Dr. Leibowitz did an outstanding job on my dad's eye surgery. He answered all questions and provided detailed information before surgery. After surgery he came out to give us an update and on the follow up visits he never rushed and was always intent on making sure we understood what was going on. I was in a car accident that caused nerve damage to my left eye causing blindness and, after 4 yrs, painful glaucoma. After multiple "second opinions" I was told my best option was to have the blind and painful eye removed. This is a lot for an active, independent, 30 yr old woman to take in. my dr at NV eye surgery referred me to Dr. Leibowitz and even though I was anxious and being nervous he made sure to explain the entire procedure make himself available to answer any and ALL questions. Not to mention that he was highly regarded by every professional/dr/nurse I can into contact with during the entire pre and post surgical process. My eye (or lack there of ) healed amazing! As for the reviews claiming him to be "rude" or having "bad bedside manner" that was not my experience at all. What I feel like ppl forget at times is that as Drs, they can't always give us the diagnosis or prognosis we WANT to hear. Don't know where to begin. Just 2 days post-op so I really don't even know the end result of my upper eye lift. I have had no pain and minimal bruising. But besides the tangibles, it's the intangibles that are worthy of a five star rating. Everyone in this office is amazing. I like when I call during a busy time I receive a very polite 'may I put you on hold question and they actually wait for an answer before putting you on hold for a minute. I spoke with Davina a lot prior to surgery.....she's so good at her job. Always very reassuring and just great. And I liked Dr. Leibowitz from the moment I met him. I have been seeing Dr Leibowitz for the past year or so. I had basal cancer on the eye lid and was recommended by the ophthalmologist then the skin surgeon to Dr Leiebowitz to replace the skin removed form the eye lid. Never had surgery before and was unsure of all the doctors and their procedures. What I noticed first off about this doctor is that he is very exact on what he wants done and the high standards of results he expects. He gave me the whole story, telling me the good outcome expected, but also the liabilities. I consider that as a matter of respect for the patient. Some doctors say everything is great and you never know what the actual story is. I can handle a rough bedside manner if he gets the job done correctly. Surgery is a big deal and can go sideways for any number of reasons. If anything is out with the prep work, he does not fudge it. Get it right, like stop taking the blood thinners at the right time, or do not do the surgery. Yes I was chewed out for not listening and continuing my meds past the cutoff date. And, no, the surgery did not happen that day. I can appreciate that and his staff not accepting close enough as an answer. The surgery went well, but he did not like the way the eye lid closed on a follow up check up. I did not think it mattered, but he mentioned the eye could dry out. I hate seeing doctors in general and especially anyone cutting into me. He gently nudged me into doing the procedure . I just got done with the after surgery check up and the eye lid closes. Yahoo! The bottom line is the patient has the responsibility to get it right. The doctor is the tool to help fix yourself. A dull tool can prolong or mess up the work needed. Dr Leibowitz is a sharp tool that was right for my job. read more

