The second time, we made a reservation but they were actually closed. Well, third time's a charm! We ordered the grilled calamari, Tartufo pizza, and a burger. I would have given a 2-star rating if I base my review solely on the pizza - it was too doughy and flavorless, made it super difficult to eat. The grilled calamari however was excellent, which sort of redeemed the night. The burger was so-so... nothing outstanding about it, but it was not bad. Legno was good. Great service with good staff. Parking. Nice sidewalk seating. Right near the park so you can walk off your meal. A few items are pricey for the area. Bunch of typos on the menu but the lack of attention to detail thankfully doesn't extend to the food. Delicious! Med salad is perfect. Pasta and risotto are flavorful. Everything we had was great. Very nice ambiance. Fast service, very attentive waiter. There was a staff member continuously walking around with the water pitcher. My glass of water was always full. Never had to ask once to fill my glass. We ordered the grilled calamari as appetizer. It was good, but the calamari pieces are small. I had the special which was the Sea Bass Caprese. The fish was very good. It was perfectly cooked and tasty. My husband had the sausage pizza. He liked it but didn't love it. The crust was kind of doughy. I'm not someone that usually complains, and especially not when times are tough during this pandemic. I get raised prices, since I'm sure the $5+ per dish is solely to help keep them afloat, so that didn't bother us one bit. What I don't get is food not being good. Our half chicken was closer to a quarter of a chicken, was bone dry and was only served with about 5 mini potatoes! Our Margherita pizza was COLD even though my husband picked up before our assigned time. When we called to let them know both dishes were inedible, they asked us to bring it back to them. Not the biggest deal for us since we live close, but imagine if you didn't; a huge inconvenience. They also differentiate between a "legno half chicken" and "superrosa half chicken;" we paid for the legno, which makes me wonder how much less they would have served for the superrosa. Unfortunately, we won't be returning soon, which is disappointing considering this used to be one of our favorites. read more

Ended up stopping at Legno when my original stop for dinner turned out to be closed for dining. I had driven by this place many times, so it was an easy decision to give it a try. Sat at the bar where Nick was working and asked for a menu. A good sized beer collection along with a large variety of alcoholic possibilities were on shelves before me. Thumbs up on this. I opted for a Maplewood Nitro Beer on draft and it proved to be a good choice. The menu had decent variety, though scaled down due to Covid times. I decided to try the Diavolo Sopressata pizza. Good choice - the right amount of "zip" to it and cooked just as I like it - not overly burnt. Hit the spot. As I was perusing the beverage offerings, I saw what I thought to be a Grand Marnier VSOP behind the "standard" Grand Marnier bottle on the back bar. Turned out to be a bottle of Grand Marnier 100 - a premium version at $27 / glass. Being in the mood for a polished after dinner drink and having never tried this type of "GraMa" I ordered one. Awesome choice - smooth and flavorful. Also had a great time and good conversation with Nick - he had a fair number of specialty drinks being ordered and it was interesting as he conjured up one after the other. I've said this before and I'll say it again - most any restaurant can make good food nowadays - the difference is in the staff. I took my GF tonight, our server had not only the tables in front of the bar however was also the bar tender and assisted outside. Absolutely delicious food! My boyfriend and I came here for dinner with a specific desire for hearty Italian. This place delivered the flavor. It was superbly seasoned and tasted cooked from scratch. Every dish took a while to come out which we figured was a sign that it was made from scratch and we were right. No bland or meh flavors. Every bite felt intentional. To start we had the crab cake, this was a miss for me.. just not a great crabcake, it was ok but just meh.. we also split the burrata salad which was tasty and the figs were a nice compliment but I feel like it didn't have a dressing or vinaigrette of any kind. Lunch with a friend at this cool looking restaurant with a full bar as well. It had a very nice Christmas tree for the holidays and the place is pretty large and also has an area for a private room if need be. They had a lunch special and decided that it was worth it for $12! You choose from a soup or salad and then an entree. I ordered the minestrone soup and a small personal pizza with mozzarella cheese and some housemade sausage from a brick oven. The soup also came with some really fresh bread, oil and parmesan cheese. The minestrone soup was absolutely delicious, not the usual thicker more dense broth but a very light and flavorful taste with plenty of veggies. I have to say it was probably the best minestrone I ever had, that good. I might come back just for the soup! The pizza was very small and thin with not much sausage but tasted good. Didn't get a chance to try some dessert but I have a feeling that I will return here. They have a huge parking lot across the street so no worries there. The service was also good and checked up on us, although it was not very busy. All in all for a $12 lunch it was a great deal! read more

I've had dinner here, several Happy Hours and now Brunch and I've got nothing but raves on all of it. Portion sizes at dinner are huge and delicious. I've had seafood pasta that was pure perfection for dinner plus a leftovers lunch. My husband had a perfectly cooked filet he's still talking about. Thursday happy hour has the most delicious oysters for $1.50 each that you're likely to find anywhere. Their huge selection of salads is amazing and the side salad is the size most people serve as the big salad. Their soppressata wood fired pizza is fabulous and they make a mean spicy Bloody Mary with a big ole shrimp skewered in it for Brunch. Legno is my favorite neighborhood restaurant in Portage Park so far. It's modern with rustic touches and beautiful inside, service is always on point and they have their own parking lot directly across the street. A random stop in while driving through Portage Park turned out to be a fortuitous one! Saw the large parking lot, the "Italian" and "Gastropub" signage and before I knew it we were pulling in. Do yourself a favor and order the prosciutto wrapped dates with goat cheese. Go ahead, you'll thank me. And a choice of both fried or grilled calamari? Shows it's not poured out of a freezer bag. Tasted great. My wife had a seafood pasta dish and it was superb. I went with the special Filet Mignon. I know, took a big risk ordering that in an Italian gastropub. We live in Portage park and we gave this place a chance one too many. Enough is enough, and last night was the deal-breaker. The service is a hit or a miss consistently If it's crowded good luck with efficient service. Our experience with the bartenders is what made our decision final.
