I dined here late one night recently, choosing this place solely based on the Yelp reviews. And as usual, my fellow Yelpers did not let me down; this place was terrific! I was glad I made reservations, as even at 8pm on the night we visited, it was totally packed here. (Note: If there's no available street parking, there's a large parking lot next door and the prices are super cheap. Compared to Seattle or Vancouver, at least). Very cool decor inside, and very warm, Peruvian-esque vibe. Warm colors and vibrant dinnerware patterns. Large aquarium behind the long bar at the front. Obviously a very popular place, especially with young professionals; the place was hopping and bustling. Even the bathrooms were cute, with a South American flare. Our server was lovely, and very knowledgable about the extensive menu (which was totally alien to my daughter and me. We love tapas, but are not familiar with South American fare). Everything we had was delicious: avocado and smoked trout toast, the salad with goat cheese and Champagne dressing, and a few daily specials that I forget but were wonderful. LeChon was a good place to eat, we tried to go to "Mothers" but the wait was 45 mins + long, so we walked down towards the Saturday Market online the Riverfront (or is it the Riverwalk) and stumbled upon LeChon. There was no wait, the service was fast and friendly and attentive. The food was good quality and quantity and decent pricing. I'd say this is a reliable place to go to, but if you are selective (i.e. picky), maybe check online to see their menu, as it's not traditional breakfast foods, and has a Latin ethnic influence to the cuisine, I believe. The food was great! At first they explain to you that it is a family style restaurant and you share meals. But let me tell you...the portions are small. You don't wanna share. I promise there won't be leftovers. The drinks were good. The staff was nice. Our waitress was pushy towards the sharing. When we didn't share she started with an attitude not sure why. I originally had a reservation here but cancelled it because of personal reasons. But then I had the opportunity to eat here, so I took it sans reservation. The wait was about 30 minutes, which I found to be faster than expected when considering the time of day and number of people being served. And they have a callback system for the wait, so you can go explore the local area while waiting your turn. Now, I'm not from the area, so I'm not in touch with the general attitude and demeanor of the locals. That said, it'd be about the only part of my experience here that I would say needs improvement. Something about some of the staff here came off as a bit 'hipster' or snobbish. I really can't place my finger on it. But my date, who is also from the area, said the same thing, so I know it wasn't just me. But all those concerns were at the time eviscerated as soon as I started eating. HO-LY SHITE. These mofos can cook... First in my belly was the Pork Belly w/ Rhubarb Reduction. The reduction added a great touch of sweetness to the pork, which was tender and juicy. Next was the Burrata, which is pretty much a caprese salad. YO. I had to ask if the mozzarella was made in house because it was divine. I'm no expert with describing how something feels or tastes on my palate but I could tell this was locally made, which was confirmed by our server. Last was the bone marrow with gaucho bread, which had a side of chimichuri. I was surprised with the number of pieces I received. We got nearly every single dish and can say hands down this place is a must go to! It's tapas style so they're small shareable plates. The sangria was the perfect sangria, not to sweet and it complemented the food perfectly. The shrimp ceviche was very limey, big hunks of shrimp, but the chips were a little too salty. The squash and foraged mushrooms were some of my favorite dishes of the night and I'm not a fan of mushrooms so that says something. The chicken was juicy and sooo flavorful and has a nice smokiness to it. The grilled octopus was cooked nicely definitely not chewy. The only dish of the night I didn't really enjoy was the vermicelli dumplings. 10/10 would recommend this restaurant and I will be back! read more

