My son had been having pain for a week, he could not sleep because it was hurting him so bad, Tylenol and ibuprofen where not helping. Basically WE could not sleep. Seeing my son in so much pain, I felt helpless, Friday I called several offices in the area, six exactly. I get it, everyone is busy and booked, but on the 7th office (Dr Lena) I was able to get my son seen at her office. From the beginning, the receptionist heard my concerns and was able to squeeze him in the afternoon. My son and I arrived 10 minutes early, filled out the new patient forms and was taken for an X-ray in less than 15 minutes. Unfortunately for my son, his tooth could not be saved and Dr Lena said it must come out. She did her thing and because it was a difficult extraction it did take a bit longer and my son did experience slight pain during the procedure but that's expected since he had an infection. I had 2 lower back teeth implants about 2 years ago and unfortunately one of the crowns came off while eating. I called Dr. Lenas office and was asked if I could come right over. I was happy to get the tooth fixed that same day and thought it was kind of Dr. Lena to wave the charge. I felt violated and uncomfortable being in Dr. Lena Zerounian's care. I rarely write bad reviews unless the service is a major RED FLAG. She didn't stop when I told her to. She only used one drilling tool and aggressively pushed it between my gum and teeth. I yelped in pain more than 11 times and told her to stop but she wouldn't. I never been to any dentist that only used one drilling tool, aggressively jammed and pushed into my mouth and "deep cleaned" for only under 3 minutes and left and called it "cleaned". There was also a lack of general cleanliness as tools and surfaces are not wiped down. Dental assistant proceeded to apply tooth polish without covering my clothing which resulted in getting polish all over my collarbone and clothing. I don't think Dr. Lena cares for the ramification of her negligent actions otherwise she would not have continuously do this over and over as reflected in many of the other countless Yelp complaints. I now have to live with the consequences of her negligence and hope that her abuse on my teeth and gums don't leave me with more dental issues. Please read the other reviews as I'm not the only one coming out from my visit feeling off about her practice. My instincts kept firing off telling me something was off and that this isn't normal or okay. I would highly recommend for anyone looking for a dentist to look elsewhere. Do your homework. By far the worst dentist visit I've ever had in my entire life. I don't normally write horrible reviews but this was absolutely exceptional. I showed up to my appointment the first time and was 20 minutes early, so I filled out paperwork and everything and was waiting in the lobby for about 20 more minutes after my set appointment time. By this time the office was swarming with people, so I figured they're just busy. So they finally call me in time be seated. That's it. Just seated in room by myself for 30 minutes. The dentist finally comes in, checks out my teeth, say it looks amazing and walks off. Cue another 20 minutes, I'm fed up, I have other things to take care of so I ask the receptionist what's up. She says there was an issue for today of overbooking. I said "sure fine, that happens will it happen again?" She says no and I rescheduled for next week. The next time I show up 30 mins early. Granted they weren't open yet so I hung out in the nice morning breeze. I go inside and I'm seated in the lobby, no paperwork this time, for about 10 minutes. Things are looking better this time. I'm sat in a room but after 5 mins moved to another room because that room was reserved for someone else, ok, what? Whatever. I move and proceed to wait for 45 minutes until an hour past my appointment time and Dr. Lena finally shows up "hi how are you?" This is the kicker. She proceeds to go to town on my mouth. She hurriedly rams through my mouth, I'm bleeding everywhere. It hurts. I tell her it hurts. She just says "oh you have some gingivitis, brush better." And she leaves. That's it. She probably spent 10 mins destroying my mouth and just leaves. Her assistant finishes me up and gives me a brush to take home. I have never waited so long to be seen only to receive such subpar service. I should have known from all these low reviews but I decided to give them a chance. My mistake. Won't happen again. Last time I visited Lena's was last year to get my teeth cleaned. I scheduled for early morning on a weekday. Even though I was the 1st patient they had, I had to wait 30-45 minutes to actually get the procedure started (annoying, unprofessional). Also, I've never experienced a teeth cleaning so painful! It felt like my gums were being torn apart and there was more blood than I anticipated. Yikes! Dr. Lena just says, "It's a VERY deep clean." She can say that again. That didn't sit right with me. Felt like I just had surgery...wow. Disappointing job on such a simple procedure. DO NOT come here for a teeth cleaning! P.S. I've heard she is better when it comes to more major procedures. TL:DR - an hour late, painful, and incomplete. This was by far