We drove to Mills Valley in the early morning and decided to check out this local bakery. There is street parking available and we luckily got a spot right across from the bakery. The bakery was decently busy with locals going in and out. I ordered the Resurrection Morning Bun, which had an almond and citrusy flavor. It was a delicious morning treat that wasn't too sweet and made for a filling breakfast. Super cute bakery spot! My friends got cappuccinos and were very pleased. We also shared a slice of banana bread which I appreciated was more banana flavored than sugary - a tad bit dry but maybe that's the style. My matcha was okay... it was made wrong at first, with regular milk instead of almond. I went up to get it fixed and the guy (today) who was fixing my order looked very irritated (maybe he was having a bad day?) because I asked him to fix it and irritated even when I went back and asked if the drink on the counter was my remake. He was clearly not happy to be there.... Bad customer experience there! Would be willing to try it out again because the pastries were good - hopefully I get a different barista :) my matcha remake was okay. read more

The line was out the door but it went fast and the communal table was perfect to chat with some hikers while finishing our snacks. They have a couple tables outside too. The building is a little house and feels as warm and cozy as you'd imagine. Not a bad option on the menu!! The lemon scone was light and the perfect balance of sweet and tangy. A must visit in Mill Valley. 1. Madrona makes my favorite ham and cheese croissant ever. They don't skimp on the ham and cheese and the combo of gruyere and smoked ham is delicious. The way they laminate the croissant (similar to the way they laminate their kouign amann) is genius and makes the croissant extra crispy and fun to eat. I've had it fresh once and it was perfection!! 2. Besides their ham & cheese croissant, I also really enjoy their other laminated pastries like their kouign amann and pain au chocolat. I appreciate that they do things a little differently here and you can taste the quality. 3. I haven't had a chance to try their bread but these go fast! Literally within hours. A jewel hidden in Mill Valley! Found it while looking parking to go to another coffee shop near by! I went into Madrona Bakery for a pastry because I missed breakfast. This is a single item review; their cheddar biscuit with caramelized onions is amazing. I got their right when they opened so I was the first person in the door. Service was fast and efficient, and the whole store smelled like delicious bread. The best part was being passed the biscuit. It was warm. When I took my first bite... it was warm, slightly crunchy on the outside and buttery on the inside. Heaven. I will definitely come back next time I am in Mill Valley to try their other items. read more

The shop is really cute. At first when you walk in there's a board that helps you pick what to get lol but then you walk up to see everything in the case, and realize you want to try literally everything. The two ladies working helped me pick two different pastries. I got the kouign Amann and the cheesy pull apart bread. It was the BEST kouign amann that I've ever had. It was nice and caramelized on top and crunchy, but also soft and flakey inside. It was not too sweet. It was just right. And that cheesy pull apart bread was so soft and cheesy and salty. WHAT A GREAT FIND! Stopped by Saturday morning for a quick bite nearby before going on a hike. At ~10am, the line was very short with only one person ahead of me. The pastries here were delicious! The croissant was visually amazing. Flakey and perfectly layered, each bite was a satisfying crunch on the exterior accompanied by a fluffy interior. What we got: - Savory Danish ~which was savory indeed. Careful when eating this, the grated cheese and the croissant flakes will cover you or the table. - Ham and Cheese Croissant ~not just aesthetically looking--tastes amazing. The thick slices of ham add savoriness to the pastry, while the exterior is slightly sweet and balances the saltiness. Highly recommend! - Caramelized Onion Cheddar Biscuit ~ THIS. This biscuit was perfect. Not too buttery or oily. Not dry. Not heavy. This was a perfect biscuit. WiFi friendly and with an aesthetic, modern cozy cabin feel. Located in a small vintage house, space is limited and includes communal seating and about five two tops. An absolute gem of a bakery. Everything from the vibe, ambiance, decorations, service, and MOST IMPORTANTLY THE FOOD is amazing! I tried so many pastries here and will definitely be coming back to try the rest. Disclaimer, I did not try any of the pastries in the store at room temperature, I heated each item at 400C for 1 minute first! The Kouign Amann is absolutely wonderful, nice crisp crust and texture, inside is layered nicely. The Cardamom Swirl is amazing, with a heavy cardamom and herb flavor. The cardamom and herb flavors are quite strong on it's own, but went perfect paired with a cup of black coffee! The Lemon Honey Lavender Pull-Apart was tasty AND fun to eat. It's baked with multiple pieces of dough attached together that it is easily pulled apart into bite sized pieces! I'm usually not a fan of ham & cheese croissants, but I really enjoyed the one at Madrona Bakery! It had a nice layer of ham & cheese, with additional cheese at the end of the croissant that was heated for a while, giving the outer layer of cheese a nice crusted crunch, yum! I learned about Madrona during a recent visit to Mill Valley, and finding this bakery was a delightful surprise. I as impressed by the selection of pastries and bread on display, and it was hard to choose given the beautiful variety of goods on sale. I ended up choosing a morning bun, and it was flaky and not overly sweet. I would definitely get it again given how tasty it was! I also ordered a cortado, and I thought it was well-constructed. I'd be curious to try their other coffee drinks if I visited in the future, and I hope to check out Madrona when I'm in Mill Valley again! read more

