Randomly chose this, and I'm glad I did - it turned out to be a great experience. Sat at the bar and ordered four mezzes and some wine. The service was welcoming and attentive. Started with the grape leaves - they were too cold, otherwise well done, not too mushy or stringy. Next were the falafel, which were large balls that came with some lightly pickled cauliflower and jalapeno slices in a tahini-yogurt-y type sauce. The falafel had an interesting flavor, the cauliflower was perfect, and it was a substantial dish. The sujuk Armenian sausage was zesty and served in a light tomato stew. The haloumi, which was rather expensive at $23 for fried cheese, was nonetheless tasty and in the end worth the price; the pomegranates provided a nice texture, juice and sweetness contrast. The Lebanese blend red wine from the Bekka Valley was a good accompaniment; light and slightly fruity, like a gamay. read more

Oh Detroit! Detroit reminds me of an ex-partner who no longer wants to maintain a friendship (and sometimes that's a good thing). Dinned with my parents over the Holiday season. The food was awesome. We started with the lentil soup, which was an awesome purée of goodness. Next we ordered the Baba ghanoush appetizer which was pure perfection, we had to order it twice. The item includes pomegranate seeds-and my mom can't digest seeds (the seeds are not captured in the menu ingredients, a flaw in the item description). But our server, Christian, was awesome and quickly adjusted and sent out another order. My parents ordered the salmon as an entree and enjoyed it (they said the sweetness embedded was unusual and unique which made it memorable and tasty). Under Christian's recommendation I ordered the cauliflower over the broccoli and I'm glad that I took his suggestion. I also ordered The potatoes which were too salty , I should have ordered the fries. The bread was soft and fresh. What we didn't enjoy and was a buzz killer: The ambiance sucked, it was too dark inside, on top of it being dark outside due to winter. I was expecting more energy from the restaurant manager and the hostess staff-they were as dead as a doorknob...not friendly. I wanted our experience to be more inviting like BESA. Leila is a wonderful upscale Middle Eastern restaurant. I recommend coming here with a group to try the many cold and hot "mezze" or appetizers on the menu. Everything we ordered was delicious: the Confit Garlic, Butata Harra, Eggplant Fettah, Labneh, and the Beetroot & Feta. Many of the dishes are vegetarian. There was a vegetarian in our group and we were able to order meat dishes with the meat on the side. Even though the restaurant was bustling the service was good. The only issue was that it took them a long time to bring out another basket of pita bread. This place is one heck of a hard place to get reservations to. But MY GOD, it's so worth it. Parking: There's some street parking right in front of the restaurant (if you get lucky) otherwise it's pretty difficult to find street parking if you don't want to pay. My husband and I don't like the hassle of going around the neighborhood to find parking so we just parked in the parking garage for $5 about a block away. Less than 1/2 mile. So it was easy for us. Ambiance: Omg. From the moment you want into the restaurant, to your table, and even to the restroom. I was just in awe of the place, beautifully done like all the other CH Group restaurants. Food: I honestly didn't think I would like this place as much as I did, but I already want to go back and try everything else! Wow wow wow! Beautiful Lebanese restaurant with a lovely ambiance and a shaded outdoor patio in Capitol Park. Incredible food! I absolutely loved my Mjaddara, a spicy salad with lentils. It's the most delicious salad I've had in a long time. I loved the fresh jalapeños and dressing, and the sauce that the lentils were cooked in. Such a perfectly balanced dish and plated beautifully too. My friend let me try some of his Mixed Grill dish and the meats were cooked perfectly. So flavorful and tender. Fresh, warm pita bread was a perfect accompaniment to our entrees. For dessert, the pistachio cheesecake blew my kind. Homemade cardamom graham cracker crust, and a raspberry rose whip on top. Top notch food. Cannot believe how much we enjoyed everything that we ordered. We split the baba ghanoush, eggplant fettuh, confit garlic, haloumi and tomato kibbeh. Could not tell you which was our favorite, because everything was awesome. I had 2 of their fig cocktails (cannot remember the name) and I loved it. The place inside is nice, and the valet could actually drive a manual, which was a surprise. Would love to try one of the entrees but all the mezze was so good that we may just end up trying a handful of other plates. I absolutely loved this place and still think about our visit there! We decided on a whim to check this place out and we are so glad we did. Upon arrival, it was pretty busy but we were able to find seating at the bar. The place was dimly lit and they had interesting light fixtures and seating. The bartender was very friendly and gave us recommendations as first-timers. We got a couple of drinks (pomegranate punch and a cocktail), beetroot and feta, chicken wings, and eggplant fettah. Everything from the drinks to the food was amazing and changed the way I felt about Lebanese food. I thought I liked Lebanese food well enough but now I absolutely love it after visiting this restaurant. Beetroot Feta was a big miss for us, it tasted like canned pickled beats from our local Coney Island Greek salad. The Boneless Chicken was ok but it was very greasy and more like an egg-roll than the menu description. Everything else we had was delicious including desert. They had some