This past Saturday a group of us ladies visited Lefkes for my friend's 30th birthday dinner. Back in October, a reservation was made verbally over the phone for seven people. The same reservation was confirmed the day before our highly-anticipated night out. Confirmation of this reservation was emailed to us via Opentable from the hostess. Over the phone the hostess explained to us Lefke's new policy; there was a two-and-a-half-hour time cap for each dinner table. I wish we could say we enjoyed a two-and-a-half sit-down dinner at Lefkes. This was not the case, however. When we arrived there at 8 pm, we were told our table was not ready. We were a little confused as to why - wasn't the two-and-a-half-hour time-cap rule put in to prevent things like this from happening? We were encouraged to wait at the bar. It was crowded and hard to get a drink. Fifteen minutes later we checked back in with the hostess about the status of our table. We were told if we wanted the table we must "buy a bottle". What the hell? Buy a bottle? We were there for dinner, not to go clubbing. What kind of last-minute rule is this? We were met with an incredibly sour and careless attitude by the Manager named Yuri. No apology was made on the behalf of this man - he could truly care less about our troubles. Forty-five minutes later we were seated. It was a disappointment to discover we were going to have to sit outside in a tent and not enjoy the main dining room with all the action, as we had originally requested. We had a lovely view of the parking lot from our tent. In fact, it just so happened we were lucky enough to be given front row seats to the valet show - the glaring headlights of vehicles shining in our eyes as they pulled in to park. It was cold, but despite having asked repeatedly, no one turned it on. (Wasn't one we could turn on ourselves.) We hoped management would do the right thing by making sure we were comfortable and happy and received excellent service. (Wishful thinking!) We were lucky if we got anything as little as a friendly look from anyone who worked there. Needless to say, we sat and waited for ANOTHER fifteen minutes before we were even properly greeted. We received a whole lot of nothing - not a glass of water, not a menu, not a "be right with you". Finally, some schmuck named Boris with an ear piece walked up like he was a member of the secret service. He extended us a very insincere apology. It seemed as though it pained him to admit anyone there had done anything wrong. Any other establishment with half the capacity and half the reputation would know the importance of making things right. They would have had the decency to at least send a round of drinks on the house. In fact, the place where we actually did eat did this for us as they could see the frustration written all over our faces. Not this place. Free drinks must be too costly for the busiest place in Englewood Cliffs. Boris did, however, offer us a table inside the DJ room after dinner. But considering the stunt they had pulled, we didn't trust they could guarantee us a spot if we couldn't even get a God forsaken glass of water and a heat lamp.
Eventually, our waiter comes over. He was very nice, but clearly overwhelmed. He apologized and assured us we would be taken care of. He said the place is normally this busy on a Saturday night and it's "just the way it is". He suggested we each order two drinks each so we don't have to wait an hour in between rounds. Unfortunately, he couldn't make good on his promise as the first drink order took thirty minutes. And so we did the only respectable thing a group of seven girls who've been treated poorly should do - we got up and left! But first we had to retrieve the birthday cake from the hostess which was another huge waiting fiasco! During this time, manager Yuri shook my hand with a huge smile, not knowing I was with the same group of very pissed-off women. He asked me how my evening was. I explained very calmly that it was a nightmare. His face changed. He said nothing. HE WALKED AWAY. Never in my life have I experienced such poor hospitality at such a well-known place. Finally, we retrieve the cake and walked in the freezing cold in dresses and high-heels to a nearby restaurant called Grissini's. They graciously welcomed us with a wonderful dinner with the service we deserved. It's obvious they receive much of Lefkes dissappointed overflow. We were not only grateful for their great food and service, but felt extremely lucky to have found a decent restaurant to feed us before their kitchen closed. We would have otherwise found ourselves at the local diner celebrating a thirtieth birthday. It was the unapologetic, hideous attitudes of the managers that made this pill a particularly hard one to swallow. Suffice it to say, their greed and lack of concern ruined my friend's birthday and the evening for all of us. Shame on you, Lefkes. SHAME ON YOU. Sadly, none of us will never go back. read more