Let me just tell you that the highlight of my foodie life was here at Lechon, eating their banana cream pie. I think about this pie very often. I pull up the picture of it on my phone weekly, dreaming of it. My friends and I came to Lechon for a dinner reservation, and was seated in front of the kitchen. Although it was busy with foot traffic, a perk was that the chef gave us a dish on the house. Including this free dish (popcorn chicken, highly recommend), we had ordered 7 plates to split between 4 girls. We were stuffed. I was with a group of people at a conference and the host chose this restaurant. To be honest when we sat down, I was not excited. I typically don't like tapas because when I like a meal I don't want just a little taste. But when I looked at the menu I wasn't sure I was going to like anything. Wow was I wrong. Ordered cocktails first. I had the shine eyed girl. It was one of best drinks I've had. There was a spice that offset the sweetness of the pineapple and rum, that was addictive. The waitress Libby was great. She explained everything to us and suggested we each order 2 things. We started with the apple salad and the farmers salad. Both were tasty. I'm not sure I remember everything we ordered (2 strong drinks), but I remember the brussel sprouts and patata's were awesome. The Peruvian chicken bites were flavorful and spicy. The short ribs and flank steak were good. Goucho bread was a great addition, but to me the lomo saltado was the star. I will be seeking out the Peruvian restaurant in my city to get that again! Another one of our group got the octopus and said was excellent. I tried it and it was pretty good but I have never had it so nothing to compare it to. The scallops were probably the weakest dish but still good. We then tried the banana caramel pie, cheesecake, and chocolate tart, we all declared the banana caramel pie the best. Ok, this is a restaurant that I've been to twice and tried numerous dishes (always shareable) and have loved all of them. Whenever I travel, I tend to find a restaurant that I like so much that end up going to twice during my trip. This was that restaurant, and it's safe to say they served one of my favorite meals the whole trip. I loved the ambiance, the lighting and the fish tanks. It's incredible how many people can fit into the space! For dinner and weekends I recommend a reservation since it tends to fill up fast. The staff here is super friendly and made great recommendations. This isn't strictly Argentinian, but more of a fusion of South American flavors. Peruvian fried chicken bites - A great crunch and sweetness. It's the kind of food that you can't help but go back for more. I can't help but describe it as chicken breaded in Captain Crunch even if that's not how they prepare it. Braised Brisket Empanadas - Small, but filled with tender brisket. The dipping sauce really makes it, though. Smoked and Slow Roasted Brisket Tacos - Same tasty brisket but topped with a fresh veg garnish of red onion, cilantro, corn and tomato. They top or include this garnish with nearly every dish, but I'm not complaining. It's light and refreshing, especially with that lime. Pork Anticucho - Grilled pork on skewers? Sounds basic but the pork is super tender, as if they've marinated and tenderized it for a good amount of time. This is a must-try Chimichurri Burger - Think about a juicy burger with two types of chimichurri inside. You couldn't go wrong with this one, but again, it's just a burger. Foraged Mushrooms - A must for the mushroom lover. Eaten together with a piece of that warm, buttery brioche is a fantastic, textured bite. Smoked Bone Marrow - I've had better bone marrow elsewhere, but that doesn't make this dish bad. It's exactly what you'd think it is. And the chimichurri makes a big difference. Patatas - Patatas Bravas topped with a some heat. I tolerate spicy foods, and this one put me a little over the edge. Still great though. Definitely the best patatas bravas I had during my stay. Grilled Octopus - I'm not a huge fan of octopus in general, but this was good. The crunchy, salty chorizo went great with the chopped crispy potatoes. 28 Day Dry Aged Ribeye - Everything you'd expect from a dish like this. They top it with (you guessed it) chimichurri, but I'm not complaining. I wouldn't order it again but it was tender and delicious nonetheless. read more

If you're on the fence, stop overthinking and just go. Prepare your taste buds for some serious excitement! We ordered take-out, and every single thing we got was extremely good. The shining stars were the shrimp ceviche (which came in a sauce that tasted like liquid sunshine, and accompanied by homemade chips that were to DIE for), and the Lomo Saltado, it's gourmet comfort food! Both had an insane amount of flavor, in a very good way. And the gaucho bread was tasty and useful for dipping in the leftover sauces (the chimichurri sauce that comes with it is somewhat addictive). Were I not blown away by the dishes I just described, I'd be here raving about the foraged mushrooms, the rice, mushroom and broccoli dish (mushroom chaufa), and the crab toast. Oh, we'll be back for sure! (Hopefully in person one day soon--it looks like a great place to eat and socialize once the world returns to normal!). And next time I'm going to try those elotes. This was a great find, thanks