unique cocktails... we tried a few and they were all great. I rank most items on the menu as very overpriced for Mediterranean food but not for downtown (if that makes any sense). This upscale Mediterranean restaurant is beautifully decorated. I'd eaten at the bar once before and made reservations for weekend dinner this time. Both visits, the service and food were excellent. My only criticism is on seating arrangements for two tops. The tables that seat four look much more intimate and comfortable, but you can't sit there with two people. With the two tops, you are always next to other tables which isn't fun if you actually want to hear the person you're with. Demi, our server, was fantastic. She knew everything that was vegan or needed modifications because she's vegan too. We ordered falafel, lentil soup, potatoes, tomato kibbeh, garlic confit, and mujadara. Then Demi said they had pins colada sorbet for dessert. All vegan. All delicious! Portions are pretty big. We had leftovers. Our waters were constantly filled, plates, cleaned, and checked on. Service was very good. They have a nice cocktail and extensive wine list. Ordered red wine from Lebanon and it was great. Parking is plentiful on the street or in garages. Walked by and the vibe drew us in. The hostess was very helpful and made us a walk-in reservation and we were able to sit within 20 minutes (on a Tuesday around 7pm) despite it being quite busy. We decided to go with a handful of small plates and had a couple of drinks along with the haloumi, ayeres, olives, broccolini, & cucumber and mint salad. The food was delicious and fresh. We came here for a nice special dinner and we were not disappointed! Right in the heart of downtown Detroit and in front of Capitol Park, Leila offers an upscale Lebanese dining experience. The ambience is elegant and moody yet comforting with an awesome open kitchen concept. We were seated at a nice plushie booth with a view of the central bar. We ordered the Fattoush salad, Hummus & Hashwi (aka with ground lamb, seven spice, pine nuts, pomegranate), and the Shish Kebab, and every tasted excellent. The meal came with a plentiful amount of warm, freshly baked pita! The Fattoush was spiced well with zataar and had great crunch from the fried pita croutons. The hashwi was so deliciously lamb-y and fatty cut with the bursting acidic juice of the individual pomegranate grains. The Shish Kebab was moist, charred well, and came with a serving of buttery Lebanese rice. One critique I have is that the beef kebabs were cooked a little bit too well for our taste, but it still was excellent. We also got complimentary Lebanese sundae, and it was absolutely our favorite part of the entire meal. The Ashta ice cream paired so well with the wispy fairy floss and pistachio crunch on top. Located in the heart of downtown Detroit right next to Capitol Park, it's accessible and the perfect spot to go all year round, but especially in the summertime because they have a massive patio that opens up from the restaurant and the summer air can flow through the whole gorgeous interior space! The staff here are also SO friendly and genuinely seem like they enjoy working here, which we love to see! They are also so knowledgeable and recommended stuff throughout the entire menu for us and, given that it was our first time here, that was a huge help! Now for the main attraction - the FOOD! My goodness, everything we got was SO delicious! My friends and I shared everything and did a handful of starters along with the Mixed Grill entrée and it was a TON of food (with a significant amount taken home for leftovers that lasted me easily 3 meals). But if that's not telling enough, I don't know what is! All the dishes sounded so good so we wanted to try a little bit of everything! We got the labneh, tabbouleh, grape leaves, sujuk, arayes, eggplant fettah, and the mixed grill. Everything was phenomenal, but I have to call out the eggplant fettah in particular. I had high hopes for this place but left a little disappointed. The ambiance is great - a beautifully decorated space. However, the cocktails were pretty standard. I did enjoy the Anne Hathaway. I also ordered the Hummus & Hashwi, which wasn't bad, but for $18, I think it was overpriced. I thought the pomegranate gave it a nice punch, but there was a huge pool of oil in it. I had a couple of hours to myself while visiting Detroit, so I decided to spend that precious time at Leila eating and drinking. No regrets! I had heard that Detroit is the epicenter of amazing Lebanese food, and based on what I ordered, I believe that's true. Because I was by myself, I pulled up to the bar. You can order anything on the menu at the bar, so I ordered one cold meze and one hot meze: the baba ganoush (which comes with pita) and the lentil soup. Yes, I'm that person who orders soup at a bar! Anyway, the lentil soup was delicious and earthy salty and studded with soft squares of carrot, and the baba ganoush was delightfully garlicky and topped with pomegranate seeds. The star of the show was the pita, which came out steaming hot. They have a wood fired oven right outside the kitchen, and I was told me that they just "keep churning out pita all day," so the pita is always fresh. This was probably some of the best pita I've ever had, and I kept eating it well after I was full and my stomach was telling me to stop. They have a nice selection of wine, and I got a glass of red. It was a great choice with my soup and spread. The service was excellent, the atmosphere was chill and relaxing, and the music was great. Summer in Detroit means patio dining and one of my favorite places is Leila. Located in Capital Park, Leila has a great patio to lounge and have some good food and drinks.
