I took my sisters and our mother out to Le Sud for her birthday tonight and expectations didn't meet reality. The ambiance and wait staff were fantastic. The Tirokafteri small plate was great, as well as the mussels, however both steaks and the fish were undercooked and unfortunately disappointing. The lava cake had a completely solid ganache and the accompanying ice cream was freezer burned. I've heard only great things about this place and would potentially be willing to give it another try since I was so excited to take my mom and sisters, but was shocked in the product vs expectations. Excited to experience French Mediterranean cuisine at Le Sud in the trendy Roscoe Village neighborhood of Chicago. Le Sud means The South. It just celebrated its third anniversary in September. The menu includes eight small and nine large plates. It features lighter, healthier French cooking. While waiting for my dining partners, I had a delicious Magnolia Street cocktail at the bar. The bartender told me her menu favorites, which were consistent with Bailey, our server, who was fabulous! My dining partners are regulars and suggested we start with the Smoked Ham & Cheese Croquettes, which were piping hot from the kitchen. From the large plate menu we ordered the Grilled Denver Steak Txuleton (Steak Frites) and the Grilled Sakura Pork Chop. Both were super flavorful, large portions. The French Herb Roasted Chicken is another signature, but is a massive bird. Too much for my appetite tonight. We finish with two decadent desserts: the classic Creme Brûlée and the Dip & Sip Donut Bread Pudding. I only wish we had such a great restaurant down the street from where we live. Bravo! read more

We made it back to try brunch and it did not disappoint! We made a last minute reservation and was accommodated promptly. The shakshuka is definitely something worth trying. There is a deep flavor of spice that is not too overpowering. It balances the eggs and toast. We also tried the burger, which was so juicy and had many layers of flavor. i came here on a sunday for brunch at 11 AM with a group of 7. we had originally reserved for a group of 6, but we called the night before and were able to change the reservation to 7. we sat in the outside area which was covered and had heaters. the heat was too hot at first but the service was proactive with checking in with us on the heat level and turning it down upon request. the restaurant was well decorated for valentine's day. i ordered the blackberry blitz mocktail and really liked it. for food, i ordered the crab florentine. the eggs were decent, but i felt like the real standout was the potatoes which were slightly crispy. after the drinks came, our food took forever to come out. we were at the restaurant for 2.5 hours total due to the long wait for food. i think they might've forgotten one of our orders as well since it didn't come out with the rest of the food. they also brought out something that we didn't order and included it on the final bill, but removed it once we asked. overall, my brunch experience was a little disappointing. my friend went for restaurant week and said the dinner experience was better, though. read more

Overall: A pricey, but delicious, southern France experience. The good: Atomsphere is great, with plenty of outdoor and indoor seating. Well-varied menu with a lot of options to choose from, including drinks (which were also fantastic). The complimentary bread is delicious and tastes like it's from France, but we wish we had more of it for a larger table. The salmon was cooked to perfection and the octopus was delicious as well. Tried the NYE prix fixe menu and was slightly disappointed. Really cute ambiance and adorable Christmas decorations. Not a bad deal for $75 including a sparkling wine. The white asparagus soup was very watery and flavorless. I asked for my ribeye medium and it came out medium well with deep chars. My potatoes were definitely burnt. We asked for bread and got it when the mains came out. I'm surprised that there was complimentary olive oil in the table and had to ask for bread and was charged for it at the end. Le Sud is an adorable restaurant with a very homey feel. I loved the sparkle lights on the ceiling! We were greeted immediately and warmly by the host. Service was great all around and very attentive. I would definitely call this cuisine more French than Mediterranean but everything we ate was very good. We shared a bunch of appetizers including the mussels, artichokes, burrata and half loaf of bread. The server recommended the Duck Confit as my main and it was extremely crispy and flavorful, I would have enjoyed a different side dish as the salad was just a little 'ok' for me. My husband loved his filet mignon, especially the Demi-glaze that came with it. Overall Le Sud is a very charming restaurant with very good food and I would urge anyone to give it a try. read more

I recently went for their special anniversary prix frixe deal and was sooo impressed!! We started with a glass of sparkling wine and I had the grilled shrimp and piparra pepper for an appetizer. This had some wonderfully unique flavors but was still very light! I had the grilled fish for my entree. The vegetables and sauce on top were absolutely incredible. The fish was grilled to perfection and had a lovely charred flavor to it as well. I finished with the creme brûlée, which actually was not all that delicious. I've been to Le Sud twice this year! Once for a Yelp Elite event and then again for dinner with friends (because I had such a great experience at the Yelp event). Ms. Sandy, the owner, is an exceptional restauranteur. She is kind, funny, and runs a great business. Her effervescence alone brings ambiance to the restaurant. I've had the following appetizers: kale and manchego salad, fried artichoke hearts, grilled shrimp & piparra pepper, smoked ham and cheese croquette, and fried polenta cake. Highlights include the polenta cake and croquettes. These are rich and delicious. As for entrees, I had the salmon. Normally, Salmon is not my favorite, but I couldn't resist the accompanying pine nuts, raisins, sweet drops, rapini, and puffed lentils. It was very unique. Additionally, the salmon was seared to perfection and still cooked throughout. I highly recommend LeSud, it is a gem! read more

