I've been having Lenox's barbecue for more than 20 years, even back when they had a full restaurant, before the Houston Metro light rail built the line on Harrisburg. I don't recall ever having a bad meal from there. The chopped beef sandwiches are great, as well as the pork ribs, sausage, and sliced brisket. Also, their sides are good. Coleslaw, potato salad, and sweet potatoes are my favorites. read more

They delivered the food in containers, hot and ready to serve with utensils, pickles, jalapeños, and unions!!! growing up in a small rural town BBQ is a big deal and the taste I got from Lenox hit it just right!!! I shopped around and decided on Lenox Barbaque to cater a funeral reception. When I called and inquired about the cost and options, the manager was so accomodating, professional and helpful with all of my questions. I was not disappointed. The food was hot, set up and arrived on time as promissed. Everythiing from the brisket to the sauce was scrumptious. The prices are so reasonable. All of the staff have excellent customer service skills. All of the guests wanted to know who we used and said the food was delicious. They definately made me a return customer. I do not understand the rave reviews for this establishment. This is by far the most driest, flavorless bbq I have ever had the displeasure of eating. Brisket was tender, but entirely dry and lacked any flavor. The sausage tasted store bought and the BBQ was bland. read more

This was a recommendation from a friend, who stated they smoke good meat. I had my in laws come in-a group of 20. All I expected was the meat to be smoked, and for the bbq to taste like smoke. As my in laws were coming in from far away, this was the expectation. Yes, did I expect to pay cheaper than I would at--Pappas? Sure. Would I have paid more for Pappas? Yes. We had over 30 lbs delivered to them. None tasted like smoke. I. Fact, some tasted boiled. I got a call at 9 am, the day after I had brought the meat to them---stating my meat was done. I had delivered it the prior day at 10 am. Def not smoked for 24 hrs. No smoke flavor. Really disappointed. Won't go back. I would even pay 4 times as much for a special event for better brisket. 10/25/13 11:55am - When you walk through the front door, you walk straight into the kitchen. The staff must be used to the startled look on peoples faces, as they smiled and told me its OK and pointed where to place my order. Lenox is a catering business that serves carry out lunches week days only. There is no dining area or even a picnic table outside. But that does not seem to deter the hungry customers. The parking lot was full of blue collar workers. Men in safety yellow vests lined up to the catering office to place their order. If take out is not an option, Lenox now caters and serves lunch a few blocks west at Medel's Ice House located at 3509 Harrisburg Blvd. I drove my lunch over there, and enjoyed the great weather seated at their outside picnic tables wishing I had a beer but was on the clock. I scored Lenox an 80 out of 100. Regional Texas BBQ with 65 years of history. Smoke: Oak. Three big ancient black Olyers occupy a smoke dungeon with 65 year old soot stained ceilings and walls. A very primal experience for this meathead. Brisket: Good (sigh). A respectable 1/4in pink smoke ring beneath a thin black bark. Slice tested tough of tender which hurts the score. Smoke was disappointingly mild. There was a rub that was long gone in flavor. Overall flavor was ok, use the sauce. Ribs: Very Good. The spare rib was very tender with soft bite and clean bone. I marked it down a little because it was just slightly overcooked but only a meathead could notice. The overall flavor was great. A slight sweetness from maybe the reduction of BBQ sauce slathered over it before it cooked. No sauce needed. Sausage: Good. Well the benefit of walking into the kitchen to place your order is there are no secrets. Lenox serves Eckrich sausage. HA! I prefer handmade sausage but I don't throw stones at "grocery store" sausage. I love to sample all different kinds. There is nothing wrong with Eckrich, I grew up eating the stuff. Lenox however slices it up before it smokes it. So there was good smoke flavor on this grocery store classic. Use the sauce. Sauce: Good. A thick thick mildly tangy sweet sauce with black pepper, molasses, butter and lemon flavors. It clings and coats every bite and added a good flavor boost. It does the job. History: Back in the day (1949 - 1967), one of the largest caterers in the state was Leonard O'Neill. He acquired Lenox Barbecue in payment for a gambling debt. O'Neill was a machinist by trade. When the orders surpassed the capacity of the brick smokers, O'Neill converted a Rainbow Bread rotisserie oven into a wood fired BBQ pit. In 1968 Hubert Olyer from Mesquite, Tx patented the same type oven (thief?) and revolutionized Texas BBQ forever. In 1980 J&R Manufacturing bought the patent rights and began manufacturing Olyers in Mesquite Texas. The Olyer Pit uses only wood as its heat source. Temperature is maintained by automatic dampeners and fans that circulate air. Levi Goode, Pappas and Rudy's owe their success either to Hubert Olyer's theft or O'Neill's innovation. read more