the worst dentist experience I've ever had. First and last visit. After coming in an hour late, Dr. Lena tried telling me that she didn't have time for a cleaning, which was the only reason I was there. I told her that it needed to be completed today, since I can't exactly keep taking days off to sit in her lobby, so she grabs a water pik (sets the temperature to arctic blast) and goes to town on my mouth. After seeing I'm almost in tears, she stops and asks if I usually have so much sensitivity during cleanings. No, not even close, this is the absolute worst amount of pain I have ever felt during ANY dental procedure. Then Dr. Lena claimed to turn down the intensity, and continued with her torture. When she finished with the water pik she simply got up and left. Then the hygienist did her little polishing thing, set a toothbrush on the counter and left. The Dr completely failed to do any sort of cancer check on my tongue or mouth and the only comment she made was that I might have a cavity coming on, but she didn't have time to fill it. I've been with Lena for about 6 years now. Recently I went through a year long process of getting a dental implant. First she had to restore the bone by doing a bone graft. Then she put in the implant and months after that I got the crown. What I really loved about the process was her attention to detail and how she didn't rush the process. She would ask me to come in every couple weeks to check up on things. She is very very thorough and wants everything to be perfect. I also have to say that she has the best assistants, Jesus and Yarissa. Jesus is a godsend and should never be allowed to leave that office! I appreciated his guidance and support throughout the process. Yarissa is one of the most patient people I have ever met. Nyree and Rozan are also very friendly and hardworking at the front desk. She is the only DDS there and she severely over schedules herself to the point where she can't handle her appointments. Although Dr Lena seems nice I don't think she cares about the patients she cracked my tooth while she was doing a filling without saying anything . I called and complained about the pain she said it might need minor adjustments. each time I had to book my appointments weeks in advance and she would book about 10 different patients at the same time. she never took responsibility for the cracked tooth and never mentioned about the cracked tooth until I found out from another dentist. Dr. Lena is honestly the greatest dentist! I had an infection in my upper cheek and my regular family doctor said it was a skin infection and gave me antibiotics. I got an emergency appointment with Dr. Lena and she found out that it was caused by my tooth and wasn't a skin infection after all. I haven't received a call back from them and it's been 3 days, I literally just want to ask a simple question about my crowns and sadly their staff is always on lunch break, or not available to answer the phone. Dr Lena is the best dentist I have ever received dental care from. I've had numerous cleaning, fillings and root canals over the years, performed by specialists throughout the world, approximately twenty in all, and I can safely say that Dr Lena is top of the list for quality work and compassionate service. It's unpleasant to go to any dentist for fillings or root canals, but Dr Lena has the kind of personality that puts my distress to ease, and she is so well experienced that procedures are often completed under an hour's time, so I'm able to remain on schedule with my work day. What attracts me most to Dr Lena's dental practice is her friendly personality and the family feeling I encounter among her respectful and attentive team. I also like it very much that her staff are multi-lingual in English, Armenian and Spanish, and how the staff are also parents, therefore very good with children. My child has been going to Dr Lena's since age two and while known to protest beforehand, Dr Lena and her staff have always always helped us get through the potentially difficult procedures, therefore, this is a great pediatric dental clinic, too. Dr Lena has a diverse cliental from every walk of life-- whether rich or poor, she makes time for everybody and offers affordable coverage-- at times my insurance maxes out for which I must then pay out of pocket, but as Dr Lena is true to the Hippocratic oath, she's not one to price gouge, and she's never failed me in quality work. There have been times when a procedure has needed a quick follow up because we were hoping to save a tooth by trying out a filling before a root canal, and for those times, Dr Lena has ALWAYS let me walk in and be tended to-- so her emergency services are also excellent. Another unusual consideration Dr Lena's offered is orange juice for the times I've rushed out of the house and forgot to have a meal beforehand-- this is important for keeping blood sugar levels up when undergoing the stresses of dental work, so I have very much benefited by how she covers all bases. Another matter I'm aware of is Dr Lena's charitable heart. In the past, I've known a retired senior citizen without insurance. The man was suffering and asked me if I knew of a dentist who could work with his