I was referred to Leibowitz for a lower lid surgery by a doctor who I will not name that did it with a warning. He said, "you have to watch out for this guy, he's good at what he does, but he can be volatile." With that in mind, I found in my first meeting with Leibowitz that he was distant and impersonal. He told me that he would have to do each eye separately because he would temporarily stitch each eye shut so I would have no sight in one eye for ten days. I had the surgery done, and ten days later, he took out the stitches. I thought it looked good and told him so. He then asked me to do a Yelp review. I wondered when I would get the other eye done, and he said to set it up with his staff. For the second eye, his staff wanted all the paperwork that my primary and specialist doctors had just done a few weeks earlier for the first eye, done again, plus more tests (blood, EKG, etc.). It was confusing for my other docs since they just did the forms and resupplied all forms and sent them to Leibowitz's office, I called Leibowitz's office to set up a surgery date, and Leibowitz's staff said they had not received the forms. We went back and forth a couple of times until I asked Leibowitz's staff member that she needed to do another check because both docs said they had sent in the forms and test results multiple times. After checking and finding my forms, Leibowitz's staff member told me not to stop my blood thinner until five days before the surgery because that was what my cardiologist put on his form. On the day of the surgery at Summerlin hospital, I got a call three and a half hours before my scheduled time (3 pm). They said Leibowitz wanted me to come in now. I asked if I was just going to sit around until three or if I was going in for surgery when I got there. They said right away. When I got there and was brought back to the prep area and prepped with IV, etc., the nurse said, "you're not going until 3." I was stumped and complained about why and got no reason. When Leibowitz finally came by just before my surgery, he immediately started to chew me out for not stopping the blood thinners on the date he had on his pre-op directions. I told him that it was his staff that told me to stop five days prior because that was what my cardiologist put on the form. Leibowitz then went off on me. "You do what I tell you to do, you understand." I said, "you didn't tell me anything, but your staff did, and they said to stay on the blood thinners until five days prior." He then said again, "you do what I tell you, or your cardiologist can do the surgery." I still tell him he didn't tell me anything, his staff did, and I did what they told me to do. It was bizarre. He kept chewing me out, saying, "You do what I tell you." I thought this is his way of avoiding me confronting why he wanted me to come in three and a half hours early. I ask him when I would get my stitches out since it around Christmas, and my eye would be stitched shut. He tells me he is going to do a different stitch this time that would leave my eye partially open. He said it was just as good as the other technique, which had me wondering why he did the other procedure the first time. Why the different technique? Because he was going on vacation for three weeks, and stitching my eye shut for three weeks was too long. About five days after the surgery, one of the stitches, the one on the inside of my eye, broke. I contacted his office, and they said to take a picture and send it to them, and they would send it to Leibowitz. Leibowitz emailed me with the following response, "That's ok. It did its job." Really? I have never had stitches before that in five days, and the cut had healed. This guy is a complete jerk. A prick, just like some of the others wrote. One last thing, if the second closing procedure that left my eye partially open was just as good as stitching my eye shut, why not do it both times? That way, he could have done both eyes in the same surgery instead of two surgeries. The reason is obvious, MONEY. He could collect on two surgeries. Looking at both eyes, the first eyelid does look good. But the second eyelid droops. There is little difference between the before and after. Is it because of the broken stitch, or could it be that he did it on purpose because I complained? I wouldn't put it past this guy. Leibowitz, you wanted me to do a Yelp review. I cannot give a final review as I only had surgery yesterday for upper eye lid repair but so far I am sick to my stomach by the treatment I have been given by this dr. He was extremely rude during our pre surgery consultation. I did not know how long the recovery period was. All the paperwork said this "you may travel next day". So I asked him when it would be ok to drive, his answer was "use your common sense"!! My next question was when can I return to the gym? Again, his response was "use your common sense"!! I was so upset I wanted to leave the surgery center without even getting the procedure done!! Due to my employment schedule, I am obligated to this week as my leave time so I proceeded with the surgery. I am in excruciating pain in the top outer corner of my eyelid which is not normal. I have a pretty good pain tolerance. I was told by his staff that I have to give it time but Dr. Lebowitz is not seeing patients for the next three weeks so I demanded to see him today. His arrogance is unacceptable as he repeatedly told me that he has done this surgery thousands of times and that the pain is tolerable. He has left me vomiting due to the extreme pain in my outer eyelid. Please, do NOT go to this dr if you expect anything more than a robotic provider. read more

