Gyro bowl with hummus, salad, and rice. Yum!
Ann W.

When we worked in the Ferndale area, Anita's was one of our regular spots for lunch. It was there that I discovered my long-standing love for garlic sauce; one that turned into an obsession. So, when I learned that another location of this fantastic restaurant was less than 10 minutes away from my current office - I was eager to visit. While this is more of a quick-casual restaurant, think Panera, than the location in Ferndale, it is perfect if you are looking for something grab-and-go. You can order the meal online and pick-up the meal from a separate entrance, which was my routine. When I first started ordering from here, I thought it was the ideal place for when I had back-to-back meetings and can only spare 30 minutes for your mid-day meal. I've had many delicious take-out lunches here, including: Greek salad with chicken shawarma - The bowl included diced tomatoes, cucumber chunks, feta crumbles, briny black olives, sweet beets, thinly sliced red onions, and a good amount of chickpeas. It was so much better than the salads that I make for myself daily. The chicken shawarma was well-seasoned and warm. I nibbled on the salad for most of the afternoon - it was that good that I was always thinking of my next visit here. Greek bowl that included lamb gyro meat served with rice, hummus, salad, and tzatziki sauce and the chicken feta fattoush bowl. The latter is similar to the Greek bowl, no beets though, with chicken. Yum and yum. Gyro sandwich with extra sauce - well-seasoned gyro meat on a warm pita. Mediterranean bowl - Falafel and meat grape leaves were served with mujadara, hummus, and tabbouleh. I typically don't care for falafel but these were delicious. I've also sampled the baklava and banana bread - thumbs up for both of them. Since the new year, perhaps because more and more offices have implemented return to work, turnaround times have been very slow. So now, I'm packing a salad again rather than eating out because of the inconsistent service (hence the lower rating). Which is a shame. I love the food here but I have limited patience for waiting. Incidentally, I liked the overall design aesthetics of the space. It was bright and spacious with good flow between those there to place an order and those there to pick up an order.

Gyro Bowl

Had the gyro bowl with lamb meat. Lamb meat was not very good. One of those meats that you could tell came straight from the freezer and appeared to have the grill marks painted on. Peanut butter shake was very sugary. Wouldn't recommend

Nice helping of food for $12 bucks.

Perfect spot for a quick lunch. I dropped by this place while attending a conference at the Cobo Center. I really have no complaints about AKtakeway. During my visit, I ordered a lunch bowl (about 12 bucks), which came with quite a bit of food. Actually, the shawarma lunch bowl could be divided between two people or two separate meals (lunch and dinner). I would not say that the place is top notch in terms of Middle Eastern food, but it gets the job done. The service was pretty fast, and the workers were really nice. The restaurant is a bit on the small side so there may not be ample seating if you are grabbing lunch during a lunch rush. I guess that's why the restaurant is a called AKtakeaway . . . they want you to take your food away. ;)

Oh how I have been wanting to try this place! I've had this place bookmarked and haven't stoped in. Well, today was the day I stoped in to try AKtakeaway. Upon entering AKtakeaway I was like "oh this is a cute place to get quick lunch on the go." Also it's clean minimalist esthetic I always appreciate. The way they prepare your food is like chipotle style, but they don't ask you about what you want on your bowl. I felt a little confused like are you gonna ask me as I go or do I go over there and wait like Starbucks. Either way you get to watch your food be made. That is always a plus! I did order the shawarma bowl, which came with chicken, Tabouli, hummus, rice, pickles, and garlic sauce. I will say it looked yummy and it tasted yummy. The only thing that made me feel disappointed was the lack of rice. The way they made the bowel makes it look like a lot of food, but it wasn't. It was just a lot of hummus! The hummus ratio was to much and the gave me barely any rice. A ton of hummus and chicken is a mushy experience. So maybe next time I would ask for more rice. So, for the price you pay for their bowls is and the amount you get is not worth it. Yes, it tasted good, but my portions were not equal. When there are places like freshii or chipotle with cheaper priced bowls and more food it seems better pocket wise to go there. Yes, those place aren't Mediterranean flares, but hey. I would recommend getting their shawarma sandwich it's 6 dollars. Save half your coin! Like I said the flavors were yum yum, just small portions. *Don't be deceived by shawarma bowl picture.*

Although this is a bit expensive this place is amazing!! The best hummus ever and the portions for are huge. The shawarma plate is huge and perfect with all the fixings. Also don't forget they have breakfast sandwiches. These are top notch as well. Considering I work next door and walk by this everyday it has become a bit of an addiction. Check it out!!

We enjoyed a light lunch here before the Detroit Free Press marathon. The service was quick and we enjoyed what we ate.

This is my favorite lunch spot downtown. I recommend a Lebanese salad topped with chicken with a side of rice and garlic sauce.

Crispy outside, soft inside, and balanced, not one of those where one flavor stands out. The meat pie was kind of like a stone-fire pizza but with ground meat on top. Sounds weird, tastes amazing. And the hummus with ground lamb and pomegranate on it, so good!! Staff were really sweet. Only thing, they box up your leftovers for you and take the pita with it! I asked for more and they brought it out no problem. Drinks were delish but pricy. The ambiance is next level. It was gorgeous in there. The only thing I didn't like was that they boxed my food for me, but she didn't pack my whole plate. She left out the pita that was on my dish. I also would have loved to take home the rest of our hummus appetizer, but she took it without asking if we wanted it. We asked our server for more pita and she brought it to us no problem. However, we were a group of three and she brought out three slices of pita all in one tinfoil pack... they also brought out all of our leftovers in one bag. It just felt odd that at a high end restaurant they didn't double check. I would rather box up my own food than have you waste the food I was eating. And my own bag is helpful if I need to bring home a random slice of pita because there isn't enough tinfoil to go around ...

I loved the seasoning, spices, and texture. I would order these items again but next time I will have to try some new things. So many things to choose from. Service was great. Sarah was helpful since it was my first time here. She encouraged me to try some of their more popular items but also explained other options on the menu for now or next time. Whether you're in the neighborhood, driving through, or coming from the hospital, this is an easy spot to get to with easy parking out front. Al Tayeb gives you a great taste of Lebanese food and flavors right in your backyard. I will come here again and bring friends.