budget. Dr Lena consulted with him over the phone and felt his case required urgent assistance so told him to come into her office straight away, to which when he did, she performed several extractions and fillings free of charge, never telling me about this because she's not one to boast about her generous deeds-- but, I suspect that by the appearance of clients I've seen in the waiting room (families on fixed income), there is a personal pride within Dr Lena's soul that makes her practice humanitarian in nature... I can't recommend her enough... I feel good about choosing Dr Lena's practice because in some way my patronage also helps support the community. Lastly, Dr Lena's office is super hygienic, tidy and comfortable with circulated air and lighting. The location is in the heart of Old Town Pasadena in a very attractive Art Deco building with two functional elevators, a pharmacy on the first floor. Her waiting room has a cozy charm with tons of magazines and television to pass time, and the dental rooms have very lovely views of the city and San Gabriel Mountains. If you're in the Los Angeles or San Gabriel Valley area and looking for a great dentist-- Dr Lena's practice is the one to call on... In fact, I've met a patient in the waiting room who relocated to San Francisco but flew all the way out to LA just to get her dental work done by Dr Lena, and I imagine, too, such will be my case down the road. This was hands down the worst dental experience of my life. If you have a choice, which you do, DO NOT choose this business. This was my second appointment here. The first was where I waited 30 minutes after my scheduled time, sat in the chair, the dentist looked in my mouth for 2 minutes and then told me I needed to make a follow up appointment for a cleaning in a month. Mind you, this was after waiting 3 months for the initial meeting. Ok, fine, I can do this. So now, today, I have an appointment at 2p. I arrive at 2, with 1 other patient in the lobby, no one at the desk (just like the first time). After 50 minutes, of no one being at the desk, a woman comes and calls the first patient into a room. A full hour after my scheduled time, I am ushered into a room. There has still been no explanation as to why it took an hour past my appointment time to be seen. (Honestly, i think they were 'at lunch'- but why would you schedule and appointment DURING lunch hours unless they took an EXTRA hour of lunch...) So, now I'm in the room, and wait another 20 minutes before they come in for the cleaning. ***This was the most painful experience I have ever had in any dental visit in my entire life.*** And I've had root canals and plenty of cavities in my life. I tried my best of white knuckle it and just grab the arms of the chair as hard as I could, keep my mouth open, and just hope it was all over soon. ***Not once did the dentist make any notice of the pain I was clearly in, (blood everywhere, wincing, gripping the seat, pained whimpers) *** and the one thing she said was "it looks like you haven't had a cleaning in a while" ---- kind of hard to respond when there are torture device instruments being wedged into my gum line. And also, I first called for an appointment over 3 months ago, ON TOP OF THE FACT there was this little thing called CORONAVIRUS that kind of stopped dental appointments from happening over the past 18 Months. So after about 8 minutes of this tortuous cleaning, she told me to sit up and rinse. As I was rinsing I overheard her say as they walked out of the room "he's bleeding so much and moving around so much" --- so I thought we would get back into it once I had a bit of a breather to spit some of the pools of blood out of my mouth. Sat down, waited a few minutes and then the assistant came in to let me know i was done. That was it. I asked if there was anything else I needed to do and she just said nope, thats it. I truly feel violated. On top of the hour plus wait time with no explanation. I literally had to make a yelp account to make this review. I came to Dr. Lena because I needed to get some dental work done. I came in for X-Rays and she told me I had a few cavities that I needed to get filled (which I knew from all the sugary coffee I have daily) and that she could do a few fillings that same day and have me come back another day that week for the others. I'm so glad I decided to get my fillings done because all my discomfort I had instantly disappeared. Took about one month for my first dental appt. at this office. My appt was at 1pm and when I walked in there was no one at the desk and no acknowledgment of my presence for 15 mins! WARNING: Please read this before thinking of going to Dr. Lena. I had the most horrible dental experience of my life. She said that I needed a deep cleaning and that she would do it herself and not use a dental hygienist. I sat in the chair and she immediately began the procedure. The pain was immediately unbearable but I tolerated it. I squirmed and tears from the pain were streaming down my face but there was no response from her. After she finished the bottom she stopped and I asked her if there was any way she could numb my gums. She said I can't because it would take 10 injections. She never offered any numbing medication whatsoever. She said I can stop now if you want me to but I'm halfway done. I let her finish. It was cruel for her to not have numbed my gums before such an invasive procedure. I felt like I was in a Third World country with no access to numbing medication. This is unacceptable and I hope she stops practicing barbaric dentistry in 2021. I wish I read the many reviews before deciding to trust her with my dental care. read more

