: the crème brûlée was also a wonderful experience. It was served in a delicate pastry shell and was superb. Our servers, Oliver and Hilda, were fantastic -- attentive and hospitable. Made us feel very special indeed. The restaurant itself is decorated with tasteful modern fixtures and a very nice hero wall featuring a collection of framed French posters of artists and events. We had dinner at 6 pm on a Friday night and thankfully, it was not full. Our servers told us it could get packed at times. The only missed beat was that their actual menu we saw at dinner was not identical with their website menu and there were a few items missing that we were considering. However, what a great vacation! I can't wait for our next trip to Paris in Mill Valley. Jusqu'à la prochaine fois .. until next time, Le Marais! read more

The jury is still out for Le Marais. This is my first experience. Evidently the kitchen is closed on Mondays, so I chose the ham and cheese croissant. A classic. It's huge and beautiful, but there was one scrawny piece of ham slid down to one corner, hardly any taste of cheese, and the pastry is spongey (not flakey). I had to open up the croissant to see if they sold me the wrong item. How can any baker justify this? Super disappointed and hardly authentic in quality. I want my choleric intake back. It has been poorly spent today. Also my friend had the almond croissant, which she said was overly sweet in an American pastry way. read more

My parents are visiting me in the Bay Area. They did a short getaway and stopped at Le Marais Bakery in Mill Valley, where they had the most memorable and delightful lunch in a sun-filled and expansive space. The people working here are the loveliest humans--they went above and beyond in being welcoming and kind. I can't thank them enough for the courtesy they showed my elderly parents. It made their day, and is such a special and unforgettable highly of their visit here. My parents returned raving about the food--they ordered three of the specials, and said the burger in particular was the best they've ever had. The lemon cake is *chef's kiss*. And we've all been sampling and savoring the box of pastries, which are DIVINE. Absolutely worth making a trip out to Mill Valley just to stop here. What a great spot. read more

Due to illness, the family Christmas dinner I was to attend with my daughter was cancelled. Difficult to find a place the day before Christmas, but I was able to make a reservation for Christmas at 7pm. This was via Resy. We arrived at Le Marais and the restaurant was dark! I had received texts from Resy confirming the reservation. I have written to Patrick the owner 3 times since Christmas, asking for an explanation as to how this happened. He has not responded, which is extremely disappointing. I am a frequent customer, but am not sure if I'll be back, if I don't hear from him. read more

Le Marais has won our hearts as the local place to go for delicious local food, and pastries, all expertly prepared. It is a lovely space, with lots of outside seating as well as cozy indoor seating. In every way, it is a true French Bistro. The servers are very nice as well. My go to dish is their chicken salad. The base is cabbage and romaine, and is loaded with delicious chicken, cashews, and a fabulous dressing. I'm really picky, so trust me on this. We also love their half chicken plate, and truly epic burger! They are open from 5-9 W-Th for dinner, and the fare is exquisite. Highly recommend. read more

I was really hoping to love it here. It's a neighborhood gem location off downtown and great to walk from Sycamore or Boyle Park. Each time I've been has been just coffee. Today, I came in for a to go order. I ordered a croissant, iced coffee, and Caesar salad. I was charged $25. I asked for non dairy milk for the coffee and the cashier told me (after I paid) that it is extra. I let her know I would be fine without and get it a home. I waited twenty minutes for my $14 salad. The only person eating in the cafe was an employee (maybe owner) who got up bussed her plate into the kitchen said a couple words to the four chefs and then rang someone up while I waited. When I got home with my salad, it didn't look like a $14 entree Caesar- just lettuce, cheese sprinkles, and little croutons with two side containers of dressing. Such a bummer. I will also say it's not about Mill Valley prices because Piazza D'Angelo has a Caesar that is just right for less money and they're downtown. I should have ordered a cheese sandwich or maybe a croque. Why would they charge more for a splash of non dairy yet leave out a pitcher of regular cream on the counter? read more

I write this within the reality-distortion field that exists when you are a customer at a boutique restaurant with incredibly high prices and an air of elitism at play within the business... I'm not going to complain about a $6 toast on top of a $16 salad. BUT. There are two factors to running a successful continued to-go business model, particularly in a challenging economic climate for restauranteurs that were a disaster today: communication and respect. We picked up our order and returned to the office and discovered an item was missing. When I returned to the restaurant to ask for it, I was given attitude about it. I was actually lectured in front of patrons, complete with a cartoon finger-wag. Pretty astonishing. So, be warned, even within the fantasy world in which Le Marais operates: when you order brioche, shown on the menu with butter and jam, and ask for the butter, you should prepare yourself to be told repeatedly the item doesn't include butter. You know, table butter. Like table salt. Or napkins. Unlike salt and napkins, butter is on the menu. But don't be fooled. No butter for you! (Full disclosure: I successfully procured said butter and left... for my last time... but prepare to work for it if you want it!) read more

To those that have referenced typical French service in this regard, I beg to differ. Maybe I'm old, or at least old fashioned, but struggle with a place that's quite expensive ($18 for a burger for example) and the front of house work staff are wearing sweats and yoga pants. This was our 4th and last visit to Le Marais. The last 3 times we came they were out of matcha and had no tofu for the vegan salad, which is the key ingredient, but they don't tell you there's no tofu they just bring it out without it and hope you don't notice. Today, we called in advance. We asked them to confirm they had tofu which they did before making the 15 min drive only to get there and be given a salad with no tofu. We asked and they said they thought there was tofu but they didn't actually check when we called. We asked to talk to a manager or the chef and were told "he's in a bad mood". This place is an epic disappointment and a poorly run business that can't manage their inventory. read more
