The food here is insanely delicious! I stopped by on a Friday evening around 5:30pm and my friend and I were promptly seated at one of the high tables. We got to sit in front of the gorgeous fish tanks which definitely added to the atmosphere. We had the plantain fritters, ahi tuna ceviche, fried chicken bites, jicama salad (un-pictured), and lava cake! The fried chicken bites are crazy good, the corn and basil are flavors I wouldn't expect in a dish like this but they marry beautifully and elevate this from basic. The lava cake was also another stand out for me, not only is it gluten free but also it is decadently chocolately and comes paired with pistachio gelato, yum! This is a long-overdue review update from our July visit. My daughter and I explored as many vegan dishes and restaurants as we could during our summer trip to the PNW. During our previous Lechon visits we hadn't noticed their vegan options, but we felt sure we'd be able to cobble something together from the many small dishes they offer. Turns out the chef has been making a dedicated effort to create more plant-based dishes. In fact, when he learned from the server that we were asking how certain plates could be adapted, he spend the rest of the evening looking over our table and taking personal care of us. We felt completely pampered! It was a wonderful experience. The most memorable dish of the evening was the chunk steak. If you have the opportunity to try that, I highly recommend it even if just for the experience, although it is delicious as well! You will not believe your mouth and will swear that you are eating braised beef. When a meat-based pastel the choclo erroneously arrived at our table, my daughter - the actual vegan at the table - was quick to leverage the mistake by offering to keep most of our mushroom saltado to herself so that I could eat the misrouted pastel. It's always a good compromise when both sides are happy. After three months, I still remember how much we enjoyed the kohlrabi and jackfruit ceviche. Leche the tigre is the best part of a ceviche so you won't miss the fish, but the jackfruit was a great stand-in for that anyhow. As always, my daughter ordered the gaucho bread that she's obsessed with. She's been known to hoard it during the meal so that she can eat the leftovers later at the hotel. For cocktails, the "what the chef is drinking" option is always good. This time it came with a tiny bottle that literally had smoke in it. Such a fun touch. We ended the evening with the vegan lava cake. Portland is lucky to have a fantastic array of vegan dishes and restaurants. I'm not local so I don't know whether Lechon is necessarily known for this (yet?), but the chef deserves major kudos for creating delicious and interesting options for plant-based eaters. Too often I've watched my daughter have to rejigger menu items only to end up with something that has been stripped of all flavor and interest. If you are vegan, you will not experience that at Lechon. You will be able to have an indulgent and celebratory meal that was made with care and intent. read more

Came on a Tuesday night with a big appetite and ordered the "what's the chef eating" set menu. Everything on that menu was done well, especially the crunch chocolate cake it's like a Nutella crunch bar on berry jam. Wonderful flavors in each dish. I did have some difficulty with the steak (picaña) as it was very tough, hard to cut, and tasted unseasoned. It was near the end of the night and I felt bad for returning the steaks but I'll not get that dish again. I did want to say that their scallop ceviche was excellent! Made a reservation on a Friday at 4:45pm, because there were no other ressys until 9pm. To our surprise, they were running a happy hour until 5pm, so please note it's only for 1 hour! The staff were very friendly and always checked on us throughout our meal. My friend and I came hungry so we opted for a wide variety of items on the meal. Brisket Empanadas (5/5) - a must get! absolutely delicious and filled with very flavorful brisket and cheese. It was perfectly fried and I enjoyed every bite with the sauce it came with. Shrimp Ceviche (3/5) - I think this was more of a personal preference, but I didn't like the amount of tangyness from the lime. The chips were also a bit over salted. Pork Belly Baocitos (5/5) - loved the texture of the charsiu because of the crispy ends. The flavor of the charsiu was also different from the traditional chinese way. I also loved the acidity and freshness the picked veggies. Elote (5/5) - the corn ribs were perfectly sauced and seasoned. Plantain Fritters (5/5) - loved that it tasted like a corn fritter and also came with a savory chile verde sauce that balances the fritter. pro tip: dip the chips from the ceviche with this sauce! Lomo Saltado (2/5) - quite disappointing, the teriyaki sauce didn't go well with dish and tainted the flavoring overall. Steak was cooked perfectly. Grilled Octopus (3/5) - the chorizo in the dish was overpowering the octopus and potatos. I thought i'd be able to put the chorizo to the side but it was overwhelming the overall flavor. Second drink was "Second Wind" which was different but also super tasty Food: Not to sound dramatic, I would trade my third child's left kidney for the recipes to the dishes we devoured. As soon as I took that first bite, I floated out of my seat, my soul ascended, glanced back at my levitating