The doctor is really great and very helpful and is experienced but the receptionist is a real character. She can be really rude on phone. I don't know if it's a cultural issue or that's a part of her personality. The strange part is she looks pretty different in the office and its on the phone where she shows her real colors. I'm pretty sure that this is a real bad influence to the office. As far as the parking is concern, it's really really expensive and they don't validate it. I would recommend to park on Madison even if you find it. The other issue with this office is that it seems like they think that you have all the time in the world and they will not even bother to tell you if they need extra time. This office will let you wait for easily 2 hours and that is a real pain. But an emergency they will call you right away and I appreciate the doctor for that. read more

I never understood why people hate going to the dentist. After visiting Dr. Zerounian, now I understand. She is, hands down, the worst dentist I have ever been to. I moved to the Pasadena area in 2014 and needed a dentist that accepted my DHMO insurance. I was hoping to find a dentist like my previous (out of state) dentist, who I actually looked forward to visiting. I made an appointment with Dr. Zerounian for Sept. 29, 2014. After waiting a while and then getting x-rays, Dr. Zerounian finally came to start the cleaning. And, let me tell you -- that was the WORST pain I have ever felt as a result of a dentist. And that includes having braces and headgear as a kid and having a filling done before the anesthetic had fully kicked in as an adult. I don't know exactly what tool she used (some sort of powered scaler), but I was nearly crying during the procedure from the pain. At one point she asked if I was ok, but at that point the cleaning was already 3/4 of the way done, so I just said it was fine and toughed it out. My gums hurt for DAYS afterwards. I have never had a cleaning where my gums hurt AT ALL afterwards. My gums hurt so much that it's only now, in 2017, that I've finally gotten around to making another dentist appointment (after having switched to a PPO dental plan that gives more choice in dentists). read more

If I could, I would give this dental office ZERO stars. First, I made an appointment for a cleaning. Hadn't been to the dentist in years. Selected this office as it accepts my insurance. I go in, receptionist is nice. I fill out paperwork and wait. I was seen about 30-45 minutes after my appointment time. I get X-Rays done and I wait again. The dentist finally comes in checks my teeth quickly and tells me that I need my fillings redone and that it's $175 per tooth. Wait, what? I have insurance right? So then she says she can't do the work that day and I need to come back. What about my cleaning? Yeah, I need to come back for that too. So of course I was pissed, I took off work to have nothing done. Smh. Fast forward to me making an appointment for my son. His tooth is bothering him and he's 4. My husband takes him and they are seen about 45-60 minutes past the appointment time. From what my husband says, they barely take a look at my sons tooth and say his tooth needs to be pulled. They can't do it though, he needs to see a specialist. Okay. We get the referral for the specialist. To make a super long story short, I went back and forth with not only this dental office, the specialist and my insurance because Dr. Lena's staff was not being cooperative & making calls and doing what they needed to do in order for my 4 year old son, that is in pain to be seen. The receptionist in this office was rude and appeared to care less about the fact that my son was in pain. I can't tell you the amount of frustration I experienced with this office. First off I want to say that I PAID IN ADVANCE for the service I am supposed to be getting. So they are ALREADY PAID. Then the sloppy unprofessionalism ensues. Read this true story!!! Supposedly this dentist office gets all its work "by word of mouth" as they said. I have a HUGE beef with this dental company. For one thing.. I have been waiting for a "pre-authorization" for dental work since THE BEGINNING OF december and its not come through yet.. it is now 1/30/08. Dr Lena assured me I would get my work done before the end of the month and that her staff would immediately call to get the pre-approval. What happened that they didnt tell me was that they'd be CLOSED for 3 weeks. They also didn't call to tell me that there was a problem with the pre-authorization or that they were going to close for the holidays! Later in December I called 3 times and was told by her they were closed but could only do emergencies! Meanwhile Im in pain. So I wait some more, I called just now after not hearing from