Goodness this place is delicious. I really enjoy their house sauce they spread on their delicious burgers. They have thick shakes that are made from soft serve. So it's really whatever fits your taste in regards to shakes. The fries though (Whoop Whoop) we're extremely fresh, hot, and seasoned with salt but my goodness that salt was magical. I've looked far and wide for an In-N-Out equivalent ever since moving to WA and although this place is not the same as In-N-Out, the burgers keep me coming back again and again. This is quite literally a little surf-themed shack in a deserted parking lot next to a dive bar. There is always a line of people waiting to order at their window, with some outdoor seating available. Usually this place is bustling with cars, people, and dogs. I usually get the deluxe cheeseburger and onion rings. They used to have fried pickles but since COVID that has disappeared off their menu. (PLEASE BRING THEM BACK.) They also have a variety of shakes and every flavor I've tried is excellent. You can also mix flavors! They also have corn dogs, hot dogs, fish and chips, and veggie burgers. I always leave satisfied. So glad I live down the street! I wish their hours were more extended for those late night cravings, but I get it's hard for a mom-and-pop place to run so many hours in a day. read more

I always get the veggie burger because I love the patty and mushrooms, although once I got home and someone never even put them on. I moved to the Tacoma WA area almost 2 years ago and have been on a mission to try various local restaurants...today I chose a lil place off of 27th St, University Place that looked like it used to be the dining option for a long forgotten Drive In. Now named Lefty's Burger Shack the building is a throwback to the 70's..think Fonzie and Happy Days...lol. I ain't gonna lie, I been eye ballin this place for at least a year and a half. Problem is that it's on e of those burger places you order and wait outside and lord knows how much it rains here the rest of the year, can I get an AMEN? so it had to wait until a perfect day and the right time. I live in Steilacoom but go to Tacoma frequently to visit different places, mostly the Triple Knock bar and pinball fun place... (Another business and another review), anyhow on the way to and from there we (hubs and I) always pass this burger shack...looks like a hole in the wall, BUT...2 weeks ago we finally got some sunshine and on the way to the pub we saw a line around the block at "Lefty's"...I told my hubs, we going there the next time we come to Tacoma, I gotta try it! 2 weeks later (today) we decided to go to Point Defiance and then headed to McMiniman's Elk Temple (oh yea, another great review) and on the way home we were looking for some quick food to take home, hubs was thinking Asian, then we came up to the corner of Grandview Dr and 27th St and, I look across and saw Lefty's...I was like "stop, forget the Asian, today we havin burgers" Needless to say we stopped (Yea I AM the Boss...well sometimes..it really didn't take much twistin of his arm..lol)! It was busy as ever and took a minute but, not as long as I thought it would be based on number of people! We ordered a double cheese burger and a single cheeseburger, both with fries, as well as an order of chicken strips, and order of fried shrimp and a chocolate milkshake. When they called my name we grabbed our grub and headed back down Grandview toward home. BOTH of us were sneaking bites from stuff in the bags (smelled delish) and before you know it chicken strips and shrimp were history...got home and took the rest out of the bag and discovered an order or onion rings that we never asked for included somehow...OMG...those onion rings...to DIE for yall!! (Of course we ate them)! Finished up those burgers and the milkshake and decided on a two person vote that this was one of the BEST take home meals we had eaten in Washington in the entire time we have been here!! Lord that food good....believe me, I don't eat much fried food these days but if I did, Lefty's would be my Go To place!! If you haven't eaten there yet, you missin out!! Nuff said ... I honestly hate that I am writing this review but it's what I do. I try new places and I review them. I had hoped judging by the enormous lines that consistently form outside of this establishment that is was a sign of good things to come. Boy was I wrong! We visited on a day when the weather was not too good and so there was no line to wait in on this day. We placed our order from the simple menu on par with burger stands like Dick's or In-n-Out. You know, we offer a burger, cheeseburger, or the doubles of those with a couple other things type of menu. My wife ordered a double cheeseburger and I got a double, bacon burger. We both opted for the half n half consisting of half french fries and half onion rings but that was seriously disappointing. Overall they just aren't good. I really don't see why people line up for this food. They boast that their burgers are made to order but the beef was tough and grisly. Not like it had any filler but like they didn't trim the meat before grinding it. I honestly doubt that they grind their own beef though. The half and half was more like the 90/10 with a pile of store bought frozen crinkle cut french fries and then 4 onion rings per order. It's a shame too because they actually have the second best onion rings that I've had anywhere so I was a bit disappointed to only receive 4 of them. Their fry sauce is the basic mayo and ketchup but it wasn't mixed very well and we both ordered cokes with no ice that both came with ice so the attention to detail is lacking as well. We've been looking for a good burger joint to frequent and I'm sorry to say that Lefty's is just not that joint. What makes people line up and wait in long lines for this food? I've wanted to stop by Lefty's for the last few years and never got around to it was so glad to have the chance. I ordered two burgers the first dbl cheeseburger w/bacon was well cooked a little charred but not too noticeable, the beef in itself was fresh yet one of the awesomely greasy burgers I've had in Tacoma. The second burger which was just a deluxe was a definely over cooked, but the first burger was so good I didn't even care. Like that they give the option to order both fries and onion rings with one side. The customer service was great for it being a couple of kids. Lefty's is a neighborhood burger joint nestled in University Place/Tacoma. I had the DBL Deluxe Cheese burger, frunions (fries/onion rings) and a peanut butter milkshake. Everything was delicious and flavorful! I would highly recommend this place. Side note: Be prepared to eat I your car, take it to go as they have no inside dining. They do provide picnic tables, but they're usually all taken especially on a sunny PNW day. read more

I got a double deluxe bacon cheeseburger, Frings (1/2 onion rings and 1/2 fries) and a chili cheese dog w/onions. The burger was very good, well seasoned and great texture! The fries and onion rings were great as well! Cooked perfectly and seasoned to boot!! This is now my neighborhood burger joint! Man I love this place. I don't crave burgers often, but this was really good. I love the fresh toppings, shredded iceberg lettuce, tomato, onion & pickle. The bacon added that extra Smokey salty flavor. Don't forget those fries! Crispy on the outside tender on the inside. If you to put it over the top, I recommend the shakes!