body, and whispered, 'This is what nirvana feels like.' Then, just as suddenly, I was yanked back into my chair, grounded by pure culinary ecstasy. We started with a scallop over polenta that was divine, followed by flank steak that left us speechless. What I love about LeChon is how well they incorporate flavors into their dishes through different sauces. The vibes lean more toward the rustic side, with dim lighting that adds to the ambiance. I also think it's cool that they have both a fish tank and a jellyfish tank for decoration and viewing! But let's get to the food. I think when a dish has an amazing sauce, it enhances the flavors you experience -- like an explosion in your mouth. Some of my personal favorites at LeChon include the grilled prawns, pan-seared scallops, grilled octopus, foraged mushrooms, and the steak tartare. I've never had prawns like this anywhere else. Sure, there are many ways to prepare and cook prawns, but the way LeChon does it is just different. The grilled prawns are served with salsa matcha, guajillo aioli, and chives -- all of which blend beautifully with the shrimp to create a flavor explosion. Aside from the food, the service is wonderful as always. The staff is very attentive and focused on providing a great experience. Came for mid day ceviche and left with an experience! Each dish was explained to us when presented and the flavors were otherworldly. The ahi tuna ceviche melted in your mouth. I dined here for dinner during my stay in Portland. I asked my server what would he suggest and he offered many items that he liked. I ended up ordering the grilled octopus, half of the farmers green salad, and the flank steak. I really enjoyed the salad. The champagne vinaigrette dressing was creamy and coated the mixed greens, goat cheese, and pine nuts. All the components worked well. If I didn't order the octopus I would have enjoyed the regular portion fine. The grilled octopus was tender to the bite. I really enjoyed the fried chorizo and potatoes. The saltiness of the chorizo and chimichurri accompanied the octopus very well. The flank steak was also a good choice to choose. It was cooked rare and served with a bacon jalapeno jam. The bacon jalapeno jam was pure heaven. Salty and crisp, it added flavor to the the steak. Service from my server Jesse and the rest of the staff were perfect. I loved everything we ordered and its Tapas Style: Drink: Two Man Drink Favorites in this order--Forged Mushrooms, Neiki Style Short Ribs (basically delicious Korean bbq short rib), ahi tuna ceviche, brisket empanada. I didn't get to try the Elote or Peruvian Chicken bites but heard great things. The main con is they don't do anything special for birthdays so I wouldn't recommend coming for a special occasion. Here's what we tried: Brisket empanada - very good, great dough texture, flavorful filling Plantain & black bean empanada - much too sweet for my taste Gaucho bread and chimichurri - excellent, best thing on the menu Peruvian fried chicken bites - quite good with a great crispy texture but covered in a sauce so cloyingly sweet we couldn't eat much of it Pork tacos - very good, lots of pork, my companion's favorite dish Pork belly baocitos - great flavor, but again too sweet Ahi tuna tiradito - just ok, sauce was overwhelming and too much of it Pastel de choclo - Small looking dish that is actually filling. But there is no discernible corn. The topping is probably made with polenta or something corn-y but no kernels to be found anywhere. They describe it as a beef and corn pie. But if you're a Spanish speaker from Latin America and see the words "Pastel de Choclo" (literally Corn Pie) you are expecting a very different dish. So that was misleading. Still, the flavor was very good. Will definitely be back to try more items. I think the key might be to order strategically to create balance. Since a lot of the dishes either have very strong or very sweet flavors, it's up to you to order some fresh items to balance it all out - which we should have done. read more

We were super lucky with a last minute reservation. We also got to experience the happy hour menu. The food was divine. Each item that came hit as well as the next. My favourite items were the fried plantains (what was that oh-so-good dip?). My partner enjoyed the fried chicken and pork belly baocitos. The foraged mushroom toast was also a pleasant surprise. Our next favorite was the elote, but it was a little too mayo forward for me and I wanted the spice and citrus to pop more. The Gaucho bread served with bone marrow was delicious but we'd have liked another fresh element to balance the heaviness (parsley, etc.) We enjoyed the chimi but since it included an oil element it didn't contrast with the marrow enough to balance the dish. Wow is the only way to describe everything we enjoyed. From the crispy chicken bites to the scallops, ceviche, Lomo Saltado, and gaucho bread, everything was delicious and beautifully presented. The front of the restaurant more south than the back. The front was smaller tables and a bar type seating area. The back was larger tables and a bit quieter. We ate there last week and ordered ALOT of food including the salad. After we all had some I was moving it around on my plate and discovered a white live worm on my plate. DISGUSTING. The manager said he would instruct the staff to clean it better. How could this happen at these prices?