There wasn't much flavor with the mushroom and celery on it either. I tried their London fog as well which was a pretty typical earl grey with steamed milk. The presentation of everything was nice. Beautiful little bakery full of beautiful food (4/5 green stars) Zig-zagging through the streets of Mill Valley I told my friend that, once we park, we'll have to get out of the car and race up the little hill to make it before closing. So we parked on Madrona St. because we were headed to the Madrona bakery and not Le Marais, as my friend had assumed. Never assume, I started preaching, and then remembered that we only had 7 minutes before closing. I don't remember the last time I was so glad to get in the door before closing - the window on delicious pastries had almost closed but we made it just in time. We ordered quite a few things and Gemma (I think) threw in a couple of extra things to try out. Besides this, she was extremely helpful in describing the offerings and chitchatting about the challenges of running a bakery. It's challenging, so give Madrona a try next time you are in Marin. I thought the cheddar and chutney sandwich was delicious and a bargain lunch for $12. Ditto for the olive focaccia and double-ditto for the cookies - I don't remember what it was but, looking at the menu it must have been the cocoa-oat-pecan-cherry. My kind of cookie! Madrone made it onto the SF Chronicle's list of the best bakeries in the Bay Area and deserves to be there. I'm giving Madrona 4/5 Green Stars for social and environmental impact, based on the fact that most of the menu is vegetarian and there are also a few vegan items too. I'd love to see more vegan offerings - these days it's not too hard to find a vegan butter substitute that's pretty much indistinguishable from butter in many situations (muffins, scones, biscuits, cookies...). It would also be great to see more info on the Madrona website, although I do appreciate both chefs sharing their favorite Stanely Tucci moment - I'm a big fan of Big Night (fans of The Bear should check it out). Packaging for Madrona pastries is minimal - paper bags and small cardboard boxes. I like that they collaborate with local businesses on ingredients and items for sale (they also run workshops). Delicious Bread & Bagels -- Tiny but Tasty Spot Madrona Bakery is a true gem for fresh, homemade breads. Their sun-dried tomato bagel is my absolute favorite--so flavorful and perfectly chewy. The rest of their breads are equally delicious and clearly made with care. Their coffee is pretty good too and pairs well with any of their baked goods. The space itself is very small, so I wouldn't recommend going with a big group. I usually grab my order to go, which works perfectly. Customer service is okay--nothing over the top, but efficient. They're gorgeous, great presentation - namely the Nutella and Kouign Aman. But they weren't flaky, just bread-y. The baguette was lackluster. The pull apart breads were too dense. Too stunned to speak. I liked everything here. The service, the atmosphere, the decor, the food... The shop is small but comforting and rustic. It gives the vibes of a friendly neighborhood bakery with all the bustle of town. Ordering is done at the front, and service is quite quick. We came here hungry, and even though I was full after eating my portions, I feel like I could've eaten 2 more breads just because that's how tasty it was. Diving right in, the bacon tomato bialy has plentiful crunchy and fragrant sesame seeds. It's very crunchy in a way that is so satisfying yet does not hurt the mouth from being difficult to chew. The toppings are delectable and a great addition; I only wish I could had more of that bacon. The pizza focaccia's flavors are very umami. I don't have much to say except that this is a bakery, and that focaccia's texture was perfect. It was soft, fluffy, and chewy: the signs of heavenly masterful gluten formation. On that note, the morning bun was a blissful treat. The sugar adhered enough to not be annoying like a powdered sugar donut, but also not enough to be too sticky when touched with finger moisture. Likewise, it was the power of bread (this time laminated dough) that made this morning bun magical. So flaky, so many layers... I drool thinking of it. Overall, I find that the sweets here are done better than the savory breads, but you can't go wrong with any of the options (at least from my sample size analysis). read more

WOW this is seriously a hidden gem here in Mill Valley. I found this location on yelp and saw the amazing pastries. I decided to give it a try. I ordered: 1. Lemon Meringue Croissant: SO GOOOD!! The Croissant was so fresh and crunchy. I thought it would just be some mild lemon flavored frosting on top but its actually filled with Lemon Meringue filling which isn't too sweet or overpowering and has a fresh taste of citrus which was very refreshing. 2. S'mores Croissant: This was everyone's favorite! The top toasted marshmallow was so perfectly cooked where it doesn't' get all over the place when you bite into it. I wasn't expecting the solid chocolate inside but I actually liked it. My sister suggested trying like a chocolate moose instead inside but I think the texture is better with the actual chocolate bar inside 3. Berry Custard: We unfortunately tried this later in the day where it started to get soggy but it was still quite good! The berries were super fresh and custard not too sweet but very flavorful. Overall, highly recommend this place. They also serve coffee and other drinks and have a huge variety of options. There are plenty of places to sit and park around the area. A small yet a good-vibes place because of the staff, the not-loud music, and the interior design! Their door says Th-Su 8-3 so I was lucky since i didn't know beforehand whether they were open haha. Yum yum!!!! My friend and I stopped by Memorial Day Weekend on Sunday morning and had placed our preorders online about a week prior. It's pretty neat how far ahead they can schedule preorders! I got the smores round croissant (weekend only), plain croissant, chocolate chip cookie, and brown butter oat cookie. I would rank them from best to least best: plain croissant, choco chip cookie, brown butter oat cookie, and the smores round. All were delicious and great, my only complaint is that the smores round was a bit too sweet for me- I'd have loved it if the chocolate was dark and bitter, balancing out the delicious toasted marshmallow fluff. The plain croissant was great, amazing flavor and texture, even better when I air-fried it at home to warm it up. My friend and I agree that it comes close to Arsicault, and Arsicault is our favorite!!! Staff was super friendly when we let them know we pre-ordered, the case was still full when we rolled up around 9:30 though, so people aren't mobbing this place (and maybe we like to gatekeep just a little hehe).