On a recent talk thread this place came up in the discussion and it was one of the few BBQ joints that is ITL that I had yet heard about let alone try. I was going to be in the area so I figured why not give it a go. Their operating hours are tiny, 11-2 pm weekdays. Since, my work schedule has changed, I am able to swing by for lunch. With all of the rail construction this area is much different, but lucky enough they have a lot out fron that is easy to get to. When I parked I looked for the entrance, I actually entered through the back on accident. Once inside, I realized that it wasn't really a restaurant but their whole processing area. It's where they take in their meat, season it and cook it. You're standing in their work area, reminds me of Pat Greer's Kitchen meets BBQ. They have a small ordering area/office, they had a few menus, I looked over and saw that the 5 meat plate was less than most other places 3 meat plates, so I was sold. For less than $10, I would be able to sample what these guys had to offer. Let's start off by describing everything as being dry. Not necessarily a bad thing, but that's the best way to summarize their Q. As far as the best, was the sausage. It was very flavorful. Next, for their plate you get 1 rib, it wasn't cooked to perfection, but the dry rub was quite good. The turkey and ham were both OK, did not blow me away, but I usually do not get these items, so I consider it a bonus on this meal. Finally, the brisket, what I come to BBQ places for: It was very lean, and dry. It lacked flavor, I like my brisket a bit on the fatty side. I was forced to dip it in their sauce to make it edible. Their sauce was hard to put my finger on it, it was not distinct in any special flavors. Not sweet nor tangy, just kind of there. BTW this place is carry out ONLY. No tables inside at all. The take out comes with bread and two sides. I had the baked beans, which I did not even finish, and the potato salad which was your basic run of the mill. I've used Lennox in the past to cater at one of our big customers place of business. Everything was great, food, service, except the awful sauce. The other reviews on yelp about the sauce are correct. No flavor, just there. When we went to try out the bbq, we were happy, except the sauce. The owner assured me that the sauce may not have been mixed so I agreed to continue with our catering. But that wasn't the problem, I ended up serving this awful sauce to 125 people. Which all unanimously agreed. Everyone said bbq great but sauce was weird. Fast forward 1 year. We are serving bbq again to our customer. Called Lennox and said, hey we loved everything last year except the sauce. Could you spice it up a bit or serve another sauce? Nope Lennox is too proud of their watery, no taste, just there sauce. Can't throw some spices in a pot of sauce to keep my business. So this year, we are going with another bbq caterer. read more