Before I hire a physician, I perform a Fact, not an "Opinion," Check. I want him/her to have been graduated from a four-year college with a sterling record in the teaching of the Sciences. Then, I want to know which Medical School accepted my would-be doctor: Is the institution Top Ranked by the medical and scientific community? Finally, their Curriculum Vitae (CV). I want to know what the physician has done after his/her formal medical training. Dr. Steven Leibowitz' CV is jaw-dropping. He completed undergraduate studies with honors at Brandeis. Columbia Med School. And here's where it gets interesting: Post-Doc Training at Stanford and a Residency at Harvard. His Fellowships (Medical Fellows are doctors who wish to receive further medical training within a sub-specialty, so they can become master practitioners within a niche area of medicine): Fellow in Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Society approved, Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, and Harvard University, Boston, Massachusetts. He has teaching privileges at the institution considered by ophthalmologists as the world's Gold Standard, the Jules Stein Eye Institute, UCLA Medical Center. After a satisfactory Fact Check, I schedule an appointment. Did the office staff appear to be content, capable, and comfortable in the practice? Did the doctor see me reasonably close to the scheduled time? Did he/she listen attentively to my complaint, address its probable cause, and suggest a Treatment Plan in language that I understood? Did he/she invite questions? Note: Had there been a "hand-on-the-door" question that went unanswered, I'd restart my search from scratch. Note that I NEVER base a decision on opinions from people that I don't know and trust. In other words, if you haven't gone to med school, Pal, you probably don't know what you're talking about. That's not a put-down; it's a fact whenever a layman attempts to engage a scientist working at the highest level of his/her profession and attainment. Bedside Manner, in other words, is never a consideration in my decision. The only thing that's important is the individual's diagnostic and treatment skill and competence. I'm not looking for a buddy; I'm looking for a healer. I've discovered that Steven Leibowitz is the guy that other Ophthalmologists come to when they have questions. I am most fortunate to be a patient in this remarkable man's Las Vegas practice. Bottom Line: My experience with Dr. Leibowitz, a double Blepharoplasty, was such that I happily recommend him without reservation. read more

He removed a basil cell carcenoma off of my lower lid, and had to reconstruct about 3/8 inch of where my eyelashes laid. He moved my lower eyelashes over and blended the scar into my laugh lines. One of the worst medical experiences I've ever had. Bear in mind that this was 10 years ago so perhaps he has learned from his mistakes on my 3 year old daughter but the type of person he showed himself to us back then doesn't simply change their spots. He was referred to us as one of the best in his field so we were disappointed to meet him. Pompous and condescending all the way through our consultation but very confident. We assumed it was just that "God complex" thing you hear about with gifted surgeons so we stayed on with him for her ptosis surgery. A day after surgery her eye began to look worse than immediately after. The whole area was inflamed and irritated. The surgical center staff had warned us not to be alarmed so we held our breath. The next day was noticeably worse - very red and puffed out. We called his office and was told he'd call us back. Hours later he finally returned our call and barely listened to our description of our 3 year old girl's eye condition. He talked over us telling us that parents always overreact to normal post-surgical recovery and that we should not worry. I asked him specifically if I could take a picture of her eye to send him and he told me no, that he didn't need to see a picture to know that we were overreacting. The following day her condition was worse. Regardless of what he told us we knew that 3 days after surgery her eye shouldn't still be looking this bad so we took her to Urgent Care. We were at Urgent Care no longer than a few minutes because the Doctors there refused to treat her - they sent us immediately to an Emergency Room because the state of her infection was so advanced. They said they couldn't treat her because they weren't equipped there and that since the infection behind her eye was close to her brain it could be fatal. The Emergency Room doctors jumped into action when we finally got there and stabilized her condition. At one point the primary ER doctor at UMC called Dr.Leibowitz to tell him my daughter's diagnosis (Peri-orbital cellulitis) - he even argued with her! My 3 year old was admitted to the hospital and stayed there for 3 days hooked up to IV drips. Once Dr. Leib found out she had been admitted, boy did his tune change. Suddenly he was bringing her gifts and sucking our asses. To be fair, the infection may have been the fault of the surgical center rather than the surgeon but his cavalier responses to our phone calls, refusal to even receive a picture of her eye, and then his obsequiousness when faced with us later showed us all we needed to know about his character - regardless of his surgical skill. If only we had listened to our impulses when we first met this disgustingly rude man. read more