them all month, and they say "we havent heard from the insurance yet". They switch me to accounting and I am told that she didnt hear from the insurance.. blah blah. I said "Why am I waiting so long?". She doesn't know other than to say they requested more info. I said "but this long!?". Then the woman says "Well we have a lot of patients NOT JUST YOU". NOT JUST YOU?!?!? Ive been MORE THAN FLEXIBLE AND PATIENT WAITING 2 F***ING MONTHS..and I am patronized and told "we have others not JUST you". I said "Ive been waiting 2 months". TWO MONTHS. Thats friggin RIDICULOUS. Obviously they are not on the ball!! I read someone else say the same thing in another review not on this site but about Dr. Lena.. but I had already joined and had other work before I saw that review. Needless to say Ive had headaches and pain in my head associated with the fact that I need the dental work I came in for. I am livid about this, and they don't do ANY FOLLOW UP.. and just WAIT for insurance companies to contact them. The customer service is atrocious with the comment I heard today "Not JUST you". She said she'd call me back as soon as she calls the insurance co. again... but she should have already done that way before the end of the month!!! I saw Dr. Lena today - my first dentist visit in a few years, so I wasn't expecting it to be a lot of fun. All I had was a cleaning and checkup so I can't comment on how this place is for advanced work. Dr. Lena seemed nice enough, once she finally got to me, although she didn't spend a lot of time with me. The first problem was that I waited a half hour after my appointment time. When I asked the receptionist if she knew how long the wait would be all she could say was "you're next". No one ever apologized for the wait. Once I finally got in Dr. Lena asked "what are you here for" - if they don't know what people are coming in for that might explain why they run so late. After I got X-rays I waited another half hour for anyone to come back and see me. During that wait the hygienists spent time looking at my X-rays and chatting about them in Spanish - pretty rude when I was in the chair next to them. The hygienist that gave me X-rays and eventually came to do the tooth polishing didn't even bother to introduce herself. Also, she didn't seem to know how to use the toothbrush and sprayed my face with toothpaste. In all I was there for over an hour and a half and I spent about 20 minutes with anyone. The weren't any major problems, but I'm pretty sure I'd pick a new dentist for my next visit. read more

Horrific. She did the procedure without anesthesia and kept yelling at me that it didn't hurt. I was in a agony and told her to stop, and she kept pressing on my mouth and yelling. I walked out mid procedure. read more

I recently moved from an existing dentist to Dr. Lena's, as I felt my previous dentist was ripping me off. Making up false issues, just to suck money out of my insurance company. From initial impressions, I like Dr. Lena. She is very professional, makes you feel at ease when you visit her (even when you have to have injections) and she is definately not out to rip you off. I also referred a co-worker to Dr. Lena and they returned saying they liked her and would be returning. So she's not that bad. The only downside I have to say is the receptionist. I find it very rude for her to be talking in Armenian to people, when there are people of different ethnicities in the office. They should be talking English all the time. Terrible! terrible! Terrible My second visit here: Dr. Lena came into the room, complaining that she had not been paid by my HMO and she was not going to continue working like this. Dr Lena then spoke to my plan from my cell phone, and complained to them. It was confusing and humiliating. I have never had this happen before in the many years with this dental plan. I usually just go in, receive treatment, pay, or not, depending on the procedure. -Never had a problem in the past. I left Dr. Lena's office without treatment. I called the claims office when I got home for an explanation and was told that I am fully covered, that perhaps the billing clerk at Dr Lena's office drops the ball in submitting claims on time, and that Dr Lena should take a look at her billing clerk. He said Dr. Lena was out of line and should not have discussed this with the patient. I will never go back!!' I'm now looking for another Dentist. What a shame!! read more

I've been going to Dr Lena for about 3.5 years now. I think she is a very nice personable dentist and I trust her. She always tries to get a good deal with the dental insurers so you get a good bang for your buck if you have to have expensive work done (which I have in the past.) I now taking my 2 year old daughter there, she is very good with children too. My only issue is that occasionally you can end up waiting while sometimes, which can be a bit irritating. I saw some people commenting about the receptionist speaking in Armenian, personally I don't have an issue with this, I don't need to be listening into others' conversations, and she speaks perfect English to me when I am speaking to her and she's dealing with my needs. She too is very helpful and professional. read more