Visited Le Sud last night to celebrate my birthday and to enjoy a Chicago Restaurant Week meal. Because of the pandemic, this was the first time that we have had dine-in restaurant meal for over two years. Located on a quiet stretch on Roscoe in Roscoe Village, Le Sud is a charming and cozy French Mediterranean restaurant. Its indoor dining area is on two floors and it has a large enclosed outdoor dining area. To be pandemic safe, we made reservations for the outdoor area, but because it was a Friday night...we found that area to be too crowded and noisy. We requested a table inside, and we were much happier when they graciously honored our request. For Chicago Restaurant Week, Le Sud offered a three course meal with six options for a starter, six options for dinner, several sides (for an additional charge), and two desserts. We had already stopped for cocktails at another bar, so my husband ordered a beer. I ordered the Black Wave cocktail made with Four Roses Bourbon, cassis and other mixers. The cocktail was tasty, but leaned heavily on the sweet side. A plate of bread was brought to the table along with a carafe of water...a nice touch that I love! For starters, my husband ordered the polenta with romesco sauce and I ordered the ham and cheese croquettes. The polenta was the star here...the sauce was flavorful and delicious. The croquettes were good, but their inner consistency was gooey...with only a hint of ham...and a little too rich for my taste. Both starters were beautifully presented and the portion size was generous. For our entree, we both ordered the verlasso salmon served on a bed of plumped lentils and other ingredients (this entree is not shown on their online Chicago Restaurant Week menu). Again, these entrees were beautifully presented. The salmon was perfectly cooked, thick and moist, and it was absolutely delicious. The portion size was so big that we could only finish half. Yay! Leftovers for tonight!! For dessert, there was a choice of creme brûlée and fruit with a sabayon sauce. I generally do not eat dessert, so I opted for the fruit...and it was excellent and the perfect end to our meal. Our servers were friendly, attentive and quick. And as a vintage dinnerware collector, I loved the charming dinnerware that was used for each course and for coffee. We were quite pleased with our experience at Le Sud, and we will definitely return. I would love to give them a 4.5 star rating (I only reserve 5 for the best of the best), but Yelp only allows a 4 or 5 star rating. If you have not tried Le Sud, and you like French Mediterranean food, go, go, go...you will not be disappointed. read more

A fun, charming and lively neighborhood spot with service to match. Le Sud was all decked out for the holidays and the mood was just perfect. We ordered a bottle of tempranillo followed by the kale salad and the shrimp. The shrimp were just cooked through, soft and tender. The salad was salty sweet with generous shards of manchego and chewy golden raisins, just dressed enough. The roast chicken was very tasty with flavorful skin, however my salmon definitely needed a kick up in seasoning, and was rather bland and a tad overdone. Came tonight after about 3 years not having been here and wow. Huge disappointment. Ordered the grilled shrimp orzo. Flavorless, oily, poorly seasoned. Asked for a classic martini and the bartender had to ask if I knew how much gin vs. vermouth. Really? If I order an $18 martini, I certainly hope the bartender knows how to make it. The atmosphere is also gone. Used to feel sultry and French. Now they have cheesy Christmas lights all over the ceiling, bright white chandeliers (not at all cozy), and the vibe has gone from cool French/Mediterranean bespoke to what could be a chain restaurant in the burbs. The first time we went last year, we had a fantastic meal, and so I am giving three stars. However, each meal since then has been consistently worse, to the point where I don't think we'll be back. First, this place has become so vegan unfriendly. Not only that, they used to bill themselves as at least knowing the options, but now no one really seems to know. While the staff is very nice and tries to be accomodating, they take forever to even find out, and the stated options keep changing, giving little faith in accuracy. Like this past time they confirmed that all of their pasta except gnocchi have egg in it. Last time they said none of them do. It makes me very nervous about eating there. Second, things are slow. Getting seated is slow. Asking questions is slow. Receiving a can of coke is slow. Part of it is because they are really nice, and so they chat it up with each table, but when you see a server holding your drink a few tables away for over five minutes because they are having a conversation with that table (not even ordering), it's really frustrating. It took us over 30 minutes to even place our order. This was in part because of them trying to figure out what was vegan, but they would disappear for large periods of time. Finally, it's just really crowded. This is great for the restaurant, but it means it is really loud and hard to get service. We had a hard time hearing each other at the table. So super friendly staff (when you can talk to them), some good items (when they have them in-- how do you run out of hummus?), and a cute atmosphere. But given the disappointment the past two times, we won't be back. read more