I have had nothing but good experiences with Dr. Leibowitz. I had a specialty eye procedure done at the UCLA Jules Stein Eye Center, but I see him in his Las Vegas office. As for the Stein Eye Center, the friendliness of all the staff, the cleanliness of the entire building and the work of the doctors involved have all been exceptional. I have had many, many surgeries and have worked with multiple doctors and facilities and can testify this one is top notch. As for the office in Las Vegas, the staff has always been attentive and Dr. Leibowitz has been very easy to talk to and communicate with. I feel like I have found a gem with Dr. Leibowitz. read more

Dr. Leibowitz is the best eye surgeon in Las Vegas/Los Angeles! He is really an artist when it comes to the eye. My son had a blocked tear duct and had the traditional eye probe with another opthamologist that was unsuccessful. The next step by any other doctor would have been to put a tube in his eye, however, doctor Leibowitz knew that the tube would likely be unsuccessful in my son's case, so he put the tube in, but also performed a DCR surgery. He gave me the option to drive out to UCLA for the surgery where he could perform it endoscopically. I took him up on the offer and am so glad I did! The surgery was a complete success and he had no scar because it was performed endoscopically. My son's eye was so bad that it became crusted shut every time he slept. It was such a relief to finally see a doctor that could resolve the problem in one surgery! Sure enough, the tube came out shortly after the surgery, but because he also performed the DCR, there was no issue. The option to go out to UCLA for surgery was definitely a huge benefit. I'm so grateful that I found Dr. Leibowitz, I recommend him for anyone who needs eye surgery. read more

He's a pro. Does a good job. If only he would tell the surgical facility to ask the patient for their pharmacy so that the surgical facility could call in the prescription it would make the after-surgery experience much better. Box Canyon Surgical Center sends the paitent home with a paper script, so they have to go to the pharmacy and either wait or come back later. Not good after you've just had anesthesia and surgery. They should ask in advance and phone in the prescription. The golden rule....do unto others.... read more

UPDATE: I had my surgery to correct my eye issues. I needed three different issues corrected. I opted to do everything at once in an outpatient center. I figured it was one surgery and one recovery. I happened to experience a lot of bruising and swelling, but no pain. Yesterday I went for my final post operative evaluation. Success! My eyes look exactly as Dr. Leibowitz stated they would. I still look like myself, except no more drooping lids. I can recommend Dr. LeibowiItz without reservation. He's very knowledgeable, and took the time to answer all of my questions. PREVIOUSLY: It was only my first visit, and I tend to be a bit of a skeptic so that's why only 4 stars. Once I have my eye surgery I'll come back and review again. Dr. Leibowitz, was very pleasant, knowledgeable, and in spite of his years of experience has his ego firmly in check. He shares his knowledge but doesn't pressure you into any treatments. You are always in the driver's seat deciding what route you want to take. He will give you options, and share information, but in the end it's ultimately your decision. My husband has a severe case of Grave's Disease and when both eyes began to bulge and cause him a lot of pain, I found Dr. Leibowitz being the only specialized physician in Las Vegas to handle my case. He did three decompression surgeries and saved his eye sight. Although, I was frustrated that it took a year to complete, he advised that this was going to be a long process. We stayed patient and he is doing so my better. His situation continues and and we have more work to do, but I trust in Dr. Leibowitz to help my husband through this disease. read more