These guys have been around for a longggg time and that's because they know what their doing . Their food has been an east end staple and has survived the test of time . First off they don't cook electric , they smoke with pecan and oak for hours like it's supposed to be . Brisket is the best and always fresh , better than Pappas and Goode co. Chicken is seasoned well with no sauce leaving that option up to you . Sausage is great as well as the ribs always served with pickles and onions with sauce on the side . No dining area thanks to metro taking the front half of the property but they make it work. Definitely suggest you call in your lunch order as they can get busy . I bet this place hasn't changed a single thing since it opened in the mid-1940's, which is definitely part of its charm. BBQ joints should be just that, joints. Glitzy glamorous BBQ places invariably have food that tastes like crap, IF it tastes of anything at all. Lenox on the other hand is really good BBQ. But is it great? Sigh, no. It smells fantastic, but ends up tasting just "good". It's a great, old-timey BBQ place the way they always were when I was a kid! If you could bottle the smell in this place, you'd be an overnight billionaire!! It just reeks of "fantastic BBQ!!". But again, the BBQ is just "good". After the devastatingly luscious smell of the place, I was all set to have the BBQ knock me on my ass, but it honestly didn't. Don't get me wrong, it's good without doubt and I have not a single complaint, well...other than it's just not incredible. The sides are all good (particularly the potato salad) and I'm a big fan of the "old BBQ joint" decor, especially since this place really is. All the trappings of a world class experience are here: smell, decor, age, good prices, and serving sizes, but somehow, I left just a tiny bit underwhelmed. Definitely go to Lenox. Great friends to the East End community putting out copious amounts of tasty BBQ. Since the Metro Light Rail hasn't really done any recent favors to the East End community, Lenox Barbecue has gone from a bustling lunchroom place to primarily takeout and catering. I've only been in a handful of times, but I've enjoyed their catering for years. Lenox does a solid product. Their brisket is usually quite lean so I wouldn't describe it as juicy and dripping, but I love asking for the barky ends when I'm walking through the catering line. Chicken is delicious, with a good smoky flavor and just as tasty as a leftover the next day (yes, I always grab a little extra). And the sausage link is winner, split on a piece of bread with some sliced onions. I'm not a huge BBQ sauce fan, so I'd describe Lenox's as average vinegary style. But, I always have some on the side to kick up the flavor when I need it. Potato salad, coleslaw, beans, and dessert are your usual standard sides. Lenox's catering staff are always prompt and friendly. They've been proud supporters of Channel 8 and Houston Public Media, bringing delicious barbeque to the volunteers and staff for many years. There are certainly better BBQ joints in town, but for consistently good, well priced food without the long lines, you should try Lenox. read more

Ok. I wanted to love the food. I really did. Everything I ordered was reheated leftovers. The bbq sauce tasted like pinto bean juice with maybe a dash of mustard? The ribs were almost to the point of being jerky. They were so dried out. If I had to choose, I would say the chop beef was the most edible. Sausage was ok but I guess you can't really go wrong with store bought sausage. I will say the baked potato was huge and fresh. So I'll give credit to the bake potato. All of the sides were definitely canned. Potato salad tasted like a metal spoon had been sitting in it. Maybe if you use them for catering they will make your food fresh but for a lunch daytime meal it was the biggest let down. read more

I talked a little bit to the person running the place and she said that before the rail came in they had a store front and dinning area but had to be tore down to make room for the rail she said it still dont stop them for making the best BBQ they can. and for being in Houston for over 65 years its no wonder the place is a staple to Houston itself.. When people ask me what makes good BBQ to me this is the kind of place that defines that statement not them BBQ joints that are just opening up with high prices and fancy gimmicks to get you in.. One thing that also defines BBQ is the price and looking at the menu prices are very reasonable with Brisket going for $14.95 LB compared to $20+ in other places Ribs or Smoked Turkey $12.95 Lb Links and Pulled pork $11.95 and whole Chicken $9.95 I went for the 3 meat combo because it allows me to try the meats the place smokes and also came with 2 sides the meats i chose were Brisket, Ribs, and pulled pork with Charro beans and potato salad being my sides.. Up first for me was the Brisket and i must say i was impressed with the favor the oak gave a great taste to the meat and the bark was right where Texas brisket needed to be that fat was also rendered well and made for a great tasting cut of meat, next i had the pulled pork and man this was some of the best I've tasted in Houston the favor on it was just where pork needed to be and the sauce that was given to me gave the meat the flavor it needed... last was the Ribs and well i can say to me the rib lacked favor but thats because i like mine sweet and with some heat but the bite was great and it was fall off the bone material all for a great price of $11.95 you really cant beat that when at some places like in the Heights you pay $22lb for brisket alone... My overall review of the place was great if you looking to come to a fancy place to dine this place is not for you its pick up only but for the price its really worth it in my book.. My opinion might be biased considering I worked there for 6 years but then again it might just make for a better review. Food is awesome. Stuffed potato to die for. The restaurant is closed but you can get To-go go for lunch and Catering. I haven't worked there in a couple of years but i miss those ribs. I miss the brisket. Shoot I miss it all. This was my Grandfather's favorite place on Sunday's to get lunch at. I had all but forgot about this place, until my wife and I went on a drive thru my old neighborhood. We stopped by for lunch.