I came with a group of friends during restaurant week. They had a good variety of choices and I will definitely come back during summertime to sit on their patio. Our waiter was nice but very busy- i didn't mind the slow service since i was in good company. My biggest complaint was the size of our table- it was so small we couldn't fit all of the dishes or drinks on the table- which made it hard to split I have a few highlights from the menu, see below. The most surprising and best appetizer we had was the grilled artichokes. They were incredible- light, slight charred with the smokey flavor from the grill, refreshing and clean. I will 100% be getting these each time. We also tried the escargot which was good but I like the natural taste of escargot and felt it was covered by the mass amount of cheese. However, if this is your first time trying snails- this is the best way to have them prepared. The ham and cheese croquettes were good but not my favorite of what we tried. The mains we had were good but nothing great in my opinion. The branzino was good perfectly but was lacking flavor, the pasta dish was simple but good and the most disappointing was the steak frites. The fresh fries with the sauce were perfect but our steak was chewy and slightly over cooked (I like my meat medium for reference). I look forward to returning for the patio this summer. read more

For my appetizer I chose the roasted carrots, which were incredible! This was the perfect light way to start a meal, and a great veggie option that's NOT the same ol' salad! For my entree I (of course!) ordered the duck. I just got back from France a couple months ago, so I feel like I had my fair share of good duck, and Le Sud definitely lived up to those expectations! It was also a VERY generous portion, so I started to feel super full at this point. Alas, there was still dessert, so I trudged on with the orange chocolate mousse. What do you know? Also amazing! Thick, rich and sinful. The whole meal was outstanding. The great thing about Le Sud though is the service doesn't lack either. They were quick to give suggestions, checked in frequently without being over bearing, and perfectly paced our courses. We were so impressed! We recently booked a private birthday party for 25. Everything was good about this event and Le Sud's role in it. The food was truly delicious (every dish). The upstairs private room was cozy, welcoming and just the right size. Everywhere we looked it was spotlessly clean. With windows on 2 sides we were basked in sunlight on an otherwise cold and slightly snowy day. Sandy, the owner, was helpful, responsive and friendly throughout. On the day of the event our primary server, Michael, was helpful ,organized, and very easy to work with. He doesn't seem to know the word "No"! Whenever we had a need, he promptly met it. We can to Le Sud for their Restaurant Week menu. Although it is January, Le Sud retains a festive glow and feels like you're snuggling up by the fireplace on a snowy Chicago day. There are colorful lights and wreaths hung up along with the cutest holiday seat covers that vary from table to table. The plates have authentic patterns, immediately setting the stage for a delicious French meal. They brought us bread not listed on the menu, which was a nice surprise and a great palate cleanser. For the first course, we got escargot and kale and Manchego salad. The escargot came drowned in a butter garlic sauce and topped with mozzarella. The snails were delicious, and we didn't want any of the sauce to go to waste, so we dipped our bread into the escargot sauce for pure buttery garlic goodness. The salad was a fantastically refreshing complement to the escargot dish, with pine nuts and golden raisins scattered throughout. A light way to start our meal. For our entrees, we got the Riesling chicken and the duck confit. The Reisling undertones were difficult to pick up in the dish, but the chicken itself was cooked to perfection and a good portion size. The potatoes were a nice accompaniment. The duck confit was cooked very well, with the meat remaining moist and a nice sear all around. It came with figs and apricots topped with a balsamic glaze. I personally was not a fan, as I was hoping for a more savory rendition of duck, and this was a little too sweet for my taste. It came with a salad as well, but I thought it tasted a little bitter. For our desserts, we got the bread pudding and white chocolate raspberry cheesecake. The bread pudding tasted just as good as it looked if not better -- warm and soft, but not soggy. Tasted just like an apple cider donut, bringing us back to fond memories at the Apple orchard. I'm not usually one for white chocolate or fruit in my desserts, but I have to say I quite enjoyed this cheesecake. It was very fresh -- I could taste the seeds from the raspberry in the homemade sauce. I went here last night with three friends for two of our bdays this month, and we had the NICEST experience. I had never been before but the menu called to me. Everything we ate was insanely good. I especially was blown away by the Santorini salad (yes, a salad!), the Iberico pork, and the fettucine with clams. We had lovely wine and cocktails too.