to Yelp reviews...and boy were they right! We came in early on a Saturday night and lucked out by not only getting a table, but a great table. The ambiance is homey but classy, but Portland classy, so comfortable! The service was hospitable without being bothersome. The food comes out as it's ready so we ordered in shifts. All of the food was fantastic. It all also had a little kick of spice but nothing prohibitive. We weren't a fan of the Brussels sprouts because they were a bit more greasy then we can eat, but the flavor was so good it almost convinced us to anyways. The scallops were so good I wanted to order another round! Chocolate dessert was fantastic, especially with the wild turkey cocktail that had a coffee taste. It's not listed on their online menu and I can't remember the name, but I want another one right now! The wtcid was good too and had a fun presentation. We first stopped by at night but they were too busy and the wait time was a tad long. So, we decided to try again the next day. We were seated right away and it was outside, which was fine, until it started drizzling/raining. The friendly staff kept asking us if we wanted to sit inside but we were fine. We ordered almost everything from the happy hour menu and I must say, it was a pretty good deal. We had the roasted chicken and poblano empanadas. The crust was crunchy. There was enough chicken in it and not dry at all. It had a well balanced flavor and not salty at all. The cheese was a great addition to it because it was a different texture from all the other ingredients. Sautéed mussels, jalapeño miso garlic butter was the other item we ordered. If you like cilantro, this would be your appetizer. I couldn't taste the miso or butter flavor at all. I really enjoyed this because it was of the cilantro flavor. The mussels were also cooked well, not chewy at all. The bread was a great touch since you can dip it in the excess sauce which they were quite generous with. Another item we ordered was the yucca fritters. We thought they were going to be cut into strips but they were shaped like balls. It was very soft and when we thought it'd be dry, it wasn't. The sauce reminds me of chimichurri sauce, which was done well since not one herb was overpowering the other. Another item we had was the pork anticucho which are pork skewers. The sauce was the same sauce as the yucca fritters. The pork wasn't over cooked. The tomatoes and onions were a great addition to the meal since it gave a different texture and flavor to the dish. Again, we enjoyed the sauce on this as well. Last item we had was the Peruvian fried chicken bites. It kinda reminded me of a milder version of orange chicken. The chicken wasn't dry but I think this was my least favorite appetizer. It was still pretty tasty and cooked well. I just enjoyed the flavors of the other dishes. Overall, the staff was friendly. When visiting Portland, we came here based on several recommendations and it did not disappoint! I'm not sure if they just didn't have the AC running when we were there or if they don't run AC, but it was VERY WARM in the restaurant. Just keep this in mind if it's a relatively warm day when you go, dress lightly it's a relatively small location, and I love the variety of seating options they have (and the fish tanks!) The food was so so good. We started with the White Corn and Cheese Fritters and it came with a really good avacado crema sauce. I got the Pan Seared Scallops and this was the only dish I would give a 4 out of 5 stars for (they were a tad bit salty for my personal palette, but everything else on the dish was fantastic). They also have tapas, which is nice when you want to order a handful of small dishes for the table to share. Love the atmosphere here! There's a giant aquarium for jellies behind the bar and another giant aquarium with some nice reef. Service was friendly and attentive. I'm still not entirely sure how I feel about the food. I opted to go with cheese tortellini. It wasn't just cheese tortenllini, it had roasted purple, orange, green, and regular cauliflower in it -- very pretty presentation! The first several bites were seriously amazing, I loved it! As it started to cool, however, it got saltier and saltier and saltier. It became so salty that I couldn't eat anymore, yuck!! As the cauliflower was consumed (which was perfectly roasted!) I also noticed a really big problem: a lot of the tortellini wasn't just stuck together, there were multiple giant clumps of tortellini. So much for knowing pasta 101! read more