I have to agree with what some of the others have wrote, "This guy is a complete jerk". I was referred to Leibowitz for an upper eyelid lift (Blepharoplasty). When I had my first meeting with Leibowitz he tried to talk me into having my surgery done in California and having a brow lift done at that time as well. (For more money of course) I almost did that but his staff told me it was to late to change my mind. That was 3 weeks before the surgery was to be done here in Las Vegas. My surgery was the day before Thanksgiving and I was the last patient of the day. When my surgery was done and I was being released, the nurse made a comment to me and my partner that the left eye is watering a lot for some reason and that she would send me home with extra tissues for it. We were not even a mile away and the pain in my left eye was getting bad. By the time we got home I was really in pain. I had my partner look at my left eye because it was terribly painful and watering uncontrollably. I thought I could see a cut on my cornea. My partner confirmed my observation and I called Leibowitz right away at his home in California that evening. When I told him what I had discovered he repeatedly screamed at me on the phone and said "That's impossible!!!, and accused me of scratching my eye myself. He did not offer any help or tell me what to do for the pain. He belittled me and hurt my feelings. What a terrible way to treat a patient!!! So not knowing what to do I suffered horrible pain for the next 5 days until I could get in to see my own eye doctor. My own eye doctor took one look at my eye and was immediately angry at Liebowitz and could not believe what had happened to me. He said the cut was very deep and very serious and it was obvious that it was done with a very sharp instrument and could not possibly be a scratch. It was a straight deep cut and it also cut the flap from my Lasik surgery that I had had done 20 years ago. My eye doctor was very concerned about that and the fact that I had double vision in my left eye from the cut. He immediately had his staff fax the findings to Leibowitz. My eye doctor also asked me if Leibowitz had put in eye shields to protect my eyes during surgery. When I replied no he got even madder at Leibowitz. My discharge papers had a follow up appointment with Leibowitz in 3 weeks after the surgery. At first I was not going to go to it because of what he had done to me and the way he blew up at me on the phone. To say the least I was terrified to go. However I changed my mind and I wanted to see what he was going to say to me after he read the fax from my eye doctor. When I got to the appointment I asked his staff if Leibowitz had seen the fax from my eye doctor. They said they never got the fax. I immediately called my eye doctor and had them fax it again while I was in Leibowitz's exam room. When Leibowitz examined my eye he raised his voice and rudely said, "I have no idea how you got that cut"!!! He went on to say that he was sure he did not do it. He did not offer any help with fixing what he had done. Instead he quickly dismissed me from his office with the following instructions. He said, "Make an appointment with the girl at the front desk to see him in 4 weeks". When I asked for what reason do I need another appointment, he said, "You might want enhancements to your eye lids and we can schedule the surgeries at that time. I almost fell on the floor in shock. It is all about money with this guy. He could care less what he did to me!!! This guy is an idiot if he thinks I would ever let him get near me with another surgery. The first one was a nightmare and not at all good. He did not finish the left eye and the scar is crooked and there was little difference between before and after. I spent have spent many months seeing my eye doctor trying to repair what Leibowitz has done to me. read more

This is an update to my original May 2017 review. Dr. Leibowitz performed surgery on me in June at UCLA. He was caring and concerned about me when he arrived to talk to me and my husband about the procedure. He took the time to tell my husband exactly what he was going to do and what to expect. He made me feel very comfortable as I was nervous. Once done I learned he didn't have to do as much as expected. He first tried to flush the duct to remove the obstruction before moving forward with entire surgery. It worked!! He could have just gone through with the lengthy invasive procedure which had already been approved but he took a chance for my benefit and it worked. I am so grateful to him. My problem is completely solved. I am so glad he gave me the option of going to UCLA. Had I had this done here in Vegas he would have had to cut my face open because they do not have the same technology here. UCLA is amazing. First class care all the way. I was told that Leibowitz. had a bad bedside manner and that is true. I was told also that he was super competent, completely untrue. Firstly, he did not know what surgery I was having when he dropped in pre-op because he didn't have my file. He was performing surgery on 8 others that day so getting the right chart was fairly critical. I went home after surgery and my eye bled out and I could see nothing out of it for over 2 hours. Then I was taken to ER via ambulance. The hospital called him but he never came or had someone else fill in for him. Even when I returned for my 3 minute "follow-up" he never mentioned the emergency room visit. Now, it turns out I have to have additional surgery. He didn't complete the job. Well, how could he with 8 other patients lined up. After getting about $12,000 in fees he still had the audacity to bill me for an additional $950. DONT TRUST him , he is the worst doctor I have seen ever,i had a tumor under my eyebrow and he did a surgery on me and he supposed to take it off and now I pass 7 weeks , still is there, and when I contacted him , he said that he took half of the tumor, but if I want I have to pay again that he take off the rest ...