Came here with a friend visiting from Chicago. We got here at 9pm. No one greeted us. When the hostess did show up, she HIGHLY discouraged us from eating there. The first words out of her mouth were that there was at least a a 20 minute wait, all the tables (many of which were empty) were all reserved, that since the food takes a while to make we likely wouldn't have much time to eat or enjoy our meal. She barely asked if we were willing to wait at all. At one point I asked how someone could make a reservation with less than an hour to close (remember how we waited a wait to get greeted: 9:15 by then)and they still were holding the tables for them and she completely avoided eye contact and said, "yeah I don't know." For a place that claims to serve Latin American food, this place sure was rude to two Latin Americans. read more

Wow. There are no words really. ( yet of course I will find too many!) I went to this South American inspired restaurant by recommendation back home. I was told to get the gaucho bread... A nan like bread with chimichurri and salt, and it was beautiful in a very simple way. Then there were Peruvian fried chicken bites (popcorn chicken) in fermented hot, honey, corn, basil aioli. Again, no words. And finally plantain and black bean empanada. I washed those down with a nonalcoholic drink called "island time" composed of dhos bitter orange, lychee, honeydew, lime and guava soda. Truth be told I wasn't so sure. I typically don't like guava... and lychees in drinks is something I have only recently accepted in my repertoire, but it was perfect. I was too full for dessert ( and already had a take away bag of leftovers), so of course I ordered banana, caramel pie. It was orgasmic! I usually only get chocolate desserts... so that's saying something! After a few bites it went into the takeaway bag for tomorrow's breakfast... There were far more adventuresome options on the menu such as: grilled octopus with chorizo, Chilean beef and corn pie, wild boar sausages, as well as three kinds of ceviche and a calamarcito Frito that included green apple jalapeno leche de tigre ( is that milk of a tiger?), grilled pineapple, cucumber, and pickled pepper. I'm really not that adventurous...so I stuck to fun but recognizable to me foods...haha! Tyler was my server and he is both sweet and knowledgeable. He really was adorable and very professional. The guy who seated me was lovely too. Unfortunately I did not get his name. Additionally there were two huge fish tanks. One had lots of tropical fish, one of which stared me down most of the meal. He kept mouthing something to me... either "help me" or "feed me", not sure which, but he was a little stalky! The other tank had jellyfish! I've never, ever seen a tank of jellyfish in a restaurant. Went for happy hour and had a lovely experience with the Lechon staff who were friendly and attentive, and the food was great as well! My favorites were the mussels (whatever sauce they use to flavor it = yum) and the fried chicken which was fried to crispy perfection and had a spicy kick to it. Would love to come again. In looking for places near our hotel in Portland (the Hotel Rose), I stumbled upon this highly-rated gem. We love a small plates & shareables dinner, and the reviews of this place were awesome so we tried it and I'm so glad we did. We were seated at a corner table with a lovely view of the restaurant. Upon learning that we were celebrating our honeymoon, we were given complimentary champagne for a toast (lovely touch). The service was amazing and our waitress Isabel (may be spelling that wrong) was awesome at explaining the menu. She really gave us some excellent recommendations). We ended up sharing the brisket empanadas (yum!! The best empanadas I've had in my life), the corn & cheese fritters, shrimp ceviche, pork belly baocitos and the scallops with corn polenta. It was the perfect amount of food. My husband's favorite bite was the pork belly, and mine was the scallops with the polenta (soo soo good), but we both found a close second in the empanadas and the ceviche. We ended the meal with the chocolate dulce de leche with the raspberry on the side as my husband doesn't like berries and I LOVE them. Another great menu choice. We finished the dessert despite being full in like 2 minutes flat. I also love that they have non-alcoholic cocktails on the menu. My husband doesn't drink and doesn't typically get to partake in fun cocktails, but he was able to try the Lost Collins last night and ended up ordering two because they were so good. Again, our server Isabel was awesome. We're leaving for Seattle next and she gave us some awesome food suggestions as she had lived there for quite a long time. We're excited to take her recommendations. The only thing I regret about this night was that we live so far from Portland and likely won't be back for many years, because this was in the words of my husband "one of my top 10 meals of my life" after he's eaten in Paris, Spain, London, New York, and some of the best restaurants in Philly.
